Let it Snow, Make It Go - A Teen Snow Shoveling Program

This past winter, a pilot snow shoveling referral program was developed and then we had no snow! This year, there simply has to be more snow than last year and so we’re ready to get shoveling.

Here’s how the program will operate: Upon request, the Arlington Heights Senior Center will provide a list of teenagers who have signed up to shovel snow for Arlington Heights residents, age 60 and over or Arlington Heights residents who have a disability. The resident will then contact the teen and make all arrangements with the teen to have their snow shoveled. The teen snow shoveler and the resident will work out all details as to: areas to be shoveled; time to be shoveled; cost of job and payment arrangements. The Village does not do background checks on any of the participants, teens or seniors citizens or persons with disabilities. Both parties should do their own interview and/or reference check, if desired, before signing on with a particular client or teen.

Please be aware that this is a start-up program. Initially, we might not have enough teens to refer to our residents or enough residents needing the shoveling. It’s not intended to be the resident’s only option for snow shoveling. It is a fee-based program, and that fee is up to the resident and the teen. The suggested range is $10.00 to $15.00 per hour. Please contact the Senior Center for an application to shovel or have your home shoveled at 847.253.5532.

This program was initiated by the Arlington Heights Youth Commission, endorsed by the Arlington Heights Senior Citizens Commission and the Arlington Heights Commission for Citizens with Disabilities.

An OYO Opportunity*

An OYO (pronounced O-YO) is as engaging and helpful activity that you can do On Your Own...an activity that supports an environmental, cultural or scientific project. Might be just the thing to do on a cold winter’s day, at home or in our Senior Center computer room.

Volunteer for Chicago Wildlife Watch. It's a special citizen science project that collects and analyzes photos of wildlife in the Chicago area. You would identify animals found in camera trap photos from around the Chicago area. Your help allows scientists to continue the research into urban biodiversity, making our area a better home for both humans and animals. All you need is a computer with internet access and a desire to make a contribution.

Interested or just curious? Simply Google Chicago Wildlife Watch or go to www.chicagowildlifewatch.org.

You may be On-Your-Own; but you'll be helping scientists with their enormous backlog of pictures.

Members of the Barbershop Singers will learn singing funda-mentals, rehearse songs in harmony, and perform in a final Showcase on the stage of Metropolis Performing Arts Centre. The Showcase will feature the Barbershop Singers along with additional guest Barbershop quartets and choruses.

No singing experience necessary! Both men and women welcomed! Whether you’re a trained musician or a shower-singer, join us as we sing old favorites and new hits in that classic Barbershop Style!

Frank Lloyd Wright: Greatest Architect of the 20th Century?

Tuesday, May 8, 1:00p-2:30p Fee: $19 Instructor: Ralph Burin

You will examine the life and career of the man that many believe was the greatest American architect of the 20th century. His highly original aesthetic and singular philosophy placed Wright in the forefront of 20th century architecture. Wright studied under Louis Sullivan, one of the first builders of skyscrapers. The young Wright’s first independent constructions were his so-called “Prairie Houses,” built in and around Chicago. Despite personal tragedies and changing tastes in 20th century architecture, Wright continued to receive important commissions throughout his long career.

The Blue Zone

Monday, January 29, 10:00a-12:00p Fee: $19 Instructor: Joan Davis

The National Geographic article on Blue Zones was one of the most popular ever published. Author Dan Buettner went on to write four best sellers on Blue Zones, the areas where folks not only live extraordinarily long lives, but do so with abundant energy. You will go on a virtual “hunt” to track down recognized “pockets of longevity” around the world, including one found in the USA.

Discover the secrets those living in the Blue Zones have to teach us, and focus on how they can enter their own personal “Blue Zone” of health and longevity.

The Adventure of Bertha Benz & History of the German Auto

March 22, 1:00p-3:00p Fee: $25 Instructor: Anette Isaacs

The superb reputation of German cars is legendary. They are synonymous with the quality and success of German engineering. But hardly anyone knows that the history of the automobile’s origin is, to a great extent, due to Berth Benz, who 130 years ago - in a secret attempt to visit her mother - became the first human being ever to drive an automobile over a long distance. Join German Historian, Anette Isaacs, as she introduces you to Berta and her history-making adventure of 1888!

Help Seniors Get to their Doctors’ Visits Join the ETS/NW family as a volunteer driver taking seniors to their doctors’ appointments. The average age of our passengers is 85, so they really need our assistance getting to their important medical appointments. The demand for our service is greatly increasing, with requests for applications up 111%. To be able to serve those needing rides, we need more volunteers!

Our volunteer drivers pick up our passengers, take them to their appointments, stay with them, and bring them back home. Our online scheduling software makes it easy to select rides that fit your schedule. We do not require a weekly commitment. Simply logon to our scheduling software and see what rides might work for you.

Our volunteer drivers have been with us an average of six years, so they’re clearly enjoying their volunteer time with ETS/NW. Stop by our office in the Senior Center, give us a call at 847-222-9227 or visit our website (www.etsnw.org) to learn more about what we do. We can’t wait to welcome you into the ETS/NW volunteer family!

Need a Ride to the Doctor?

If you’re at least 60 years old, live within our territory and need a ride to the doctor or dentist, stop by our office to pick up an application. For each round trip ride, we ask for a $12 donation.

11 Years of Service

In 11 years, we have provided more than 27,300 rides to seniors in the Northwest suburbs. Quite an accomplishment for our organization! We appreciate the tremendous support we receive from our local communities and our outstanding volunteers. None of our success would be possible without all of them working together.

Suggestion Box Articles

Q) Need more handicapped parking spaces. A) Parking issues always grab the center stage here. Please recognize that we more than exceed the number of handicapped spaces we are required to have. Know also that only a handful of our patrons need a true (double wide) handicapped space. Most of our patrons with mobility challenges need proximity to the entrance. If we were to put in four more handicapped spaces, it would take eight spaces and we’d be giving up an additional four spaces. There are already several times each week when we max out the parking and we simply can’t manage to give up another four spaces. There are certain times of the day when the lot is less full and there are at least three handicapped spaces available. If you’re not coming in for a program that takes place in the morning or early afternoon, try varying your hours and visiting us in the mid-late afternoons. Q) Suggest a class on ukulele for beginners. A) Thanks for your great suggestion. We have offered ukulele classes in the past. It ran for a session or two and then there was no further interest. We will try to offer it again in the future. Q) Let’s have some fun. Let’s get a yodeling class started. A) Thanks for the energy and suggestion. We’ve looked into it a little bit, but we need some more people to be interested. If you help us identify who these interested parties might be…“Yodel Lady Who? “ Q) I am interested in finding out about the plants in front of the Senior Center. They are withered, but I recognize them as a plant from my childhood, balsams? A) Not balsams…There are some round boxwoods in square planters. Then the long planters have sweet potato vines, caladiums and some impatiens. Next time you’re in the Senior Center, perhaps you could stop by the front desk and one of us can step out and see which one you need help identifying. We promise to do a better job with watering. Q) I have suggested several times that the Walkers Club book add a top sheet to continue the number after 450. I put my request in the clear box on the table by the Walkers notebook. Thank you.

A) Don’t know what happened to your original request(s), but I’m forwarding it directly to the staff that operates the Walkers’ Club to be addressed.

NOTE: SUGGESTIONS ARE REVIEWED AND RESPONDED TO BY SENIOR CENTER MANAGER AND ADVISORY COUNCIL PRESIDENT
