The COMPLETE 1912 Sovereign Trio!

A wonderful opportunity to travel back in time to pre-WWI Australia, an exhaustive search of the worldwide market enables us to offer the Complete George V 1912 Sovereign Trio. Struck a century ago at Australia’s three Mints,

and presented in gVF-gEF, what better way to ring in the New Year than with hundred-year-old gold?

Physical evidence of our Gold Rush heritage, George V sovereigns are

generally scarce in decent grade – especially pre-WWI issues. Before the global economic collapse triggered by WWI, sovereigns were genuine circulation coins, meaning that a greater percentage of

the low-mintage pre-war issues

are well worn

from day-to-day use. Fascinatingly, the 1912 Sovereigns are specifically scarce because of the date of issue. Just as the 1915 Sovereigns are hotly pursued in Australia due to the link with Gallipoli, 1912 Sovereigns are the subject of unusually strong demand due to the connection with the Titanic, which sank in April of that year.

In spite of the difficulty in amassing the sovereigns of 1912 in good grade, we have been able to compile FIFTEEN comprehensive George V 1912 sets! A prestigious acquisition for any collector, each

of those sets comprises a 1912 sovereign from each of the Melbourne, Sydney and Perth Mints – with each coin in lustrous good Very Fine to good Extremely Fine condition.

Providing a fitting environment for coins of this quality and importance, each 22-carat gold trio is set in an impressive timber case with a Certificate of Authenticity.

New St George types!

Created for the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II by British sculptor Paul Day, the new St George reverse is a fitting successor to Pistrucci’s timeless design. Striking to the eye, the demand inspired by the aesthetic appeal of the 2012 Sovereign, Half Sovereign and Quarter Sovereign will be intensified by the one-year-only status of the design. Indeed, with virtually every 2012 Sovereign Proof

issue already sold out at the Mint, these dramatic 22-carat gold coins will be hotly pursued worldwide.

For only the second time since 1817, the world’s most famous gold coin features a new interpretation of the St George & the Dragon design!

An imaginative addition to a presentation defined by great originality and outstanding value, each set features an insert comprising genuine grains of Aussie wheat!

Indicative of the importance of the wheat industry to Australia’s development, the last threepence (3d) type was redesigned in 1938, with the

reverse dominated by wheat stalks.

Headlined by genuine Aussie wheat, united with three Australian currency issues, this inspired collector presentation forms the most fitting possible tribute to the vital contribution of the Wheat Industry to the economic success of the Australian nation.

Australia’s ‘golden grain’…Although the 1788 First Fleet was stocked with seeds for crops to be grown in Britain’s new southern possession, many

decades

passed before the colonists adapted to Australian conditions. Following mid 19th century advances in technology and farming techniques, however, the industry boomed, and by 1870 Australia was considered a major wheat exporter. After further key steps forward in research and development – such as William Farrer’s creation of the Federation wheat variety – Australia’s ‘golden grain’ was destined to play a major part in the economic prosperity of the nation throughout the 20th century and beyond.

Enshrined in legal tender…To be enshrined in legal tender is to receive the ultimate recognition, and, the importance of the wheat industry to Australia’s economic growth can be seen in the regular

appearance of the grain on circulating

currency. Even as the industry was still developing, in the mid-19th century, wheat was an Australian icon, appearing on privately produced Traders Tokens issued to overcome a shortage of small change.

Further illustrating the high regard in which the industry is held, Australia’s last predecimal threepence type – issued from 1938 to 1964 during the reigns of George VI and Elizabeth II – also featured wheat upon the reverse. Two years after the last silver 3d was struck, Australia’s first $2 note was unveiled at decimalisation, featuring a portrait of aforementioned wheat pioneer William Farrer and stalks of wheat.

Australia’s Fields of Gold…

Issued from 1966 to 1988, when supplanted by the $2 coin, Australia’s $2 note bears the portrait of William James Farrer – the key player in developing wheat strains for Australian conditions

– united with a depiction of wheat.

A recreation of the Wheat Traders

Token struck by Thomas Stokes of

Melbourne – one of a series of privately produced unofficial

‘coins’ issued by businesses in the

19th century to overcome a shortage

of official currency.

The perfect complement to either of the products on these pages, the 2012 2-Coin BU and Proof Sets from the Royal Australian Mint form a unique, exclusive tribute to the key role of the Wheat Industry in the economic prosperity of the Australian nation.

Whilst an apt way to honour the contribution

of the Wheat Industry to Australia’s progress

from a disparate group of colonies to a united nation, the 2012 2-Coin BU and Proof Sets are also a must-have for serious collectors. With the 20c and $1 Wheat coins not issued for circulation and not found in the 2012 Proof & Mint Sets, these sets are vital to those keen to preserve a complete collection. Exclusive, with 40,000 BU and 25,000 Proof sets issued, each Australian legal tender set is housed in a RAM pack.

Shock Year of the Dragon release!

With the Royal Australian Mint acknowledged as one of the world’s finest issuing authorities, it’s no surprise that it receives many requests to strike coins specifically for release on the international market – such as this stunning 2012 Year of the Dragon Silver & Gold Series! An official Australian legal tender program, this shock Lunar release comprises four individually brilliant precious metal coins – each bearing an inspiring design highly reminiscent of China’s ever-popular Dragon Dollars. The key to the series will undoubtedly be the 2012 $100 Dragon 1oz Gold Prooflike. With demand for all gold coinage rocketing to unprecedented levels, and the Australian allocation tightly restricted, this is likely to be your only chance to guarantee supply of this magnificent .9999 fine Gold Prooflike. Even if you disregard the appeal of the extremely popular Lunar theme, the 100mm 2012 $30 Dragon Kilo Silver Prooflike is sure to spark overwhelming demand. A vital release for collectors, this is only the second Kilo Silver type ever struck by the RAM – and the first in six years! One of few RAM coins issued in this format in recent years, the 40mm Dragon 1oz Silver Prooflike will also be hotly pursued –

especially given that the Perth Mint’s 1oz Silver Proof Dragon sold out in a week!

Struck from pure .999 silver, like the Kilo and 1oz, the expansive 65mm 2012 $10 Dragon 5oz Prooflike is only the RAM’s second 5oz! With the 2011 President’s Cup 5oz wiped out at super speed, demand for this unusual RAM type is sure to be huge. Indeed, given the ridiculously small Australian allocations, all four coins in this official Australian legal tender series are destined to be available for a very short time. Struck in response to an overseas order, the greater part of the mintage of each coin is destined for the international market. Thus, the Gold 1oz has an Australian allocation of just FIFTY coins, with a mere FIFTY Kilo, SEVENTY-FIVE 5oz and FIVE HUNDRED 1oz Silvers remaining in Australia! With Downies granted only a small percentage of the Australian allocations, a sell-out is inevitable.

■ Comprises the .9999 gold 1oz and .999 silver Kilo, 5oz and 1oz coins

■ Official Australian legal tender issues – struck to RAM Prooflike quality

■ Tiny Australian allocations! 1oz Gold – 50; Kilo – 50; 5oz – 75; 1oz – 500

An outstanding opportunity for Downies clients to

commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of

Queen Elizabeth II in the world’s favourite precious metal, the Perth Mint has just launched this exquisitely struck .9999 fine 1/4oz Gold Proof!

An official Australian legal tender issue, the 2012 $25 Diamond Jubilee 1/4oz Gold Proof features a flawless depiction of the original uncrowned portrait of Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick, united with the current portrait of Her

1963 & 1966 – the Last & the First! The most dramatic change in the nation’s currency history, Australia converted to the decimal system in February of 1966.

Three years before, as the curtain began to fall on the predecimal era, the Melbourne Mint unveiled its last issue of the 1955-63 Collector Proof Series – the 1963 Silver Proof Set. A grand finale

to Australia’s predecimal system, this exclusive issue stands as one of the final signposts on the road to decimalisation, and is highly sought after.

Representing the dawn of a new era, the 1966 Proof Set was struck by the Royal Australian Mint – launched in 1965 specifically to produce Australia’s first decimal coinage. Headlined by

the unique Silver Round 50c, this set is among the most desirable, most exclusive issues in the Mint’s 1966-2012 Proof Set Series.

The perfect way to record this major monetary milestone, we have both of these key Australian legal tender sets in stock – plus the last predecimal Proofs from Perth!

Mintage just 5,042! The dawn of a new era

Last predecimal Proofs from Perth!

Indicative of the embryonic state of the Australian collector market in the 1960s, the Melbourne Mint’s final contribution to the 1955-63 Collector Proof Series had an unbelievably small mintage of just 5,042 sets!

A wonderful opportunity to enjoy the sheer quality of Australia’s most prestigious collector program, the 1963 Silver Proof Set comprises the Florin, Shilling, Sixpence and Threepence, with each coin defined by razor-sharp designs and the smoothest of background

The foundation stone of any Australian collection, comprising the first Proof examples of the much-loved coins designed by Stuart Devlin, the 1966 Proof Set is the most desirable issue of the Royal Australian Mint’s 1966-2012 Proof Set series.

Signifying a key moment in the nation’s currency history, the first Australian decimal

fields. Considering the historic nature of this crucial collection, the quality of the coins and the tiny mintage, the 1963 Proof Set is still remarkably affordable.

Rising in catalogue value to A$1,115, the chance to own this important piece of Australian currency history at just A$925 must not be missed!

Proof Set is headlined by the unique, controversial Silver Round 50c – set in the original case of issue with Australia’s first 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c and 20c dates. One of the most exclusive issues of the series, with the Mint releasing just 18,110 sets, this highly sought after 6-coin collection is genuinely scarce.

With some of the coins in slightly imperfect condition, we can give you the chance to secure the 1966 Proof Set at A$130 off the current catalogue value!

To gain a complete picture of this pivotal moment in Australian currency history, the rare, prestigious 1963 Proof Pair from the Perth Mint is a must-have.

As was traditional, the Perth Mint only struck Proof examples of the denominations

it produced for circulation –

in 1963, the penny and halfpenny. Underpinned by blazing orange hues and sharply detailed designs, these awe-inspiring Proofs are rare in premium condition. Just 1,100 pairs were struck, but with the number of pristine examples undermined by the passage of time and poor storage, only a tiny percentage of the original mintage remains

in the immaculate quality seen here.

The most sought after Proof issue of the 1960s, rarely seen on the market, we have just five 1963 Perth Mint Proof Pairs available.

1930 Penny Hoard!

An amazing FIVE coins in stock!Australia’s highest profile rarity, the 1930 Penny is undoubtedly the nation’s ‘King of Coins’. Undeniably rare, with only 1,500 thought to exist, we have FIVE examples of this iconic Australian coin in stock – all from the estate of a long-term Downies client.

The creation of a legend…In the darkest days of the Great Depression, the Melbourne Mint lay idle for long periods, with no need for more currency in the deflationary Australian economy. Indeed, no 3d or 6d coins were issued from 1929 to 1933, with no 1/- or 2/- coins struck in 1929 or 1930. It was thought that no pennies were struck in 1930 either, but it is now believed that a small number were struck during die-testing, and that these coins were released into circulation with the 1931 penny issue.

Rarity on the rise…It was only in the 1960s, as people from all walks of life tried to assemble complete predecimal sets before decimalisation, that the true rarity of the 1930 1d was appreciated. Becoming Australia’s ‘ultimate collector acquisition’, the extreme rarity of the 1930 1d also quickly captured the attention of investors.

The laws of supply and demand dictate that increased competition for a small pool of examples can only result in a rising value, and the 1930 1d is a powerful case-in-point. Testimony to the fact that rarity – not quality – is the driving force behind long-term price growth, a 1930 Penny in Fine has soared from A$8,750 to A$28,000 since 1997!

A major holding...A man with a passion for predecimal coins AND an eye for the future, we assisted a collector in the accumulation of several 1930 pennies over the years – an incredible five coins in all! With our client’s passing, his estate has entrusted Downies with the responsibility of dispersing this major holding. As is standard for the 1930 1d, which, having been issued for circulation in 1931 is generally found in well used condition, all five examples are graded Fine with minor faults.

Setting the price below the current market value for the grade as a result, you must not miss this mouth-watering opportunity to become one of the privileged few to own Australia’s most famous, most sought after coin.

THE PRINCE OF POTENTIAL!

Despite our client having somewhat of

an obsession with the 1930 Penny, he did not

ignore other key Australian numismatic rarities. Uniting

the King of Coins with the Prince of Potential, his extensive collection also included several 1923 Halfpennies!

A great Australian rarity, and yet still available at

a reasonable price, the 1923 Halfpenny is the

key to the 1911-64 Halfpenny

Series.

Very rare, with an estimated mintage of just 15,000, this celebrated copper rarity is rightly seen as one of the most important acquisitions the serious predecimal collector can make.

Moreover, as the 1923 Halfpenny satisfies all the criteria of a sound rare coin investment – tangible, highly liquid, offering flexibility and steady growth – this iconic copper coin has also caught the eye

of those seeking to diversify their portfolios. A tremendous opportunity, we have one 1923 1/2d available in good Fine, with two further examples available on the Order Form.

Here’s your best chance to buy a 1930 Penny at thousands below our normal price!

Rome – from chaos to consolidation…

Although he ruled for only two years, and spent much of his reign dealing with external military threats, Claudius II Gothicus played an important role in continuing process

15 years. As proclaimed by one of the three different Aurelian antoninianii presented here, this great Roman general could justifiably lay claim to the title ‘Restitutor Orbis’ – Restorer of the World.

Constantine & Licinius – an alliance of enemies

Claudius II – conqueror of the Goths

Aurelian – ‘Restorer of the World’

Constantine the Great and Licinius reigned as joint-Emperors from 308 to 324AD, with the former ruling the west, and the latter controlling the east. With Constantine determined to be the undisputed master of the Roman world,

however, the ‘alliance’ was a fragile one, and war between the two always loomed large.

The first breach occurred in 316, after Constantine invaded the east following Licinius’ refusal to accede to the western emperor’s demands. The conflict

ended in stalemate, but the feud between the Christian Constantine and the Pagan Licinius continued, until Constantine inflicted decisive defeats upon Licinius in 324AD. Licinius surrendered on the basis that his life

would be spared, but was executed within a matter of months.

Genuine relics of this fascinating Roman power struggle, we have a Licinius bronze Follis and two different Constantine bronze types available – at prices sure to shock!

Australia’s first two polymer $10 types!

STRAIGHT FROM ORIGINAL RBA BUNDLES!Crucial, historic and yet astoundingly affordable in pristine Uncirculated condition, we are delighted to give our clients the chance to obtain Australia’s first two polymer $10 types – taken directly from original Reserve Bank of Australia bundles!

A ‘world first’ for Australia! The world’s first polymer banknote – and Australia’s first commemorative note – the 1988 Johnston/Fraser $10 opened the eyes of the world to the benefits of polymer banknote technology. Issued to mark the bicentenary of European Settlement, this controversial release was, like all commemorative issues,

naturally hoarded out of circulation at speed. Very, very rarely found in circulation, regardless of the grade, this is your big chance to secure this distinctive, one-year type in guaranteed Uncirculated quality!

The revolution rolls onDespite some early difficulties with the production process, the overwhelming benefits of polymer banknotes – more

durable, more cost-effective, virtually impossible to counterfeit – saw Australia wholeheartedly embrace the polymer revolution. The first standard circulating polymer type, the $5, was released in 1992, with the first polymer $10 issued a year later, during the Fraser/Evans signature combination. Australia’s first standard $10 polymer type, the 1993 Fraser/Evans $10 will still be found occasionally

in change today, but in the immaculate Uncirculated quality presented here? Never.

Polymer priced to please! Our acquisition of original bundles of the 1988 $10 Johnston/Fraser and the 1993 $10 Fraser/Evans enables us to offer strictly Uncirculated examples of these historic, important Australian legal tender notes individually, as a pair AND as a Consecutive Pair of pairs. Better yet, we can do so at way below the current catalogue value! With the combined catalogue price of the two notes amounting to A$115 in Uncirculated quality, the opportunity to secure both key types at a mere A$80 simply must not be missed.

The Last and

the First!

A crucial juncture in the course of

Australian currency history, 1988 not only saw the issue of our first polymer and first commemorative banknote – it also witnessed the issue of Australia’s LAST $2 note and FIRST $2 coin!

A permanent memento of this major milestone, both the 1985-88 Johnston/Fraser $2 and the 1988 Indigenous Elder Al-Br $2 coin are found in this affordable presentation – with both presented in strictly Uncirculated quality!

Fantastic value-for-money at just A$34.95, both ‘last & first’ legal tender issues are beautifully presented within an attractive, informative full-colour pack.

One-year-only 1902 Double Sovereign!

Australia’s first coins!

A rare, important, one-year-only issue, the 1902 Double Sovereign is highly sought after by gold collectors across the globe. Struck in tiny numbers, and seldom offered in Australia, we have two examples of this prestigious British gold coin in stock!

The equivalent of two sovereigns, with each coin comprising 15.9671g 22-carat gold, the 1902 Double Sovereign was struck to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII. A mere 46,000 coins were issued for circulation, and with such a low mintage – and many of these weighty gold coins melted for the intrinsic value over the 110 years since issue –

it’s no surprise that this historic coin is rarely seen on the market.

A fantastic opportunity to enjoy the artistry of Pistrucci’s exquisite St George reverse design, with the flan measuring an expansive 28mm in diameter, the two 1902 Double Sovereigns we have in stock are conservatively graded at good Very Fine.

History in your hands…A genuine relic of the Federation era, the Australian Half Sovereigns of King Edward VII are sought after for both their immense beauty and great scarcity.

Bearing Pistrucci’s stunning St George & the Dragon design, Edward VII Half Sovereigns were struck

in very low numbers from 1902 to 1910 – the final year of the King’s brief reign. Indeed, the average annual half sovereign mintage from 1902 to 1910 was little more than 270,000! The tiny mintages, combined with higher circulation rates as a lower denomination, means that few half sovereigns

from the short-lived 1902-10 Edward VII series exist in decent grade.

An affordable opportunity to hold Australia’s golden heritage in your hands, we have a few Edward VII Half Sovereigns in Very Fine quality. Date and Mint of our choice.

Struck nearly a decade after unity was achieved at Federation in 1901, the first Australian coinage issue forms a powerful symbol of Australian independence – and represents the

shortest-lived type set in the nation’s numismatic history. Edward VII ruled for less than ten years, the last of which coincided with the issue of Australia’s first coins. The King was dead before most of the coins struck in his name arrived in Australia from the Royal Mint in London, ensuring that our first national coin series

would be a one-year-only issue. The foundation stone of every Australian predecimal collection, and genuinely scarce today, each set comprises average circulated examples of the 1910 sterling silver florin, shilling, sixpence and threepence – housed in an informative pack.
