Celebration of Arts

Whats New in KG-Grade 2

GWAs littlest artists have had an exciting and busy first term of Vis-ual arts. They are learning about the elements of art, principles ofdesign and using many new materials along the way. Inspired by art-

ists such as Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Hundertwasser and Klee, studentshave created many amazing pieces of art.

Our art program combines the strands ofcreating art, respond-ing to art and learning essential knowledge and skills. I encour-age parents to provide time to appreciate art with your childrenand also spend time practicing skills such as observational drawing

with them at home (see the last page of this newsletter for details).

This week students in KG2 through

Grade 2 show cased their talents and

hard work with a beautiful morning of

music and art. I am so proud of the stu-

dents! After just one quarter of visual

arts, our littlest artists filled the lobby

with colour and energy! Each students

art work was on display: paintings, sculp-

ture drawings, and puppets. in addition to

a collaborative art work for each grade

level. We hope you had an opportunity

to view the Art show. The following pag-

es highlight the achievements of each

grade level.

KG2

VKG2, Vincents Flowers, Mixed Media

Van Goghs Sunfowers inspired this overowing vase. KG2 arsts tore paper intocurly spirals and arranged beans for a bumpy textured center. Each KG2 student

made a ower for the vase. They think Vincent would be very proud!

Grade 1

Grade 1, Dream Houses, Collage

Inspired by Hundertwassers architecture and his painngs of nature friendlyhomes, Grade ones set out to design their own dream homes. They used vividly

coloured oil pastels to draw and painted with water colours. From ying turtles to

race car houses, youll nd just about everything in this Grade 1 village!

Grade 2

Grade 2, Create, Tempra on cotton

Grade Twos Circle Painng was made for their Tell Me A Picture Art

gallery. Students learned what collaboraon means and discovered

that it feels really good to work together. Students were impressed

by how the nal product was more beauful than each persons

contribuon.

Kg2-Grade 2

Students learn to use shapesto help them draw pictures.Looking for geometricshapes helps little artistsdraw animals and figures

more accurately.

Students are introduced tocontour drawing. They aregiven objects to touch - tofeel the lines and shapesbefore and during drawing.

Sometimes we air-draw be-fore drawing on paper. Theyare also encouraged to look:REALLY look at the sub-

ject! Students identify a vari-ety of lines, curves, angles,dots and circles. As theirpencils move slowly alongthe paper, their eyes moveover the subject at the same

time

Drawing is an essential skill in art and we regularlyspend time in visual art class practicing. Just like MathReading and playing an instrument, students need topractice to become better. Some art lessons encouragedrawing from memory and drawing imaginary things(such as Grade One dream houses). We also learn ob-servational drawing. Sometimes we complete a warm upactivity before a lesson and other times drawing is in-

corporated into a project.

Students are encouraged to draw regularly at homePerhaps once a week, encourage your child to put downtechnology and pick up a pencil. Draw anything that

they are interested in. I like to choose things form na-ture for younger students as they tend to feel moreconfident. Always comment on what they are noticingbumpy lines, circles, the veins of a leaf... sometimes, en-couraging them to look at little closer at a specific part

of their subject.

Grade 3-Grade 5

Students learn to use shapes thelp them draw. Lightly pencilinin geometric shapes can helstart a drawing. Students thedefine their figure with mordetailed organic lines an

shapes.
