TRANSIT RELIABILITY ACROSS CANADA Jason White Shopify
ABOUT MY PROJECT • Begun for Reliability class @ uOttawa
• Apples-to-Apples walkability comparison • Every major transit authority reports on this metric • Every major transit authority measures it differently
• No web interface, no UI
• Just a report
DATA & TOOLS • Used open data, freely available software • Microsoft stack: Windows, SQL Server, C#.NET, SQL Report Viewer • Census data from Statistics Canada • National Road Network from GeoBase • GTFS feeds from 10 transit authorities
• Custom walking distance algorithm
WHAT IS THE METRIC? • % of population residing or working within: • 400m of a transit stop; or • 800m of a transit station
• Transit Supportive Areas only • >= 7.5 households per hectare; or • >= 10 jobs per hectare*
• Ottawa claims 98.5% coverage • That seems high… • Other cities also claim very high coverage
* Not considered in this analysis
WHY SO HIGH? • Using aerial distance, not
walking distance
• Metric based on area (km2)
• Using only selected neighbourhoods
