Wednesday, Nov. 6 8 a.m. to noon KU Edwards Campus Increasingly, researchers are building “full-spectrum” (T1-T4) research teams and embracing collaborative or community involvement in their work. This increased effort and focus on engaging patients and other stakeholders in the research process may be new to some.

This event will feature regional research teams involving community, clinical, and basic science

research components. Lunch provided.

Frontiers: The Heartland Institute for Clinical and Translational Science is pleased to announce the launch of the Pioneers Recruitment Registry. This medical registry is designed for members of the community to volunteer to participate in clinical research studies. Created by leading medical institutions in our region, including the University of Kansas Medical Center, the Pioneers registry connects volunteers with active studies. Interested people will fill out a medical history form and then are contacted for studies for which they qualify. Researchers who wish to list their study must have their research study approved by an institutional review board and a Pioneers registry oversight committee. When approved, the researcher will receive only the name and contact information of people who meet their study criteria. To sign up to be a Pioneer or to view current studies, visit www.PioneersResearch.org. For questions about listing your study, or about how to volunteer, contact Kieran Pemberton at [email protected] or 913-945-7567.

The Frontiers 2014 RFA is now being distributed. As occurred last year, we in Wichita are pooling resources with the Frontiers program to fund pilot grants. Investigators from Wichita who wish to access WCGME-KBA pilot grant funding must apply through the Frontiers RFA mechanism. There will be no other pilot grant program separate for this academic year. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Michele Mariscalco at [email protected] or Trisha Richmeier at [email protected]. View the RFA for the fourth round of funding.

University of Kansas has renewed support for an author’s fund to encourage open access scholarship at KU’s Lawrence campus and the KU Medical Center. The One-University Open Access Fund supports KU faculty and staff authors who make published research available through the more than 8,000 open access journals. Open access is the policy of making all research authored by university authors available to society at large through an accessible, online database instead of limiting the work to academic journal subscribers. In 2009, KU became the first public university in the United States to institute an open access policy in regard to research published in peer-reviewed journals. The second year of this pilot program will be supported by $25,000 in funding made available to KU faculty and graduate students at both the KU Lawrence and KU Medical Center campuses, including the School of Medicine–Wichita. Applications are being accepted starting today, July 1, and will be considered as funding remains available. More information regarding criteria to apply for funding and to complete the request form can be found at the One-University website. The One-University Open Access Fund is intended to assist those who have not received grant funding. Those applying for grants should budget funding for article processing charges in order to publish the results of their research in an open access journal. For questions about the One-University Fund, contact [email protected].

KU School of Medicine–Wichita researchers are looking for adults (ages 18-65) who are suffering from treatment-resistant depression to participate in a research study offering a cutting-edge treatment. To participate, the current depressive episode must have lasted at least eight weeks, and the participant must have had an inadequate response to all approved antidepressants administered during the current episode. The study will consist of 18-19 visits during a 16-week period. Each visit will last two to four hours. Participants will receive physical exams, lab assessments, study-related mental health assessments, and study medication at no cost. Participants will be compensated for their time. If you are interested or would like additional information, call 293-1833 or visit our clinical trial and research project website. KU School of Medicine–Wichita researchers are looking for volunteers (age 18-55) who are generally healthy and not suffering from any medical or psychiatric illness. Volunteers should not be experiencing any inflammation and, other than contraception, should not be taking any medications. Those who qualify will have two visits that occur seven weeks apart. During each visit, volunteers will undergo a brief history, physical examination, and provide a urine sample (to test for inflammation). Each visit will last 20-30 minutes and participants will be compensated for their time and effort. There is no risk if you participate other than the risks associated with undergoing a physical examination and providing a urine sample; participants are not required to take any experimental drugs or undergo any additional testing. If you are interested or want more information please call Jessica Rudick at 316-293-3806.
