JAZZ EDUCATION NETWORK (JEN) CONFERENCE 2014
Last week, the CvA attended the fifth anual JEN Conference in Dallas, Texas.
The Jazz Education Network is dedicated to building the jazz arts community by advancing
education, promoting performance, and developing new audiences.
David Vorhaus is an American-born electronic music pioneer with a background in physics and
electronic engineering. He started out as a classical bass player working with symphony orchestras
before establishing The White Noise in London in 1968 with BBC Radiophonic Workshop members
Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson. Founder of Kaleidophon Studios in London, and inventor of
the Kaleidophon instrument, an electronic double-bass-like instrument that he uses on his re-
cordings. Of the series White Noise albums, the 1969 one called "An Electric Storm" has a strong
cult status. David Vorhaus and his assistant Mike Painter will be at the Conservatorium van Am-
sterdam, working with students on:

Robin Eubanks is the premier jazz trombonist of his generation. Whether performing with his
groups, EB3 or Mental Images, or with the critically acclaimed Dave Holland Quintet and Big Band
- with whom he was an original member - Robin is an artist whose impact on audiences has
proven powerful and lasting. Robin has recorded seven albums as a leader featuring his original
music.
Eubanks makes it all work artfully, like tiles in an intricate, logical yet intuitive, and slightly surreal
mosaic', is what Jazz Times wrote. That mosaic is built from the very best that American jazz had
to offer in the past years. This is reflected in his impressing resumé: Elvin Jones, the Jazz Mes-
sengers, the Mingus Big Band, Eddie Palmieri and of course his key position in the Dave Holland
Quartet. Besides that, the trombone player is one of the few musicians that enriches his instru-
ment with electronic amplification and coloring.
