v Soleriana - little known music of Joaquin Rodrigo This welcome release titled ‘ Soleriana’ shines a light on a sliver of wonderful yet virtual-ly unknown music by the prolific Spanish composer oaqu n Rodrigo, whose large out-put has been overshadowed by the success of several of his own popular works. There is a lot of charming music here It is beautifully performed by the Orquesta de la Comu-nidad Valenciana under the direction of conductor oan Enric Lluna, warmly and vividly captured by IBS’ recording engineers. This recording deserves to sell a ton but has not yet. It is the revelation of just this type of release that is the mission of HBDirect’s Edi-tor’s Choice. U rgently recommended. 1CD# IBSC 82020 $15.99

The Budapest String Quartet Plays Brahms / Rudolf Serkin [4 CDs]In 1963 the Budapest String Quartet revisited the three Brahms quartets, which they had recorded triumphantly in the 78 era. High Fidelity called these stereo versions “a heart-warming release in every respect”. In this new reissue, the quartets are coupled with the benchmark Budapest recording of the Piano Quintet with Rudolf Serkin. Wrote High-Fidelity of this performance “One of those remarkable moments when top-flight artists are at a peak of inspiration. This is a noble rendition - monu-mental in scope, intellectually conceived, charged with scorching emotional intensity. It is Brahms-playing in the greatest tradition” 4CD# SBM G 19439789332 $23.99

Murray Perahia plays Schubert & Brahms [8 CDs]Murray Perahia’s versions of the three late Schubert sonatas released in 2003 were the top choice for these works in BBC Radio 3’s Building a Library. In solo Brahms - the F minor Sonata, Handel Variations and late piano pieces - Gramophone lauded Perahia’s “superfine musical intelligence and technique”. Mr. Perahia performs with

ietrich Fischer- ieskau in the singer’s 1990 recording (his seventh) of Schubert’s Winterreise (“ gripping performance...” - BBC Music) and the Brahms G minor Piano

Quartet he plays with the madeus Quartet (“Wild and urgent ... brims with energy and immediacy...” - Gramophone). 8CD# SBM G 19439788352 $25.99

Michael Tilson Thomas Conducts Charles Ives [5 CDs]Sony’s new release features yet another authoritatively idiomatic interpreter, Michael Tilson Thomas, conducting three great orchestras in the major orchestral and choral works of his compatriot, Charles Ives. Gramophone noted that Tilson Thomas gave “ stellar performance of the Fourth Symphony (with the Chicago Symphony Orches-tra)” and the Penguin Guide called it “among the most impressive Ives records in the catalogue.” Gramophone stated that the disc containing Three Places in New England with the San Francisco Symphony was “as fine a collection of Ives’s songs and short orchestral pieces as I’ve found on one release” . 4CD# SBM G 19439788332 $23.99

    New ReleasesCritics’ Choice - Standout

J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 / Lang Lang, piano [2 CDs]Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations stand alone in the piano literature as a work of unique artistry and brilliance. “Lang Lang offers the musical equivalent of a cinematic epic directed by Robert Altman or Steven Spielberg, with all repeats intact, including the Aria da capo. His Goldbergs are vividly detailed, markedly diverse in mood and expression, meticulously thought out in terms of style yet highly subjective, and brilliantly yet not brainlessly virtuoso.” – Gramophone

But there’s a whole lot of motivation...Heggie’s way with music, the way in which his choices unlock and intensify the poetry and drama of the words, is consistently illuminating, full of surprises.” – Gramophone

Schubert in Love – Schubert Songs / Rosemary Standley, vocals; Sandrine Piau, soprano; Ensemble Contraste

These arrangements of Schubert songs for voice and the instrumentalists of Ensemble Contraste are by Johan Fariot. “[Standley] brings her reedy, soft-grained folk voice to favourite numbers by the composer, gently but convincingly reworked in folk or jazz form… If you love Schubert but aren’t too much of a purist, you might fall hard for this – or at least fi nd yourself thinking about this music in a different way.” – The Guardian

Mozart: String Quintets, K515 & K516 / Adrien La Marca, viola; Quatuor Van Kuijk

“They repeatedly strike an incredibly fi ne emotional balance, and make it sound as if it’s the most natural thing in the world. There’s nothing precious or overwrought about these accounts: they’re buoyant, intelligent readings, vividly recorded...Time and again, they seem to me to catch this music exactly where it speaks most powerfully: balanced perfectly – poignantly – between laughter and tears.”– Gramophone

It’s the clear highlight of an album which benefi ts throughout from able partners in the Talinn Chamber Orchestra under conductor Kaisa Roose.”– BBC Music Magazine

I Will Walk with My Love, Folk-Inspired Songs & Myths / Paula Murrihy, mezzo-soprano;Tanya Blaich, piano“At a time when many opera singers are out of work and chances to hear the full-throttle human voice in all its glory are few, a new recital disc as good as this one feels more than usually like a treat... Murrihy’s voice dances through [the Grieg’s] melodic twists and turns. Blaich, her playing unfailingly expressive and fi nely judged, is supportive rather than soloistic and lets Murrihy hold the spotlight.” – The Guardian

Prokofi ev by Arrangement, Works for the Stage and Keyboard / Yuri Kalnits, violin; Yulia Chaplina, piano

Violinist Yuri Kalnits has participated in festivals throughout the world and has played at some of the world’s most important venues. “In [Heifetz’s] version the spiky, two-minute march from The Love for Three Oranges again displays brevity as pure genius; as often do the 20 piano miniatures of Visions Fugitives, arranged by Viktor Derevianko and Yair Kless, the violin sonority lending a new fascination.”– The Sunday Times

[Soltani] has all the qualities needed to win consistent critical acclaim, namely innate musicality, a yielding svelte tone, an agile bowing arm and a skillful deployment of varied vibrato. Listening to him is a great pleasure.” (Gramophone). “Kian Soltani was the sublime cello soloist, effortlessly lyrical and profoundly touching in the closing moments... The whole thing was outstanding – the best performance of the work I’ve heard live.” – The Guardian

High in energy and rich in expression and range of subject matter, these three works for mixed choral and instrumental forces show contemporary British music at its most accessible and engaging. “Three works for chorus with an instrument or two...Weir’s title piece, with clarinet (Hannah Lawrance) on top of percussion and keyboard, evokes fi ve colours in four movements – most notably Gold, a setting of Robert Frost – while the fi fth affords a spectrum.” – The Sunday Times

Bach: Cello Suites Nos. 3 & 4; Gyorgy Kurtag: Signs, Games and Messages for Viola / Tabea Zimmermann, viola“It comes as a revelation to hear Bach’s cello suites performed on a viola by this great German musician, Tabea Zimmermann. Here they have a dynamism never achieved on the cello, and her playing has a wonderful eagerness and persuasiveness. But the six works by the enigmatic Gyorgy Kurtag – who devotedly plays Bach on the piano – are no less of a revelation.” – The Independent

v Easter Cantatas of Johann Friedrich Agricola & Gottfried August Homilius / Kölner Akademie

I’ve had several enjoyable encounters with the music of Gottfried August Homilius, however I’ve heard little from Johann Friedrich Agricola. As fine as the Homilius Easter Oratorio is on this new cpo release, for their refined lyri-cism, it was the two Agricola cantatas that drew an even

greater warmth of attention. Performances of music from this era by the Kölner Akademie under the direc-tion of Michael Alexander Willens are steadfastly satis-fying, and this new release is no exception. Of special note for this highly recommended recording is the deli-cacy of the brass playing and Willens’ splendid vocal soloists. 1CD# CPO 555332 $15.49 On Sale

v Emilie Mayer (1812-1883): Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 / Leo McFall; NDR Radio POIn her day, Emilie Mayer (1812-1883) was afforded universal commendation for her comprehensive talent as a composer, if from some quarters begrudgingly, because of her gender. She wrote eight symphonies between 1845 and 1857. Her earliest two are classi-cal conceptions in Romantic garb, in the manner of Schubert and Schumann. Listening to this exceptional music, it struck me as disappointing that so few have advocated her music while at the same time, it is encouraging that those who have – notably cpo and Capriccio – have done so apportioning the artistic pro-duction quality the music warrants. This is a splendid issue! 1CD# CPO 555293 15.49 On Sale

v Carl Reinecke: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3; King Manfred / Henry Raudales; Munich RSO

Reinecke’s symphonies are currently available on only a handful of record-ings. This cpo issue makes a convincing case for their wider dissemination. Clock-ing in at over 80 minutes, this generously filled recording offers the Romantic German composer’s Symphonies

Nos. 1 and 3, as well as orchestral extracts from his opera King Manfred and the Trimphmarsch, Op. 110. Henry Raudales conducts the Munich Radio Orches-tra in these impassioned and technically impeccable performances. Having produced over three hundred published works during his lifetime, Reinecke is a com-poser ripe for discovery by plucky listeners. 1CD# CPO 555114 $15.49 On Sale

v Holst: The Cloud Messenger, op. 30; Five Partsongs, op. 12 In these performances by the Choir of King’s College London and The Strand Ensemble we can hear some of Holst’s most attractive and graceful music in the rarely performed choral-orchestral composition, The Cloud Messenger. The Cloud Messenger is a reward-ing listen, if perhaps occasionally uneven in quality. The work fell into obscurity following a disappointing premiere and remains undeservingly little known to this day. Rounding out the album to bring the program to just under an hour’s length are five delightful Partsongs by Holst for a cappella chorus.

    1CD# DELP 34241 $19.99

v Bassoon Concertos by Weber, Marcel Bitsch, Jolivet and Crusell / Theo Plath, bassoon

Winner of the 2018 German Music Competition and solo bassoonist with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, bassoon player Theo Plath and the Deutsche Radio Philhar-monie under Leo McFall bring us a program of two classical period concertos and two modern era concer-

tante pieces. The Weber concerto is well represented on disc; however, the other concertos are not. The eight-minute Concertino by Bitsch is an especially enjoyable piece. It is in two section, the first elegiac and lyrical while the second is a bubbly, Ravelian esca-pade. 1CD# GUIN 20683 $18.99

v Nancy Dalberg (1881-1949): String Quartets Nos. 1-3 / Nordic String Quartet

This release of Danish composer Nancy Dalberg’s (1881-1949) three string quartets presents the world premiere recordings of the outer two opuses. The three were written over a period of 12 years, between 1915 and 1927, and over that time, a change in Dalberg’s com-

munication is evident, moving from a largely Romantic language to one, while still tonal, that was more acerbic and agitated. With superb performances by the Nordic String Quartet, this recording will be welcomed by lis-teners drawn to Romantic chamber music discoveries. 1CD# DACO 6220655 $14.99

v Chamber Works with Guitar by Hans Haug & Castelnuovo-Tedesco; Wind QuintetThe program of this Naxos CD consists of three textur-ally contrasting works: the little-known Concerto for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra by Hans Haug (1900-1967), that same composer’s brief and charming Quin-tet for Winds, and a relative staple of the guitar cham-ber music repertoire, Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Quintet for guitar and string quartet of 1950. The works form an appealing program with the excellent Wind Quintet of Haug at its center, between the two works with guitar. Guitarist Marisa Minder performs with the Basel Phil-harmonic Quintet. 1CD# NXS 8551426 $12.99

v Extra Time - Music of Albinoni, Vivaldi, Mat-teis & Brescianello / La SerenissimaThe concept for this program from Adrian Chandler and La Serenissima (curiously titled “Extra Time”) of uncommon instrumental gems from the Baroque came about as the ensemble found themselves with an ex-cess of enticing material while programming an earlier release. The result is hardly a patchwork of disparate tunes, but a program of music by Albinoni, Vivaldi, Brescianello and Nicola Matteis the Younger which hangs together very nicely. Violinist Adrian Chandler’s discreet virtuosity and La Serenissima’s refined support make for 72 minutes of Baroque discoveries we all can savor. 1CD# SIG 641 $17.99

v Clarinet Quintets by Weber, Baermann & Krommer / Eric Hoeprich, clarinet

A founding member of Frans Brüggen’s Orchestra of the 18th Century and instructor at the Paris Conservatoire, Eric Hoeprich has for over 25 years been among the lead-ing exponents of the historical clarinet and its performance practice. On this Glossa re-lease, Mr. Hoeprich and the

London Haydn Quartet present two Classical era quin-tets for clarinet and strings by Weber and Krommer, and an Adagio from another quintet by Heinrich Baermann. While the Weber and Baermann pieces are available in multiple recorded version, the Krommer is a rarity. For listeners drawn to the program, this superb release will not disappoint. 1CD# GLS 920610 $18.99

v Adolf Barjansky (1851-1900): Piano Music, Volume 1 / Julia Severus, piano

This Grand Piano recording of piano music by Russian composer Adolf Barjansky (1851-1900) performed by Julia Severus reveals a com-poser whose music is deeply rooted in the Romantic tradi-tion with echoes of Tchai-kovsky, Brahms, Chopin and Schubert, while at the same

time sounding fresh and original. The program includes two sets of six miniatures, the Fantasy Pieces, Op. 9 and Piano Pieces, Op. 10 which bookend the more formally substantial Piano Sonata No. 1. It must be increasingly difficult for labels to turn up such wonder-ful music in world-premiere recordings, but evidently Grand Piano has a knack for it; I’m especially delighted to see that this Barjansky issue is designated Volume One! 1CD# GRPO 796 $16.99

    v Leó Weiner (1885-1960): Complete Orches-tral Works, Vol. 3 / Budapest SO

The music of Leó Weiner (1885-1960) reflects the folk music of his native Hungary as did his contemporaries’ Bartók and Kodály, but with a decidedly more Romantic flavor. In fact, listening to this music, while I was often re-minded of these two Hungar-ian masters, there is also an

apparent British influence of other composers for string orchestra - Butterworth, Grainger and Bantock as ex-amples. This Naxos release is volume three of a series of the complete orchestral works by Weiner, knowingly performed by the strings of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Valéria Csányi. 1CD# NXS 8574125 $12.99

v Our Favorite Things - music for percussion / Andrea Venet & Annie Stevens, percussion

Percussionists Andrea Venet and Annie Stevens present an enjoyable program of music featuring the softer side of the percussion family of instruments, highlighting the mallet components: marimbas, vibraphones, gongs and crotales. The mesmerizing program of

original compositions by Joe Locke, Ivan Trevino and Michael Burritt as well as arrangements of music from such diverse sources as Rodgers and Hammerstein and Radiohead concludes with a splendid jazzy improvisation on the Rodgers & Hammerstein tune “My Favortie Things”, a duo for marimba, vibraphone and percussion that dissolves into a shimmering stack of close, bluesy overtones. 1CD# RAEL 8038 $14.99

v Camillo Togni (1922-1993): Complete Piano Music, Vol. 5 / Aldo Orvieto, pianoThis is the fifth and final volume in Naxos’ series of the complete piano music by Italian composer and pianist Camillo Togni (1922-1993). On this release, pianist Aldo Orvieto has circled back to the composer’s earli-est piano works, and except for one brief track, all this music is appearing as world-premiere recordings. The music is characterized by a wide range of color and the juxtaposition of 18th century contrapuntal techniques, Romantic era virtuosity and sentimentality, and 20th century chromaticism. Togni’s music is easily recom-mended to any remotely adventurous pianophile.

    1CD# NXS 8573986 $12.99

v Ferdinand Rebay (1880-1953): Complete Sonatas for Violin/Viola & Guitar Ferdinand Rebay (1880-1953) was born in Vienna, and those roots are not lost on his music. While I didn’t uncover any facts regarding a formal training on the instrument, most of his available recordings are of chamber music that involves the guitar, as is the case here in these three sonatas for violin or viola and guitar performed by Laurence Kayaleh and guitarist Michael Kolk. The combination of the two instruments stays fresh throughout the program and there is a distinct Vi-ennese salon music feel to it. While it may be modest, the music is quite pleasant, idiomatically and master-fully performed. 1CD# NXS 8573992 $12.99
