● UNIT ESSENTIAL QUESTION: Why does a lot of hail, rain, or snow fall at some times and

not others?

○ Lesson 1: What causes this kind of precipitation event to occur? Monday

1. Prepare to explore some videos that show a perplexing phenomenon occurring outdoors. In

your science journal, titled “Exploring an Outdoor Phenomenon”, use the table to record

your noticings and wonderings for 3 different video clips.

2. Watch the first video: https://youtu.be/9PeACgaLC4A, which was recorded on April 7,

2013, in Fort Scott, Kansas.

3. Record what you notice and wonder in your table.

4. JOURNAL QUESTION: Share any experiences you’ve had with hail and how your experience

compared to what you saw in the video.

Page 4: JBM 6th Grade Math & Science · 2020-05-04 · JBM 6th Grade Math & Science Week of May 4, 2020 Each week there will be assignments for both Math and Science that will count as a

Tuesday

1. Watch the second video: https://youtu.be/Lx4TUg3TD-s, which was recorded on October

5, 2010, in Phoenix, Arizona.

2. Record what you notice and wonder in your table.

3. JOURNAL ENTRY: Describe some times when you’ve seen a lot of precipitation fall in one

place in a relatively short time (minutes). Describe some times when you’ve seen a lot of

precipitation fall continuously in one place over a much longer time.

Wednesday

1. Watch the third video: https://youtu.be/wwPnb-1qRtQ, which is a time-lapse video

recorded on June 10, 2013, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is sped up 60 times faster,

so each second in the video is equal to 1 minute of real time; this means that though the

video is only 99 seconds long, it represents 99 minutes of real time.

2. Record what you notice and wonder in your table.

3. JOURNAL QUESTION: What other types of weather phenomenon are present during hail

storms? Use evidence from the videos to support your answers.

Thursday & Friday

● Use the Initial Model 3-column chart to explain “What causes this kind of precipitation

event to occur?” on your copy of the worksheet Initial Model.

● Please READ the directions on the Initial Model sheet.

● Remember you are thinking of before, during and after.

● Words and labels are necessary to explain your thinking.

● SUBMIT FOR GRADING: Journal entries from 5/4, 5/5, 5/6, and Initial Model

Related Arts Art

with Mrs. Pitts Graffiti-Style Name Design

First, watch this video for an example: https://www.artsonia.com/teachers/ideas/entry.asp?id=12

STEP 1

· LIGHTLY sketch your first or last name.

· BE SURE TO LEAVE MORE SPACE THAN USUAL BETWEEN EACH LETTER.

STEP 2

Use some of the suggestions from the video to add “extras” to your letters:

· Make some curved parts angular, add extensions or “arrow points” to ends of letters.

STEP 3

· Use your pencil to “thicken” each letter into a bubble-style letter.

· Also do this with any lines you drew at the tips/edges of your letters.

STEP 4

Now, Use a Sharpie, (or a thin black marker) to outline these new letters and ERASE the guide letters

inside!

Page 6: JBM 6th Grade Math & Science · 2020-05-04 · JBM 6th Grade Math & Science Week of May 4, 2020 Each week there will be assignments for both Math and Science that will count as a

STEP 5

· Create a dripping paint effect: On the tops of your letters, it’s just a “bubble” shape that goes around

the tops. On the BOTTOM is where you can get creative and play with the length of your drip shapes.

· Do this in pencil first, THEN pen!

STEP 6

· Use a pencil and a ruler to draw horizontal parallel lines to start a brick wall behind your letters,

above AND below. (This can get tricky on the bottom where you will have to lift your pencil a lot to skip

over the drip effect!) Use alternating vertical lines to create the individual bricks and Sharpie over your wall

when you’re happy with it.

STEP 7:

· Use TWO color pencils for your letters:

· One color fades from the top down, the other color fades from the bottom up.

· You can leave the center of your letters white, OR allow the two colors to overlap a bit in the middle.

Tips for successful blending:

· Press harder where you want your color darker, and lighter as you start to fade.

· Layer your color pencil work in multiple directions for the smoothest look.

Page 7: JBM 6th Grade Math & Science · 2020-05-04 · JBM 6th Grade Math & Science Week of May 4, 2020 Each week there will be assignments for both Math and Science that will count as a

STEP 8:

Next, use a regular pencil to shade around your “drip border”.

· Press Harder close to the letters, and lighter as you move away from the letters.

· It is helpful to use your finger to soften and blend this shading work!

· Also, add a little emphasis to the edges and corners of your bricks--- it will help them look more 3D!

What have you been doing to pass the time since you have been home. Reading, playing games, talking to friends, sleeping, learning something new? Ms. Huff wrote a rap about what has been up to. Ms. Huff’s Example https://youtu.be/_PTy7FNcFNk Instrumental of Ms. Huff’s Example https://youtu.be/vKr-JP6t9aY Can you use my beat to make your own rap about what you have been up to? If you want you can try rapping to a beat that you like. YouTube is a great place to find instrumentals. If you would like to share what you create send it to me at [email protected]

Unit 6, Lessons 1 - 4

This week's focus is on expressions and equations. While there are many activities within this home

learning packet, there will only be one graded assignment this week. It can be found on the next

page. You may choose to complete the graded activity first and submit it to your teacher for

feedback. If you are struggling with the activity, it is suggested that you complete the following

activities. Once complete, you can take a picture and send it to your teacher through email, class

dojo, text, etc… or drop off a paper copy to school for feedback.
