    The inner complex world

    calls for SELF-AWARENESS.

    Our dilemmas as leaders

    are rarely right

    vs. wrongdecisions.

    They are usually right

    vs. right choices.

    Between Right and Right

    TECHNICAL

    ADAPTIVE

In making right vs. right choices,

    we reveal our values,

test our commitment to those values,

    and ultimately shape our characters.

    We define ourselves

    and the organization we lead.

    In Ignatian Discernment,

    we believe that

    in every given situation,

    Gods Will is

    the greater good

    to seek the greater good

    The greater good

    is what makes us

    less self-oriented

    & more other-oriented.But Ignatius warns:

    Gods Will is not always

    what seems

    more other-oriented.

Right vs. Rightchoices(or Adaptive Problems) call for DISCERNMENT.

    IgnatianDiscernment

    refers towhat we do

    to discover

    what God wantsfor us:Gods will,

    the greater good.

    A true story...

Jill decided to call for a prayer meeting

so they all could pray for openness. To decide, they agreed to toss coins.

The outcome wasto be considered Gods Will.

Sarah, who got the assignmentnobody wanted

shrugged her shoulders and accepted her fate:Its Gods Will.

Jill could not make decisionsabout the assignments of her teachersbecause all had very strong preferences.

  • 8/21/2019 Jcap Wisl 2014 Day 02

    14/35

Discerning Gods Will requiresa way of looking at God& a way of looking at life.

What is your face of God ?

What is your outlook in life?

    Discernmentis possible and makes

sense only if we believe:that God is involved in our livesand that we have real freedom

    within the constraints of nature.

    GOOD

Discernment is a search for Gods Will.

God can only want what is good.So discernment is NEVER a choice between good and bad,

or a decision between right and wrong

because God never wants something evil.

Discernment = always a choice between two goods

    For St. Ignatius of Loyola,

    Discernment =interior movements

    motions of the soul

    examining our thoughts(understanding),

    but also

    & ESPECIALLY our feelings,

    desires, memory, imagination

    Reason is overratedin discernment:

    Necessary but not suffi

We have often have unconscious or beliefsabout ourselves, others, the world, or life in general.

BELIEFS about SELF BELIEFS about Others

Im undesirable. Im inferior. Im notgood enough.

If others know me, they will reject. IfI put on a front, they may accept me.

I should be perfect. I cant makemistakes. I must be in control.

If Im not responsible, the world willfall apart. Others are unreliable.

Im helpless. I cant take care ofmyself. I need others to take care of me. If Ido it myself, Ill fail.

Im superior, special, or gifted. (Imactually inferior). I need to succeed.

If people dont treat me in a special,it means they dont value me.

Im nothing. Im not important. I need

    to be noticed.

If Im not entertaining or dramatic,

others will ignore me and not like

I never fit in. Others have nothing to offer me.Relating with them will only harm me.

Theres something wrong. Im bad. Illsurvive if I depend on myself.

Other people will abandon me. Theycant be trusted.

    What if I change them?
