Hair policies have been debated nationally and have received a lot of attention from the media. Due to the above, Jeppe has introduced a student forum. Each register class has elected a class representative to represent them. The forum is chaired by myself and additional executive members of staff include Mr Jackson, Mr Motlogeloa and Mr Leathem. The student representatives nominated three educators to represent them being Ms Bechus, Mr Gamede and Mr Ngema. To date, we have had two meetings about our hair policy and I have been impressed with the open and frank discussions that have taken place. As a result of these meetings the following steps have been taken: We are discussing the possible introduction of a new “Student Affairs” portfolio for the School management team for 2017. We have decided on the introduction of a hair committee consisting of 4 boys and an exec member. The purpose of this committee will be to implement the hair policy for 2017. We are in the process of finalising the new hair policy for our Code of Conduct. The members of the student forum are adamant that hair should be clean, neat, and reasonable and that fashion hairstyles should not be accommodated i.e. lines shaved on parting line etc. The boys are passionate and proud of their school uniform and believe strongly that the school should be governed with acceptable rules and regulations. A portfolio of photographs of acceptable hairstyles will be published and circulated to both boys and parents in the near future. This forum will also discuss other issues raised by the boys and there is an understanding that all issues raised will be discussed. I believe that this initiative will improve relations at school and that we will continue to move forward, keeping the values and traditions that make us all proud of our school. Mr. A. 8 September 2016 Newsletter 09/2016 HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE Dear Parents Over the past couple of weeks schools have been challenged with regard to their School Code of Conduct and the perceived bias of clauses on hair policies. To date, we have had two meetings about our hair policy and I have been impressed with the open and frank discussions that have taken place. As a result of these meetings the following steps have been taken:

We are discussing the possible introduction of a new “Student Affairs” portfolio for the School management

team for 2017.

We have decided on the introduction of a hair committee consisting of 4 boys and an exec member. The

purpose of this committee will be to implement the hair policy for 2017.

AB DE VILLIERS VISIT AND BOOK LAUNCH THURSDAY – 01 SEPTEMBER 2016 Jeppe were extremely delighted to have been asked to have AB De Villiers, the South African cricketer and test team captain, visit the school, do an interview and question and answer session with the boys as well as be the first venue for the launch of his autobiography. The boys were very excited when they found out that AB was to be the highlight of their assembly and to their credit were on their best behaviour. Having someone of AB’s standing in the eyes of the boys, actually be with and talk to them, is something the boys really relate to and certainly brings out the best in them. AB was completely astounded by the brilliant Jeppe welcome he received as the boys gave him a good minute or two standing ovation as he walked onto the stage. This before he had even said a word. Mike Bechet presented an extremely knowledgeable and in-depth welcome and then David Williams took over with the relaxed conversation style interview. AB was quite awesome with his honesty, humility and true enjoyment at being with the boys. He definitely charmed everyone in attendance, especially the cricket-mad boys.

The advice and insight he imparted to the boys in his easy going manner was truly valuable as the boys hung on his every word. Having gone through the traditional boys schooling system himself, his understanding of the aspirations, fears, concerns, etc. of the Jeppe boys were close to his heart. At the end of the assembly, AB presented Connor Mitchley (12F) with the prize for the best question asked during the question and answer session. And then, to crown it all, AB joined with the school in the singing of the War Cry. What an amazing experience for our boys.

Thank you AB for being an incredible inspiration to so many young men who look up to you!

CELL PHONES THEFT The school has had four incidents of cell phone theft reported in term 3 which is most unfortunate as we have experienced a minimum of theft during the year. These isolated incidents are being investigated and addressed by the school. In a certain incident, the learner was caught on camera and the SAPS managed to recover the stolen phone. The learner will face a full school governing body hearing. As a school we do take theft seriously and continue to adopt a zero tolerance policy towards any incidents. To date, we have through the department of education, managed to ask two boys to leave the school for theft related incidents. We have also completed the installation of 24 cameras around the school. We appeal to parents to work together with the staff and to please discourage boys from bringing phones, iPads or any electronic devises to school as these devices become distractions in class and provide an opportunity for a few boys to engage in theft. We also continue to engage with all our boys to look after their belongings at all times and during sports training and P.E lessons all bags are to be put together in one designated area. We appeal to the boys to report any incident of theft to any of the school educators in order for the Heads of Grade and Deputies to investigate the matter and have the boys know that this behaviour will under no circumstance be tolerated. JEPPE FACILITIES USED FOR PARA-OLYMPIC TRAINING Jeppe were very proud and honoured to have been of assistance to members of the South African Para-Olympic Rowing Team who utilised the gym facilities at the school in preparation for their Olympics in Rio.

Hi Mr Tee and Athi. Hope you are well? From Para rowing South Africa and Para Rowing Kenya, thank you so much for allowing us to use the Jeppe facilities in our preparation for the Rio games. Regards Barry McNeice

CONGRATULATIONS Jeppe High School for Boys are pleased to announce the appointment of Olivia Clark as the new Head of Grade for Grade 8. Ms Clark has taken over this responsibility from Jason Tee who has emigrated to England. Should any Grade 8 parents need to make contact with Ms Clark, her email address is [email protected]. Ms Clark has much to offer the Grade 8 learners and parents and the school wishes her well in this new position. We are also pleased to announce that Damien Pitman has been appointed the new Director of Culture with effect from January 2017. He has however, already jumped in and is very busy with his preparations for what he has in store for next year. ESKOM EXPO FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS (EST 1980) CONNOR CHAPMAN – GRADE 8F Congratulations to Connor Chapman who was awarded a Silver Medal for his project in the Eskom Expo. Connor’s project was entered in the Innovation and Technology Category and was titled – “Tablet Arm and Back Support”. There were 43 entries in this category with learners from Grade 8 to Grade 12 taking part. The preparation, work and implementation of the project took place during the second term with the final competition taking place at WITS on Saturday 30 July 2016. The goal was to develop a brace or arm support that would enable users of tablets to sit in an upright position with the tablet at a reasonable and comfortable height. The support would stop the user experiencing fatigue in their arms, neck and back. This would result in users retaining a correct posture without having to lean forward for support while still maintaining full control of the tablet with both hands. Connor received assistance and support from his mom and dad, who assisted with proof reading and demonstration for the final design, Ms Wasonga who was the project co-ordinating teacher and Mr McGeer who was the school’s project editor-in-chief. Connor was presented with his medal by Mr Dempsey in a school assembly and also received a personal visit from Ms Boitumelo Shilangu the GDE Natural Sciences District Facilitator, Johannesburg East D9 district, who was most impressed with his achievement.

SOUTH AFRICAN REPRESENTATIVE MATTHEW VAN BLERK (GRADE 12) Well done to Matthew Van Blerk who has been selected for the U19 South African Paintball Team that will be competing in the World Cup in France in the second week of September. We wish both Matthew and the South African Team good luck for this event.

JUNIOR MATSIETSA The school are delighted for Junior Matsietsa who has been selected to play for the Northern Cape Zebras Professional Basketball Team in the 2016 Basketball National League. Junior made his debut as a professional basketball player at the age of 18, making him the youngest player to compete in this league.

DEBATING REPORT by Ms. Northey On the 13th of August the senior and junior Model United Nations (MUN) debate delegations attended a special session at the Rosa Parks Library in Soweto. The focus for the session was The State of the Worlds youth. Both Jeppe delegations performed exceptionally well, with Ashley Maritz (Grade 11) taking home first place for best speaker, and Reece Bloemstein (Grade 11) and Eddie Ramohlale (Grade 11) taking home first place for best delegation. With MUN being a new activity for the boys, it has been great to see them placing so well at events. WEBSITE UPGRADE The school website is in the process of being upgraded. We are aware of the limitations of the current website and ask parents to please be patient a little longer as we get all the information included.

BRILLIANT ACHIEVEMENT BY THE JEPPE CHESS TEAM In the second term, our U15 chess players qualified for the Gauteng Department of Education District 9 district finals from the round robin stage. On Saturday, 13 August 2016, they played in and won the U17 final. This was an absolutely phenomenal achievement as all of these boys are U15. Well done and keep up this impressive representation – Jeppe is very proud of you! MOUNTAIN BIKING RESULTS SPUR SERIES HOSTED BY ST. Thankfully our riders came away unscathed and were not involved in any of the numerous accidents. The team has now moved into 19th place out of 55 schools which is commendable considering this is the first year of competition for this team. The best achiever for Jeppe was Aaron Heyneke who finished 6th in his category and received a special mention on the day as “an up and coming rider to watch out for”. Sub Junior Category (112 riders) 6th place - Aaron Heyneke 45th place - Aron Horn 52nd place - Timothy Lincoln

Youth 15 Category (123 riders) 39th place - Connor Coaklin

Youth 16 Category (119 riders) 52nd place - Bradley Moore

ATHLETICS The annual Inter House Athletics meeting took place on Friday 19th August 2016 with great participation and support from the learners and staff. The final result saw Sable House winning and ending the eleven year run of Tsessebe House. Also significantly on the day, Ntuthuko Ndimande set a new school record for the U15 400m sprint in a time of 51.5s, breaking the previous record set by Mr Brendan Gittins in 2001.

The new with the old – Mr Gittins celebrating the new record with Ntuthuko Jeppe hosted a most successful Triangular Athletics meeting with Parktown Boys High School and Pretoria Boys High School on Saturday 03 September 2016. The Jeppe athletes performed really well, winning most of the events. AQUATICS CENTRE The new aquatics centre is now in the final stages of completion and looking really spectacular. Both pools have now been filled and the first swim has already taken place in the warm-up pool.

Mr Laurie Stegmann New Aquatics Centre looking stunning Resident Estate Manager and Polar Bear LETTER FROM PAST PARENT The following heart-warming letter was received from Mrs Pepper, mother of Smith Pepper who matriculated in 2014. Certainly gives us hope in our education system.

I just want to take this opportunity to say thank you so much for all your help at such short notice. Because of Smiths SA education he has obtained a full ride (full 100% 4 year football scholarship) at Wright State University, Dayton Ohio. And people say SA education is not up to standard. He will be arriving at the University 4pm our time today. A thank you to Mr Dempsey, who turned the school around and made Jeppe Boys what it is today, a school that every boy in SA would love to be a part of, the fortunate boys get to live the rest their lives with a sense of value and pride, knowing where they came from. Thank you to Mrs Rattray for your continual support of Smith through his high school years at Jeppe. And finally, here is a direct quote from Danny Macbride (athletesusa) after receiving all this information regarding Smith “This information that you got from the school is BRILLIANT. And I just read through some of the curriculum for grades 10-12….. its higher level maths than first year college maths here!!!” Everyone n Thank you Jeppe High School for Boys Kind Regards Tracy Pepper
