Jeppe High School for Boys NEWSLETTER 07/2019
FROM THE HEADMASTER’S DESK
Dear Parents,
We are a few short weeks away from the end of Term 3 and are looking forward to the
start of Spring - which is hopefully now just around the corner!! The boys are currently in
the midst of Test Week with the matrics having started their preliminary examinations on
Monday.
As most parents know, we have put a lot of renewed emphasis and focus on improving the
academic results this term and it has been pleasing to see the support from parents, boys
and staff towards the additional academic support initiatives that we have put in place.
Over 800 boys have been regularly attending the Academic Support Programme which
has taken place from 14:00 - 15:00 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for the past few weeks with over 200 boys
attending the Maths Camps for Grades 8, 9 and 11 this past Saturday. The feedback from these initiatives has been
extremely positive and will hopefully see improved Term 3 and year-end academic results. My thanks must go to the
parents for making the logistical arrangements necessary to accommodate these programmes and to the academic
staff, in particular, who have supported these unprecedented initiatives without complaint and who have willingly
supplied this extra academic support to the boys despite the impact on their own logistical schedules, family
arrangements and other academic and extra-mural commitments. My thanks, too, to Mr Gittins and all the sports staff
who have amended practice and match schedules so as to allow these programmes to be successfully implemented.
This Friday, 30 August, we conclude Test Week, the Term 3 cycle test programme, as well as the Academic Support
Hour programme for this term. This will allow the educators to utilise the next two weeks to mark scripts in order to
ensure that Term 3 academic reports are ready to be issued on the last day of Term - Friday, 20th September.
As a matter of concern, we have been made aware of an increase in vaping amongst our boys. I refer parents to the
following article (https://news.sky.com/story/us-reports-first-vaping-death-amid-alarming-rise-in-severe-illnesses-
11792533) that was in the mainstream media last week, which highlights the dangers of vaping and I urge all parents
not to send mixed messages to their sons regarding the dangers thereof. I look forward to your support of the school in
this regard.
I apologise for the current lack of telephone lines at the school. As communicated through our various social media
channels, this situation is not of our making but has resulted from persistent cable theft in the greater Kensington area
and Telkom's consequent refusal to replace these lines. We have set up a temporary cellphone number 064 855 8555
for parents urgently needing to contact the school. We are currently investigating alternative options, and will inform
you as soon as a new system is in place. In the interim, please do contact staff via email or use the temporary line
which has been arranged.
Attached to this newsletter is a letter highlighting a research project encompassing twenty of the boys' schools in South
1st XI Soccer Team.

Africa and attempting to understand the excellence which exists within these schools and monastic education in
general in South Africa. Please could I request that parents take some time to answer the questions posed in the
survey which will assist not only the researchers in gaining a holistic picture of monastic education, but will also inform
future initiatives, areas of weakness, and perceived challenges within our own school.
From an extra-mural perspective, it was extremely pleasing to witness the 1st XI soccer team winning the prestigious
St Davids Festival for the first time in our history a couple of weeks ago. The Dramatic Society put on a fantastic "Rock
of Ages" production which played to full houses on each of the four evenings and was much enjoyed by cast and
audiences alike. Sebastian Prince and his crew obtained a silver medal at the recent World Junior Rowing
Championships whilst Sibusiso Shongwe (SA Schools) and Kabelo Mokhethi (SA Schools A) both did themselves and
Jeppe proud on the international rugby stage. Our chess teams also came first in their district leagues and represented
the school at the provincial tournament last weekend with our U15 team earning a bronze medal and placing them 3rd
in the province. In addition, our hockey club retained their title at the Kearsney 5's tournament whilst the Visual Art
Department also put on a wonderful display of artwork in their annual art exhibition that was much enjoyed by all. We
look forward to the remainder of the soccer season, most particularly our mass participation fixture against KES this
weekend which will see 16 teams in action, as well as the upcoming inter-high athletics event on Saturday, 14
September.
Thank you for your continued support of your boys and our School.
Kind regards,
Dale Jackson

COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA
Understandably, we are limited by space in our newsletter, and even though we would like to fill it with all the exciting
events happening around our extremely dynamic and busy campus, we cannot add every detail. We do, however, have
other forms of communication channels which are updated on an ongoing basis with frequent updates, tweets and
articles being published. These include changes in times, school events as well as fixtures and results.

MOUNTAIN BIKING TRACK
There have been some very exciting
events happening at Jeppe over the last
few weeks. The addition of the newly
opened Mountain Biking track is one of
those and it literally happened under our
noses!
The 3km track winds it’s way throughout
the school grounds and has been a
wonderful (and challenging) way for our
boys to practice some off road biking.
Please be aware that extra caution may
be needed on entering the campus as
you might be surprised by a group of
bikers flying past in the afternoons!
The following was received in an email
from our SGB Chairman, Mr. Berger, after his attendance at the opening of the track: I would like to congratulate you
and your MTB Club patrons for yesterday's event and indeed for establishing and growing this sport in the school. It is
incredible what focussed passion and dedicated commitment can achieve and for me this is exactly some what we
want our school to be about, namely, providing a platform for our greater school community of learners, peers, parents,
families educators and old boys to have some healthy, active fun while competing and challenging each other in the
spirit of true sportsmanship and camaraderie and enjoying the opportunities that have been afforded.
As I stated yesterday, I am encouraged by your initiative in growing this sport further and I will motivate further within
the SGB to offer more ongoing support to assist in the growth of this sport within our school.
EASTERN LOCAL FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION
Our last newsletter omitted to mention a THIRD boy selected to represent the Eastern Local
Football Association this season in the U15 team. CONGRATULATIONS to Tristan Bairos
in Grade 9 who will join his team mates on tour in September. We look forward to seeing
the success of these boys in the future!
MATHS LIT OLYMPIAD
Our Maths Lit boys narrowly missed out on 1st spot by 0.6% in the recent Olympiad. Jeppe walked away with a very
impressive 80.3% total and can definitely hold their heads high!Thank you Mrs Jones on accompanying the boys and
preparing them so well. Garsfontein High School won the Olympiad with 80.9%.
GRADE 9 SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
Both our learners who took part in the Grade 9 Science Olympiad can be very proud of their great performances.
David Williams (9F) took 1st place and Devon Lacy (9G) came 4th. There were 18 learners from three clusters
competing. Congratulations on these fantastic results. David will represent our district at provincial level at a later date.
Well done Ms Wasonga - the boys did incredibly well.
WITS MATHS COMPETITION
Congratulations to the boys who have successfully made it to the final round of the WITS Maths Competition. The first
round was written by approximately 30 learners in the second term. Grade 8: C. Dadswell, E. Serra Coelho,
T Tsotetsi
Grade 9: J. Bailie, P. Ibe, J. Snyders, C. Stevens
Grade 11: K. Motsisi
Grade 12: D. Fenthum, Z. Kayat
Thank you, Mr Dor, for your commitment to these learners.
JEPPE BOYS FROM 1ST KENGRAY PARTICIPATE IN 24TH WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE
Story and image: Diedre Maule
Jeppe High School for Boys learners, Christopher Park and Sabastian Cruz joined the South African Contingent of 143
youths and adults from SCOUTS South Africa and participated in 24th World Scout Jamboree.
They were joined by their fellow 1st Kengray scout Jonathan Diessel, and scouter Ewen McAlpine.
Every four years scouts from around the world gather for this adventure of a lifetime, and this year, from the 22 July to
2 August 2019, they were part of the 45 000 strong crowd of scouts and adults from 152 countries around the world.
This year the World Scout Jamboree was hosted by the United States of America, Canada and Mexico at the
spectacular Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia, USA – a 14 000-acre facility managed by Boy Scouts of
America.
Christopher and Sabastian from 1st Kengray Scout Group in Kensington had the opportunity to participate in activities
such as mountain biking, zip lining, skateboarding, scuba diving, rock climbing, shooting, archery and river rafting. In
addition, they interacted with scouts from around
the world and develop lifelong friendships in the
process.
The South African contingent also took in the
sights of New York City and Washington, DC on
their way to the Jamboree – the first time many of
the scouts had travelled outside the borders of
South Africa.
Scouting aims to develop our youth into responsi-
ble citizens and useful members of society and to
this end a World Jamboree offers scouts the op-
portunity to interact with youth from around the
world to develop them into global citizens. The
next World Scout Jamboree will be held in
Saemangeum, South Korea in 2023.

KARRI PAYMENT SYSTEM
All school tours - unless specified - will be loaded onto the Karri Payment System. Karri is a convenient way of paying
for tours (academic and sports) and includes options for part payments and the ability to track what is owed through
the convenience of an app. We recommend that this becomes your chosen method of payment to the school.
You can download the app through their website: https://karri.co.za/
