FROM THE NURSE HEAD LICE FACTS: Head lice are insects that are found on the hair of humans. Head lice
live close to the human scalp and move by crawling very quickly. They DO NOT jump or fly. Head lice are spread
by direct contact with the hair of an infested person. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has
nothing to do with getting head lice. Nits (also known as the eggs) are oval or teardrop in shape, very small
(about the size of a knot in thread), and are yellow-brown or white in color. Nits are firmly attached at the
base of the hair shaft with a cement-like substance. The adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed and
light brown in color, but the color can vary depending on hair color. Teach your children the following good habits
to follow: NEVER share hats, scarves, coats, combs, brushes, hair clips, etc. Parents are encouraged to check their child’s hair/scalp thoroughly and frequently for any signs of head lice especially if your child is complaining of itchiness. For more information, visit the CDC web-site at: www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/. If you have
any questions, please contact Mrs. Arena. Thank you.
