It is my pleasure to introduce our updated export market catalogue for 2013. Some of you may have already purchased semen from UK-bred Jersey bulls, from the UK Jersey Society and Cogent Breeding’s joint marketing venture. We appreciate your support and trust that you are pleased with the results, and will want to place more business with us. For others, we look forward to attracting you to young sires bred from dams where their herds have been blended, for at least the last fifteen years, from Jersey genetics across the world. This has given the UK an impressive female population, combining the merits of production, type, health and management traits.

We are delighted to be working with Jersey Island Genetics now as well. Through this link we can make available young bulls with outcross bloodlines. Island breeders continue to breed bulls from their traditional, pure, genetic base, and in Bees Knees we have such a bull which is part of the Cogent Visions young bull proving scheme.

In the UK the use of Jersey semen in cross-breeding, especially on maiden heifers, continues to become more prevalent. The Jersey moderates size while adding hoof health, fertility, milk components and improved climate tolerance where conditions require it. For pedigree enthusiasts and commercial herd owners alike, we seek to offer something different and special to your breeding programme.

“The UK has an impressive female Jersey Population”

Welcome

Jersey originsJersey cattle originate from Jersey Island the largest of the Channel Islands, just 14 miles away from the French coast.

The Jersey breed shares a common ancestry with the Guernsey and cattle found on the Normandy and Brittany coasts. The breed can be tracked back to 6000BC to the Middle East and even though it is difficult to trace, are probably descendants from the wild species Bos Primigenius, a wild savage beast better known as Aurochs.

There are now 5,000 Jerseys on Jersey Island in total with nearly 3,000 of these being adult milking cows.

Jerseys are known to exist in the UK mainland since 1741 and probably well before. At that time they were known as Alderneys.

Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837 and shortly after granted her Royal patronage upon the Royal Jersey Agricultural & Horticultural Society (RJA&HS). She visited Jersey Island with Prince Albert in 1846 and the following spring the RJA&HS founded the Royal Jersey herd at Prince Albert Farm, Windsor, by sending as a gift a two-year old heifer and a yearling bull with another heifer to Windsor Home Farm.

The Jersey Herd Book was founded in 1866 by RJA&HS, whereby virtually all Jersey Island herds became pedigree registered.

Her Majesty the Queen became Patron of the Jersey Cattle Society for the UK in 1954, thus continuing the royal patronage that started with Queen Victoria in the 1800’s and today, the Royal Jersey herd is kept in a new modern open building facility where the cows are milked through a robotic system.

History of the breed

English distribution of the breed The great distribution of the breed in England dates back to 1811, when Mr Michael Fowler from Little Bushey, Hertfordshire, became a trader of Alderney, Jersey and Guernsey cows. Mr. Fowler had four sons, three of whom followed him into the importing and exporting business and the Fowler family were responsible for trading many thousands of Jerseys, importing into the UK, and exporting to America, Canada, the European continent, as well as Australia, mostly before the age of steam.

Why Jersey milk? Over the years farmers in the UK and Jersey Island have sought to breed healthy cows that produce top quality milk. This has resulted in Jersey cows being renowned for the quality of the milk they produce, which has long been recognised as being rich and creamy in texture. Jersey milk has a ‘Glorious Trinity’ of three qualities – financial, technical, and commercial.

Financially the high compositional quality of butterfat plus protein reduces collection and processing costs for processors. The milk protein is worth even more as it is made up of a higher ratio of casein, particularly Kappa Casein BB, to whey.

Technically the quality of milk protein improves consumer experience of the products, especially ‘mouth-feel’.

Commercially the doe-eyed image of the cow has a value which can be exploited in marketing campaigns.

The milk is rich in colour which is naturally produced from carotene, an extract from feedstuffs like grass, the cows’ natural food.

The qualities of UK Jerseys

Page 6: Jersey Catalogue 2013

6

Longevity and efficiencyJerseys suffer half the level of foot problems of Holsteins and are renowned for walking a long way to grazing where the breed’s efficiency of feed conversion is demonstrated.

UK research at Reading University identified that Jerseys have a significantly different eating pattern compared with Holsteins. Jerseys like to snack, eating little and often. The diet, too, can be lower cost as Jerseys were found to need less crude protein in their ration, 16.5 per cent compared with 18 per cent for Holsteins, 12 per cent starch as against 22 per cent and 25 per cent higher levels of digestible fibre.

Jersey cows are also renowned for their longevity, having on average five calves.

Climate tolerance and fertilityJerseys are capable of dealing with climatic extremes better than other dairy breeds. Not only do they tolerate higher temperatures, without suffering from sunburn, the breed’s grazing persistence is more robust in high rainfall conditions.

Fertility is especially valued by farmers and the fecundity of heifers is such that many are now served from as young as 12 to 13 months old. In fact, it is unusual to find heifers calving at more than two years and three months old in UK herds.

UK production records and farm managementAlmost 20,000 Jersey cows are milk recorded in the UK and on the Island.

Jersey milk yield increased 12.5% in the decade to October 2012 to 5909kg in 305-day recorded lactations.

Weight of Fat + Protein is 544kg, exceeded only by Holsteins and Brown Swiss – both physically much larger and heavier breeds. British Cattle Movement Service statistics indicate that Jersey-cross females will soon equal the number of pure-breds in the country.

The FutureToday there are over 650 members of the UK Jersey Society, registering in excess of 10,000 calves each year.

It is a sign of the growing prominence of the Jersey breed that there continues to be more farmers wishing to move to Jersey production, especially in the regions with favourable milk marketing opportunities and this has triggered an increase in stock values.

The UK Jersey Society is working hard to expand the market for specialty Jersey products and sales of liquid milk have grown more quickly in the consumer market than other fresh milk categories.

Further progress has recently been achieved with Longley Farm and Fayrefields both requiring all their contracted farmers register their cattle in the Herd Book. This decision was driven by the firm’s desire to see all the advantageous traits of the purebred Jersey cow being maintained and a need to be able to answer, in full, customers’ enquiries about the provenance of the milk.

The Jersey is the second most popular specialist dairy breed in the world after the Holstein and we are working hard to make it second to none!

Roy Boy’s great-grand dam is UK’s first 100-tonne Jersey cowDanish LG Anneka EX90 has become the first Jersey cow to produce 100 tonnes of milk in the UK. In her seventh lactation, Anneka, a daughter of Jas Bel, reached the cumulative total of 100,716kg milk at a lifetime average of 5.00 percent butterfat and 3.72 percent protein.

When Roy Wilson of Lagangreen, Co. Down, Northern Ireland imported a batch of Danish Jersey heifers to compliment the milk quality of his Holstein herd, little did he know the success and profile this venture would bring him.

One particular family from this original importation has like cream, risen to the top!

The Anneka’s are now synonymous with top ranking PLI cows on the UK listing. Several members from this family have featured highly in the UK Jerseys’ production and milk quality competitions. Roy Wilson comments: “Soon after her seventh calving I thought, this cow could crash the 100-tonne barrier this lactation if I don’t rush her back into calf.”

When Roy was satisfied Anneka could comfortably achieve the 100 tonnes, he AI’d her to sexed DJ Broiler, taking only one straw to make her pregnant. In 305 days Anneka produced a staggering 13,216 kg at 4.49% Fat and 3.52% Protein.

Anneka is the matriarch of the family and has obviously passed her production genetics to both her daughter and grand-daughter. Daughter Lagangreen Sambo Anneka EX90 has already clocked up 60 tonnes in four lactations and is still going strong. Grand-daughter, Lagangreen Impuls Anneka VG86, has just completed a second lactation of 11,364 kg. Impuls Anneka is the dam of Lagangreen Roy Boy, currently a Super Sampler within the Cogent Breeding / UK Jerseys Visions young sire programme.

The Lagangreen herd is made-up of 40 Jerseys and 250 Holsteins.

JERSEY ISLAND gENETICS

From 1,000 registered milk producers

with an average of five cows each in

the 1950s, Jersey Island’s vibrant and

forward looking dairy industry in 2013

is a far cry from the picture postcard

perception that many still hold and

today the majority of the 5,000 head

of cattle on the island are kept on just

15 farms and with the largest herd now

milking 300 cows. All but one of the

25 milk producers belong to the farmer

owned co-operative Jersey Dairy.

The temperate climate enjoyed by the 9 x 5 mile island, which sits just 14 miles from the French coast, allows Jersey to grow grass with great ease and so the breed in its island home has been fashioned towards a grazing animal with excellent mobility, depth, capacity and robustness. However many of the larger herds now base diets on a mix of ensiled grass and maize during winter months so the cows and genetics behind them are tested across a number of differing management systems.

The isolation of the indigenous cattle population is something that is strongly guarded both by pedigree breeders and Jersey’s government alike and following many years of animal health testing and assessment the Island herd can boast an exceptional and enviable health status, being free from TB, Brucella, EBL, IBR, BVD and Leptospirosis Hardjo. In addition to which 100% of animals are officially milk recorded (98+% independently monitored) and all first lactation animals are linear assessed and classified according to the programme and scales used by both the UK and Jersey Island populations.

The original and in many cases globally untapped cow families found here offer an exciting opportunity for breeders around the world to source genetics from new bloodlines, completely different to those offered by semen suppliers over the past 25 years.

In 2008 the Island opened its doors to imported genetics for the first time since well before the establishment of the Jersey Herd book in 1866. Having to meet an enhanced pedigree status, in support of the unique position the Island holds, semen from some of the world’s top Jersey bulls is now being skilfully used across a majority of herds and the blending of these two distinct genetic bases is showing some fantastic results.

The ‘Home of the Breed’ can therefore offer you something very different; untapped cow families with amazing depth of breeding, unique pedigrees and now, with the advent of importation, pedigrees combining the best the Island has to offer blended with bulls proven under your management system.
