Maaghof: Aparment building in ZurichProject Architect, 2009-2011Rutz Architekten/AGPS Architecture, Zurich

This 41,300 m2, 211-unit apartment building wraps around three sides of a park in the core of a developing central business district in Zurich. Sharing one side with another developer and architect, the building’s ambiguous form is conceived in three separate masses that incorporate the neighboring building into a reading of four volumes arranged around the park.

Page 3: Jesse Honsa Architectural Portfolio

The facade materialization is an ‘approximation’ of the neighboring building’s yellow brick: glazed ceramic and metallic-gold plaster gives the overall impression of a unified courtyard while maintaining subtle differences.

The flat mix features 44 different apartment typologies.

The east and west wings are organized with flats that occupy the 18 m depths. The 12,5 m northern wing features south-facing, flexible typologies, accessed from a corridor along the north fassade. High-end flats occupy the top floor, with spacious terraces and views over the city. The lower two floors feature office space and smaller “business flats.”

Passages to the courtyard are choreographed to views though the neighborhood. Apartment lobbies occupy the corners of the passages.

Necessity of Ruins: The Estonian Academy of ArtsCompetition, 2008RISD Advisor: Peter Tagiuri1st Place, RISD Alumni Travel Grant 2008

The school of art is imagined as an enduring ruin reinhabited: mediating between an institution as eternal terra firma, and an unbounded, adaptive space for invention.

Sited in a radically transforming Eastern European capital city, the ruin is considered an extension of the “geologic” medieval town of subterranean passages.

Page 9: Jesse Honsa Architectural Portfolio

Unrolled section and corresponding plan: a reading of “Geologic” Tallinn

Page 10: Jesse Honsa Architectural Portfolio

The façade exemplifies the diversity within the school of art: framed by monumentally large apertures in the concrete ruin, classroom facilities are built from corporeal, impermanent wood species.

As a school of art, a place for the exchange of ideas, the ruin is considered a stratified “campus” of atria, arcades, and terraces.

Quarry (Labor)atory“Architecture of Trees” RISD Advanced StudioCritic: Peter Tagiuri, 2007

Deep within a state park in Rhode Island, the quiet remnants of a long-abandoned quarry are absorbed into the lusciousness of the forest.

A laboratory mines the forest for resources and information: slowly moving along the quarry walls as it excavates granite, mills lumber, and cultivates new growth in greenhouses that ultimately reforests the void.

Page 13: Jesse Honsa Architectural Portfolio

Plan: Greenhouse Laboratory, Library, Lumber Mill, Drying Racks, Quarry walls

Page 14: Jesse Honsa Architectural Portfolio

“Quarry-grown Lumber”: irregularly situated trees in the quarry develop concentrations of tensile and compressive fibers, much like reinforced concrete. Early experiments with splitting, reversing, and binding tree trunks neutralizes irregularities.

Derrick crane-like roofs, suspended from the quarry walls

Page 15: Jesse Honsa Architectural Portfolio

Small, enclosed programs, such as the library, hover above the cold, wet quarry floor; nestled within the large, industrial space formed by stacks of drying lumber, quarry walls, and the canopy-like roof.

A single-run stair, extending from entry to building rear, accesses the main four floors of the house. The resulting 50 foor long interrupted spaces are services by baths and storage “tucked-in” above and below the primary stair.

Citadel of Art: LuganoRISD Advanced Studio/Accademia di Architettura, Mendrisio Switzerland, 2006Critic: Lynnette WidderPublished in Empathy and Abstraction

The isolated character of a 19th century slaughterhouse in a modern, urban setting is preserved as it becomes a “citadel of art”: an extended promenade leads patrons around and through the complex.

Like the art center itself, the reception of art is understood as a “4-dimensional” procession: patrons often have the ability to view works from multiple vantages. Three volumes orbit the large performance hall as part of this procession.

Field Housing: Millbury, MARISD Urban Studio, 2005

Critic: Anne Tate

A former textile mill with an extremely deep footprint is converted into a “mat” of housing. A system of courtyards and terraces are carved out of the roof,

like an extension of the skylights endemic to deep industrial buildings.

Page 21: Jesse Honsa Architectural Portfolio

Units are arranged vertically:

-south-facing living areas adjacent to garden terraces-sleeping quarters at a “stoop” level, arranged around courtyards-public circulation running through courtyards-parking at the basement level

De/Motown: A Retroactive Arcology for Detroit1st Prize, Think-Space “Urban Borders” competitionCollaboration with Filmmaker Greg Mahoney

This proposal uses the Central Business District of Detroit, already largely abandoned, as a found-object for an investigation of the skyscraper as a typology.Recognizing that skyscrapers have remained largely single-use because of a de-centralized system of circulation dependent on the elevator, this proposal hinges on a ramping, viaduct that connects the towers at multiple levels. It takes the form of a helix, intersecting itself to create a lattice-work of movement.

A play between monolithic and tectonic forms of construction. Dimensioned wood rests between the continuous steel armature.

A bolted plate allows an adjustable tolerance to the ash slats’ movement: the steel bends and allows the ash to respond to additional weight.
