A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE
RABBI
I find that I often get unhappy when I do a life review and say, "I should have done this", or "I should have done that". It's not that there are many regrets, but they do exist. The problem is that when we look back and say: "I should have", there is really nothing that can be done; in most instances the moment has passed and rarely can
it be recaptured.

This week's Torah portion, Beha'Alotecha, has an answer to this lament. It opens with Aaron being told to light the seven lamps of the Menorah with the lamps facing forward. This causes one to pose the question: "Why would it specifically say that the lamps must be facing forward?" As always with Torah, there are many answers; however, I am going to keep it simple and focus on one of my own thoughts. So why is Aaron told that the lamps must face forward? It is because we should always strive to face and move forward. When we get caught up in the past, or focus on things that have already happened, the negativity can be overwhelming. The fact that there are seven branches on the Menorah is not random. The number seven is inherently connected to creation, to the days of the week, and to completeness. Thus, we are reminded that we need to face forward vigilantly, with all of our heart, all of our soul, and all of our might. But it goes just a bit further. In our tradition, the word "light" is often a euphemism for Torah. If the light of the lamps represents Torah, then it is our Torah that should always be facing or moving forward. We are obligated to continually push our Torah forward whether we are living it, learning it, or teaching it. I am referring to Torah in the meta-sense; it is the Torah of good deeds, the Torah of kindness, the Torah of justice, the Torah of mercy. We light the Menorah, the Menorah Lights the Torah, the Torah Lights the world. Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

The LUNCH AND LEARN discussion with Dale Jacobs, M.D. and Renee Jacobs, M.S.W., L.C.S.W. following Shabbbat Services was attended by 60 people and a lively dialog followed their presentation.
Copies of their book "Parenting When Your Child Is An Adult" will be available in the office for $10.00. The proceeds will be donated to the Rabbi's Discretionary fund.

"Putting your money where your mouth is".
David and Jonathan Falkowsky wanted to collect food for the Monmouth & Ocean County Food Bank so they got two cartons and put signs on them and placed one in the foyer and one in the Social Hall of the JCC. But they wanted to do much more so the family volunteered to go once a week to the warehouse in Neptune, NJ to stock shelves and pack boxes. Both David and Jonathan have committed to volunteering for 10 hours each and that does not include the time Mom and Dad are putting in when they accompany the boys.
Please help them by bring packaged food to the JCC and placing it in the boxes provided. Their B'nai Mitzvah is June 27th and then they will be leaving us to move to Tempe, Arizona. Let's send them off in a way that they will always remember the JCC of LBI with fond memories.
