August already, and in less than a month, most kids will be back to school, Friday night
high school football and Saturday afternoon football starts up, and planning begins for
fantasy football leagues. August is also the last full month for the pool to be open as
the Labor Day Weekend is soon approaching.
Last month I commented that the pool had been used extensively due to the number
of 90+ degree days. I stand corrected: the pool has been used extensively due to the
number of 100+ degree days! It seems if the temperature hits 90 degrees, it’s a cool
down! Again, thanks to Eric for keeping the pool in
compli- ance with the Health Department regulations
and the pool Chairpersons and staff for keeping the
pool area cleaned and providing a safe swimming ex-
perience. Hopefully, you will have a chance to visit the
pool be- fore the summer swimming season ends.
Thank you to the volunteers who installed piping for the
sprinkler system around the north end of the marina.
Over the years, the staff has worked hard to create a
watering system to keep the grass green during the
dry times of the year. For those who may not know, the water used is obtained from
the lagoon.
Congratulations to FCoS Ramon Eickert, the Jr. Sail Committee and all those who
worked the PCYC North Coast Jr. Regatta. The weather was extremely hot, atrocious
may be the appropriate adjective to use, but according to Ramon, a record number of
junior sailors participated in the race. As a result, the grounds were extremely con-
gested and the Board would like to thank everyone for their patience. Following the
Regatta, the Junior Race Team went to Put-in-Bay and participated in Junior Bay week.
Congratulations to all the junior sailors and see Ramon’s report for the results.

What a gorgeous day!! I did not
get this writing task completed
late last night by deadline so I
am spending my lunch hour on
the beach at PCYC. I am sit-
ting on one of our benches
(thanks to the bench repair
crew of last summer) over look-
ing beautiful Lake Erie. The
sky is a cloudless solid blue
punctuated by an over flying B-
17 historic aircraft. The water
in the shallows appears crystal
clear and there is hardly any
muck along the break wall this
year. The water is an aqua,
blue-green mix with white caps
dotting the horizon due to a
strong south breeze. (this is
where I hit the wrong button
and deleted everything on my
first attempt.) I feel like I am
on a South Sea tropical island.
The young children are playing
on the exposed sandbars that
reach half way to the exposed
rocky Crib. The water has been
really low this weekend and
usually we do not get this clear
of a view of the obstruction just
offshore. I have a need for a
boat ride to Put-In-Bay.
This past weekend there was so
much going on in Port Clinton
and at your club. I started off
at the Grand Opening of the
Liberty Air Museum, then a
quick stop for breakfast and
Bloody Mary's at the ever so
popular PCYC morning gather-
ing on the deck. It was then
time to take my Russian guests
out on the lake for swimming,
skiing, and wave running. On
return to the Club it was time
for the pool and then on to
watch the talented Jeff Bugbee
in a Playmakers performance. I
had to miss The Ohio State
Alumni Band at Lakeside but
the play was outstanding. On
Sunday I participated in the
Rim Fire Match at Camp Perry
before returning to the Club
and the pool. It is amazing
that many of the thousands of
participants at the National
Matches do not know they are
on the edge of a water wonder-
land.
It is getting really hot out here.
Time to head back to air condi-
tioning!
August will be a great month
at the club. While you enjoy the
facilities others will be working
on a water meter project. We
have continuous other activi-
ties including water leak re-
pairs, lighting maintenance,
trash usage analysis, irrigation
installation, storm damage
pickup, weed and lawn control,
window washing,
other projects and
strategic planning.
If you are looking for
something to do con-
tact Eric, Chuck, or
myself. The pool is
fantastic!!! Come
over and enjoy your
Club.
PCYC Memories:
In the 70's, August was con-
sumed by trips to the Bay, wa-
ter skiing, and sailing. We re-
ceived a dock credit because
the boat was away from the
dock more than it was tied up.
It was impossible to keep up
with Ken Hershey on the num-
ber of excursions to Put-In-Bay
but I tried my best. It is proba-
bly hard to believe that Ken
and I ever drank a beer back
then, but we consumed a few.
On one late night return, I was
instructing my friend how to
navigate by the stars and oper-
ate the boat while I rested my
eyes. As we turned the corner
in the lagoon he commented
about the campfire down by the
hoist. I thought about it for a
minute before realizing that 1.
city ordinance does not allow
open fires within 50 feet of boat
docks or houses and 2. who
would be having a campfire at
2:00 am. I jumped up, took con-
trol of the boat and sped down
to the fire. Yes- I made a wake
in the lagoon! I bowed in to the
nearest dock, jumped off the
bow and told my friend to go
dock my Dad's boat. I forgot
that he had never docked the
boat before.
The back end of a Lyman was
engulfed in flames. I grabbed a
hose and started putting out
the fire. It was only later that I
realized I was standing on top
of a burning gas tank. After the
fire was
extin-
guished I
noticed
the canvas
was par-
tially
opened on
the boat
on the same dock. I looked in to
see the glow of a cigarette of
someone trying to get to sleep.
I suggested he not flick his
cigarette out unless he knew it
would land in the water on not
on the adjacent boat. After
alerting the Caretaker of the
need for a fire watch it was
home to much needed sleep.
Avoid the Crib, put your ciga-
rettes out, and enjoy August!

Ok, where did July go? It seems just last week it was the 4th of July Celebrations at the club and we were looking forward to the Middle Bass Island Yacht Club Cruise Out July 20 – 22. As I write this Jib Sheet article I am happy to say, despite some nasty weather on the 20th, the Cruise out was a huge success! We had 21 boats and 70 people attend the event. This is also the first time for me that I ran
out of all the fixings (liquid type) for the Saturday morning brunch!
August will be upon us very soon and we have 2 Cruise outs planned. First, August 3-5 at Kelley’s Seaway Marina, which has been renovated and looks great, although some of us may have to raft off depending on how many boats go to Kelley’s Island. As of
this writing we have around 15 boats scheduled.
Secondly, Thursday August 9th will be a day at Rattlesnake Island, beginning at 12:00 noon. Last year we had about 90 people attend and everyone had a ball. Please check the Cruise Out Registry in the bar as some people have signed up to go but have no boat, so we will have to “buddy up” on the boats that are attending and take some other members with us. Within the next week I will be check-ing with everyone who has signed up to go to confirm the details
about Rattlesnake.
It’s hard to believe but on the horizon is the dinghy/small boat Poker
Run on Sunday, September 2nd.
Please enjoy the rest of summer and stay cool.

Dave Mehl FCoP

They did a great job and made
learning fun for the kids.
Another special thank you goes
out to Dr. Suzie Leone for running
the Learn to Sail Program and
again to Tristan Nighswander for
going beyond his hired role as In-
structor by maintaining the boats
and running the Race Team pro-
