FOREWORD

Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) is the world’s largest youth and music network with member organizations and partners in more than 80 countries, developing demand-driven programs that empower youth on local, national and international levels. JMI is a “glocal” non-governmental organization that enables young people to develop through music across all boundaries. Over 36,000 diverse musical events are held each year in JMI’s 62 member organizations alone, that reach almost 5 million young people aged up to 30. For 65 years, JMI has been ‘Making a Difference through Music’, using the power of music to bridge social, geographical and cultural divides and create an international platform for intercultural dialogue.

A message from the President

‘Think Globally, Act Locally’ . Today we often hear the word ‘Glocal’, and this expression seems to appear more often when we talk about JMI, our work our projects and our mission. We are all part of a proud international music network. Music unites, and it’s by far the major interest of young people around the world. This indicates that even our local activities for young people have a global dimension. This has been very evident during the work that has been carried out for a new set up of the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra. We also clearly see this importance in the strong – local and global – involvement of young musicians throughout the Ethno program. And this is also a very apparent and appealing dimension of Music Crossroads, where everything indeed starts from a very local level but progresses into something with undoubtedly greater dimensions and international scope.

To be aware of, and take advantage of the connection between the local and the global is crucial. It’s a remarkable potential we have within JMI and it gives us a strong ‘raison d’être’. The benefits however do not appear automatically – they have to be worked on

strategically and pragmatically. When I gaze over the network and its activities I’m filled with warmth and pride. And of course the majority of all the local activities, projects, programs I don’t see, even though I know they are there. But I see the international programs and projects we have, and it is evident that the stronger they are connected locally, regionally, nationally the stronger the project and the whole network becomes. Thus through our combined organic growth we reflect on the achievements of the past year, and by doing so whet our musical appetites when imagining what lies ahead for JMI’s musicians, listeners, organizers and supporters around the world.

Truly yours,Per Ekedahl, JMI President

Our creDOFor 65 years JMI has recognized music as an important tool for building sustainable human development cooperation, as music brings people together, breaking down barriers, creating platforms for dialogue and boosting the creative potential for innovative sounds and musical landscapes.

Our main objectives are for young people, musicians and audiences to have access to music. providing opportunities for young people to explore different realms of expression, imagination and creation through music improves not only young people’s mental well-being and confidence, but can be a catalyst to growth and change. as such we advocate for quality formal and non-formal music education for young people and greater music learning for young audiences. JMI takes an important role in providing opportunities for young people’s personal development. young musicians are given the chance to perform, gain visibility, and make careers from the skills they have worked so hard to develop, providing them with confidence to take their first important steps in their musical careers.

The world of tomorrow belongs to the young people of today. They are the agents of change, and music is one of their most powerful and dedicated means, a true language of expression. JMI works to help young people realize their dreams through music because we believe that their voices must be heard. engaging with music can help young people develop the self-esteem they need to assert themselves within their personal and community spheres, taking action in directly shaping the norms, values, beliefs and principles of tomorrow and the course of their future in their respective society. every event is based on the belief

that the powerful force of music can positively affect young people’s lives.

In 1949, JMI created The Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, the first international youth orchestra of its kind. Partnering with key international orchestras and working with top class young musicians, soloists and conductors including Zubin Mehta, Leonard Bernstein, Charles Dutoit, Yakov Kreizberg and Kurt Masur. The orchestra has to date toured in over 30 countries, bringing together around 5,000 musicians and touching an audience of 2 million people. The Orchestra was bestowed the title of UNESCO Artist for Peace in 1997. The Session 2009 was held in Bilbao focusing on opera production Poulenc’s ‘Le Gendarme Incompris’ and ‘Les Mamelles de Tiresies’ in a co-production with Bilbao’s Teatro Arriaga and Barcelona’s Liceu. It was followed by a successful tour of Spain, with Maestro Josep Vicent, principal conductor of the JMWO.

After five excellent years in Valencia, Spain, in 2010 JMI will set sail to a new endeavour that reshapes the way the world looks upon “classical” music, by firmly placing the music in the hands of today’s youth, directing the limelight to a new generation of composers, musicians and audiences. As such the JM World Orchestra will advance the standard orchestra model into the future with a groundbreaking exploration of global symphonic sound-scapes, inspired by and treasuring the classical music of all cultures bringing forth a new symphonic sound to world audiences.

a glObal schOOl OF InTerculTural unDersTanDIngThe World Youth Choir is original and unique in its concept, bringing together talented young singers aged 17 - 26 each year from all over the world. Since its creation in 1989, the WYC has established itself as one of the most remarkable musical and intercultural experiences offered to young singers, meeting annually during the summer for intense rehearsals followed by an international concert tour. It has thus far gathered more then 1,500 singers and performed for an audience of more than 1 million people worldwide.

In 1996, UNESCO honoured the World Youth Choir with the title UNESCO Artist for Peace. The 2009 summer session with 80 young singers from 34 countries was organized in Gent, Belgium in collaboration with Koor & Stem, Vlaams Federatie

van Jonge Koren, the City of Gent, the Province of Oost Vlaanderen, and the Vlaamse Gemeenschap. The concerts were held in Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands and France. The World Youth Choir performed an academic program based on early 20th Century choral music conducted by Johan Duijck (Belgium) and contemporary and folk-based choral music from Latin America, conducted by Ana Maria Raga (Venezuela). In October the World Youth Choir gathered in Orebro, Sweden to celebrate its 20th anniversary in the presence of many of its former conductors and singers who were specially invited for the occasion. Special media and communications campaign with DVD recording of the anniversary concert was organized for the anniversary. For more information visit www.worldyouthchoir.org

Today, when many world cultures are facing continuous cuts in music education, JMI fills this gap, with over 40% of its activities targeting young audiences with outreach in schools, colleges, families and communities to introduce young ears to all styles of music and provide youth with the opportunity to develop their imagination, creativity and critical thinking. The Young Music Audience Award aims to identify and support cutting-edge live musical productions that impact young people both socially and artistically, with a focus on targeting and engaging vulnerable/at-risk groups of youth from marginalized communities and deprived areas, addressing issues of vital concern (eg. violence, poverty, discrimination, abuse, HIV/AIDS) and using music as a tool to promote intercultural dialogue and understanding.

Following the pilot edition of the Young Audiences Music Award in 2008, JMI has launched its bi-annual edition in 2009. The Award will be given in 2010 to the best professional live music production for young audiences, that promotes the important work they do for new generations of music-lovers, consumers, concert-goers and musicians. The award honours creativity and innovation in the field of musical productions for young audiences, from all corners of the world, created by community groups, schools, NGOs, companies, bands and ensembles of all forms, from solo artist to orchestra. Imagine represents an open platform for all young musicians aged 12 to 19, where anything goes! Whether rock or classical, pop or world, the power of Imagine is in bringing together young people from all musicals styles to expose audiences to a variety cultures and forms of music. In addition to the stage performance, musicians are offered workshops in music and life skills development, supporting them to further develop their music careers! Festival by nature, the program also includes elements of a competition, its unifying competition criteria being musical skills, originality, preparation, communication and stage charisma. In 2009, six Imagine festivals for all styles of music were held in Belgium, Croatia, Norway, Sweden and Slovenia. Imagine currently outreaches over 31.000 young musicians annually and over 210,000 people as audiences (primarily young audiences). The winning groups are offered a number of prizes, including tours and performance opportunities abroad and within the JMI membership network. The 3rd International Imagine showcase was organized in Kranj, Slovenia on the occasion of the JMI Annual General Assembly in July 2009. More info at www.imagine-festivals.com.

through music program, providing youth aged between15 and 25 in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia, with musical opportunities and exposure and training in musicianship and life skills. The program has grown to reach over 75,000 musicians and a combined audience of over 100,000 people per year in these five target countries. This has been achieved through over 40 annual festivals, performance training and international band tours, as well as workshops focused on music rights awareness, social interaction, gender issues and HIV/AIDS prevention, organized by the national Training Centers.

The program is coordinated by Music Crossroads International, a non-governmental, non-profit association located in Barcelona (Catalonia), Spain, and in cooperation with local Music Crossroads partners in the five countries, this locally owned program provides the flexibility required to incorporate specific needs whilst promoting unified objectives and shared values. The highlight of the program is the Music Crossroads InterRegional Festival, being the ultimate competition for upcoming bands in Southern Africa. Surrounded with workshops, cultural events, jam sessions, festivities and celebrations, IRF goers are able to share their cultures and learn from others though the language of music. The 2009 Inter-Regional Festival was held in Livingstone Zambia and was won by Nyali, a band from the Zambian capital Lusaka. In the same year, the 2008 winner, Mokoomba, toured Europe as part of their prize won at the Inter-Regional Festival in 2008. For more information please visit http://www.music-crossroads.net/

Through a combination of workshops, jam sessions, seminars, and performances at some of Europe’s biggest folk music festivals, the Ethno music camps provide musicians with the opportunity to learn from and teach each other a variety of musical cultures from around the world, and sharing what they have learnt with audiences, enriching society by keeping the music traditions alive and youthful. As such, Ethno is also a great life experience, bringing together participants from a variety of cultural backgrounds and becoming a space for intercultural learning, friendship, and exchange.

There have been six Ethno Camps in 2009 organized by our partner and member organizations in Sweden, Slovenia, Croatia, Estonia, Belgium and Uganda, gathering more than 360 young musicians from across the world. In 2010, we are proud to welcome Ethno France, Ethno Denmark and Ethno Scotland. A dedicated Ethno website www.ethno-world.org operating under the umbrella of JMI and supported by the Council of Europe keeps track of all on-going and upcoming Ethno events and exchanges between the participating countries.

Fair Play: Anti Corruption Youth Voices is a global competition for original songs by young musicians under the age of 35 on the theme of anti-corruption and good governance. The competition is an initiative of the Global Anti-Corruption Youth Network, a worldwide network of civil society organizations with the specific agenda of fighting corruption, in partnership with Jeunesses Musicales International and the World Bank Institute. The Competition is a call for young musicians to join the global anti-corruption youth movement, and ensure that the global community hears their messages.

In 2009, nine international musical ambassadors were selected from Bangladesh, Burundi, Cameroon, Colombia, Lebanon, Macedonia, Philippines, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe, who have recorded and released their own original tracks in order to motivate and engage young people worldwide in the development of good governance models. Music groups and bands from 21 countries have applied and more than half a million people have seen their on-line videos worldwide through different social networks and the JMI web site. The winners of Fair Play: Anti-Corruption Youth Voices 2009/10 will be invited to perform at the group’s international summit Spring 2010 in Brussels, Belgium. JMI proudly recognizes two international arts centers as World Meeting Centers of JMI – The International Cultural Center of Jeunesses Musicales Croatia in Groznjan (Croatia) and the Musikakademie Schloss Weikersheim (Germany). These cultural centers, established by JM Croatia and JM Germany, are open to young people from all over the world. They provide a special musical environment for development, education, and exchange of ideas; and offer various musical and artistic workshops and seminars with

well-known lecturers & professors. These centers also act as a home away from home for the JMI network, the inspiring landscapes of Groznjan (a medieval town on the Istrian peninsula in Croatia) and Weikersheim (a 16th century castle overlooking the Tauber Valley in Germany) serve as dynamic working environments for JMI network meetings. The Groznjan center is a dedicated space for young musicians’ development and education while the Weikersheim center acts as center of excellence for youth orchestras and ensembles.

buIlDIng capacITIes, sTrengThenIng relaTIOnshIpsOver 220 professional staff and more than 2000 volunteers cater for the annual local and international activities of the JMI network.

The JMI Platform Meeting serves as a focal point for JMI members’ representatives to get together, exchange opinions and ideas, discuss and steer all international JMI programs and initiatives. Some 45 members of JMI Commissions, Committees and Working Groups came together April 2009 in Paris to follow up and pursue the works of each entity on the spot, preparing for the reports and presentations at the 64th JMI AGA in Slovenia. A capacity building workshop focusing on strategic planning for network working entities was held to strengthen the work of the Committees prior to their meetings.

The 64th JMI Annual General Assembly was held in Kranj, Slovenia, dedicated to the power of music, it has showcased various music programs that JMI implements throughout the world, including Imagine and Ethno. In addition to participating in network development discussions, representatives of JMI member organizations from around the world took part in two workshops - the first focused on the future JMI development strategy and the second challenging the perceptions of classical music impact on the human personal development. The JMI Executives Meeting is a unique platform that gathers the executive officers (directors, general secretaries) from our member organizations. It enables them to debate strategic development issues from an executive perspective. Following the successful Fundraising Workshop held in Weikersheim in December 2008 where JMI embarked on a new path of international social work through music, the latest Executives Meeting in Pomaz, Hungary in November 2009 laid the grounds for the development of the new JMI strategy for the period 2011-2015, redefining JMI as a development organization and placing the international JMI programs as key careers of the JMI brand, mission and development objectives.

Following the proposal submitted at the Annual Regional Meeting of JM Europe in Kranj, Slovenia to establish an international youth and music day, JMI, supported by the JM sections of the Flemish and French Communities in Belgium, partnered with the European Youth Forum to organize a pilot event in the heart of the European Institutions in Brussels, in Park Maelbeck next to the building of the European Commission.

The event was held on the 9th of September 2009 and thus aptly entitled 999: An Open Youth Day. The European Youth Forum organized an open day for young people and for European youth organizations to present their work on open stands, and featuring an open stage concert with four bands from Belgium: Jack In The Box,

The Steppin’ Stones, Perils of Penelope and Opmoc, participants and winners of the Music Live (Imagine Belgium) Festivals of the French and the Flemish Community.

The main objective of the project is to raise interest and awareness among local international institutions, public and especially young people about the importance of music and youth participation in Europe. Jan Figel, now the former European Commissioner for Education, Training & Culture officially opened the event. Following the successful pilot, JMI will further scale up this initiative to include more bands and participants in particular from other countries and establish a widely accepted and recognized International Youth and Music Day!

A new JMI website was launched 28 April 2008, reflecting plurality and the variety of the activities and the JMI membership targeting the 5 million young people who get involved in JMI activities each year. Huge in scope, the JMI website is a hub of information on global activities empowering youth and connecting communities. The event listings, photo gallery, music, videos and more invite the public to discover JMI’s wide array of projects and programs for young people and is at the heart of this vibrant global movement. JMI.net also invites young musicians to sign up for a musical passport, linking them directly to international opportunities and an inside route to discover a global network of musical adventures. JMI operates an extensive social network of projects, members and activities via Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube, enabling direct involvement and interaction with its members, their staff and the young people who participate in JMI’s projects and programs. In 2009, JMI outreached around 50,000 people through direct online social mediums, with a total outreach of over 1,000,000 people worldwide through all JMI’s digital channels.
