Jnr-trained Gunstock, who with Saturday’s success became the 32nd
individual stakes winner for his late sire Tavistock (Montjeu), was a
$135,000 buy for Import Racing from the Ohukia Lodge consignment
at last year’s Ready2Race sale, having been purchased by Beatson for
$80,000 out of the Cambridge Stud draft at the NZB Karaka yearling sale.
The colt was making his fourth career start having only broken his
maiden last month at Cranbourne, before running third behind Saturday’s
runner-up El Patroness (Shamus Award) in the Super Impose Stakes
(Listed, 1800m) on October 2.
Forgot You, meanwhile, is having his chance for a crack at the Cox Plate
(Gr 1, 2040m) this weekend contemplated by trainers Trent Busuttin and
Natalie Young, with the horse then taking his place in the Derby a week
later, for which he is the current $4 favourite ahead of Gunstock at $4.50.
“The Derby is there regardless of which way we go,” co-trainer Natalie
Young said. “But if he was to win a Cox Plate … nobody really wants to
stand a Derby winner.
“We’re thinking about it and in discussions with the owners. The
sensible thing to do would be to go to the Vase but it’s not every day you
get a horse to run in a Cox Plate.”
Forgot You, who when sold for $330,000 was the fourth highest-priced
two-year-old at last year’s Inglis sale, defeated Exford Plate (Listed, 1400m)
winner Mr Mozart (Snitzel) to win the Stutt Stakes, while his running-on
sixth in the Caulfield Guineas saw the Ozzie Kheir syndicate-owned colt
compete with his generation’s best over a mile.
“Forgot You has come out and been pretty sharp, he’s always shown
that speed early on and was a nice horse,” Beatson said.
“It’s good to see Trent doing so well over there, being from New
Zealand. Australian racing is just so good at the moment. To get them
over there racing is huge and getting them winning Group races is even
better.”

Beatson under his Ohukia Lodge
banner took a large consignment of 18 two-year-olds to last year’s Sydney
sale, which in addition to Gunstock and Forgot You has yielded the Bjorn
Baker-trained stakes-placed juvenile Akahata (Pins).
“We took a whole heap last year during Covid and Inglis have been
pretty good to deal with. Covid has obviously made things more difficult
this year, as we’re not able to get over there. But we’ve targeted six nice
horses to bring over,” Beatson said.
“There are a couple of nice stayers who can do a Derby trip hopefully
and then a couple of middle distance horses and a couple of sprinters.
“We target a bit of everything really, and just try to purchase nice
horses that look like they’ll make a racehorse. We don’t specifically target
stayers or sprinters, but we’ll go through and look at all the colts and a few
fillies and we’re looking at ones that are real athletes.”
Among the Inglis consignment is a Written Tycoon (Iglesia) colt out of
Racy (Exceed And Excel), an offering that lands in the precocious sprinter
category, and won a Taupo trial on Friday over 800 metres in 48.57 secs,
having breezed in 11.07 secs at Cambridge.
“He had a couple of weeks off before the breeze up, having just skinned
his fetlock, so he only had two rides before the breeze ups here. We knew
he was fast so we breezed him up and then gave him the opportunity to
trial as well,” Beatson said.
“We’ll probably breeze him up again as well but he’s a nice horse and
will run early. He’s quite speedy and had been showing us lots at home
and he won that trial quite nicely.”
Also among Beatson’s draft for the Inglis Ready2Race Sale is a Darci
Brahma (Danehill) colt that breezed in 10.74 secs, while the ‘Derby’
horses by Savabeel (Zabeel) and Belardo (Lope De Vega), who is a half-
brother to Group 1-winning champion stayer Glory Days (Red Giant),
make up the six.
“It was a lot harder to buy this year with the strength of the market.
We’ve managed to pick some nice horses that we quite liked and had a
couple of weanlings as well to add to our consignment,” Beatson said.
“The sales are getting better and better. The New Zealand sale is quite
well established now and has seen many good New Zealand horses have
come out of it. This Inglis one is getting better and better every year.”
Inglis took the decision to delay their breeze up sale, originally
slated for October 12, by two weeks due to the prevailing Covid-induced
restrictions at the time which saw much of NSW in lockdown.
With restrictions in NSW now, for the most part, having been lifted
by new state premier Dominic Perrottet, Inglis’s general manager of
marketing and bloodstock, Sebastian Hutch, said that the decision to
delay appeared vindicated.
“We’ll be doing as much as we can to get as many people as we can
either at the sale or engaged in the sale,” Hutch said to ANZ Bloodstock
News yesterday.
“Our understanding at the time of announcing the delay to the sale,
given our conversations with the relevant authorities, was that the delayed
date would be more suited to conduct the sale and that’s how it’s looking
like playing out. Conditions for getting people to the sale are far more
favourable than what they were two weeks ago.
“Obviously, it also helps that in the last two weeks graduates have
continued to come out and run well. Gunstock and Forgot You bring the
number of stakes winners out of last year’s sale to four, which is fantastic,
while Malkovich was just beaten in a Group 2 sprint on Saturday as well.
“We feel this catalogue is at least as strong if not stronger than last year.”
The alternate breeze up will take place at Warwick Farm on October
22 ahead of the sale itself next Tuesday, October 26. The full catalogue can
be viewed here.

Elleegant to bounce back in Cox Plate Trainer Chris Waller is backing his nine-time
Group 1 winner Verry Elleegant (Zed) to return
to winning form in Saturday’s Cox Plate (Gr 1,
2040m) after running fourth in the Turnbull
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) behind Incentivise
(Shamus Award) on October 2. "She was flat
after the Turnbull," Waller said. "We couldn't
find any soundness issues, she was as sound
as a bell. She just wasn't her bouncy self for a
few days but after a few days in the paddock,
the team have cuddled her and she's back."
The six-year-old mare galloped at the Moonee
Valley track on Saturday in preparation for the
weight-for-age feature, in which she finished
12th behind Lys Gracieux (Heart’s Cry) in
2019. “She went to Moonee Valley (Saturday)
morning and she worked really well. Damian
Lane rode her and he said that she felt great,"
Waller said. "She's eating more than she was
eating in Sydney, so that's a good key to her.
I've had that problem with her before in the
spring where her appetite's not as good but to
see her appetite the same as it was leading into
the (2020) Caulfield Cup, I'm starting to get a
bit more bullish about her chances."
Incentivise to swerve Cox Plate Trainer Peter Moody has said it is ‘highly
unlikely’ that he will back up Saturday’s
Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winning star
Incentivise in this weekend’s Cox Plate. "I would
think highly unlikely," Moody told Racing.com.
"I am talking out of school because I haven't
spoken to the owners this morning but just my
own gut feel, it's the first time I've arrived on
a Sunday morning and he's a bit jaded, left a
bit of tucker overnight, unlike me. He's in good
order and bouncing and feeling well enough
but I just thought he was a bit more jaded than
he had been previously.” Should Incentivise
take on another race this spring it will be in the
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on November
2. “I would suggest that he is probably only
going to get one crack at a Melbourne Cup
this horse,” Moody continued. “Depending on
handicaps and the way he bounces back, that's
probably the race to aim at if we run in another
race at all this prep."
Moody urges moderate Incentivise weights rise The revised weights for the Melbourne Cup
are set to be released today, and Moody
warned handicapper Greg Carpenter against
giving his Caulfield Cup winner Incentivise a
significant rise. "I'm not going to go down the
path of trying to convince handicappers but
I've got to be honest, that would play a part (in
deciding to run)," Moody told RSN 927. “We
were probably weighted up to our best at that
point in time (the release of handicap weights)
and I understand from my conversations with
Greg (Carpenter) that if they get that pretty
steep penalty going into the Caulfield Cup it
probably lessens their risk of a severe penalty
going to the Melbourne Cup. He (Carpenter)
is very good at his job but we won't crucify
the horse and I'm confident that he won't. He
will give us a chance to take the horse there to
win it (the Melbourne Cup) if the horse is well
enough, I'm hopeful of.” Carpenter has only
ever issued a weight increase of two kilograms
to a Caulfield Cup winner for the Melbourne
Cup, however predecessor Jim Bowler slapped
a 3.5-kilogram penalty on 1997 winner Might
And Power (Zabeel), as he successfully backed
up to win the Cup.
Avalon on Manikato path Shane Nichols believes Streets Of Avalon
(Magnus) is back in form to notch another win
at Moonee Valley when he takes on Friday’s
Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Streets Of
Avalon won the Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)
in January before going on to win the C F Orr
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) next start. “He's going
really good," Nichols said yesterday. "He'll
gallop at Mornington (today), which is a race
day, so he'll work on the rail. His work last week
was really good, he's bright and well and in as
good condition as I could want him." Streets
Of Avalon was scratched from the Sir Rupert
Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) after returning
bad bloods following his fifth placed finish in
the Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and Nichols
opted against the Moonga Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m)
at Caulfield on Saturday. "I think the way the
Manikato is going to dress up, it's going to be
a better option for him, and it doesn't look as
though it's going to be any harder than the race
he won at The Valley earlier,” Nichols added.
“Then he can go to the Kevin Heffernan Stakes,
a Group 3 over 1400 metres at Caulfield and
then have a break for the autumn."
Duais out of Melbourne Cup Following a disappointing display in Saturday’s
Caulfield Cup, Edward Cummings has decided
to abort plans to send Duais (Shamus Award) to
the Melbourne Cup. The Queensland Oaks (Gr
1, 2200m) winner was on a three-day back up
after winning the Coongy Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m)
on Wednesday, but could only finish 16th
when returning to Caulfield on the weekend.

Wilde in Tralee Rose dilemma The withdrawal of Duais and that of Realm Of
Flowers (So You Think), as well as injury to
Quick Thinker (So You Think) and the tragic
death of Sir Dragonet (Camelot), has promoted
Tralee Rose (Tavistock) to 23rd in the order
of entry for the Melbourne Cup. The sudden
elevation leaves trainer Symon Wilde at a
quandary as to whether to start the mare in
Wednesday’s Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). "It
really boils down to whether that is the best way
to get her to the Cup," Wilde said. "I'd say we'll
accept, but if she doesn't race, she's going to
need a good gallop somewhere and we'll need
to weigh that up, see if we can get access to a
good grass surface. If we can't, it might be better
to run."
Gold Cup the target for Baker pair Bjorn Baker will target the $500,000 Rosehill
Gold Cup (2000m) with Soldier Of Love
(Mawingo) and Kiss The Bride (Savabeel) after
the pair finished first and third respectively in
The Star Mile (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.
“He likes it wet and he loves Randwick," Baker
said of Soldier Of Love, who was recording
his second win this preparation in defeating
favourite High Supremacy (Savabeel) by half
a length. "This horse just keeps raising the bar
and the better the odds the better he goes." On
Kiss The Bride, Baker added: "He went super
too. He's on target for the Rosehill Gold Cup in
a couple of weeks where he’ll get in placed on
the minimum (weight)."

First for Sweet Orange Sweet Clementine (5 m ex Wealth Star by Senor
Pete) provided her sire Sweet Orange (War
Front) with a first individual stakes winner
when successful in yesterday’s Staphanos
Classic (Listed, 1950m) at Rotorua. The Richard
Collett-trained five-year-old, who is from the
second crop of Sweet Orange, defeated Beaudz
Well (Zed) by a head with River Run (Pour Moi)
the same distance back in third after a blanket
finish. Bred by Brent Gillovic of Highview Stud
and his son, Kurtis, Sweet Clementine is out of
the unraced Senor Pete (Green Dancer) mare,
Wealth Star, a half-sister to the Australian Group
1-placed sprinter Wealth Princess (San Luis).
Sweet Clementine was a $75,000 purchase for
Collett from the 2018 NZB Karaka yearling sale.
Sweet Orange, who has stood six seasons at
Highview Stud, was sold to China earlier this
year.
success with yesterday’s Staphanos Classic
winner Sweet Clementine, with the handler
targeting the Balmarino Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at
Ellerslie on Melbourne Cup day should current
lockdown restrictions in Auckland be eased to
allow the race to take place. “I’d like to target
the stakes race at Ellerslie for her next, but I
guess that is all dependent on whether they will
be racing there,” Collett said. “I’m expecting
some news around the whole Covid lockdown
in Auckland in the next week or so and it would
be nice to think there is an easing of the border
restrictions to allow racing to take place at
Ellerslie.”
Tavi Mac back to form at Rotorua Tavi Mac (6 g Tavistock - Bellaroof by Maroof)
recorded his first stakes success in nearly
eight months when winning the Sweynesse
Stakes (Gr 3, 1215m) at Rotorua yesterday. The
six-year-old beat Packing Rockstar (Fastnet
Rock) by a length under Danielle Johnson,
with Mascarpone (Shooting To Win) a further
half-length back in third. The win was Tavi
Mac’s 12th success in 19 starts and saw the
gelding bounce back from a ninth place finish
behind Mascarpone in the Foxbridge Plate
(Gr 2, 1200m) six weeks ago. “He’s never not
competed so it was a bit of a mystery at Te
Rapa,” trainer Allan Sharrock said of his last
start. “We took him home and gave him a good
going over and found an issue with his shoulder
that Tommy Burns worked on and got right, so
a big thanks to him.” Sharrock will now look at
a return to Group 1 company for Tavi Mac, in a
bid for an elusive elite-level win. “I’d like to run
him in the Captain Cook at Trentham, but he
will need a start before then,” Sharrock said. “I
want to give him a start at 1400 metres before he
goes to the mile, so we will look around for one
in about two weeks for him.”

53 for Deep Impact Akaitorino Musume (3 f ex Apapane by King
Kamehameha) gave sire Deep Impact (Sunday
Silence) his 53rd elite-level winner when she
won the Shuka Sho (Gr 1, 2000m) yesterday at
Hanshin. Trained by Sakae Kunieda and ridden
by Keita Tosaki, the three-year-old filly beat
dual Group 3 winner Fine Rouge (Kizuna) by
half a length with Group 2 winner Andvaranaut
(King Kamehameha) the same distance further
back in third. Bred by Northern Farm and
owned by Kaneko Makoto Holdings Co Ltd,
Akaitorino Musume is a fourth foal out of five-
time Grade 1-winning mare Apapane (King
Kamehameha) and is a sister to smart winners
Jinambo and Rhinebeck.
Third for El Roca El Roca (Fastnet Rock) sired his third individual
stakes winner as Lucky Patch (5 g ex Gould
by Danehill Dancer) upset the odds to win
the Premier Bowl (Gr 2, 1200m) at Sha Tin
yesterday. The Francis Lui-trained five-year-
old stayed on well at the finish to get the better
of Super Wealthy (Epaulette) by a neck under
Zac Purton with Stronger (Not A Single Doubt)
a further three-quarters of a length back in
third. Bred by Gerry Harvey, Lucky Patch was
purchased for $40,000 by GPI Racing, Healey
Racing and Andrew Williams Bloodstock at the
Magic Millions National Yearling Sale in 2018.
He is an eighth foal out of Danehill Dancer
(Danehill) mare Gould. El Roca stands at

Sweet Clementine NZ RACING
gave her sire Coulsty (Kodiac) his first
individual elite-level winner when she was
an easy winner of the Queen Elizabeth II
Challenge Cup Stakes (Gr 1, 9f ) at Keeneland
on Saturday. Trained by Chad Brown and
ridden by Flavien Prat, the three-year-old
filly chased her stablemate and the eventual
second Technical Analysis (Kingman) down
the straight, getting level before pulling away
at the finish to win by five lengths, the margin
of victory being the furthest ever recorded in
38 runnings of the Grade 1 contest. Burning
Ambition (Uncle Mo) was a further one and
three-quarter lengths back in third. Bred by
Oliver Donlon, Shantisara is a third foal out
of unraced mare Kharana (Dalakhani) and
was sold at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up
Sale in July 2020 for 10,000 guineas (approx.
AU$19,500). Coulsty currently stands at
Rathasker Stud for a fee of $4,000 (approx.
AU$5,390).

Slumber - Breakfast Time by Kitten’s Joy) added
another Graded success to her CV when she was
a narrow winner of the Sands Point Stakes (Gr 2,
9f) at Belmont on Saturday. Bred and raced by
Sol Kumin’s Head Of Plains Partners, the three-
year-old filly rallied well from an unpromising
position in the home straight to just get up at
the line under Joel Rosario to beat Runaway
Rumour (Flintshire) by a neck with stablemate
and race favourite Higher Truth (Galileo) a
further half-length behind in third. The filly was
already a winner of the Jimmy Durante Stakes
(Gr 3, 8f) back in November last year.
IRE: Belardo filly Elysium back on top Elysium (3 f Belardo - Sonning Rose by Hawk
Wing) got back to winning ways when she
won the Garnet Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Naas
yesterday. Trained by Noel Meade, the three-
year-old filly added to her win in the Weld
Park Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) as a two-year-old as she
beat Emphatic Answer (No Nay Never) by half
a length with Oodnadatta (Australia) a further
two and a quarter lengths behind in third.
Shuttler Belardo (Lope De Vega) stands at
Haunui Farm for a fee of NZ$10,000 (Plus GST).
79 for Dark Angel Musetta (4 m ex Miss Quality by Elusive
Quality) became the 79th individual stakes
winner for her sire Dark Angel (Acclamation)

(Listed, 1800m) at Longchamp yesterday. The
four-year-old was a length-and-a-quarter
Olivier Peslier with Layla (Lope De Vega) a
further three-quarters of a length back in
third. Musetta was a €90,000 purchase at the
Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale in
2018 and is owned by Jean-Pierre Bervoets. A
fifth foal out of Miss Quality (Elusive Quality),
she is a half-sister to winners Vivre Pour Vivre
(Pour Moi) and Thuit (Duke Of Marmalade).
Dark Angel stood at Yeomanstown Stud in
2021 for a fee of €60,000 (approx. AU$93,800).
18 for Toronado The consistent Bois D'Argent (4 g ex Madonna
Lily by Daylami), who has not been out of
the places in eight previous starts, stepped
into stakes company for the first time and
duly obliged for Francis Graffard in the Prix
du Ranelagh (Listed, 1600m) at Longchamp
yesterday. The four-year-old became the
18th individual stakes winner for shuttle
sire Toronado (High Chaparral). Ridden
by Olivier Peslier, Bois D’Argent beat Jeri
(Lawman) and Breizh Eagle (Bow Creek) to
take his tally to four wins from nine starts. He
is a half-brother to recent Prix Jean Romanet
(Gr 1, 2000m) winner Grand Glory (Olympic
Glory), out of Madonna Lily (Daylami) and
from the family of Alzao (Lyphard). Toronado
shuttles to Swettenham Stud where his fee for
this season is $49,500 (Inc GST).
FRA: Seachange to be retired after career defining victory Seachange (4 m Siyouni - Ydillique by
Sadler’s Wells) gained the biggest win of
her racing career as she won the Prix du
Conseil de Paris (Gr 2, 2200m) at Longchamp
yesterday. Settled in the front trio, the four-
year-old ran on well for pressure when asked
by Maxime Guyon and just managed to put
her head in front at the finish to beat Mr De
Pourceaugnac (Camelot) by a head with The
Good Man (Manduro) a further length and
three-quarters back in third. A homebred
by Wertheimer & Frere, she is a seventh foal
out of Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) mare
Ydillique and is a half-sister to the Listed-
winning Tristesse (Broken Vow). It was
confirmed by her trainer after the race that
she will now be retired for breeding duties.
First for Zarak Lizaid (2 f ex Litaara by Wiener Walzer)
remained unbeaten in the Preis die
Winterkönigin (Gr 3, 1600m) at Baden-Baden
and became the first stakes winner from the
first crop of Zarak (Dubawi). Tracking the
pace, she picked up in the closing stages
to win by two and a quarter lengths from
Rondina (Intello) while Barina (Gleneagles)
was a short head away in third. Trained by
Peter Schiergen, the Gestüt Zoppenbroich
homebred broke her maiden on debut
last month at Hannover and is an exciting
prospect for next year. She is out of Litaara
(Wiener Walzer), who was placed in the
Diana-Trial (Gr 2, 1m 2f ) and is herself a
half-sister to multiple Group winner Liang
Kay (Dai Jin). Zarak, a Group 1-winning son
of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) and Zarkava
(Zamindar), stands at the Aga Khan Stud’s
Haras de Bonneval in France where his fee
this year was €12,000 (approx. AU$18,700).
Ten for Havana Gold Havana Gold sired his tenth individual stakes
winner when his daughter Havana Red (4 f ex
Rinskia by Bering) won the Stockholm Fillies
and Mares Stakes (Listed, 2100m) at Bro Park
yesterday for trainer Lennart Reuterskiöld.
Ridden by Jacob Johansen, the four-year-old
travelled well into the straight and soon took
the lead, skipping clear to comfortably score by
two lengths from Blue Gem (Barocci) in second
with Natasha Romanova (Cable Bay) a further
half-length back in third. Havana Gold stood
at Tweenhills Stud in 2021 for a fee of £7,500
(approx. AU$13,900).

freedom from lockdown, with a stunning
victory in The Everest (1200m).
Soon after all the hype and excitement was
over, the coverage then took us south for the
running of the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400).
It was a typically bleak Melbourne day and
there was barely a person in sight around the
racecourse due to Covid restrictions.
It looked like doomsville and my heart went
from bursting with joy after all the great theatre
we had just witnessed in the harbour city to
feeling heavy.
left floundering in the wake of it all.
It made me sad and I wondered if the
The Jo Mckinnon Column
JO MCKINNON
Everest had gazumped the Melbourne Racing
Club’s signature race for once and for all?
A non-racing person, with no idea about
industry politics, happened to be sitting
alongside me watching the broadcast and
suddenly piped up and said: “Why do they have
these two races on the same day? It doesn’t
seem to make any sense.”
I had a little giggle to myself, and, preferring
not to enter into the contentious debate, I kept my
eyes glued to the screen with the time-honoured
Caulfield Cup now already several furlongs in.
As the horses wheeled around the home
turn my heart began to soar again. Incentivise
(Shamus Award), the freakish bay from the
Darling Downs, was full of steam.
As he started to surge clear 400 metres from
home, a plain, dark brown gelding launched
out of the labouring pack behind him.
Nonconformist (Rebel Raider), a cheap
homebred, owned by mother and daughter
Denise and Danielle Henwood, was trying
desperately to catch Australian racing’s latest
star but he failed.
on Saturday and to run second to a superstar is
amazing.
we would be where we were on Saturday,” said
Danielle Henwood.
Caulfield’s quiet did not diminish its loud tradition

everything. It’s the journey. Not only did she
breed the horse, she also strapped him on
Saturday.
“It’s hard to put into words the feeling you
get. It’s overwhelming and you are proud of
how far the horse has come,” she continued.
“The feelings are of complete emotion and
they are memories I will cherish for a lifetime.
Moments like Saturday you cannot buy.”
Big bucks and a diamond-encrusted
trophy might have been won in Sydney, but
in Melbourne, the meaning of tradition in
our sport held plenty of weight for Henwood,
whose authenticity and humbleness in defeat
are both relatable and inspiring.
Iconic and long-standing black type
handicap races like the Caulfield Cup provide
the platform for these types of stories that are
good for racing and prove that from humble
beginnings you can make it all the way to the
"majors" and give them a run for their money.
There is no doubt that a brilliant, new-age
concept like The Everest is building its own
unique place in Australian racing tradition but
there’s a way to go before running second in
that race holds quite the same level of meaning
as it does in finishing the runner-up in a race
like the Caulfield Cup.

ground under Zac Purton before unleashing
a withering surge before fending off Super
Wealthy (Epaulette) and Stronger (Not A Single
Doubt) to score by a neck.
Clocking 1m 07.95s in blustery conditions,
Lucky Patch continued his remarkable
consistency – he now has four wins and six
minor placings from 14 Hong Kong starts after
winning his only two assignments in Australia
as Paleontologist – to earn a tilt at Hong Kong’s
most prestigious sprint in December.
Lui said Lucky Patch’s performance
trajectory had always been positive – and was
unsurprised by Group 2 success.
“I'm not surprised because last season
all the time he had bad draws but he finished
close and the race he won he had a good draw
he won by two and a quarter lengths. He's been
improving,” he said.

couldn’t see myself getting in anywhere but we
rode to try and get in somewhere. If the cards
fell our way, we would be lucky,” he said.
“To be honest, we were caught wide with no
cover for the most part of it. It took me a long
time to be able to get in and get a little bit of
cover and then he travelled into it strongly and
let down nicely.
“When he got to the front, he idled a little
bit – so you can take nothing away from that
performance.”

Purton plotted an uninterrupted passage down

in pretty good shape going into the race so he
should come out of it ok. He was held up in the
straight, so I think he's got an excuse and I don't
think there's any damage,” said trainer John
Size of Courier Wonder’s run in defeat.
But Purton is yet to commit to partnering
Lucky Patch in December.
“We’ll see. We’ll let the dust settle. If I ride him
in the sprint, hopefully he’s good enough to win
it,” said the four-time champion jockey, who also
prevailed in the second section of the Class 4 H.
Moser & CIE. Excellent Handicap (1200m) aboard
Gracylove (Shooting To Win) for David Hall.
Lucky Patch’s victory presented Lui with
a double after the earlier success of Cheerful
Days (Smart Missile) in the Class 4 IWC
Schaffhausen Excellent Handicap (1400m),
"The horse has improved. He's totally
different from last season - he's much more
relaxed now.
"This race suited him because of the good
pace. The draw was just okay but he got a good
ride and it worked out,” Lui said.
Vincent Ho celebrated an important
benchmark atop Seasons Bliss (Charm Spirit)
in the first section of the Class 4 Grand Seiko
Excellent Handicap (1200m), notching with his
400th Hong Kong winner.
"It's been a while, right? This season has
been very slow. I've just got to keep this up now,
get on some good rides and do better than last
season,” Ho said, who combined with trainer
Jimmy Ting.
season “was very disappointing so I let him rest
and early this season his form was not coming
along so well, so he needed more time.
“After I tried blinkers, his form became
better so that's why I put the blinkers on this
time. I think he will still improve, he's not in top
form and he will improve much more after this
race.
“I didn't know it was his (Ho’s) 400th, but I
hope he can win more because he is a very good
jockey.”

of how he would handle 1600 metres, but he’s
been trialling really well and his work has
been absolutely fantastic - I’ve been saying
this season he’s been a different horse,” the
Mauritian said.
“He’s mentally and physically a different
horse. Last season, I won on him and I felt like
he was a big, galloping horse who did not know
much – but had ability. This season, I can feel
that mentally he’s there and physically he’s
starting to get better and use himself better.
“This horse is really improving all the
time and we went into today’s race with
confidence. We wanted to win this race and
halfway through we got crowded and he
started to travel a bit.
“When I got three-deep, he dropped the bit

“It was a great ride. I've had most of the top
jockeys jumping on and off him in a way that
was a little bit unfortunate early on because I

“He’s a nice horse. I think he can handle Class

Class 2 1600 (metres), he is okay,” Ting said.
Purton, who now leads the jockeys’

Analysis: Returning from a rare below par effort in the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m), TAVI MAC bounced back to the form we know for a clear-cut win here, his 12th in 19 starts including three stakes. He was a little tardy to begin with and settled second last of the seven runners and remained there leaving the back straight. At the 600m he made ground three wide and rounding into the straight sat fourth but ready to pounce. At the top of the straight he shared second four deep then took over soon after. At the 100m he was in control and at the post was a comfortable length clear. Packing Rockstar sat fourth, one out, past the 600m, up to third, three out rounding into the straight and shared second at the top of the straight. He challenged at the 200m but had no answer when the winner went by and had to settle for second. Mascarpone was fifth (rails) at the 600m, got out starting the run home but then last he finished quite well for third. From last at the 600m, Sheezallmine finished well for fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: Listed-placed at Tauranga in June, SWEET CLEMENTINE made it back-to-back wins and bagged her maiden stakes win and fifth career win at start 24. She was third (rails) with a lap to run and fourth starting the back straight. Approaching the 600m she was pocketed but still fourth, found a lane one off the fence soon after but began the run home behind a wall of five runners. She balanced and got going from the 200m, threaded between runners inside the 100m then dived through late to get up by a short head. Beaudz Well sat third last down the back, went three wide from the 600m and swept around them even wider rounding into the straight. He was one five across the track at the 300m, took over inside the 200m and shared the lead two strides off the post but was nutted on the line. River Run was a clear last at the 600m, had two behind him into the straight then flew down the outer for a very close third. Pep Torque was one of five across the track at the 300m, led briefly but was swamped the last 50m. [LJ]
