Both Sides of the Fence: Winter Event

The Ag & HES Alumni Association has the opportunity to highlight Kentucky, the University of Kentucky, and the College of Agriculture as the host of the 2012 National Agriculture Alumni and Development Association Annual Conference (NAADA), June 17 – 20, 2012. The theme of the event is “Make Your Mark” and we expect 150 participants representing 40 institutions and organizations. For me, attending NAADA conferences has provided the opportunity to learn how to become a more effective volunteer for the UK Ag & HES Alumni Association.

Please accept this invitation to jump on board the Ag & HES Alumni train and join me at one of the chapter events this summer. I was able to attend all 14 area meetings in 2011 and plan to do the same in 2012. I look forward to seeing you at the one of the 14 Ag & HES Alumni stops around the state in the 2012.

Two years ago I remember the excitement that came over me when I attended Winter Event as an

incoming freshman. Winter Event is a fun filled weekend for incoming freshman to learn about the College

of Agriculture. It is also a time for alumni to get together and witness what is currently going on at their

alma mater. There are different activities throughout the weekend where the prospective students have

the opportunity to interact with current students and alumni from the College of Agriculture. Students and

alumni who attend winter event even get the opportunity to attend a basketball game!

When I decided to attend Winter Event, I was excited to see what UK and especially the College of

Agriculture had in store for me. Even though I was a nervous wreck because all of a sudden it was

becoming a reality that in a few short months I would be leaving home and starting the next chapter of my

life at UK. My major is agriculture education and at Winter Event I enjoyed being able to talk to a professor

a little more about the major. I felt like I had a better understanding of what was expected of me come

August. I enjoyed Winter Event and I specifically remember the ambassadors being really helpful and

answering any questions that were asked of them.

This year I had the opportunity to be on the other side of the fence. I was one of the ambassadors selected to help work Winter

Event. It was now my turn to be one of those ambassadors answering everyone’s questions. As I watched the incoming

freshman walk in I quickly noticed they had the same look on their faces as I did two years ago. It made me really excited to be

an ambassador and have the opportunity to make their experience a great one.

Not only is winter event an event for incoming freshman it is also a reunion for Ag and HES Alumni. My parents and

grandparents are all alumni of the College of Agriculture and they look forward to Winter Event every year. They enjoy getting

to reminisce with other alumni from the college. I enjoy seeing everyone interact. It is both fun and interesting for me to hear

stories from the alumni about what life was like when they were students in the College of Agriculture. It makes me proud to be

a UK student and excited to one day be an alumnus of this wonderful “family” of Ag students!

At the Green River Area Meeting last summer our speaker, Dr. Jimmy Henning, who attended many of our area chapter meetings, quoted Will Rogers “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there”. This quote gives me reason to reflect on our accomplishments of 2011 and to look forward to 2012 and how the Ag & HES Alumni train is barreling down the tracks. As President it has a been a pleasure working with staff and Board members to increase awareness of the UK College of Agriculture and provide opportunities for networking, fellowship, scholarship and student recruitment. More importantly, staying connected with alumni and friends of the Association has been most rewarding.

The 2012 Ag & HES Alumni Express has left the station with stops scheduled all across the state. The Office for Advancement has made it a personal challenge, working with administration, co-workers, alumni and our extension network to increase alumni participation in our activities and events. All 14 Area Events have been planned and the dates are included in this issue of PawPrints.

Roy Vawter Catlett, retired agriculture extension agent for than 30 years in Shelby County, passed away on January 27, 2012 at the age of 73. He was a retired U.S. Army veteran and earned a degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky. Farmer Doug Langley, who also called Catlett a friend, said he thinks people in the community will remember him best for his efforts to help the farmers in any way he could. “Roy dedicated his whole career to agriculture in Shelby County,” said Langley. “In my eyes, he was as great a help to agriculture in Shelby county and as good a friend to Shelby County famers as anybody’s ever been. He never had a problem helping anybody.” He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Peggy and a son, Edward Catlett, a daughter, Nancy Smith and three grandsons, Scott, Andrew and Adam.

The UK College of Agriculture Ambassadors recently traveled to Orlando, Florida for the 2012 Ambassador Leadership Summit. Ag Ambassadors representing universities from across the country attended the conference.

Not only did they participate in sessions on leadership but saw the many sites of Orlando. They toured an orchid farm, The University of Florida’s Research Center, and the Orlando Brewing Company. The Leadership Summit culminated with a trip to Walt Disney World where the students completed the Disney YES leadership training series, then had the day to enjoy the park.

While at Disney, the ambassadors met with Bill Vaughn, Program Support Manager for Walt Disney World. Vaughn, a 1982 UK College of Agriculture graduate with a Landscape Architecture major, spoke to the group about internship opportunities at Disney.
