CURRENT  RESEARCH     (these are only the projects that I have invested considerable effort in designing the research program and obtaining

funding.  The DGC‐Cosmogenic Nuclide Lab typically has more than 15 ongoing projects, all of which are collaborative, but most of which my contribution is the geochronology and geomorphology).

Pliocene‐Quaternary Transition  —Pliocene Arctic as an analogy to a future warmer Arctic.  The Beaufort Formation and its northern and eastern equivalent host a

wide range of paleoenvironmental records of a time when the Arctic was much warmer than today.  Burial/isochron dating with cosmogenic nuclides will provide the badly needed chronology, and help test hypotheses regarding the evolution of the Neogene Arctic, and causes for the widespread deposition and incision of the Beaufort Fm.  Collaborating with N. Rybczynski, (Can. Mus. Nature).  NSERC Discovery, NSERC‐Northern Supplement, Polar Continental Shelf Support 2008‐2012

—Were there sediment flux changes at the Pliocene‐Quaternary Transition?  Was it glaciation and higher amplitude climate changes (e.g. Molnar, Raymo, et al.)  Was it that the Pliocene was much warmer and therefore could generate more sediment from regolith (e.g. Syvitski)?  Cosmogenic nuclide estimates of sediment yield of non‐glaciated catchments in Texas and the Yukon are being measured in fluvial sediment deposited during glacial and interglacial times over the past 4 Ma.  A. Hidy PhD project; Collaborating with D. Froese (U.Alberta), M. Gibling (Dal), M. Blum (ExxonMobil). NSERC‐Discovery, PetroCan YIA, and pending applications to CAMIRO and NSERC‐CRD

                                                                                                                               Active Tectonics

 — Post‐Miocene landscape evolution of southern Andes, 28o‐41oS, using geomorphology, (U‐Th)/He thermochronology, and  fluvial

incision rates calculated from river reaches perpendicular to strike of major fold and thrust belts, with structural geology and soils by collaborators, to investigate the history of landscape evolution in the region of the flat‐slab steep‐slab transition, shortening rates across the orogen in the past few Ma.  M.Sc. research of Sophie Baker, 2002‐2003; Ph.D.

J. C. Gosse-Vita 5

Research of Jose Luis Antinao 2004‐2008; collaborating with E. McDonald (DRI), D. Stockli (KU), M. Taylor (KU), R. Charrier (Ud. Chile) et al). NSERC‐Discovery.  Pending NSF proposal.

— Application of cosmogenic isotopes and soils stratigraphy for alluvial fan chronology and regional correlation in the eastern California shear zone, with implications for regional Quaternary tectonics and climate in the Providence Mountains, along Garlock Fault, Paniment Valley, and along faults throughout the Mina Deflection‐Walker Lane Belt, with collaborators E. MacDonald (DRI), M. Taylor (KU), E. Kirby (Penn St), D. Walker(KU), J. Lee (C Wash U), D. Stockli (KU). NSF, Earthscope to Walker, NSERC‐Discovery.

— Application of cosmogenic isotopes and radiocarbon to establish chronology of strain markers in Tibet and the central High Himalaya, to evaluate (i) the variability of Holocene slip rate over the length of the Altyn Tagh fault (collaborators R. Gold, E. Cowgill, and R. Arrowsmith), (ii) the partitioning of strain throughout Tibet (back thrusts in eastern Tibet, shallow normal faults throughout Tibet, and kinematics and rates of a newly discovered active fault dextral fault system through western Nepal, which appears to be an extension of the Karakoram fault. NSERC, and an NSF grants to Taylor, Cowgill, and Murphy.

                                                                                                                              Glacial Dynamics

— Glacial geochronology for improving understanding of glacial dynamics, providing constraints for numerical ice sheet models, testing ideas of ice volume response to climate change, in alpine regions of western US, in Arctic Canada, and eastern Canada, including contributions to the ACID (Atlantic Canada paleo‐Ice Dynamics) project.  In addition, the cosmogenic nuclide lab is involved in many collaborative glacial chronology projects throughout the world.  Numerous collaborators.  Various funding sources.

— Glacial dynamics, ice sheet modeling, till production, ice stream dynamics in eastern Baffin Island.  This work, focused in 2009 and 2011 on Cumberland Peninsula, is the basis of Ph.D. student A. Margreth research, and will make use of multiple isotopes (14C, 10Be, 26Al) and isotopic ratios in till, bedrock, and erratics to learn about the distribution and temporal variability of frozen (dry, cold) and wet (warm) basal thermal regimes under polythermal ice caps and ice sheets.  Funded by the GSC‐Ottawa and by PCSP, and NSERC (Discovery and MRS) .  Collaborators: A. Dyke; T. Trembley; M. Ross (the latter with a NSERC CRD proposal).

— Thermochronology of the Eastern Canadian Arcitc Rim, using apatite and zircon He dating (by students and Gosse), supplemented with apatite fission track (by collaborators) and numerical modeling (HeFTy and Pecube by students).  Field areas are Torngat Mountains on Ungava Peninsula, Resolution Island, various locations in Baffin Island, and Devon Island.
