From the Atlantic seaboard to the west coast, from the Peace Rivercountry in Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, and in all parts of the worldwhere standard tread tractors are used, it is the universal opinion of themany thousands of owners that the John Deere Model "D" Tractor is theleader in all the qualities that mean greater farm profit. Plowing, disking, drilling, planting, combining, and threshingin all kinds of farm workthese men have found the way to save time, get their work done whenconditions are right, and do it at rock-bottom cost.

There are a great many reasons why the John Deere Model "D" is firstin the qualities you want most.FIRST IN SIMPLICITY

Only John Deere tractors give you the simplicity of exclusive two-cylinder engine design . . . fewer parts . . . a straight-line transmissionwithout power-consuming bevel gears ... a belt pulley right on the crank-shaft, the simplest construction possible.

in all the QUALITIESthat mean GREATER Farm Profit

FIRST IN DEPENDABILITYOnly John Deere two-cylinder tractors giveyou the dependability of fewer and sturdier

parts ... greater ability to stand up under heavyloads . . . proper distribution of weight forbetter, more positive traction.

FIRST IN ECONOMYOnly John Deere two-cylinder tractors are

backed by a long-time record of success, efficien-cy and safety in burning the low-cost fuels such asdistillate, furnace oil, fuel oil, stove tops, TurnerValley naphtha, and some grades of Diesel oil... fuels that cost far less and are approximately10%more powerful. . . fuels that the John Deereconverts into steady, dependable power ondrawbar and belt. Burning the low-cost, money-saving fuels in a John Deere tractor is no ex-periment.

But fuel economy is not all. John DeereModel "D" owners also benefit from anothergreat economy ... the ability to inspect and ad-just their tractors right on the farm. The sim-plicity of two-cylinder design makes possiblecomplete accessibility, one of the big reasons

why a recent survey shows that 82% of Joh n Deereowners do fully 75% of their own service work.

EXTRA-LONG LIFETo the other great features listed, add the

extra years of service that the John Deere Model"D" gives, to better understand the big swing toJohn Deere two-cylinder power. Fewer, heavier,longer-lived parts . . . the use of high-qualitymaterials, careful workmanship, and rigid in-spection ... make records of 8, 10, and even 12or more years of service not at all unusual.

Low-pressure rubber tires are availablefor the John Deere Model "D" Tractorwhen specified.

SIMPLE TwtC&de4_There are many reasons why John Deere

builds only simple, two-cylinder tractors. The simpler a tractor can be made, the lesschance there is for trouble and costly fielddelays. The fewer parts there are, the strong-er and more rugged each part can be. Andhand in hand with strength and ruggednessgoes longer life, more profit from your tractorinvestment because of extra years of service.

The John Deere Model "D" not only givesyou as much, or more, power than other trac-tors of similar size and weight, but, in addi-tion, gives you more dependable performance

John Deere doesn't build a two-cylinder tractor just tobe different. Two-cylinder engine design gives youmaximum simplicity, rugged construction for heavy-dutywork, and the ability to burn the low-cost fuels success-fully. You get: outstanding performance. year afteryear, with a John Deere two-cylinder tractor.

    S M O O T H , R E S P O N S IV E P O W E RIn tough going. . . on drawbar and belt work

of all kinds . . . the John Deere Model "D"Tractor delivers a smooth, ample flow of power.Great weight and perfect balance of rotatingparts, coupled with a sensitive governor whichcontrols the engine at all speeds, result insmooth, steady operation under heavy, medium, and light loads. Loads are carried through fromone power impulse to another with perfectuniformity.

Two-cylinder engine design also makes pos-sible two other exclusive features that turn moreof the engine power into actual working poweron drawbar and belt. Because the crankshaftof the two-cylinder engine is crosswise to theframe, power flows in a straight line throughthe spur-gear transmission. The total absenceof power-consuming bevel gears assures maxi-mum drawbar power. The belt pulley ismounted directly on the crankshaft and deliversfull engine power to all belt-driven machines.Belt power is transmitted without the use ofgears of any kind, the simplest constructionpossible.

You want a tractor that is always ready towork, that stays on the job year after year withthe least attention and expense, that saves timeand money when you have to get your workdone ahead of bad weather when field delays aremost costly. Greater dependability, longer life, and lower upkeep costs in a John Deere Model"D" Tractor can be traced directly to simple,two-cylinder engine design.

parts and makes it possible to build all otherparts sturdier and more durable. The crank-shaft on the Model "D" is extra heavy. Thereare only two main bearings and two connectingrod bearings ... all extra large. The piston pinsand connecting rods have larger bearing sur-faces to reduce wear and prolong life. Through-out the tractor you'll find strength wherestrength is needed to lengthen life and holdupkeep costs at rock-bottom.

ONE-PIECE TRANSMISSION CASEThe transmission and differential are all

housed in a one-piece, dust-proof, oil-tight case. All holes in the case are drilled at one time as-

You have already seen how exclusive two-cylinder engine design eliminates hundreds of

BURNS LOWm COST FUELSFuel is, always has been, and probably alwayswill be the biggest expense item in tractor oper-

ation. John Deere engineers recognized thisfact many years ago when they designed thefirst Model "D" Tractor to successfully andsafely burn the low-cost fuels. They built anengine of two-cylinder design, because only thistype of engine enabled them to carry throughtheir planned fuel economy program.

SHORT, HOT MANIFOLDTwo-cylinder engine design makes possible

The manifold on the Model "D"a short, properlyis short and properly heated, andheated manifoldthe carburetor is located equi-distant fromeachcylinder, as-with both cylinderssuring complete fuel combustion equidistant fromand greater economy,

the carburetor. The gasified fuel travels only afew inches, each cylinder receives the samecharge, the explosion takes place immediately. There is no chance to reliquefy. There are nodevices, no dampers in the manifold becausenone are necessary. The Model "D" burns thelow-cost fuels successfully, as well as gasolineor kerosene.

    SLOWER SPEED ENGINESecondly, a relatively slow-speed, two-cylinder

engine allows more time for the complete com-bustion of the heavier, slower-burning fuels. The combination of short, hot manifold withthe gasified fuel traveling the same distance toeach cylinder, and slower engine speed, are twobig reasons why there is no harmful oil dilutionin a John Deere Model "D" Tractor, resultingin far longer life of all engine parts. Burningdistillate, furnace oil, fuel oil, stove tops, TurnerValley naphtha, some grades of Diesel oil, andother money-saving fuels is nothing new toJohn Deere owners. They've been doing itseason after season.

    THERMO-SIPHON TEMPERATURECONTROL

John Deere engineers also provide for ade-quate and positive temperature control. Nomatter whether it is a hundred in the shade, orbelow zero, you can always keep a John Deereengine at the proper temperature for completefuel combustion, maximum power, and greatestfuel economy.

The John Deere thermo-siphon system ofcooling quickly and automatically warms theengine to its proper operating temperature. The

Arrowsindicate direction ofwater flow.

Swater does not start circulating until the engine is hot enough toburn the fuel efficiently, then water circulation begins and con-tinues, automatically, always supplying the cooled water to thehottest engine parts where cooling is most needed. Theres nopump to leak, wear, or cause trouble. The fan is gear- and shaft-driven, no belts.

From the tractor seat, the Model "D" operator can not onlywatch the temperature gauge, but by means of handy control lever, open or close the radiator shutter to maintain proper enginetemperature under varying conditions.

NATURAL-DRAFT CARBURETIONEfficiency and economy are also aided materially by theJohnDeerenatural-draft fuel induction system. The fuel is drawn downwardfrom the carburetor, through the short, properly heated manifold, into the combustion chambers. This design aids combustion,

permits development of maximum power, and assures uniform fueleconomy at all engine speeds.fi

    POSITIVE LUBRICATION

This illustration shows the engine lubri-cation system. Note how the oil is forcedunder pressure by a pump through the oilfilterhow the thoroughly filtered oil isthen forced to main bearings, throughdrilled leads to connecting rod bearings, and through drilled connecting rods topiston pins. The overflow of oil, which isforced out around the bearings, is caughtby the revolving crankshaft and thrown tocylinder walls, cam shaft, and all other partsin the crankcase, bathing them in oil. Adirect oil line from the force-feed oil pumpassures positive lubrication of the governor. An oil line leading to the tappet case coverlubricates valve stems, rocker arms, andtappets.

There is no more positive system of lubrica-tion than the full-pressure, force-feed systemused in the John Deere Model "D" Tractor. Oilis forced under pressure to main bearings, con-necting rod bearings, piston pins and governor. An oil line conducts oil to the valve stems, rocker arms, and tappets. Overflow oil is thrownover all other engine parts by the crankshaft.

Transmission gears, revolving in a constantbath of oil, are automatically lubricated. Pres-

sure grease-gun fittings make short work ofgreasing the few places where it is necessary tolubricate by hand.

DIRT AND DUST EXCLUDEDAdequate safeguards for keeping out dust and

dirt are also provided. All parts are housed in adust-proof, oil-tight case and high-quality oilseals are used. The oil wash-down air cleanerremoves all dust and grit from the air that is

OTHER `SAFEGUARDSdrawn into the engine. The air travels through the oil in thebase of the cleaner, causing the oil to rise as a mist, thoroughlysaturating the dust and dirt. The air and dust-laden oil aredrawn part way into the closely crimped wire screens in the bodyof the cleaner unit where the dirty oil is arrested. Only clean airreaches the engine. The John Deere oil wash-down air cleaneris quickly and easily serviced.

Fuel is twice-filtered. The John Deere crankcase breatherand ventilator (described below) removes injurious gases andvapors before they can condense and form oil sludge, andhelps the oil to retain its lubricating qualities regardless of thekind of fuel being used. An additional safeguard is the improved, easily serviced, life-time oil filter which thoroughly cleans the oil.

    CRANKCASE VENTILATION

    ,j ii

:! INotice, in the illustration below the com-plete provision that has been made for venti-lating the crankcase of John Deere tractors.Air is drawn into the breather pipe (1); throughthe oil-soaked moss filter core (2) where it iscleaned. The clean air circulates through thecrankcase 13); forcing objectionable gases andvapors to rise to the highest point in thecrankcase BEFORE they can condense and

form sludge. A pipe (4) connects with the in-take system. The gases are drawn throughthis pipe into the combustion chambers of theengine (5), where they are burned up andcarried out through the exhaust (6). The onlyattention this ventilating system requires isthe servicing of the filter core, a simple, easymatter.
