Dear Friends in Christ,

Peace and Joy to you and your loved ones!

I am writing this letter on the Feast of St. Joseph, which closely follows that of St. Patrick’s. St. Patrick is credited for driving the snakes out of Ireland and everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, except for the Italians, or so I heard. I was wondering why St. Joseph is associated with Italians, though.

So, I did what most of us can easily do in research and trivia, I googled it. It turns out that St. Joseph is regarded by Italians as their Patron Saint because in Sicily, at one point, our Saint of Silence’s intercession prevented a famine during the Middle Ages. According to the story, there was a severe drought at the time, and the people prayed for their patron saint to bring them rain. They promised that if God answered their prayers through St. Joseph's intercession, they would prepare a large feast to honor him.

The rain did come, and the people of Sicily prepared a large banquet for their patron saint. The fava bean was the crop, which saved the population from starvation, and became a traditional part of Saint Joseph's Day altars and traditions.

St. Joseph is also the Patron of a Happy Death, because he died in the presence of our Lord, Jesus and our Blessed Mother.

Speaking of death, on MMonday, March 25th, at 7 P.M. in St. Jerome’s Church, I will be giving a short presentation on the FFive Faces of Death. Through the initiative of the Rosary Altar Society, this presentation is open to all. We’ll begin with the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, then, Gospel Reading and Presentation. It will conclude with the Benediction. Stop by, if you have the time. May that hour be one of our Lenten preparations. Lent, among other things, is about death and reparation.

On a separate page in this bulletin, please check the Confession times that are available to us, and in our nearby Churches. I have added tthree additional hours weekly in our two Churches, Please take the time to be reconciled with our Lord, as I shared in last weekend’s bulletin.

Forgiveness is a gift. It is not just forgiving the wrong done to us, or wrong done by us. It is also giving us the grace of being one with our merciful Lord. It is also gifting us with peace and calmness, for any forgiving we have done to those who have offended us.

As the gardener in this weekend’s Gospel considers the barren tree and patiently hopes for a change, so the good Lord watches each one of us, looks into our hearts and awaits the change of attitude and conversion. Jesus is the compassionate gardener, who begs that we not be cut down and trashed. He intercedes for us until the end of time.

Till then. I keep you in my prayers. Please also include me in yours.

Lawn Maintenance Volunteers

Once again, we are planning to take care of the grounds at St. Jerome. Sign up sheets will be at the exits of the Church. In the past, we had enough volunteers, and we were able to schedule everyone only 2-3 mes during the season (April-October). We hope you will join us.

SJC Liturgical Environment Easter 2019

“Flower Assistant” Needed

I have been preparing the sanctuary of SJC for the celebraon of Easter for over 15 years and for most of those years two wonderful women worked with me from start to finish. Unfortunately, they are no longer here to assist. I know I can count on parishioners to volunteer an hour or two. However, I also need someone who is willing to make a firm commitment of at least 4 hours on Holy Saturday -- making SJC their #1 priority – to work with me from start to “joy filled” finish.

If you enjoy working with flowers, have an eye for detail, physically able to li and move poed plants, don't mind kneeling on a very hard floor, and don’t mind working with a perfeconist -- then you are the right person for the job!

It’s a lot of ring work, but the end result is worth it!

I can’t wait unl Holy Week to hear from you!

Christian Humor

“Christianity, by its very nature, is joy. It is the ability to be joyful. By its very essence Christian belief is “glad tidings.” This deep joy of the heart

is the true prerequisite for a sense of humor. So in a very real sense humor is a measure of faith!”

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

Here’s One Positive Encouragement

From your fellow parishioner

Have you ever noticed how we have a way of taking something simple and complicating it only to find ourselves back to where we started with the original simple concept? Let’s use physics as an example. We wondered why apples fall from trees, why the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and how do the moon, planets and stars move through the night skies? We came up with simple answers, gravity and the earth and the planets revolve around the sun. Then we got more complicated. We discovered black holes, energy waves, different particles of matter, quantum physics, only to go back to prove that gravity exists and the earth and planets rotate. Now, lets’ take something simple and again make it complicated. Let’s look at psychology and psychologists. What do psychologists do? Usually they talk to people who are feeling badly about themselves because of their relationships, lack of self-esteem, guilt, inability to resolve inner problems, lack of love, etc. What are the usual results? It was found that the person felt badly about what they did or what was done to them, felt unworthy, guilty or unloved. Really, they just needed true forgiveness and to know that they are loved. Science cannot give them this. Two thousand years ago we had an answer. Jesus gave the apostles the ability to act in his behalf to absolve man’s transgressions. This has continued today through our ordained priests through confession. Unconditional love from the Father is all we really need to live our life in happiness. Avail yourself of the original. Go to CONFESSION often. Tis the season to be FORGIVEN.

THE SEVEN ELEMENTS OF PARISH LIFE

The essence of parish life is formed by seven essenal elements:

Evangelizaon, Worship, Word, Community, Service, Stewardship, and Leadership.

These elements constantly interrelate in parish life, each nurturing and supporng the other, with the communal celebraon of Sunday Eucharist at the center.

COMMUNITY

Community is an essenal element of parish life which draws parishioners together in mutual support, acvity, celebraon and growth. This results when members become involved with one another in other elements. The universal Church is seen to be “a people brought into unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Community is the human dynamic through which the mission of the Church is embodied and embraced.

Descriptors of Community in Parish Life

The following “descriptors” are indicators that point toward concrete ways in which community gets lived out in a parish:

1. The parish recognizes itself as a Chrisan community, rather than social organizaon.

2. Communicaon between parish leaders and parishioners is adequate and consistent.

3. There is a good spirit of working together among parish groups and organizaons.

4. All parish organizaons and acvies are broadly inclusive.

5. Organizaonal acvies are in harmony with parish pastoral plan and respond to the needs of the members, the parish as a whole, the larger community, and the Diocese

. Programming for parish organizaons consistently offers prayer, informaon, educaon, entertainment and hospitality.

7. Efforts are made to provide for special needs of those who might feel excluded: young or elderly, minories, separated/divorced, physically or mentally challenged the homebound.

8. The prayer and acvity of the parish are outwardly directed and not only on its own life.

9. The parish collaborates with neighboring parishes to enhance the mission of the Church.

10. The parish promotes ecumenical relaonships and acvies.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fr. P.J. and the OLOH Pastoral Council would appreciate your feedback. Please check the box next to the number of the descriptor if you see or experience these descriptors of community being “lived out” in our parish. You may drop your feedback (cutout from the bullen for your convenience) in the “ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS” box in the back of church at your convenience. Thank you for your connued support of our parish programs and ministries.
