Superintendent News September 2020

Last month right after the Club Championship, we had to take immediate action and verti-cut the greens. I began noticing the grass beginning to grow over the top of each other. When this happens, the greens will get very grainy. It was a practice I did not enjoy doing this time of the year going into the fall, but It was a process that I felt the need to be done soon to help our putting surfaces. Greens #7, #8, and #17 took the worst beating of them all. I will be interested to see if those three greens do turn out to be the best once they grow back. In the future Summers after the greens scalping, this might be a practice that needs to be implemented once a month. With our greens aging, we will see more these growth habitsEvery September is when we begin to raise the heights throughout the golf course, including the greens, to prepare for the winter. As soon as the cooler temperature set in, you notice a change in the grass where the leaf blades shrink up to mimic that it has been sprayed with a growth regulator. That is when you should see speeds pick back up. This year since college golf has been cancelled and as long as the seed is here, we will seed the driving range tee the Monday after the member guest. It normally takes about 3 weeks for the ryegrass to be ready for golf shots.

Any questions, please stop and ask,Chris Purvis

WOMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION

The WGA was finally able to hold the Step Aside Tournament and the mid-year meeting on August 22 outside on the porch (social distancing, of course). What a lovely setting to discuss the business for WGA and enjoy appetizers and beverages!

Congratulations to the winners of the tournament:

1st place - Barbara Bowers, Nancy Johnson, and Beth Mozley. 2nd place - Cathie Bennett, Vivien Brackett, and Constance Woods.

Please dust off your clubs and join us for the WGA Club Championship on Sept 19 and 20. You must, however, have participated in WGA play days at least 10 times.

Unfortunately, WGA must cancel our beloved Member/Guest Tournament due to concerns with travel of participants and the coronavirus. Instead, we have decided to have a Member/Member Tournament on Oct. 15.

Put your thinking cap on and create a Halloween costume for our golf day on October 29! What a blast we had last year! Prizes awarded for the best costumes so get to work!

Also in October, we have the much anticipated President’s Cup Tournament and Closing Meeting on October 31. Mark your calendars to join us to end the WGA season.

One last day to mark on your calendar to kick off the holiday season is the WGA Christmas party which will be on December 12. More details will be forthcoming.

HAPPY GOLFING!

This issue of the Berkeley Bulletin provides the results of both the Championship (Blue Tees) and Masters (White Tees). Remember, you have the responsibility to protect your fellow members. If we all continue to do our part can we can safely escape from sheltering in place at home and enjoy the game we love at Berkeley.
