Mission Statement We, the people of the Catholic Community of St. Jude, are followers of Christ. Empowered by the Holy Spirit and under the guidance
of our bishop and pastor, we strive to use our diverse skills and unique vision to build the kingdom of God in our hearts and in our world. We strive to live the Gospel and reflect the compassion and love of Jesus to all people.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 20, 2016
We are slowly gaining on reaching our goal of 2.5 million and to date have
collected 1.3 million in pledges. It is important that all of us take ownership in
making this building campaign a success through
pledges as well as through prayer. If you have not
turned in a pledge card, please do so and if you haven’t picked one up,
please get yours after any of the weekend Masses. Together we can build
for the future.
Join us for Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9AM
Greeters Ministry: a way to be more welcoming. We
invite everyone to take part in this
ministry! Whether you are young or older, alone or have a
family with children, come and be a greeter. We will need lots of people for
each of the 3 weekend Masses. We invite you to come to see what is involved - it’s not
difficult. The meetings will take place on Tuesday, November 29 at 9am and again at
6:30pm, after Mass. Only 1 member of your family needs to attend. Let’s make sure that everyone who comes to St. Jude will feel that they look forward to coming back because the people are so warm and
generous. If you have questions email or call Terry Humenik.
Our Giving Tree is one way which the Catholic Community of St. Jude reaches into the community and helps those who are less fortunate have a bright and Merry Christmas.
Our tree is up and ready to go! Parishioners are asked to take an
ornament and return the items listed on it to under the tree before December 18.
Points to remember It is necessary to return the ornament with the gift. As we receive more names and requests, more tags will be added to
the tree for the next couple of weeks. All Gift Cards please return VIA the collection basket! Please do not wrap the gifts, donations of gift wrap, tape and tags
are welcome instead. Thank you so much for your generosity!
Adopt a Child Stocking Project
Donors choose a child’s name and a stocking, purchase gifts for the child, decorate and fill the stocking and return it to the church. Stockings are delivered to the Salvation Army for distribution. Deadline for returning the stockings is Sunday, December 4th.

What do we do now?
That is a line from the movie “The Candidate” starring Robert Redford. He was the son of a well-liked governor father who was pushed into being a candidate for Senator. After struggling at first to find words in his speeches that connected with the people or even wanting to win the election, he found himself winning the election and then, realizing he had no idea of what to do next.
I am finding that many people are in the same boat after this year’s election campaign. Now I’m not saying that people are in a quagmire because Mr. Trump is the newly elected President-candidate. What I am saying is, what do we do now? How do we build a nation ‘great again’ when there is so much division separating us? How do we respect human life, from conception, when there does not appear to be respect for the human life that made it out of the womb?
But I will be honest with you. My candidate did not win—by a long shot. Now that is not an insight into how I may have voted, for it is not, as my candidate wasn’t on the ticket. No, my candidate did not win and the candidate I’m speaking of is our Lord and Savior. For if Christ was fully present within any of our political candidates; then all of us would have been singing the praises of God during this past campaign season and then finding us all, as a ‘whole’ Nation, dancing in the streets with joy over our eventual elected official. As it stands now, we are a divided nation and we need to turn to Christ to seek his guidance on bring us together as One Nation, Under God.
The “Eighth” Deadly Sin
This brings me to a new topic. I am beginning to believe that Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Email, Snapchat, Instagram, and many other social media programs or apps) are and have become the Eighth Deadly Sin. Too many people are hiding behind these apps to voice anger & hate; especially during this past campaign season and certainly afterwards. Some aren’t hiding at all!
Personally I have tried to use social media as a way to connect to family and friends. Now I haven’t been extremely good about everything I have posted in the past, but I have tried not to post anything that divides or slanders another person.
Unfortunately I was finding more and more posts from my “friends’ list that were doing exactly this. Now that is not to say that their posts appear to be unfair or judgmental and done with the intent to harm another person but in reality some of these posts were doing just that. Not all of them were bad in and of itself; but they were when it berated, demeaned, belittled or disrespected another simply because they don’t hold to their political, social or religious point of view.
Needless to say I have taken the unfortunate step and deleted (or in Facebook terms, “unfriended”) anyone & everyone who was not a family member. I needed to do this to get back to why I joined FB to begin with and keep my focus on Jesus’ command to ‘love one another as you love yourself’. I was finding it harder and harder to keep that love of Christ towards others at times; thus I needed to make a change in the way I use my personal social media apps.
I guess what I am trying to say to all of us, when using any social media app, be gentle and humble of heart, use words that bind and mend and not tear apart further what is already broken, be merciful as we pray to ask God to be with us, to stop the hate just because someone is of a different political party, social status, gender or religious ethnicity or racial background.
I think a good guide to follow would be: before posting or even commenting in public on anything and that is, “how would you feel if someone posted or said the same about you?” Finally as my mother and maybe your mother too use to say, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say it at all!”
Our Building Campaign
I would be remiss if I didn’t say that I am concerned that we may not reach our goal to build our addition. Too many people are walking out the doors instead of taking a few seconds to pick up their pledge packets and a majority of those that do have their pledge cards are not returning them.
This is my house, it is your house, it is the house of every registered parishioner and we must all take ‘ownership’ of it and this campaign is a way to say, I, too, have an invested ownership of this house of God. So join me in making a pledge and in praying for the success of this campaign.

The Jesus who is born in time and history is also the Christ who will come in glory to judge all. The season of Advent begins today with a call to perseverance and vigilance, as we prepare, not just to celebrate the historical event of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, but also to celebrate our central belief that Christ will come again in glory to judge all humanity. Our readings are chosen to help us reflect on this great truth and to be prepared for the coming of Christ. Our readings speak to us about eternal life and the fulfillment of the kingdom. Isaiah, 2:1-5, the Old Testament prophet of consolation, describes a pilgrimage to the mountain of the Lord where the faithful will be instructed in his ways. Paul, Romans 13:11-14, calls us to wake up and to throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Our Gospel, Matthew 24:37-44, echoes this, describing the need to be prepared for the unexpected coming of Christ in glory.

The Greeters Ministry is Coming We have been talking about developing a greeters ministry in our parish for several years as a way to be more welcoming not only to people who are new to the parish but to members of our parish community. The ushers at St. Jude have their own duties but greeters will focus on letting people know that we are glad they are here with us to worship God. We invite everyone to take part in this ministry because it is something for everyone to share in as brothers and sisters in Christ. Whether you are young or older, alone or have a family with children, come and be a greeter. We will need lots of people for each weekend with 3 Masses each weekend. We invite you to come to see what is involved - it’s not difficult and we will give you all the information that you need to know. The meetings will take place on Tuesday, November 29 at 9am and again at 6:30pm, after Mass. Only 1 member of each family needs to attend. It is very important that we get this ministry ready and active before the Christmas season so that we can warmly welcome all who are with us during the beautiful season. Let’s make sure that everyone who comes to St. Jude at any time will feel that they look forward to coming back because the people are so warm and generous.

Friendship
Last week, after what seemed like forever without a meeting, Youth Group returned to Sunday night with plenty of delicious food, some new faces, two truths and a lie (wait, is the Youth Minister really an undercover agent for the FBI?), and making new best friends… only to ditch them over the promise of a couple of bucks or a free pizza.
The topic of the night was one that affects us all in some way: friendship. Our relationships shape us into the people we are. They help us discover things about ourselves. They give us support and a place to grow. Relationships give us a sense of belonging. What happens when those relationships crumble? What happens when friendships fall apart? Can trust be rebuilt?
St. Francis DeSales talked about the difference between True Friendship and False Friendship. True Friendship is that which, by a friendship with that person, you also become closer to Christ. How many of our friendships are actually True?

Jerusalem, Our Destiny This weekend, we conclude a liturgical year with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Next weekend, we begin a new year with the First Sunday of Advent. On both weekends, the Lectionary prescribes the same psalm be sung after the first reading: Psalm 122.
Psalm 122 is one of several psalms (along with 46, 48, 76, 84, and 87) categorized by modern scripture scholars as the Songs of Zion. The word Zion is first found in 2 Samuel 5:7, which dates to c. 630-540 B.C. It is a place name often used as a synonym for the city of Jerusalem. It also commonly referred to a specific mountain near Jerusalem (Mount Zion), on which stood a fortress conquered by David.
God chose David as king and promised him an everlasting kingdom. God also chose David’s city; when David brought the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem, it was made the city of God (see 2 Samuel 6). The Songs of Zion celebrate the glory of Jerusalem, city of David, city of God. There God is present with his people. There, as Psalm 122 says, all the tribes of the Lord gather to worship.
The Songs of Zion describe Zion as the highest mountain, the center of the universe. (Indeed, for centuries after Jesus’ death and resurrection, it was common to draw world maps with Jerusalem at the center.) A stream is depicted as flowing from Zion, or from Zion’s temple (Psalm 46, cf. Ezekiel 47). Zion is the place of God’s great and final victory over all the nations, the place where God’s kingdom will be established once and for all (Psalms 46, 48, 76).
Jerusalem is the site of pilgrimage. God’s people are required to celebrate the three great festivals there. This theme is found in the Songs of Zion, and also in a related and overlapping category of psalms, the Songs of Ascent (Psalms 120-134), which are specifically pilgrimage prayers. Jerusalem is also the goal of the final pilgrimage of God’s people. There all people long to be.
The new Jerusalem is our symbol for the kingdom of God (cf. Revelation 21), the place where God will dwell with us forever. The new Jerusalem is where we will find true peace and prosperity, where we will at last be home. These are our hopes as we sing Psalm 122.

Help Needed Getting the Poor to Medical Care
Care A Van provides area senior citizens and the disabled with assisted medical transportation. The service is provided by volunteer drivers and they need more drivers ASAP. Volunteer drivers are provided training, the use of the vans and a paid chauffeurs license. Volunteers choose how much and when they will work. The need is great and is increasing. Won’t you try a day or two per month? Call Gale Capling at 989-668–0617 ext 2. This sounds like a work of mercy and compassion beyond compare. Planning Ahead for Gift Giving and Sharing If you are considering getting a new cell phone soon consider what you will do with the old phone. NEVER throw a cell phone in the trash. There are valuable scarce precious metals in cell phones that can contaminate the earth. Besides we would like to recommend that you put your old cell phone in the donation container in the west air lock at church. Secure-the-Call is an organization that removes any of your information from the phone and then gives it to someone who is in danger of abuse so that they can call 911 when they are in danger. Even broken phones are accepted because they can repair them or use them for parts on another phone. Our parish has already donated at least 4 canisters of phones to keep others safe. Phone and chargers and accessories are accepted.
Pillow Stuffing for Hospitalized Children Last Saturday 12 ladies from St. Jude Prayer Shawl and Quilt Ministry joined with the intercultural community, girl scouts and LCC students to stuff positioning pillows for seriously ill children who are hospitalized. The ladies from St. Jude had already made the pillow covers and the volunteers stuffed them all with new poly-fil to be used by 13 hospitals in Michigan. All of this was done in support of the Olivia Kay Foundation, a little girl from DeWitt who has a terminal genetic disease and children like her who spend lots of time in hospitals. It was an inspiration to see all of the people who had come out to make a difference in the lives of these children and their parents.
Calendar Donations You are invited to bring the extra calendars you receive in the box in the gathering space. They will be given to various shelters: for the homeless, pregnant women, and for the abused etc. They always appreciate your donations.

Each hospital has an application process followed by a general orientation which is provided to every hospital volunteer through their Volunteer Services Department. Once this is completed, a more specific training is provided which focuses on our visits with patients and their families. Time commitment is generally one day per month for 2 to 3 hours at Sparrow or 1 to 1-1/2 hour at McLaren. For further information, please contact Cassian Hardie at 364-2902 or [email protected]. 9
As you can all see, the exterior renovations to the church and community center are almost completed. The contractors are performing quality work and the appearance of the facilities are much improved. The next-to-no maintenance materials used will serve us for years to come and reduce our operating costs throughout those years. Thank you for your contributions to our Building Fund which makes all of this possible. Our capital campaign continues to progress well as far as pledge amounts, but now that many of the pledge packets are distributed the focus is shifting to participation. In order for us to reach our goal it is essential that all of us make some form of contribution to this campaign. Again I remind you that all contributions made from here on out, stay in the parish and allow us to begin our building addition. If you haven’t picked up your pledge packet, please do so. If you have picked up your packet, please pray for God’s wisdom in making a sacrificial gift and continuing the building of God’s Kingdom here at the Catholic Community of St. Jude!

If you know of an individual or family that would benefit from one of our dressers, or if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me (Leslie Feldpausch) at 517-669-9264 or by email [email protected].
