What would you do if you suffered a broken leg tomor-row? Chances are, you would go to an emergency room, see a doctor, have your leg X-rayed and placed in a cast, and then get a set of crutches. You wouldn’t be back to 100 percent right away, but you could at least function.

Now, what would you do if you suffered a mental setback? That answer’s not so clear-cut. Mental injuries don’t present themselves the same way physical injuries do: the nerve re-ceptors that tell you your mind is broken work differently than the receptors that fi re when you break a leg.

Mental injuries and illnesses are just as serious as their physical counterparts. In fact, they claimed more Airmen’s lives last month than physical trauma: 15 active-duty, Guard and Reserve Airmen took their own lives in January, com-pared with three who were killed in combat operations over the same period due to physical injuries.

Gen. Norton Schwartz, Air Force chief of staff, in calling for all Air Force units to take a one-day stand-down from normal operations, wrote, “Our Airmen are too important to lose in this manner, and the costs to individuals, families, friends, co-workers and our mission are beyond measure.”

During the Air Force Academy’s stand-down Jan. 26, Chief Master Sgt. Todd Salzman, Air Force Academy command chief, said he had sought help from mental health profession-als, but he had to overcome the stigma that “command chiefs don’t need help.” Someone in my offi ce said he also had to seek help after realizing he was dealing with his stress in all the wrong ways.

Now, a one-day stand-down is not going to solve anything in and of itself. A one-day event is not magically going to make everyone in the unit resilient. Whatever baggage we carried on Jan. 25 probably came with us into Jan. 27.

But the purpose of the stand-down was never to “fi x” any-one – it was to get people talking about the problem.

Lt. Gen. Mike Gould, Air Force Academy superintendent, said during the stand-down here, “Seeking help is a strength, not a weakness.”

It’s hard to talk about human frailty. It’s hard to seek help because of the prevailing cultural attitude that there’s “some-thing wrong” with someone who’s mentally ill or that it’s “all in his head.” In the fi rst case, nothing could be further from the truth, any more than there’s “something wrong” with someone who has multiple sclerosis or breast cancer. In the second case, of course mental illness or injury is all in a per-son’s head, but that doesn't make it less real.

As someone who’s been diagnosed with depression, I can talk a bit about what it feels like.

Imagine that things are going really well at work and at home – all the bills are paid, you have money to spare, you have a family that loves you and with whom you get to spend a good amount of quality time. Despite all of that, you can’t shake the feeling that you don’t deserve it or that things aren’t good enough or that they’re about to take a sharp turn for the worse.

You feel ashamed because, you tell yourself, you should feel

good about everything that’s going right. Worse, you may end up subconsciously sabotaging yourself: doing something you know will create trouble in your work life or picking an argu-ment at home about something stupid.

My depression is mild. Through medication and talking to friends on a regular basis, I can keep a handle on it. It’s taken years to get to the point where I felt comfortable talking about it.

But talking about depression – whether with friends or trained counselors – has probably saved my life. My friend’s daughter nearly died because she didn’t talk about hers sooner. It was only through luck, or perhaps providence, that the young woman is still alive – my friend walked in on her daughter as she was trying to hang herself.

It took my friend almost two weeks to get to the point where she felt comfortable talking about it. On the “Rock-n-Roll Buddha” blog Jan. 23, she wrote:

“... Every fi ght with her brother, every stressful school project, every disagreement with her dad, every single anxiety, every argument with me, every pressure she placed upon herself, everything ... has been tucked away and buried so no one could see. On Jan. 11, after a small argument, it simply became too much to contain, and her little emotional soul could take no more.”

You should read the entirety of my friend’s blog post. You’ll fi nd it here: “This is a very diffi cult blog to post.” Take a look at the signs of depression, which have a lot in common with post-traumatic stress disorder and com-bat stress. Take a look at what you can do to build your personal resilience and to manage depression if you think you might be dealing with it yourself.

And most importantly, if you’re in a dark place, talk to someone about it. Don’t let it kill you. It doesn’t matter who you are – you’re too important to lose.

Base air traffic controllers direct most flights in AF

The 433rd Airlift Wing at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland plans to add sev-eral C-5M aircraft to its fleet in 2016 while beginning to retire 16 C-5A air-craft in 2013. In addition, proposed future plans include closing the C-5A training school.

Pentagon officials announced the force structure changes Feb. 3 as part of a larger plan called the “Air Force Strat-egy and Force Structure Overview.”

“The Air Force is posturing for the future in a way that maintains our abil-ity to be agile, flexible and ready to en-gage a full range of contingencies and threats,” Lt. Col. Adam Willis, 433rd Operations Group commander, said. “In that regard, the Air Force plans to retire 27 C-5As, 16 of those from the Alamo Wing, over the next few years.”

The Air Force cited eliminating the C-5A model will avert high sustainment costs for an aircraft with less reliability than the C-5M. To complete the tran-

sition, the Air Force plans to transfer eight C-5Ms from Westover, Mass., to the 433rd Airlift Wing in 2016.

These changes come as part of the Air Force’s larger plans in support of the new defense strategy.

“We’re going to do everything we can to take care of our people as these changes occur,” Lt. Gen. Charles E. Stenner Jr., chief of Air Force Reserve at the Pentagon, said. “DoD’s goal is to balance force structure reductions with our ability to project power globally and to maintain our force readiness.”

According to Air Force officials, the Air Force is refocusing its capabilities to comply with President Obama's new defense strategy and proposed budget cuts scheduled to be released later this month.

In order for the planned changes to take effect, they must be approved by Congress and signed into law by the president.

433rd AW to get C-5M, retire some C-5A aircraft

The 12th Operations Support Squadron air traffic controllers worked 225,143 operations last fiscal year – 84,000 more than the next busi-est Air Force-operated air traffic control tower facility.

An operation is defined as “anything that crosses the landing threshold or flies through our air space,” Gary Thompson, 12th OSS air traffic manager, said. “It could be a takeoff, a landing, a low approach, a touch and go or another type of maneuver.”

What makes this number even more impres-sive is that Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph’s airfield, in comparison to others, is open only 12 hours a day, five days a week.

“Many Air Force airfields are open at least 16 hours per day, and for more than just five days a week because of their mission requirements,” Sara Rodriguez, 12th OSS airfield operations flight commander, said.

In addition to supporting 12th Flying Training

Wing operations, the 12th OSS air traffic control-lers support all flying operations in and out of JB-SA-Randolph’s airfield including joint operational support airlift, wounded warrior transports, fall-en Soldier flights and local safety services such as medical evacuation flights among other types of air traffic, Rodriguez said.

JBSA-Randolph is also the only Air Force base where tower controllers conduct radar monitor-ing of two instrument landing systems, which al-lows flights to operate in closer proximity than they normally would, according to Thompson.

The 21 air traffic controllers assigned to the 12th OSS are all certified by the Federal Aviation Administration and average 25 years of experi-ence each.

“The controllers’ experience and true profes-sionalism are what ensure a safe and efficient flying environment at the busiest tower complex in the Air Force,” Lt. Col. Dale Hetke, 12th OSS commander, said. “Their dedication is a great re-flection of the outstanding Airmen working in the 12th OSS – supporting ‘The Source of America’s Airpower!’”

Their presence out-side military bases has become all too familiar: businesses peddling cars, elec-tronics and other items with undis-closed conditions or sky-high interest rates that quickly become a fi nancial nightmare for service members.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced Feb. 3, as one of its fi rst orders of business, that it is partnering with the Federal Trade Commission to put a stop to such scams.

The bureau, which was created to consolidate fi nancial regulators and protect consumers, has created a national database to share between state and federal law enforcement information about com-panies that target military members for consumer and fi nancial fraud.

Richard Cordray, the former Ohio attorney general whom President Barack Obama appointed as director of the bureau earlier this month, said coordination among law enforcement agencies – and their input – is critical to prosecuting scam artists who prey on service mem-bers and their families.

The database – dubbed ROAM for Repeat Offenders Against the Military – is accessible only to law enforce-ment, and is an extension of the FTC’s Military Senti-nel Network, a public website where people can report scams against service members, Cordray said.

New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman came up with the idea for the database after fi ling a

lawsuit in 2010 against Rome Finance Co. of Con-cord, Calif., for defrauding nearly a thousand sol-diers at Fort Drum, N.Y., as well as service mem-bers in at least fi ve other states. The company agreed to repay $3.5 million to the Fort Drum soldiers and restore their consumer credit rat-ings in a legal agreement reached in August.

Schneiderman called the case “one of the most egregious things I’ve seen in my time”

in which the company’s retailer, SmartBuy, sold laptop computers at highly infl ated prices

to service members. Under the scam, he said, service members were forced to use the company’s fi nancing plan, which was paid directly from their military paychecks with interest rates that eventu-ally hit 19 percent. Some Soldiers ended up paying more than $7,000 for a computer worth no more than $2,000, he said.

The Fort Drum Soldiers were particularly vulnerable, Schneiderman said, because the base was “an extremely active jumping-off point” for deployments to Iraq, with Soldiers busy and distracted by their jobs and re-locations.

Few are more familiar with the situation than Holly Petraeus, the bureau’s assistant director of service member affairs and

wife of retired Army Gen. David H. Petra-eus, Central Intelligence Agency director and former commander of U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“As someone who has lived in military communities my entire life, I’ve seen fi rsthand how some companies prey on military members,” Petraeus said. “I continue to hear stories of service members being ripped off by businesses who see them as easy targets to a quick

profi t,” she said, adding that some compare the preda-tory nature of sales people who set up outside military bases to bears at a trout stream.

Service members are a favorite prey, she said, because “they have a guaranteed paycheck, and they’re not going to quit or get laid off.” And, she added, a military base is sometimes the largest em-ployer in the area.

Too often, Petraeus said, when a business is shut down at a base in one state, it simply moves to another military town – something the national database is de-signed to prevent.

Among the latest scams, Petraeus said, is one in which people claim they can help elderly veterans with their applications to receive Veterans Affairs Aid and Attendance benefi t, which can pay as much as $2,000 per month. In soliciting their services, the scammers gain access to the veterans’ fi nancial re-cords, she said.

The FTC received more than 17,000 complaints of military-targeted fi nancial scams last year, Julie Brill, FTC commissioner, said, precipitating months of meet-ings at military installations around the country to hear complaints and collaborate with the services on fi nan-cial training.

Service members are a particularly vulnerable group of consumers, Brill said, due to their young age, inde-pendence and lack of fi nancial experience.

The database “is about being effective, effi cient and responsive” in prosecuting scam artists, she said.

Petraeus urged service members to protect them-selves by understanding the total price of a product with interest – not just the monthly payment – will be before buying, and to consult fi nancial and legal guid-ance on base.

“They have great legal services available to them,” she added.

As this presidential election year un-folds, America’s voting process will get plenty of attention.

Thanks to two members of the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency headquar-ters, sorting through the how-tos of exercising this American right is at the fingertips of everyone in the De-partment of Defense.

Pierre Terry and Laura Gonzalez, both voting assistance officers with the AFISRA Logistics, Installation and Mis-sion Support Directorate at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, condensed an array of voting information into a unit training pamphlet. This pamphlet was identified as a best practice during a recent inspection, then adopted by the DoD for maximum voter exposure.

“That ranks pretty high on my awesome meter,” Terry said of the DoD providing worldwide access to the tri-fold document via an internal website. “It’s nice to know the prod-

uct is benefitting the Federal Voting Assistance Program.”

The FVAP Voting Guide itself is hun-dreds of pages long. Terry and Gonzalez collaborated to compress key informa-tion into a user-friendly tool, providing the right amount of information up front and pointing the way to where voters can go for more details.

It took the duo about three weeks from conception to completion to ensure the brochure was easy to read and under-stand, and that it visually reinforced the “awareness” message.

“The difficult part was narrowing down the information and deciding what to include,” Gonzalez said. “The pamphlet assists DoD family members by listing important websites on how to register to vote and absentee voting.”

Terry and Gonzalez have served as their directorate’s voting assistance of-ficers since 2007.

In even-numbered years, the DoD mandates voter training is given to all personnel. So, in 2008, they de-signed an election brochure that an-swered questions about the election

process, voter registration require-ments, early voting and more.

They were surprised by the num-ber of people who wanted their sim-ple hand-out.

“That’s when it occurred to me,” Terry said. “It would be easier for us to meet this objective if we had a standard pro-cess in place, something people could refer back to at their convenience.”

Thus, what started as a local edu-cational tool to capture the attention of new directorate members evolved into a standardized voting training aid throughout the DoD.

The pamphlet, titled “It’s Your Future, Vote ... How Hard Was That?” has been in circulation at AFISRA since January 2011. The Air Force’s voting action of-ficer distributed it throughout the Air Force prior to its availability DoD-wide.

“What an honor,” Gonzalez said. “Knowing our pamphlet will help people throughout DoD is a wonderful feeling. Both of us are proud we’ve contributed to the success of the FVAP. Voting is a privilege. We definitely want everyone to feel the same.”

Airsickness can be a significant problem for some Air Force pilots, but a program offered at bases throughout the service shows that tak-ing a spin helps aviators cope with the sensations that can result in dizzi-ness, nausea, sweating and vomiting.

The Air Sickness Man-agement Program at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph is operated through the 359th Aero-space-Medicine Squad-ron Aerospace Physiolo-gy Flight, which employs a spinning device called the Bárány chair to ac-climate subjects to the stresses of flying.

“It can be a very gruel-ing program, but it does work,” Airman 1st Class Bradley Schlather, 359th AMDS aerospace physiol-ogy technician, said. “The ASM program has a 98 percent success rate.”

Not all pilots have to take part in the Air Sickness Management Program, Senior Air-man Rhea Stitham, also a 359th AMDS aerospace physiology technician, said. Candidates for the program are typically identified during undergraduate pilot training.

“They either identify themselves, or their flight commander will send them to the flight doctor, who will refer them to the program or place them on medi-cation,” she said. “The medication can be a last resort or a first resort; it re-ally just depends on the flight doc and what he feels is necessary for that in-dividual.”

The ASM program, which lasts three days, includes an interview to deter-mine causes of the participant’s air-sickness.

“Diet can be a big aspect of it,” Stitham said. “Lack of sleep and dehy-

dration can also cause it.”Schlather said eating complex carbo-

hydrates and avoiding simple carbs and dairy products are important dietary factors in overcoming airsickness.

The Bárány chair, which acclimates pilots to the motion they feel when they’re in flight, is used all three days of the program. The subject is spun three times each day, 10 minutes at a time, with a 10-minute rest interval between each spin.

The pace is steady, about 25 revolu-tions per minute, or enough to stimu-late the participant’s vestibular sensory system in the inner ear. Airsickness of-ten occurs when the vestibular sense conflicts with the body’s visual sense.

When subjects are in the chair, in-

structors – members of the 359th AMDS Aerospace Physiology Flight – ask them to perform tasks, such as leaning their head to the left or right or moving their head up and down to simulate movements of the aircraft. To help them combat airsickness, subjects are taught relaxation techniques – such as controlled breathing.

“We keep them aware of what their body’s doing,” Stitham said. “We show them what to do. We ask them to fo-cus on their breathing while they’re still spinning.”

At JBSA-Randolph, only 20 to 25 per-sonnel per year are seen for airsickness issues, Stitham said.

“Some do the full program; others don’t because they present themselves

instead of being referred by the flight commander,” she said. “The numbers are lower here due to the fact that this is not an undergraduate pilot training base.”

Stitham said some pilots who have already had airsickness training at their UPT base don’t take the ASM pro-gram here; they simply use the Bárány chair “to get a refresher before a long holiday or a significant break in train-ing,” especially if they’ve had issues in the past.

For some pilots, the Air Sickness Management Program can be a career saver.

“It’s a very important program be-cause it keeps pilots in their aircraft,” Schlather said.

There’s no wording around it: As-bestos, a mineral material noted for its insulating qualities, is a hazard to people if exposed to them via air-borne fibers. However, there is a dif-ference between removing asbestos completely from a facility and pre-venting its exposure to the public.

The 902nd Civil Engineering Squadron aims for the latter.

On Joint Base San Antonio-Ran-dolph, where many of its facilities were built in the 1930s, there’s no doubt asbestos was widely used in the construction materials. In fact, most facilities built before 1978 have asbestos in some form, Ed Vo-gel, 902nd CES toxic program man-ager, said.

Vogel, and J.D. Turnbow of the 902nd CES are JBSA-Randolph’s sole asbestos inspectors, whose job is to ensure there are no asbestos exposures to any facility occupants. A part of their job is also to pro-vide awareness and educational op-portunities to prevent the release of asbestos fibers.

Knowing what materials contain asbestos is an important first step in facility safety.

Pipe insulation, floor mastics, all 9- by 9-inch floor tiles, some 12- by 12-inch floor tiles, roofing felts, roofing tar and boiler gaskets are among some of the materials con-taining asbestos.

Mechanical rooms with insulated pipes are the most suspect areas that contain larger percentages of asbestos and are carefully moni-tored, Vogel said.

“Most accident-based releases happen in mechanical rooms” by na-ture, Vogel said, “because of wrench slips or other actions that cause pipe insulation damage.”

Vogel said while base occupants should be aware of their surroundings, there is no reason to be alarmed about

asbestos with current safety practices.Minor incidents such as quick im-

pacts to the wall or small cracks in floor tiles do not mean there will be an immediate exposure to asbestos.

“An incident has to be dust-cre-ating to be a problem,” Vogel said. “There is no safe exposure to as-bestos, but if you’re ever concerned about your facility’s safety, you can always call us for an inspection.”

Asbestos is removed from base facilities for two reasons if it is discovered after an inspection: major renovation projects and fri-able materials − capable to cause dustborne agents.

Otherwise, “asbestos is a perfectly good insulator when undamaged,” Vogel said. “It’s been around from the time of the Greeks and Romans

in the first century and was admired for its soft and pliant properties and its ability to withstand heat.”

For every renovation or repair to a building on base, an Air Force Form 332, or Base Civil Engineer-ing Work Request, must be filled out. Once the form is ordered and processed by the CES, an inspection occurs. If any asbestos is found, CES contacts a contractor to profession-ally remove the asbestos.

The number one clause Randolph members must adopt regarding asbestos is “no disturbance, no is-sue.” This means people must never renovate a facility without proper notification, even for smaller do-it-yourself projects. Float mud, a material used in the construction of many walls, contains asbestos and

can be released in microscopic fi-bers if someone were to drill a hole or hammer a nail in the wall.

Safes also can contain asbestos, and must be inspected before they are drilled.

“Our job is to keep the popu-lace safe, and we work with other shops and facility managers to do so,” Turnbow said. “We make oth-ers aware of the risks of asbestos through training.”

The awareness initiative has al-ready positively impacted the base.

“We have never had an asbestos release in an occupied area,” Vogel said.

The professionals who make the repairs and modifi cations that keep the Air Force’s aging T-38s poised for fl ight celebrated a major milestone at Joint Base San Anto-nio-Randolph this week.

Inside Hangar 76, one of three facili-ties that received extensive renovations while its workload continued unabated, the civilians assigned to the 571st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron gath-ered together Feb. 6 and savored their accomplishment – the on-time produc-tion of the 100th T-38 that has come out of the depot since the operation was turned over from contractor Lear Sigler Inc. to the Air Force in October 2010.

“Since that time, we’ve produced 100 straight airplanes that have come out of the depot on time, which is a pretty big feat in our business,” Jay Gregson, 571st AMXS depot maintenance director, said.

Gregson, an Air Force veteran who was called upon to stand up the T-38 depot as an Air Force Materiel Com-mand facility nearly two years ago, said the 100th on-time production aircraft completed by the 571st AMXS, a unit of the 309th Maintenance Wing at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, required an aircraft structural inspection.

Gregson said his team accomplished this feat and attended to many special projects, such as structural inspection time compliance technical orders and video data recorder system and speed-brake switch modifi cations, during a hectic period of transition. They also handled several drop-in maintenance projects that took them as far away as Louisiana to pick up crashed jets.

“We just fi nished our hangars,” he said, referring to the $5.5 million project that transformed Hangars 75 and 76 and part of Bldg. 241, their headquarters at JBSA-Randolph, and included the purchase of equipment, furniture and toolboxes for the mechanics. “It’s been one and a half years in a constant state of renovation and hirings, so this is a signifi cant milestone. These guys have worked hard. We’ve asked them to do a lot.”

The 571st AMXS, which now occupies

four hangars, produces “anywhere from eight to 10 jets per month,” Gregson said, but their workload will soon accelerate even more with two major projects.

“In October we are ramping up for an-other workload – about 13 jets per month – to change magnesium fl ight control rods to aluminum, at 400 hours per jet,” he said. “We’ll take care of 450-plus aircraft in Air Education and Training and Air Combat Commands.”

The team will also embark upon Pacer Classic III, an extensive six-month modi-fi cation program that will produce about 22 aircraft per year, at 12,000 to 14,000 hours per jet.

Gregson said the workload will increase from more than 40,000 hours this fi scal year to more than 102,000 in fi scal 2013 and about 289,000 in fi scal 2014, but rein-forcements are also on the way.

“We will go from 70 people to about 300 in the next two years,” he said. “We’ll hire 100 more this year, from mechanics to planners, schedulers and supply people.”

Gregson said the 571st AMXS was initially able to hire many of the person-nel who worked for LSI.

“We were able to keep the core nu-cleus T-38 experience with our organic workforce and our contract fi eld team, M-1 Services,” he said. “That was our foundation to grow the rest of it. They all have a great attitude.

“We want to be a fl exible, agile, re-sponsive, high-quality facility,” Gregson continued. “We want to be the mainte-nance, repair and overhaul facility of choice for the T-38.”

Addressing his team during the cel-ebration this week, Gregson said their workload is growing while the Air Force is downsizing. The 571st AMXS, which occu-pies Hangars 75, 76, 82 and 83 and most of Bldg. 241, will soon need more hangar space within their “depot campus” to meet the growing demand for MRO on the T-38, especially as the Air Force decides on the new trainer that will eventually replace this workhorse training platform.

“We’re building up,” he said. “That’s a great place to be. You guys are the best. Our Air Force leaders are watching you and they are impressed.”

Air Force policy dictates that military and civilian personnel assume responsibility for all Air Force prop-erty in their custody. The installation Logistics Readi-ness Squadron commander has the responsibility to be accountable for all equipment controlled under the Air Force Equipment Management System for the host base and tenant units. However, equipment items issued to, or otherwise in the possession of, a using organization are the responsibility of that organization’s commander, who in turn assigns that responsibility to a designated equipment custodian.

In recognition of the “cost consciousness culture” developed within Air Education and Training Com-mand, when it comes to accountability of spending government funds, the 902nd Logistics Readiness Squadron Equipment Accountability Element takes its mission seriously.

“Our job is to ensure accountability of all assets as-signed to the installation and tenant units,” Joan Orosco, 902nd LRS Equipment Accountability Element supervi-sor, said. “We serve as the liaison between the Air Force Global Logistics Support Center and our equipment cus-todians to maintain positive inventory control of Joint

Base San Antonio-Randolph’s 9,500-plus assets valued at more than $90 million.”

The assets vary from aerospace ground equipment and aircraft parts to weapons and communications items. The four-person equipment accountability team oversees the actions of 314 equipment custodians, en-suring that each is thoroughly trained regarding man-agement of Air Force equipment and properly accounts

for all equipment items within their respective shops.“We defi nitely stay busy here,” Jo Ann Soriano,

an EAE specialist, said. “We’re always answering phone calls and emails from our custodians ask-ing for assistance. Sometimes we can answer their questions on the spot and sometimes the questions are elevated to higher headquarters, but we always get them an answer.”

The team also conducts annual visits to all organiza-tions to determine if custodians are in compliance with Air Force standards.

“We have to be very thorough during our visits,” Sha-ron Walker, EAE specialist said. “ We must be certain that they are aware of any procedural discrepancies and verify the availability of assets.”

Every custodian plays a vital role in maintaining proper accountability of assets on their accounts be-cause equipment items require formal supply property accountability that must be refl ected on the organiza-tion’s custodian authorization/custody receipt list.

In addition to working equipment accountability is-sues on the base, the team also coordinates equipment transfers and issues abroad.

“Our reach is worldwide, from helping other bases acquire equipment assets to fi x aircraft to deploying weapons downrange,” Mirtha McLure, EAE specialist, said.

Air Force officials are field testing a new perfor-mance feedback worksheet to assess how supervisors interact and provide feedback to their Airmen.

The Airman Comprehensive Assessment work-sheet is designed to increase supervisor awareness of activities affecting their Airmen and better fa-cilitate interaction between Airmen and their su-pervisors.

The performance feedback program was designed as a formal communication between the supervi-sor and Airman to establish expectations regarding duty performance, Will Brown, Air Force Evalua-tions and Recognition Programs Branch chief at the Air Force Personnel Center, said.

worksheet is supervisor driven and doesn’t allow Airmen to formally assess themselves during the feedback session, he explained.

“As the Air Force continues enhancing our Air-men’s capabilities, additional areas are needed in the performance feedback process to encompass the aspects of an Airman’s life,” Brown said. “By instituting a subordinate’s self-assessment in the feedback process, we believe the ACA worksheet will create a conduit for broader, more open com-munication between Airmen and their supervi-sors.”

The first phase of field testing began Feb. 3 at 18 active-duty Air Force bases worldwide and one Air Reserve base. Airmen at selected bases are using the ACA worksheet during the February through June test window when their normal initial or mid-term feedback is performed.

The ACA worksheet has legacy blocks for physical fitness, training and teamwork, but also takes into account the critical role Airmen have in support-ing the mission as well as focusing on individuals’ deployment readiness and the Airman’s personal and professional goals.

Similar to the current feedback worksheet, there is a block for supervisors to communicate expec-tations, strengths and weaknesses, and make im-provement recommendations, officials said. Airmen at the test bases will receive an electronic noti-fication with additional information on where to retrieve the test forms and instructions.

As part of the ACA test, supervisors and Airmen will receive a survey within 30 days of their feed-back session to determine if the ACA worksheet should be implemented Air Force-wide and any improvement recommendations to the process.

Massage therapy, identified as a healing art, has its origins cred-ited to the Chinese a few thou-sand years ago, where rubbing the limbs served as a preventa-tive measure in fighting colds and restoring the body. However, massage therapy may be as old as history itself, as physical touch is one of the most telling and nec-essary roles in the survival of hu-man beings.

It was the ancient healing powers of massage that drew Melanie Andraus and Douglas Stafford, 902nd Force Support Squadron massage therapists, to learn and practice the craft.

Andraus suffered a high school track injury and was referred to a massage therapist and Stafford practiced mas-sage techniques learned from his sister at a fitness summer camp he used to teach, where both testified to seeing immedi-ate positive health effects.

For all Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph members with access to the gym, Andraus and Doug-las can lend helping hands in their muscle and stress relief. Both therapists, contracted on base from Zeitgeist Expressions Inc., offer their services through appointment, which can be ar-ranged by calling 271-7411.

The pricing for on-base mas-sage therapy is $30 for a half-hour, $50 for one hour and $75 for one and a half hours.

The massage therapy room, located in the Rambler Fitness Center, Bldg. 999, is set up to create a specific mood of re-laxation, adorned with candles and dim lights.

The entire experience is de-signed to maintain one’s physi-cal, mental and emotional well-being, Andraus said.

“Massage therapy has many health benefits, such as muscle

relief, increased blood circula-tion and headache relief,” she said.

Despite numerous health ben-efits related to body massage, anyone can benefit from a ses-sion, Stafford said.

“Sometimes people don’t come in because they’re hurt,” he said. “Many like the way it makes them feel, and they leave happier and with more energy because of massage.”

A misconception people may have about massage therapy is that it is an alternative for medi-cal treatment.

“Massage therapy is not pain management,” Andraus said. “Massage can help people re-duce their stress or tension lev-els, or even stay on top of them proactively, but if you’re in pain, we advise you go see a doctor.

“There’s chronic pain that goes beyond therapy,” Andraus said. “However, the important thing to remember is people's muscles are very unbalanced, which can cause pain down the road. We’re all about strength-ening the right muscles, and our goal is to see a positive change in the client’s health.”

In the case of muscle imbal-ance, bad posture is a com-mon contributor to subsequent pain, especially in the back and shoulder area.

“I can tell where pain will be just from asking someone what they do,” Stafford said. “Some-times people get freaked out, es-pecially very fit Airmen, when I find and tell them about problem spots in their body.”

Newcomers to JBSA-Ran-dolph massage therapy are re-quired to fill out a new client form, including a form discuss-ing medical liability.

The four types of massage therapies offered are deep tissue, Swedish, sports massage and pre-natal, each with techniques de-signed around them to offer the best match for what clients want.

It was a few massage sessions with a senior citizen woman that cap stoned and solidified Stafford’s career.

“Pain was a lifelong afflic-tion for this particular woman,” Stafford said. “I kept working on her problem spots, and before long, her pain was gone. It was miraculous actually. She finally felt physically good about herself. I was able to see my work come to fruition, and I really knew then

I could make a change.”Seeing changes and help-

ing people feel better is reason enough to continue her work, Andraus said.

Push the limits Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph Family Housing hosts a run/bike/run Saturday at 7 a.m. at Eberle Park. Participants will run a five-kilometer course, bike 10 miles and finish with a mile and a half run.

Li'l Renegades basketball Li'l Renegades is a parent/child program that helps 3- and 4-year-old children build confidence while learning basic basketball skills. Regis-ter at Youth Programs, Bldg. 585, Wednesday through Feb. 29. The cost is $40 per child, and the program runs for six weeks beginning in March.

New Year, New You The Rambler Fitness Center offers a self-monitored program, “New Year, New You,” during normal operating hours. “New Year, New You” cards are available from the staff. The year-long program involves running/walking 70 miles, attending 24 group aerobic classes and biking 36 miles.

Attention bikers The fitness center offers bike rides every Thursday, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. A road bike or cyclo-cross bike in good working condition is needed. Appropri-ate cycling attire and gear are required. These rides are led by a member of USA Cycling.
