Joint degree bringing together a multidisciplinary team of engineering students in Amsterdam
The master’s Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering (MSc MADE) is an interdisciplinary master’s programme of both Wageningen University & Research and Delft University of Technology that focuses on sustainable development. Students who successfully finish this programme, will receive a joint degree from both universities. This two-years Master mainly takes place at AMS Institute in Amsterdam.
AMS institute focuses on Research, Valorisation and Education on Metropolitan Solutions in the fields of Smart Urban Mobility, Urban Energy, Circularity in Urban Regions, Metropolitan Food Systems, Urban Data and Intelligence and Climate Resilient Cities. In the MSc MADE programme students will tackle particularly complex problems deriving from the aforementioned fields.

MSc MADE programme
The MADE programme trains students to identify and analyze contemporary metropolitan challenges and create innovative and sustainable solutions. Over the course of two years, students are provided with thorough training in academic skills and project work. The MSc MADE is connected to the inter-and transdisciplinary research portfolio of the two partner universities, AMS Institute, and industrial and societal partners.

Metropolitan Solutions
In the first year students focus on three core themes to acquire the competencies to solve metropolitan problems. In the course Metropolitan Challenges students are introduced to various typologies of metropoles around the world. The course Metropolitan Innovators is more about discussing and integrating the methodological and conceptual approaches to engage with metropolitan problems and potential solutions. The Entrepreneurial courses focus on awareness of what it takes to engage in entrepreneurial projects and ventures. Students will also be supported in developing implementation strategies for their metropolitan challenges. In the Data courses students learn to analyze Big Data and connect it to geographical data. In the last course of the year (Metropolitan Solutions) students bring all their learning experiences together and develop a consultancy or project plan, including a plan for analysis, to tackle a metropolitan challenge. Electives allow for self-designed tracks in Wageningen and Delft University of Technology to facilitate specialization.
MSc MADE programme
In the second year, the living lab course supports co-operation with public or private partners in the Amsterdam metropolitan region. The thesis course supports advanced theoretical understanding of metropolitan complexities, and of related methods needed to substantiate innovative socio-technical solutions.
Living lab as learning environment
In the Living Lab course, students work on authentic challenges in a real-life context in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region. They work closely together with different stakeholders (see picture) in co-creating innovative products to tackle the challenges. As part of this course, students organize an Exhibition to present their products and a Masterclass to share their insights and experiences gained during their living lab process.

As a Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering graduate you will be both an expert and an integrator.
