In the summer of 2017 I worked in Mexico City at Ambrosi Etchegaray, a Mexican architecture firm that specializes in multi and single family housing projects. I worked

Senior Project Architects: Lucas Hoops, Mariana Avila Flynn

with Senior Project Architects to update sections of a home, by using an engineers structural notes. I also built models, and collaborated on a competition board.

I worked as an associate designer with a small team to design a residential complex with 27 and 32 floor towers through the beginning of design development. I personally laid out multiple iterations of units in the tower portion of both buildings and worked with a project manager to

locate space for all required mechanical and structural elements. The team and I managed 540 residential units, and worked to create a single parking and podium scheme to accommodate residents in both towers. I also set up all final working DD files in Autocad for both buildings.

Social clubs have been the highlight of the 'upper class', white male society for hundreds of years. How can a contemporary club retain the sense of camaraderie that clubs historically have, while maintaining a standard of inclusivity and progressiveness? The Central Park Conservancy Club is a repository for the

different species of Central Park, where the members take care of the plants and the public is granted entrance for learning and leisure. Users gather around the documentation and understanding of the park. The club contains a variety of plants and animals as wells as provides space for people to lounge, read, gather and learn.

Borders Through Time

Professor Mabel Wilson & Trevor LamphierPartner Seda OznalFall 2017

Borders are a popular but relevant topic of discussion and this studio researched and disseminated issues pertaining to border conditions at multiple scales.

We mapped the ‘United Nations Buffer Zone’ in Cyprus as one example which contains both physical and social borders that are complexly intertwined locally and globally.

We used lessons from Cyprus to understand the potential future an Amazon headquarters would have over a 50 year time period in Detroit, Michigan. The headquarters would have to navigate the racial, physical and technological borders which a post industrial city such as Detroit contains.

Cars dictate circulation trends around the city of New York, but what if there were 50% fewer cars on the streets? This project imagines that half of the surface area taken up by streets is given back to the city for public or private consumption.

The concept behind the project is to create a park spanning the highway, bridging

the space between public housing on the west and the river on the east. The park becomes a gridded field condition of columns where activity can happen in pockets. A change in materiality and a transformation of the grid helps to define unique spaces throughout the park. Columns are thinned out to allow for fields, animals farms, ponds, etc.

This housing project attempts to answer the question: How can we create both a sense of individuality and multiple places of repose within density? We explored the traits of the tower and townhouse typologies and found that the townhouse

can be very individual while the tower allows for a high amount of density. The resulting hybrid of these two typologies is demonstrated below.

Organization:The units are organized around the egress core, with two units per floor. There are three unit sizes and all units are lined with built-in furniture which delineate use within the space, allow for storage, and provide visual and spatial continuity.

Access:Each unit has two points of access; users can enter via a standard fire stair and elevator core, or they can use the ‘front door’. The ‘front door’ has its own stoop and connects to an exterior staircase; the staircase provides residents with places for seating or circulation.

Repose:The tower provides moments of repose both inside and outside of the units. The floor steps down to form a seating area where one can observe events in the courtyard below. The stoop condition outside each apartment allows residents to pause for private reflection or public interaction.

Organization:The units are organized so that the main living and dining area interacts with the courtyard. Sleeping areas are situated above. There is additional space at the street level for a studio or office; this allows residents the flexibility to program their home as they wish.

Access:Each unit has two points of access; users can enter via the street or the courtyard. There is a clear circulation path from street to courtyard that pulls the user up and through the unit.

Repose:The townhouse has a variety of schemes which provide places of repose. Expanded stairs, subtle floor stepping and clear circulation invite the user to pause within the home. A step from the units to the courtyard blurs the line between inside and outside, public and private.

Silos of Knowledge

Professor Robert MarinoSpring 2016

This project (a library in the center of Brooklyn), was an opportunity to explore space and materiality as they relate to experience and program.

The library is composed of six ‘silos of knowledge’, each organized the same way but centering around different themes (dance, cooking, gaming, etc), and arranged around a courtyard. Each ‘silo’

contains four floors of space relating to its theme; a work space on the first floor, two floors of book stacks and a meeting space.

The structure and facade of the building become one through the use of brick; brick arches flow into a red and glass brick facade.

Precision and craft are important in all aspect of my work from pieces I do in studio to things I do on the side. I enjoy the hands on aspect of sculpting, working in wood, painting and creating objects. Starting top left: sculpted clay positive and cast plaster negative; CNC flip milled

plywood joint hand finished and hand carved rubber; clay sculpted with plaster cast negative and positive mold; oil paint on wood panel.
