Before AfterPicture of my Dad and Uncle Fake Magazine Cover damaged in a floodPhoto: Tom Jones, Tom and Jerry 1966 16. James Butchart started his career working semi-professionally asphotographer while attending the Art Institute of Seattle. It wasencouraged by the college so in his 7th and 8th quarter of school he begandoing Senior pictures and Models Test Shots. He graduated from the ArtInstitute of Seattle in 1993 with a degree in Commercial Photography andmoved to Los Angeles, California. In L.A. he began shooting tons ofpublicity stuff and head shots for actors. This turned into makingmagazine covers for the local magazines. He was shooting pictures of hisrental home for the rental agency and their clients got angry when theysaw how nice his pictures were compared to theirs. So the rental agencystarted giving their clients his number and now he specializes inArchitecture and Interiors. These days most of Jamess clients are RealEstate Agents, Contractors, Architects, and Developers. He no longer hasto market himself, all of his business is through referrals. James lived inLas Vegas for 2 Years and owns a home in Palm Springs, California andspends most of his time traveling the triangle between the three citiesworking for existing customers. When he use to shoot magazines heIllustration: James negotiated for page add to market himself on top of his fee. Butchart 2011Question #1: Did you got to school to become a photographer?Question #2: How did you get started in the industry after graduating? Question #3:What kind of clients do you have and how do youmarket yourself? 17. For Equipment James has acomplete Nikon Set-Up heuses for portraits and aComplete Canon Set-Up heuses for interiors andarchitecture. For software heuses Adobe CS5 for all of hisHDR and editing. He stilllikes the old Microsoft PhotoImage Pro (Obsolete Now)for retouching head shots. Most of his friends are alsophotographers so he keepsup on new techniques andfresh ideas through hisnetworking of friends. Healso keeps an eye on whatthe current style trends are.According to him the key isto provide the best lightingand composition possible tohis clients.Photo: James Butchart, Nicholas Cages Home, 2011 Question #4:What equipment and software do you use?Question #5:How do you get new ideas and keep up on modern Techniques? 18. Doing these photos of ZsaZsa Gabors house for salehas led to his favoriteproject so far. The listingagents counter parts inParis, France saw thephotos and are now flyinghim back and forth to Parisfor photo shoots. This isJamess favorite part abouthis career, that he gets tosee so many beautifulplaces. The negative part isthat it is tied so heavily intothe real estate market thatit can be feast or famine. The Zsa Zsa Gabor Estate In Bel Air The estate includes a staff quarters and a statue-flanked pool.(photo courtesy of James Butchart) Question #6: What is it that you like and dislike about your career choice?Question #7:What is your favorite project so far? For More Pictures Go To: http://jamesbutchartphotographer.com/ 19. I would be thrilled to have a career in any one of these three areas. Like James Ilove to take picture of beautiful things, its one of the reasons I love the PacificNorthwest. I truly enjoy editing photos and I like the challenges that repairing anold damaged photo brings. It looks like when you start off in photography youneed to get whatever work you can and establish a clientele base and getrecognition. Networking with people in the industry and clients is essential andthis is what is my weakest point. I was going to wait until I graduated to seek ajob in the industry since I all ready have a solid steady job, but feel now that Ishould really start seeking out a job now before I graduate. The expected growthrate in any one of my 3 categories is about the same 12%-14% and on averagewith the national employment growth rate for all careers. The only real surprise Ifound is that the average pay in all 3 categories was much higher than I thought itwould be, by about $15,000. 20.
