Brrrr, you can certainly feel the chill in the air as Winter slides around the corner. I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. I love the crisp morning air, and the wonderful array of soups and stews that grace my dinner table throughout the season.

We have almost crept to the middle of the year! And... it’s TAX time! Coupled with this will be the end of Term 2 for those at school, and soon to be a New Financial Year for our friends in business. The tail end of June is certainly a busy one!

As another month passes, I wish I could hit the ‘pause’ button for just a moment.

This month, we have some great stories centred around Businesses of all shapes and sizes. From ‘New’ Businesses as featured in our cover story, to Award Winning Businesses (pg.9), to long-standing Family Businesses (pg.11); despite their diff erences, one thing is certain, we are surrounded by many hard working, dedicated and determined business owners in this wonderful community of ours.

Penrith has announced funding is available for events that help bring communities together and celebrate our cultural diversity.

“Penrith is home to a vast array of culturally diverse communities and there are so many reasons to celebrate uniqueness, harmony and social cohesion,” said Stuart Ayres

The 2015/16 Multicultural NSW Celebration Grants provide funding of up to $5,000 for festivals and events that bring communities together

“I would encourage any non-for-profi t community organisation or local council planning an event to consider applying.”

Last fi nancial year, more than 100 local community events received funding under the Celebration Grants program.

“Our cultural diversity is something we should cherish and celebrate every day,” Minister for Multiculturalism John Ajaka said.

Only not- for-profi t community organisations and local councils staging events for the entire community are eligible to apply and applications close 17 June 2016. Applications open three times a year.

Projects are assessed on how many people are likely to attend, whether the project will benefi t intercultural understanding and be cost eff ective.

Church worship has been a constant throughout the last 2000 plus years. As in the past, so too today, there is variation in acts of worship. These variations however have a common denominator – to pray and praise and more importantly to continue to do what Jesus the Christ expects of us: the ‘breaking

of bread’. In this, the life, work, execution, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus is recalled and this remains the spiritual sustenance for the worshipper.

Surround the ‘breaking of bread’ with whatever variety of worship there still remains four basic requirements. First is preparation: to discipline the self to be still and wind down from everyday thought. Simply to wait on God. Second is to practice recognition: we are who we are and in being honest with ourselves we recognize our strength and weakness. The third is trust: it is through the Holy Trinity that we have the freedom to ‘be’ not in conformity to self but in conformity to living that enhances and to appreciating the wonderful universe in which we live.

The fourth is giving: Jesus the Christ before his execution did not preach a sermon- he invited his followers to a meal. The sacred ‘breaking of bread’ that has been a constant in Christian worship.

It is when we participate in the meal and honestly reflect, the end result is that we are motivated not by ourselves but that in all things [thoughts, actions] we do it “In Christ”. Life is short for few reach to be over 100 years in age. Life in itself is a learning

process which cannot ignore the spiritual dimension and that is why the sacred meal will always remain a constant.

Local residents of Jordan Springs have ‘spoken out’ about the developing need for direct school buses to and from Jordan Springs. It is alleged that school children are required to catch a bus to the shops in Cranebrook and from there, take a public bus to Jordan Springs, taking approximately 40 minutes for a 5km journey.

Parents of school children have made attempts to bring about change, however, they have said “that these attempts have been unsuccessful to date.”

According to local resident Claudia Daemen “about 50 people have called the bus company but have all been told to direct this issue to their local member. Claudia has said that “[they] have yet [been able] to set up an appointment with Prue Carr regarding the issue, but plan to do so.”

Facebook posts on the Jordan Springs Group has seen a great deal of interest surrounding the issue of school buses.

Claudia says “that the only thing local residents can do is just keep asking and putting pressure on this issue in order to bring about some sort of solution. Residents of Jordan Springs were

promised a school within the area, but they do understand that all surrounding schools need to be fi lled fi rst. The problem parents are now facing, is that while they wait for their own local school, they are having to put their children in after school care as it is just not safe for them to get public transport home.”

Local residents like Claudia are hoping that eventually a direct school bus will pick up both Primary and High School students from the shops and take them to all surrounding schools including Llandilo Public School and Xavier Collage. They will then be picked up from school and do the return trip in the afternoon. This will ensure that school children safely get to and from school and removes the need for them to catch public transport.

While all parents understand that having issues such as these resolved takes time, they hope that a solution will be made available soon.

This month we continue the series on Parent Traps that we started in April.

Do you give your child ‘accidental rewards’ for his/her undesirable behaviour?

Social Attention

Smiling or laughing at your child’s undesirable behaviour will ensure that she will do the behaviour again. Spending a lot of time trying to reason with, or arguing with your child over his behaviour may also guarantee that you will see it again. Material Reward

This is the reward that children get when they whinge and cry at the supermarket for a toy or chocolate, and they get it to keep them quiet.Activity Rewards

An activity reward is where the parent redirects or distracts a child from her undesirable behaviour with an activity or a food treat, of directly addressing the behaviour.

Do you use a lot of redirection or distraction to address your child’s behaviour? They are OK sometimes, but I worry when I see parents using redirection or distraction a lot because it indicates that the parent feels uncomfortable about setting boundaries and limits. Children need boundaries and limits to stay physically and emotionally safe, and when the parent has diffi culties in this regard it can elicit extreme behaviour from the child.Remedy?

Ignore minor mistaken behaviour. Stay calm, and give your child clear, calm instructions. It’s OK

to set a boundary or limit for your child. It’s OK to say ‘no’. If you are in public, disregard comments and looks from other people – chances are they don’t have a degree in child psychology.Struggling?

Over the holidays, our playground took on a face lift. Through the ‘Peaceful Playgrounds Project’, our school has received $10 000 worth of resources, including playground markings, sport equipment and teacher training. The purpose is to get children more active not only in the playground but also during class learning time. This is part of a study being done by Macquarie University about how movement impacts on a child’s ability to stay focused on learning.

Stage 3 students were involved in choosing what sort of markings would be best for our playground spaces. Instead of asking for the usual handball courts and hopscotches, they considered multipurpose squares and circles that could lend themselves to a selection of games. They even designed a fi tness track that curves around the perimeter of the netball court and is being used for all sorts of games and activities.

Teachers have been taking their students outside to engage with these areas and I am delighted to see groups of students during playtime, using ingenuity and collaboration to make up their own games. One of the common questions I get asked after someone dies, is, “When’s a good time to sort through their stuff ? ” People shift between, “I need to go through their stuff ” and “I don’t

want to do it”. When other family members are involved it’s really complicated.

These people are dealing with other family members who are coping with their grief diff erently. Emotions run wild, fi ghts ensue. There can be angry confrontations.

So here are some tips on how to get through this tough time.1. Family Meeting

Get all the family together. Find out what everyone wants to do. Create a step-by-step plan showing when you’re going to meet, who is to do which jobs and if you want one person to have the fi nal say. Make sure everyone is on the same page.

2. Discuss as you Go

Even following the plan, problems can arise. If this happens discuss it and resolve it. You might need to leave it for a day or two and come back together to make a fi nal decision. If emotions run too high, talk to someone who isn’t emotionally involved or, agree to disagree. It might also help if you consider what your loved one would have wanted done.

3. Make a List

When you have the family meeting write everything down that you have agreed on, have everyone read and sign it.

It can be diffi cult to start sorting through a loved ones things. What to keep, what to throw out and agreeing on it as a family. These tips are a starting point. I hope you get through it in peace.

Keeping Our Culture Alive

Minister for Indigenous Aff airs, The Hon Senator Nigel Scullion MP, has been welcomed by the Nepean Community and Neighbourhood Services (NCNS) in Cranebrook. There he was treated to traditional Indigenous dancing and a tour of the Centre’s cultural activities by Facilitator, Tracie Harris.

After the performance, centre Managing Director, Joy Impiombato arranged a meeting between NCNS management and community members.

The meeting discussed the importance of keeping cultural traditions alive, especially with western Sydney being host to a large indigenous population, many from families who originated in country New South Wales.

The NCNS has recognised this through running programmes like the dance class, which is based on traditional performances from the Murri Warri (around Brewarrina).

Speaking after the event, Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott MP said, “It was great to have the Minister for Indigenous Aff airs in Cranebrook, looking at the essential community work that Joy and her team perform.

“The NCNS is a facility that gives kids and their family’s inspiration and quite often, hope through tough times”.

The Federal Government has recently recommitted to the centre’s funding, providing $478,000 towards schooling and strategic development through programmes helping children with education, safety, and wellbeing over a period of three years. Llandilo Farm Fresh Eggs, located on Ninth Ave in Llandilo, has approximately 13,000 chickens producing fresh eggs daily. The business has been in the family since 1963 and has been located in Llandilo since 1976.

Current owner of Llandilo Farm Fresh Eggs Michael Galea, is a third generation owner of the farm and family business. Michael’s grandfather Frank Gauci started the business in 1963 at its original location on Maxwell Street in South Penrith.

Since 1973, the business has been located in Llandilo and is situated only 1km off the Northern Road. With a shop on the farm, Michael is able to sell not only fresh eggs, but bags of chicken feed and both chicken and cow manure. Laying hens can also be purchased at the farm.

Michael has said that “farm fresh eggs are of the best quality and are always extra fresh.” The eggs sold at the farm are normally always collected and sold on the same day.

While the public cannot collect their own eggs, they are able to spend some time on the farm and watch the machines collect all the eggs. Michael mentioned that “many people bring their children and watch the eggs get collected and graded.”

Being able to watch the eggs get collected and then go through the necessary processes, one can be completely sure that the produce they are buying is defi nitely fresh and of a very high quality.

Llandilo Farm Fresh Eggs is open six days a week Monday- Saturday from 8am-5pm and invites anyone to just drop in and interact with the egg collection, grading and selling process.

The Dog Lovers Show is set to again transform the Hordern Pavilion and Royal Hall of Industries into a haven for dog lovers as it bounds back into Sydney town on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th August 2016.

The show will play host to over 30 DOGS NSW Breed Clubs, hundreds of stalls off ering all the latest and greatest gear for your pooch, free presentations from celebrity dog experts, free vet, grooming and training demonstrations and most importantly the opportunity to get up-close-and-personal with literally hundreds of beautiful dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds!

Founder and CEO Jason Humphris remains committed to ensuring that the event continues to help educate visitors on dog adoption and is proud of the fact the show has helped to fi nd loving homes for hundreds of dogs in need:
