A little boy’s life hangs in the balance and two local Jordan Springs mums have joined forces, in a desperate bid to raise funds towards the $100,000 needed for life-saving surgery.

Ashmit, a ten year old Fijian boy was recently diagnosed with aggressive cancer that cannot be treated in Fiji. A huge tumour above his left ear has infi ltrated his skull and sinuses and doubled in size in the past six weeks. He will not survive without the emergency surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, all of which is available in Australia. Australian based charity Fijikids is co-ordinating fundraising eff orts and the action needed to get Ashmit to Australia.

“As parents ourselves we can only imagine how desperate Ashmit’s father is for help so we are doing what we can to help Fijikids raise the money needed”

Ashmit is from a rural area close to popular tourist resorts on Fiji’s Coral Coast. His father picks vegetables for a few dollars a day and is solo parent to three young boys. They live in an abandoned farm house with no electricity and share the only bed.

Penrith Local Woman Of The Year Announced

Minister for Women Pru Goward was joined by Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres to announce Paige Hadley as the 2016 Local Woman of the Year for Penrith.

Ms Goward said Ms Hadley’s nomination recognises her outstanding achievements through many years of hard work and dedication.

“It’s the hard work of community heroes like Paige that serves as an inspiration to young women across the community and New South Wales,” Ms Goward said.

Paige is an Australian international netballer. Primarily a wing attack and centre player, she is a member of the Australian national team and plays in the ANZ Championship for the NSW Swifts.

Paige ruptured her left anterior cruciate ligament in 2014 which ruled out of the remainder of the season however she made a successful comeback in 2015.

Paige was part of the Australian Diamonds January 2016 tour of England. The Diamonds took a clean sweep of the Test series against the Roses with a 3-0 victory.

Mr Ayres said he was delighted to name Ms Hadley the 2016 Penrith Local Woman of the Year.

“It is truly a privilege to be able to acknowledge Paige’s work and her success not just as a local but as a strong woman representing Australia,” Mr Ayres said.

Local award winners will be invited to join their Member of Parliament at the 2016 NSW Women of the Year award ceremony to be held at Parliament House in March.

Easter is ‘early this year’, as unlike Christmas it does not have a set date being subject to the occurrence of a full moon in the season. For the Christian, Easter is the culmination of the Incarnation [Emmanuel: ‘God with us’] that is celebrated at Christmas. Easter recalls the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus, the Palestinian

Jew, which still presents to the world at large the challenge to comprehend the reality in which one exists. In the long history as we understand it of the universe and humans in particular, the gospel [good news] given by Jesus has caused on reflection for him to be accepted as the Christ who faced the reality of sin and overcame it.

It is important to reflect that Jesus calls us to faith. Faith, in that the whole of creation, although through history and even now burden by so much that depreciates, is moving to that wonderful summation when we shall see God. From faith emanates worship and worship allows us to consolidate our prayers within the freedom we have simply ‘to be’. Discipline in life is essential but can never over-ride the wonderful freedom we have to ‘be our selves’ and to shun all that depreciates life. From worship comes the reality of love- not “Hollywood scenarios” but the generous giving of oneself and being aware that in many situations love can be given at a cost.

An important aspect of love is compassion. No authority can compel or direct compassion, it is engendered by true love. When Saint Peter was asked by Jesus “do you love me?” He was

stunned by the reply “feed my sheep” and it was Peter, who when challenged at the trial of Jesus ‘do you know this man?’ and giving his denial went out and is recorded ‘wept bitterly’. However it was given to Peter to come down in history as teacher of the Faith. Peter’s work resulted in him in turn being crucified..

I am often asked by parents ‘How long will it take for my child to Learn To Swim?”

Unfortunately, it is not a question I can answer simply, as every child is diff erent, and learning to swim is a long term, ongoing process.

Consistency is the key to the development and maintenance of swimming skills, so attending lessons should become an established part of your child’s weekly routine throughout their infant, preschool and early school years. Regular lessons all year round allow your child to practise the swimming skills appropriate to their developmental stage and learn at their own pace.

Not seeing much progress this month? As with any skill, it is normal for the child to go through periods of plateau, regression and developmental leaps throughout the process of learning to swim, but over time constant progress is being made.

We usually say (as general guide) that your child has become a capable swimmer when they are able to swim 400 metres with good technique, without stopping, and without becoming exhausted. This level of skill may take children individual amounts of time to reach, but it establishes a strong swimming foundation. These swimming skills should then be retained in children over 7 years of age, whereas younger children need consistent reinforcement to maintain their competency.

As to when to start, Australian experts recommend starting swimming lessons from 6 months, but you can and should practice early water familiarisation before this.

Babies are not born with a fear of the water, instead this fear is acquired, so make sure baby has regular baths and showers, and becomes comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head. Your 6 month old will then accept the water more readily, and with less fear than an older child.

It is important to remember that swimming is not just another option on the list of sports and activities available to children – it is an invaluable lifelong skill that may just save their lives.

Lendlease’s Skilling & Employment Centre will host a variety of workshops for job seekers throughout 2016. This continued community support follows the success of assisting more than 4,000 Penrith locals to gain employment to date.

Each month, Lendlease will hold a workshop at the Skilling & Employment Centre covering the steps involved in obtaining a new job. With access to helpful Centre staff, local residents

will have the opportunity to ask questions and gain valuable insights about resume development and job vacancy websites to improve their chances of securing a job.

New courses targeting mature job seekers, “Seeking Employment”, will be held at Jordan Springs Community Corner and “Computers for Work” will be held at Ropes Crossing.

Since opening its doors in 2005, the Skilling & Employment Centre has assisted people in the local community at a rate of over one job per day by referring 800 clients to accredited training and providing job skills courses to 1,200 local people.

General Manager for Lendlease’s Communities business in NSW/ACT, Arthur Ilias, said.

Lendlease’s investment in the Skilling & Employment Centre was just one way it was supporting job creation opportunities in the area to complement the jobs already created by the development of the Jordan Springs and Ropes Crossing communities.

“The Centre and the various workshops we hold throughout the year will continue to play a role in meeting the skilling and job requirements generated by the delivery of the next stage of the Jordan Springs community, which has commenced construction.”

When parents give their children negative emotional messages that focus on who the child is rather than his or her behaviour, they unwittingly dig a pit of shame so deep and so wide, it may take the child a lifetime to climb out of it.

“You do it deliberately to annoy me”“I’m going to ring grandma to tell her how awful you are”“You are as stupid as your father”“Go ahead and try it, you’ll just fail like you always do”“Why are you so clumsy?”“I’m so angry with you I can’t stand the sight of you”Negative and emotional messages that attack a child’s sense

of self and what she can do, leave their mark and can lead to mental health problems into adolescence and adulthood.

When parents approach a child’s mistaken behaviour at the level of the behaviour, they say things like…

“I’m really disappointed that you kicked the ball at the laundry window, especially as I warned you about it fi ve minutes ago.”

“What might have been a better choice?”“When you and your brother argue, I feel so frustrated.”A little bit of guilt is healthy and adaptive. Children learn what

is acceptable behaviour when parents focus on communicating what they didn’t like about the behaviour and how the child might do better next time. Prolonged ranting, raving, lecturing, and anger cause excessive guilt which induces shame.

One of my colleagues saw an interaction between a parent and a child the other day. The mother screamed at him “how many times do I have to tell you not to do that” and she walked away from him. The little boy, no older than 3, put his head down and banged his head with both fi sts. He then went and sat behind a park bench and cried.

Was he feeling shame or guilt do you think? Is he learning that he can’t rely on the adults in his life to help organise his thoughts and feelings, and more importantly his behaviours?

Penrith Christian School is this year celebrating 35 years of operation as a Christian school serving the Penrith region.

The School commenced as a ministry of what was then the Penrith Christian Fellowship Centre and was located in Dean Place before moving to a rural site in the Londonderry area in 1983-1984.

In 1985 the School was relocated to its current site on the junction of the Northern Road and the M4 Motorway; the church building having been completed in 1984.

Since then, Penrith Christian School has grown steadily as parents, seeking a Christian education for their children, have continued to support the school. In the early days the buildings were built with the aid of volunteers, and much growth in the School’s facilities is attributed to the commitment and the service of those early pioneers.

By the mid-90s the existing Library (now called the iCentre), and associated technology blocks, were completed as the School moved into secondary education and expansion to two streams.

The School continues to be a vital part of the ministry of ImagineNations Church; and, over the years has introduced additional classes in the secondary years, as well as Early Childhood Services, off ering Preschool and Preparatory School programs for 3 and 4 year-olds.

Throughout the years PCS has never lost sight of the vision and goal of the founders who wanted to provide an education for our children that acknowledged the centrality of the Christian worldview in all areas of the curriculum; developing students in the academic, social, physical and spiritual domains.

These days we have moved well and truly into the 21st Century with a technology-rich environment, and diverse learning experiences across a wide range of subjects and interest areas. We are thankful to God, and to our founders and supporters, for the wonderful years of assisting families in bringing up their children to know the grace and love of our Lord, and to be active in expressing that through service in our local, national and global communities.

The NSW Youth and Junior Athletics championships were held last month at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. The athletes were excited to be competing at the newly renovated venue and good performances were expected.

Local residents Shane and Shannon Munaweera truly shone!

Shannon competed in the Under 18 Women Hammer Throw. With a mighty eff ort of 39.51m. She won the Bronze medal. She was just short of her competition personal best distance and tantalisingly close to the magic 40m.

With an outstanding leap of 6.41m, Shane won the Silver Medal in the Under 17 Boys Long Jump. As a result of these performances, both Shannon and Shane have qualifi ed to represent NSW at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships, which will be held in Perth in March 2016.

Representing local Little Athletics Centre Jamison, the siblings competed at the Regional Championships. Shannon competed at her last Little Athletics competition after 12 years of competing.

Shane also competed at the Little Athletics Region 6 Championships last month, in the Under 15 Boys representing Jamison Little Athletics Centre. He won Gold in Long Jump, Discus and 100m Hurdles, Silver in 100m and Bronze in 200m. Shane broke the Region Long Jump, 100m Hurdles and 200m records, following up his eff ort of another record at the zone championships in December 2015.

A Rural Outlook With 21st Century VisionLlandilo Public School is

located on Seventh Ave, Llandilo. We are at the heart of

MEET LAURAHi Everyone,

I’m Laura Jones and I am so grateful and very excited to be joining the District Gazette Team as their Journalist.

I was born in Johannesburg South Africa and have lived in Australia for the past seven years. I am currently a third year Journalism Student and am loving every second of working and gaining experience within the industry.

My family is made up of my parents, my younger brother and myself. My brother just recently fi nished his HSC and will be starting university this year doing a Bachelor of Science. My Dad is an engineer and my Mum is a primary school teacher.

I reside locally and during my free time I enjoy weight training and surprisingly enough... fi shing!

Easter and Grief – The Season of Loss and Renewal

Easter is celebrated all over the world by chocolate eggs and bunnies. For Christians the focus is on the death and resurrection of Jesus

Christ and living in peace and love. For many people it’s all about family, Easter egg hunts,

attending church and having fun but not this year. This year someone is missing and you don’t feel like joining in celebrations.

The reality is that what you are feeling right now is your “new normal”. You probably haven’t had someone die before so, like everything that is new, it's important to learn how to grieve in your own, unique way this Easter.

You might not feel like getting out of bed but you have children who want to celebrate Easter, the way they always have. This year do it diff erent. A way of doing this is to start sharing happy memories of your loved one.

Sharing these memories help to fi ll the empty space left by your loved one and to keep their memory alive.

Memories can be shared by:• Sitting around the table and telling stories• Flipping through scrapbooks/photos• Writing poetry • Drawing pictures and sharing their meaning• Showing movies of them• Making things for them• Writing letters to themDo whatever feels right for you. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT... HENRY FULTON PUBLIC SCHOOL?

As always, life is very busy at Henry Fulton Public School. We have had a great start to the new school year which has included welcoming all of our new students and their families to our school community.

Our new Kindergarten students are settling well into the school routine and are displaying great enthusiasm in all areas of school life. Students across the school are setting learning goals which they working very hard to achieve and are demonstrating a ‘love of learning’.

There are many exciting and educational activities planned for our students this term, including our annual swimming carnival, Stage 3 Camp, Harmony Day, National Young Leaders’ Day and other school activities.

Peri Peri Barbecue Chicken PizzaEasy • Time 50 min • Serves 4

Ingredients • 2 Red Capsicums• 70g (1/4 Cup) No-Fat Greek Yoghurt• 2 Garlic Cloves• 1 Long Red Chilli, Chopped• 1 Teaspoon Sweet Paprika• 1 Teaspoon Dried Oregano Leaves• 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice• 2 Teaspoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil• 400g Chicken Tenderloins• 1 Large Red Onion, Cut Into Thin Wedges• 2 Pizza Bases• 80g (1 Cup) Coarsely Grated Mainland Noble White

Reduced-Fat Cheddar• 1 Lebanese Cucumber, Seeded, Finely Chopped• Micro Coriander, To Serve

Method1. Preheat barbecue with hood on medium. Spray capsicums

with oil. Cook, turning, for 15-20 minutes or until charred. Place in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Stand for 5 minutes. Peel and deseed. Thickly slice 1 1/2 capsicums. Process other half in a food processor until smooth. Place in a bowl and stir in yoghurt. Season.

2. Meanwhile, process garlic, chilli, paprika and oregano until coarsely chopped. Add lemon juice and oil. Process until combined. Season. Transfer to a bowl and add chicken. Marinate for 10 minutes. Chargrill, turning, for 4-5 minutes or until cooked through. Slice and keep warm.

3. Spray onion with oil. Chargrill, turning, for 2-3 minutes until tender.

4. Place pizza bases on 2 baking trays. Sprinkle with cheese. Top with capsicum and onion. Barbecue, with hood closed, for 12-14 minutes or until base is crisp and cheese melts.

5. Top the pizzas with chicken, cucumber and coriander. Drizzle with capsicum yoghurt.

Happy Easter!Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time

We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caff eine, which when ingested by a

dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal.

If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fl uids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal.

There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure

that your pet has a safe Easter:

• Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet.

• Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate.• Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets.

Dogs have a good sense of smell and will fi nd chocolate in kid’s schoolbags!

• Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.

In the spirit of Easter what better way to brighten up the veterinary hospital, than to host a colouring in competition. All entries will be displayed on the walls of the veterinary hospital.
