From the EditorWhat a month it has been. As I sit here

compiling your latest community news, I can’t help but feel overwhelmingly proud of the amazing show of community spirit in recent weeks. Looking back, the situation was surreal but the devastation left behind, very real.

Like many of you, I too, know a number of people who suffered the loss of property and all possessions in the devastation of Thursday 17th October. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those that have suffered loss, and to all the incredibly amazing firefighters and volunteers who continue to fight for us every day. They say it’s going to be one of the worst summers in history for fires – if you haven’t already done so, make an action plan NOW!

On a lighter note, and to take your mind off the fires, we have a spectacular Pre- Christmas lift-out, full of various discounts and offers, to get you into the yuletide spirit! A great opportunity for you to get a head start on your Christmas shopping!

Not to mention the fantastic highlights we captured at the recent Lake Launch at Jordan Springs in October! If you missed the festivities on the day, check out our photo collage on page 7.

Next month we have lots in store for you with the upcoming launch of the Jordan Springs Shopping Centre! You won’t want to miss it! Available from 7th December.

Never get tired of doing little things for others; sometimes those little things occupy the biggest part of their hearts. Be prepared and stay safe! Want to deliver

‘Excites and Delights’ Coming to Jordan SpringsThe Touched by Olivia Foundation, in conjunction with Penrith City Council, are

proud to announce the construction of Livvi’s Place Penrith in Jordan Springs. The new project is due to be completed in early 2014.

The Touched by Olivia Foundation is a national charity that works with communities, corporations and all levels of government to create special places that include everyone, regardless of their age or abilities. These special places include Livvi’s Place. The inclusive playspaces cater for the needs of people with disabilities. “Our playspaces are built to excite and delight everyone, from babies up to the great grandparents. We reckon a Livvi's Place is an open invitation for the entire community and surrounding areas to get together and catch up, make new friends and experience play in an equitable environment“, said the Foundation’s Rebecca Ho.

Residents are invited to the ‘Butterfly BBQ’ on November 17 from 11am to 3pm in Jordan Springs (Corner Lakeside Parade and Jordan Springs Boulevard), organised by the Touched by Olivia Foundation. There will be a BBQ lunch, face painting, an ice cream station and the opportunity for people to discuss what they would like to see at the new Livvi’s Place.

“On the day, we will be getting the community to make some awesome art that will get installed into the playspace. If you can't make it, we're asking for input in the online survey. Businesses or groups can also sponsor the playspace”, explained Rebecca.

For further information, visit their website www.touchedbyolivia.com.au or their Facebook page at facebook.com/groups/livvisplacepenrith.

Bushfire Fundraiser For Christie and GraceKids Academy Preschool in Glenmore Park is looking to host a

major fundraising event within the next month in aid of Christie and Grace, their employees who recently lost their homes and everything inside them to the bushfires in the Blue Mountains.

Christie and Grace were at work when they got the call from their partners that the fires were close to their homes. Both their partners had been told that they were not able to get through and go back to their houses to get their belongings.

Christie’s partner Jake had seen a neighbour run through to get back to their place and attempted to do the same thing. As he was running, he collapsed from the smoke and was very lucky to flag down a car that was passing. The driver of the car stopped and took Jake up to the house to rescue their dog, which was lying in the laundry still alive. As Jake dragged the dog outside, he watched the lounge room go up in flames, as well as his beloved old Holden he had been working on.

Grace’s situation was much the same, however she lived with

her mum, step dad and sister and they also lost everything. Grace had animals at her house as well. Her dog was found in the neighbour’s yard and treated for a collapsed lung and smoke inhalation. Grace found only one of her cats the next morning when she went back to go through her house hoping to find whatever she could. It wasn’t until later that day that they found her second cat in the neighbour’s yard.

The fundraising event will raise much needed funds for Christie and Grace and to help them re-build their lives and also the NSW Rural Fire Service who have worked tirelessly to support the community in protecting homes. Kids Academy is asking for support from small businesses. They are looking for donations of items they can use for prizes / lucky door prizes, which will be given away on the night.

If you have or know of someone with a small business that may like to contribute donations to the night, please share and contact Chantelle on (02) 4733 2449 at Kids Academy Preschool for more information.

Diane O’Neill – Blue Dragon BooksDiane and Mark O’Neill

opened the doors of their Glenbrook store back in June 2008, and they haven’t looked back.

The Emu Plains couple have been collecting books for many years and were trading on-line for a while prior to opening the shop.

Glenbrook was the perfect choice of location, firstly due to the tourist trade, but primarily because Blue Mountains people are big on reading.

It could be said the “blue” was named after the mountains, but it also

happens to be Diane’s favourite colour. And yes, Diane has a fascination with dragons. Hence the name, and quite befitting of the shop with arguably the best fantasy range in the Mountains.

Blue Dragon stocks a wide selection of authors and titles. Fiction sales have declined, largely due to the increased popularity of e-readers. However many older titles are not available in the e-book format, and so second-hand book stores are able to maintain appeal, exhibiting strong growth in the non-fiction and collectables categories.

“The Dragon” has a growing range of collector’s editions and a growing clientele searching for antiquarian books. The discerning reader will always find something of interest at Blue Dragon, and Diane and Mark are very good at sourcing rare titles. They have more and more people coming in looking for beautiful old books simply for decorating.

Diane takes delight in watching customers come into the shop with their children and instilling that love of books into the children from a very early age. She has witnessed many a small child grow out of the toddler section and work their way up to the teen fiction shelves and beyond.

A credit system is available at Blue Dragon, whereby Diane is happy to look at your pre-loved collection and offer a shop credit in exchange for any good quality titles.

With Christmas just around the corner, why not call in to Blue Dragon for some fabulous gift ideas (see the Christmas Lift-out for your special discount). Gift vouchers are available and you can complete your purchase with a selection of beautiful handmade book marks and cards.

PREPARE. ACT. SURVIVE.The message from the RFS is loud

and clear – Prepare Yourself. Any past complacency should, in light of recent events, have been well and truly eradicated, and the RFS urges everyone to get ready for more fire. Preparation is not just about cleaning up around the house and having a plan. It is also about making sure you consider your physical, mental and emotional preparedness.

A bush fire can be a terrifying situation. Strong gusty winds, intense heat and flames will make you tired quickly. Thick, heavy smoke will sting your eyes and choke your lungs. It will be difficult to see and breathe. The roaring sound of the fire approaching will deafen you. Embers will rain down, causing spot fires all around you. Power and water may be cut off. You may be isolated. It will be dark, noisy and extremely physically and mentally demanding.

If you have any doubts about your ability to cope, you should plan to Leave Early.

Go to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au for comprehensive information about fires burning around the area, and to download your Bushfire Survival Plan.

Christians really do look like hypocrites. As people who say they follow God, the fact that we fail certainly looks like we are a bunch of hypocrites. This would be true if the Bible didn’t also say that no one is perfectly good. Ask a Christian whether they are a sinner, and they will admit that they are. A Christian

knows that they are just like everyone else. Thank God that He is willing to save anyone, and especially sinners.

Who is God willing to forgive? Anyone who will admit that they do bad things but want to follow God. Christians are people who want to do what God wants, but continue to struggle to make it happen. This is great news. No matter what you have done, no matter how bad it is, God will forgive you if you are willing to admit it and are ready to put God back in control.Rev Andrew Kukulka

Jordan Springs Residents are Great Recyclers!Council’s ‘Do the Right Bin’ team have been out and about in

Jordan Springs to help residents recycle right. This team of women have been talking to many Jordan Springs households to help families understand what can and cannot be recycled in the green organics and yellow recycling bins. The team has left its mark on the community with many smiley-faced thank you tags left on bins throughout the suburb, thanking residents who recycle right.

Households who have been doing a great job recycling were entered into the monthly prize draw of SITA’s Green Bin Rewards Program. The lucky September winner was the Myers family of Jordan Springs who won a $100 Westfield gift voucher thanks SITA Australia, Councils organic waste contractor. Mr Myers said “it pays to keep your green bin clean” and was thrilled with his unexpected prize.

Food and garden vegetation collected from the green organics bin is recycled into compost. Paper, bottles, cans, jars, and other recyclables from the yellow recycling bin are recycled and turned into new products. When households place the right things in the

right bin it helps reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and help keep waste costs low for residents. You can help recycle right by keeping plastic bags out of the green and yellow lidded recycling bins.

Council has a team of friendly staff to help answer your recycling enquiries. For help with what goes into what bin, or to discuss your household waste service options, please call 4732 7615.

The entire country is still reeling from the shock of the recent fires that swept devastation over much of the state. Our thoughts and prayers go out to every person and animal affected by the fires. Tragedies like this bring together a strong community spirit, as collectively we take stock and rebuild our lives, and regain a sense of normality.

A hot, dry summer was predicted, but it came as a shock to many when a fire sparked, and was driven down the mountains at lightning speed and with hurricane force, leaving a trail of destruction on Thursday 17th October.

More of the dangerous weather conditions are to come. Australia is expected to experience hotter and drier conditions this spring and summer as a weak El Niño pattern develops across the Pacific Ocean.

This is in stark contrast to the past two years, where La Niña conditions dominated, contributing to heavy rainfall and cooler temperatures across much of the country. And while we may have enjoyed it at the time, this has caused increased vegetation growth, which is now drying in the hot winds to become fuel for further bushfires.

El Niño in force! Vigilance Required over the Hot Dry Summer!

On November 1st each year a service is dedicated to “All Saints”. In the Scriptures a saint is a person who has been baptized and believes in Jesus Christ. Gradually from the time of the Resurrection the title saint was gradually delegated to recognize a person who was considered to be

exemplary in the Christian way of life. Today the Roman Catholic Church for instance, delegates the title to persons in the process known as canonization.

All Saints Day has an interesting history. Around 200 years CE, Saint Gregory who lived in Pontus in what was known as Asia Minor, observed a festival known as All Martyrs. Saint Chrysostom [who died in 407 CE] refers also to this festival. The Greek Orthodox Church observes on the second Sunday after Pentecost [the granting of God’s Spirit to the early followers of Christ and considered to be the ‘birthday’ of the Church] a Sunday for All Saints.

In the latter part of the 8th century All Saints day was held in churches throughout England and also in Ireland, France and Germany. Some historians consider that the festival originated in Ireland and that it spread to England and finally to other countries. Pope Gregory 4th encouraged Louis, the then Emperor of what was known as the Holy Roman Empire, to set November 1st for the festival. It was agreed to in 835 CE and

continues to this day.It is noteworthy that in Scripture the word saint is not used in

relation to personal character [ although today people will refer to someone as ‘being a saint’] or to any special group or class of Christian believers. In the Anglican Prayer Book the Collect for “All Saints” [a prayer that summaries belief ] was composed in 1549 and it is characterized by the fact that it expresses belief in the total concept of the Church: the visible, i.e.: the living and the invisible, i.e the dead. The basic theme is based on the teaching of Saint Paul with his conception of the Church as being the Body of Christ. In the Anglican Prayer Book, the use of the term ‘mystical body of the Son’ is used three times while in the Communion Service it is defined as ‘the blessed company of all faithful people’.

The Collect is one that can be used everyday in prayer:“We praise you heavenly Father that you have knit together

your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord.

Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those that love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord”

In August, 16 dedicated, enthusiastic and caring volunteers opened the doors to a new senior’s social club for the Penrith/Nepean Community.

At a Public Meeting hosted by the Penrith RSL sub-Branch in June, a unanimous decision was made to establish a Day Club in the Penrith/Nepean area. The Penrith RSL sub-Branch who sponsors the Day Club wanted to help reduce social isolation among older people who may be frail, or may just have trouble getting out and about.

Penrith RSL sub-Branch President, Neville Barnier said the Day Club program meets the aims and objectives of the RSL in providing assistance to older members of our community, beyond the normal ex-service support we give. Whilst our main focus is looking after the welfare of our own members, we believed the resources of the RSL and our sub-Branch could be put to the extra benefit of assisting older non-ex service people in our community. We have received great support from RSL NSW Headquarters and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (NSW) who provided their knowledge and training to get us up and running, Mr Barnier said.

The new Day Club is a self-funded, not for profit program. Day Clubs are entirely run by volunteers with the support of the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA),

NSW Office and the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) (NSW Branch).

There are 72 Day Clubs across NSW, and while their focus is veterans, they are open to everyone, not just the ex-service community. Day Clubs provide social opportunities and activities

for older people who are still living at home, but who are unable to attend more active community programs. They also provide volunteers with numerous opportunities to help out, learn new skills, make friends, and make a difference to the lives of others.

The new Nepean Valley Day Club will meet each Wednesday from 10am-2pm in the Salvation Army Hall at Glenmore Park. Each week the volunteers will provide participants with a varied, fun-filled program

including gentle exercise, mental stimulation, leisure activities, guest speakers and entertainment, as well as morning tea and lunch - all for a nominal contribution. Transport may also be provided.

If you have an interest in joining as a participant, or you wish to offer your support as a volunteer, or you just want to know more, please give us a call! We would love to have you join us! For more information, phone Jan Eaton on 4704 8506 or Noelene Simmonds on 4735 1435.

Complacency is the Enemy! One thing that is apparent to me on a

daily basis is that most people rarely review their financial products and often have inappropriate mortgages, insurance and Superannuation policies simply because, once

in place they never review the product again.Financial planners should drive this process, and to some extent

they do encourage people to review their financial products, but often do not chase this as hard as possible. Therefore it is necessary for us to ensure our product is still appropriate for use.

A number of factors result in our financial products becoming out-dated. The first and most obvious, our circumstances change, of course if our circumstances change the product we have is designed to suit our previous situation, and may no longer be relevant. Therefore when your situation changes it is necessary to review your insurance, superannuation and mortgage.

Products improve over time, Superannuation funds and insurance policies that were once considered quality, will eventually be surpassed by more modern products, these products are often cheaper as well as offering superior features. Much in the same way as a flat screen TV from the early 2000’s is now considered poor quality and expensive.

Further to this introductory rates and alike can make some mortgages and insurance policies initially very attractive, but less so down the track. This makes reviewing doubly important, once the introductory rates expire, the existing policy is probably too expensive, further to this there is likely to be a new introductory offer that can be used to your advantage.

Virtually every client I see that has not reviewed either their insurance, Superannuation or mortgage in the previous 2 years is usually in the wrong product. In most cases they are paying more in fees, interest payments or insurance premiums than they should be, and furthermore almost always have inferior features.

The best news is though, under almost all circumstances there is no cost to review these products, a financial advisor, bank or mortgage broker will almost always happily review these for you as it is likely to result in more revenue for them and they will not be able to make changes unless you are better off, there is literally only an upside for you, yet most of us do not regularly review our situation.

It is very sound advice to review your Insurance, Mortgage and Superannuation annually. If you have not reviewed your financial products recently please contact Future Financial Service on 4727 6588 or 0414 330 651 for our assistance.

NOTE: You may recall that last month’s sibling conflict article was to be continued this month. Due to problems arising from the bushfires, the second part of the sibling conflict article will now be in the December issue, so keep an eye out next month. Apologies.

In her 1995 Boyer Lecture titled “A Truly Civil Society”, Dr Eva Cox, an Australian sociologist and social commentator, said that our homes can be the most toxic places for our children. She said that it was an indictment on our society that children are sometimes safer with kind strangers in early childhood services and schools than they are with family.

One of the ways of creating a safe emotional environment is to make your home a “be kind zone”. In this zone, no-one, including the adults, call each other names or tease each other. No put-downs are allowed.

This has worked very well at my place with three boys. They rarely call each other names or tease each other, but if it happens they say “that’s a put-down and that’s not allowed”. It has also made them more assertive and resilient outside the home. They don’t accept put-downs or teasing from other people.

My boys were watching the movie “Parental Guidance” during the recent school holidays. They told me that in one scene a little boy said “that’s a put-down, you owe me three put-ups” to which his sibling replied “I like your shirt, I like your shoes, I like your hair”. My boys loved this. They changed “put-ups” to “pull-ups” and made it a rule that the pull-ups had to be genuine, related to the skills and personal attributes of the person.

We all make mistakes in relationships, and sometimes our tempers or frustrations get the better of us and we say things that are less than kind. When there is a rupture in the relationship, it’s important that we focus on repairing the relationship. This is done in many different ways, and for children put-ups or pull-ups is a good way of repairing the relationship and re-establishing an emotionally safe environment.

There was a bit of controversy in the Locksmith industry over the last couple of weeks, when a Television show decided to check if Locksmiths were doing the ethical and honest thing while attending to a “Lockout”. I’ll be the first to admit that there are some Cowboys in the industry that will cut corners, but there are also a lot of Locksmiths that do things correctly.

For peace of mind when requiring a Locksmith service, here are some things that you should check before allowing them to carry out any work;1. Do they carry a current 2BC Security Licence?2. Are they Fully Insured? 3. Are they in a sign written van and in a Locksmith uniform?4. Before the Locksmith carries out a “Lockout” service, have they asked you for your identification to prove that you live there?

Like any trade, the Locksmith industry does have a Governing body called the “Master Locksmith Association of Australia”. Locksmiths that are Members of the MLAA have gone thru extensive training and have to complete a theory and practical test to prove that they are of the highest level in the Locksmith industry. To check if the Locksmith you have called is part of the MLAA, you can check via their website http://www.masterlocksmiths.com.au/

Another tip is to always get any Security product (Deadlocks, Window Locks, Safes etc) supplied and installed by a Locksmith only. They are trained to provide the correct product for your application and install these correctly and carry the Licenses to do so.

CHRISTMAS LIFT OUT www.districtgazette.com.au www.districtgazette.com.au CHRISTMAS LIFT OUT

The French gave the biggest Christmas present ever in 1886. It was the Statue of Liberty, and they gave it to the United States of America. (The French have one too, a smaller one, in Paris.)

Santa Claus was a real Saint. He lived in Myra in the 300s. Myra is in what’s now Turkey. The German name for Saint Nicholas is Sankt Niklaus.

The first artificial Christmas Tree wasn’t a tree at all. It was created out of goose feathers that were dyed.

Christmas has many, many names. Do you know some of them—aside from, of course, Christmas? How about? Sheng Tan Kuai Loh (China), or Hauskaa Joulua (Finland), or Joyeux Noel (France)? In Wales, it’s Nadolig Llawen, and in Sweden, God Jul.

“Xmas” stems from Greece. The Greek “X” is a symbol for Christ.

Riga, Latvia was home to the first decorated Christmas tree. The year was 1510. About 36 million Christmas trees are produced each year on Christmas tree farms.

Reserve 5 gingerbread squares for the bases. Use a pastry brush to paint a thin layer of chocolate over the back of the remaining squares. Set aside until set.4. Beat the egg white in a bowl until foamy. Gradually beat in icing sugar For a gift to eat, box and all, make the season’s classic spice-scented sweet into a parcel filled with goodies. and lemon juice until a firm icing forms (if it’s too runny, add more sugar)5. Re-melt the remaining chocolate and spoon into a piping bag fitted with a 5mm nozzle. Place 1 reserved gingerbread base on a clean work surface. Use chocolate to join 2 sides to base. Spoon a little of the melted chocolate onto the top of each cake pop, allowing it to run down the sides slightly. Sprinkle with silver cachous to decorate. Return to polystyrene to set completely.

How to avoid stuffing the wrong turkey! On Christmas Day, sample the food, rather than stuff yourself silly, and deal quickly with any leftovers. People often get through Christmas unscathed, but come undone when faced with the pavlova in the fridge the next day. Send leftovers home with guests, or freeze leftovers in small portions.

From the Principal’s DeskLlandilo Public School Principal:

Bruno ZulianiWeather conditions over the last few weeks have caused

disruption to our usual recess and lunchtime routines. Smoke and heat have contributed to significant time being spent indoors. Thankfully students and staff have coped brilliantly. The devastating results of fires have impacted many friends and

family of our school community and our thoughts go out to those who are suffering and recovering. Through a fundraising mufti (non uniform day) we were able to raise $400 which was forwarded to the victim’s fire appeal initiative. We are very fortunate at Llandilo Public School to have a very active Rural Fire Brigade Service opposite our site which makes us all feel very safe indeed.

Two very special events occur during the month of November at our school. The Stage 3 Mini Fete and the overnight Zoo Snooze excursion for our Stage 2 students.

New enrolments for 2014 are now being taken, come along and join our friendly learning community.

Put The Spotlight On An Outstanding Australian

If you admire someone for making a difference to the Penrith community, then nominate them for a 2014 Australia Day Award. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Penrith City Council’s annual Australia Day Awards are the perfect occasion to honour the everyday heroes whose outstanding contributions might otherwise go unrecognised.

“These awards allow Council to hold up Penrith residents as model Australians and highlight their stories and efforts to help others,” he said.

To receive this prestigious honour winners should demonstrate excellence in their field and be considered inspirational role models for the community.

The awards will highlight excellence across categories including citizen of the year, young citizen of the year, sportsperson of the year and community services. One nomination is all it takes for your hero to be in contention.

Visit penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/ausday and send us your nomination before 12 November 2013.

New Website Puts Local Galleries & Museums On the Map Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres MP welcomes the announcement that museums

and galleries in the Penrith area will feature on an innovative website from Museums and Galleries NSW, funded by the NSW Government.

Penrith Museum of Printing, Arms of Australia Inn, Museum of Fire and Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest are all featured on the new website.

“This is terrific news for visitors to Penrith and it is also a great resource for locals to access details of Museums and Galleries in our area” said Mr Ayres.

• The new Museums and Galleries NSW website will display information on the range of collections, events and activities at museums, galleries and Aboriginal cultural centres across the State. It can be found at www.mgnsw.org.au. • Museums and Galleries are vital assets for regional communities, and this website will help attract visitors by synchronising information about their location, hours and upcoming exhibitions.• This is just one way in which the NSW Government is supporting museums and galleries across the State. The Government also provides a range of grants, and funding for fellowships and mentoring which are administered by Museums and Galleries NSW.• The new website will make it easier for visitors to plan their trip, and features regional breakdowns for potential visitors looking to see what is on at local galleries and museums during their stay.• People using the site will be able to create trip itineraries and share their experiences via social networks. The site will also use geo-location technology and be mobile friendly, so people can find a gallery, museum or Aboriginal cultural centre nearby.

Minister for the Arts, George Souris said the website is part of the Government’s commitment to arts and culture in NSW, in acknowledgment of the very important role the museums sector plays in the cultural, creative, social and economic development.

Arts NSW is the NSW Government’s arts policy and funding body – www.arts.nsw.gov.au. Museums and Galleries is the leading agency for regional, community and public museums and galleries in NSW – www.mgnsw.org.au.

LOOKING GOOD & FEELING GREAT Even though eating breakfast has

long been linked to good health and a nutritious diet, skipping it may seem like an easy way to cut kilojoules when trying to lose weight. A growing body of research, however, indicates that eating breakfast is a successful strategy for lasting weight loss.

Breakfast Skipping and ObesityBreakfast eaters tend to weigh less than breakfast skippers.

Some studies have found that those who skip breakfast end up eating more kilojoules through the course of the day compared to those who don’t - and weight gain is the result. This may be due to increased feelings of hunger which can lead to overeating, particularly higher-fat foods later in the day.

Therefore, eating breakfast may help to control appetite and lower the chances of overeating throughout the day.

Eating Breakfast and Maintaining Weight Loss Eating breakfast may also help with keeping weight off for

the long term. Participants from the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), a database of people who have lost at least 13 kilos and kept if off for one year or more, reported eating breakfast on a regular basis as one of their key strategies for maintaining weight loss. Of the 2,959 participants surveyed from the NWCR, 78% had breakfast 7 days a week and only 4% said that they never ate breakfast. The researchers suggested that eating breakfast may help to reduce hunger later in the day as well as provide key nutrients that may enhance physical activity, another key strategy for maintaining weight loss.

Type of Breakfast

The type of breakfast and its influence on weight management is an active area of research. Some studies have shown that eating ready-to-eat cereal is linked to a lower body mass index (BMI) and better diet quality than eating other breakfast foods. However, a 2005 study found that participants who consumed a high protein breakfast had enhanced feelings of eating satisfaction, fullness and lower food intake compared with those eating a low-protein breakfast. More research is needed to determine the impact of breakfast type on weight loss.

The Bottom LineMaking breakfast part of a daily routine is a key strategy to

use as part of a lifestyle management approach for long-term, sustainable weight loss.

The Petbarn Foundation has set up a NSW Bush Fire Appeal for pets and wildlife in need.

At the time of going to print, fires were still blazing across New South Wales. Petbarn has thrown its support behind RSPCA NSW and has launched a NSW Bush Fire Appeal through its charity arm, The Petbarn Foundation, to help animals affected by the bush fires.

Petbarn and RSPCA NSW are calling out to the community get behind the appeal and help raise funds for animals affected by bush fires. To kick-start the appeal, The Petbarn Foundation has donated $10,000, which will go directly to RSPCA NSW.

Australians can now make a donation to the NSW Bush Fire Appeal in Petbarn stores across the country or at http://www.petbarn.com.au/bushfire-appeal with 100% of funds collected by The Petbarn Foundation being donated directly to RSPCA NSW.

“The bush fires have been devastating for people across the state with more than 100 fires reported, many people losing their homes and fears of lives being lost. At this time, many animals have also been affected. We want to offer support to those people who have pets that have been caught in the disaster, as well the many animals and wildlife that have been lost in the fires,” said Paul Wilson, Director of The Petbarn Foundation.

RSPCA NSW is part of the NSW’s Government’s emergency response team. Currently, RSPCA Inspectors are working across the state to evacuate pets and livestock and transporting sick and

injured animals to shelters and vet clinics where they will receive immediate attention. The RSPCA Call Centre is also at capacity fielding calls from owners in desperate need of assistance and generous supporters offering help.

“Our Inspectors are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of companion animals, livestock and wildlife impacted by bushfires across the state,” said Steve Coleman, CEO of RSPCA NSW.

“We are unbelievably grateful for the Petbarn Foundation’s generous offer of support — and support from the community — during this particularly challenging time,” he said.

The RSPCA’s job won’t stop when the fires are under control. The organisation has an ongoing commitment to all the wildlife, pets and livestock that need prolonged medical attention and care. After the fires have stopped, the Inspectors will go back into the field to look for survivors and assist owners with treatment, food and shelter for their misplaced animals.

Caring for our Wildlife – Training Course

The Blue Mountains WIRES branch covers the area from Lithgow to the St Mary’s area. A recent information session in October discussed what it really means to become a part of WIRES, what people can expect and what WIRES expect from their members.

Following the information session, WIRES is running a Rescue and Immediate Care Course (RICC) this month. The RICC is a mandatory training course for all people who wish to become members of WIRES. The course runs over two days on Saturday and Sunday 9th and 10th November, at the Grace Tooth Dining Hall at the Mid Mountains Community Centre, 7 New St, Lawson. The times for both days are 8.30 am til 4.30 pm.

The cost of the course is $90 which covers membership fees and course material. BYO lunch, but we will provide tea, coffee, morning and afternoon tea.

For more information or if you have any questions, you can ring our Chair Person Val Chew, on 0405 140 011.

Beware of MagpiesWith the change of season residents are urged to beware of

magpies nesting in their midst.Penrith councillor Mark Davies said magpies nest at this

time of year, changing their normal placid behaviour.“Spring is a great time to enjoy some of the fantastic outdoor

recreational facilities in our City and soak up our beautiful natural environment. It’s also when birds become more active in the warmer weather so take care in green spaces such as parks, reserves or backyards,” Cr Davies said.

“Spring is when nesting magpies are protective of their young and tend to swoop on people walking underneath.

“This can be dangerous for small children so be sure to keep an eye on them when out and about.

“By keeping out of wildlife’s way and leaving them be they’ll generally do the same for us,” he said.

If a resident feels that a magpie is a menace they can contact the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service on 1300 361 967 or Council on 4732 7777. You can also refer to the Magpies page on the NSW Evironment and Heritage webpage: environment.n s w . g o v . a u / a n i m a l s /TheAustralianMagpie.htm(02) 4773 8888
