DESCRIPTION

After completing the initial year, I4MS has hosted its first public international event on 18th June in Berlin, in cooperation with the launch of the German manufacturing programme, “Autonomik für Industrie 4.0". I4MS has brought together more than 150 professionals from industry and innovation, who have attended to several presentations about what has been achieved by I4MS and further funding opportunities for SMEs and middle size corporates (mid-caps) under the Initiative. The event signified the importance of SMEs in Europe’s manufacturing industry and their role in the reindustrialisation process for Europe. At a glance: SMEs are providers of around 45% of manufacturing added value and roughly 59% of employment in the manufacturing sector.

FCPS general idea

I4MS: FOSTERING DIGITAL INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION IN EUROPE

Mainly two types of CIGS-based flexible modules:- Developed onto a transparent polymeric substrate,- or onto a thin metal sheet.

While the first case does not differ much from the devices deposited on glass and for this technology the scribing is performed by passing the laser beam through the glass (the current technology uses laser in the ns or ps regime with wavelength in the IR) in the second case this can not occur because the substrate is not transparent.

In this last case, the main issue is to carry out the scribing without any thermal damage of the films that form the active layers in such a way to not put in electrical short-circuit the p/njunction.

The best results are obtained with picosecond lasers with a wavelength in the green, but good results can also be obtained with wavelengths in the IR.

Regarding the TRL of the equipment developed, we plan to pass from a TRL 6 to a TRL 7.

FCPS general idea

Objectives:

To demonstrate the possibility to achieve the three scribe patterning steps P1, P2 and P3 on thin film CIGS solar cells:

For P1, to remove Molybdenum at a speed higher than 2 m/s, width of lines of 50 μm. Isolation of the two halves of the Mo layer after a scribe.

For P2, removing CIGS without removing the Mo layer. Width of 40-50 μm. In parallel to P1 at a distance of 50 μm. Transverse resistivity must be in the range of a few MOhms.

For P3, removing the top TCO layer on CIGS. Very high process speed. Has to be aligned to P1 and P2, at 50 μm from P2.

The total lost width due to scribing will not be larger than 250 μm.
