JOTTINGS August 2018

Here we are with the second issue of JOTTINGS already; doesn’t time fly. Our opening edition appears to have been well received and we hope to develop the format as time goes on.

In this issue we lead with the state of play as regards Amber Valley’s current work to finalise its Local Plan. Individual planning applications will never feature in JOTTINGS (they are included on the Parish web site) but the bigger picture

will, occasionally, as it affects the Parish. Also included; Hazelwood Quiet Lane initiative; a parishioner’s mountainous effort in the Himalayas and a pictorial revue of the recent Annual Church Fete.

Please do comment on content and keep suggestions coming as regards relevant and interesting topics which you would like to have considered for future issues. Our Parish Clerk awaits any such contact. Please note her new email address;

‘LOCAL PLAN’ INSPECTOR CALLS FOR GREEN

Looking South to Duffield, from the foot of Hazelwood Hill, over Green Belt land.

We are reliably informed that AVBC are at the Hearing part of the examination for the Council’s Five year supply of new housing. It seems there may still be doubts as to assumptions being made regarding projected completions. As a result, the Inspector has called for a comprehensive Green

Belt Review to help identify possible additional sites, ensuring the Plan hits the total originally envisaged. Hopefully, the effect on Hazelwood Parish will be zero as, largely, we are not within the

Green Belt. A small section nudges up to the foot of Hazelwood Hill (as above). Neither is the Parish identified as being a key contributor to numbers, other than via individual applications. We await further developments – no pun intended!

ANYONE FOR TENNIS? The tennis court, in fine fettle, awaiting new members.

Interested in playing tennis? Wondered how to get access to the under-used tennis court on our lovely playing field? Mark Bowler, who lives in Farnah Green, is managing the court and has recently installed a new net and updated the padlock. Access to the court (supply of a key) is provided by Mark. An annual membership costs a very reasonable £30 for a family or £12.50 for an individual. Please make the most of this great village facility. Who knows, Wimbledon may beckon. Hope to see you there!

A bit of a ‘do’? The Memorial Hall could fit the bill

Due to retirements and other factors, the Memorial Hall now has slots in its booking diary during the week and at weekends.

Whether it’s for a regular club activity such as keep-fit, crafts, indoor sports or a one-off social gathering, using the Hall is well worth looking into. The excellent kitchen facilities have been complemented by a recent central heating upgrade. Car parking can also be extended by arrangement to suit individual situations. Why not contact our Parish Clerk, Laura Storey, to discuss possibilities.

30mph ‘SLOW’ to be exact! So where are we with Hazelwood Quiet Lane?

*Traffic survey data now gathered.

* Most vehicles are currently driving at up to 40mph. Our voluntary up to 30mph will make a difference. *The ‘Hazelwood Quiet Lane’ signs have been ordered, as per example.

*Deploying the signs awaits DCC but it should be soon. Let’s all start the 30mph right away and make the Parish safer. VVVVVVVV

Hazelwood to the Himalayas As if living on Hazelwood Hill wasn’t steep enough, parishioner Darren Barker, nevertheless, decided to use our local topography to his advantage.

Along with two colleagues, Anthony Stevenson and Ian Bailey from his firm, Clarke International Ltd, Darren decided to trek to Everest base camp At 5,364 m. This 14 day/100 miles trek required no little training. Hazelwood, downhill to Duffield and back up featured a lot, combining this with walking the

dog and carrying one of his young daughters on his back! As a special incentive, four year old daughter, Chelsea, promised Dad that ‘if I made it up the big mountain, I could have her swimming badge’. Commenting on the achievement, Darren said, ‘It was the hardest trek I have ever done and colleagues Anthony and Ian also found it very challenging. Nepal is a poor country and it certainly made us appreciate a lot we take for granted when back at home.

CHURCH FETE SCORES DESPITE THE ODDS! Despite the unfortunate scheduling of the England/Croatia football match, the Hazelwood Church Fete met the challenge magnificently.

Opening the fete was Lubrizol boss, Simon Griffiths who also showed his Porche, as part of the classic cars display.

Music was provided by the prize winning BM&W (Brassington, Middleton and Wirksworth) brass band.

Vanessa Millar’s dance group and Woody’s Wings also entertained.

Two views of the magnificent classic cars display – always a central feature.

Fete Organisers, John and Eileen Chadwick, tell us that, once again and football notwithstanding, the fete was a financial success. Mission accomplished!

As ever, the fete was the result of a real combined Parish effort and thanks are due to all who contributed to the event.

RED KITE SPOTTING? This library shot shows what to look out for.

After numerous mentions of this magnificent bird frequenting the Parish, even our keen bird twitcher Chairman hasn’t managed to capture this elusive resident, photographically. Please keep your eyes peeled and cameras at the ready and send us the result for inclusion in the next issue of

JOTTINGS – and not just Red Kites.

YUK - BAG IT AND BIN IT!

Blackbrook cats-eyes – down for the count. We have begun to collect traffic noise data from the A517 at Blackbrook, and have established data points for the roadside noise from HGV'S, cars and other typical vehicles. This needs to be repeated from inside a local property. It may be that we will buy a basic, programmable meter to support this and also to study the noise variation of the differing cats-eye designs and fitted heights in the area. A parishioner is helping with this study which will resume when holidays permit.
