Luke’s Infancy Narratives of John the Baptist and Our Lord, Jesus Christ contain three hymns: Songs of Zechariah (The Benedictus 1:67-79), Mary (The Magnificat 1:46-55) and Simeon (The Nunc Dimittis 2: 29-32). They are included in theLiturgy of the Hours in morningprayer, evening prayer and nightprayer respectively. The Magnificatis Mary’s words of praise of God forhis marvellous works. It containselements of Hannah ‘s Song (1 Sam2:1-10) but is more personal withGod looking upon her and sheexulting her Saviour. Themes areGod’s help to the lowly and hiscommitment to his people. Focus on the Readings The first reading imagery of the dragon may deter some readers and listeners, yet the passage from Apocalypse presents an image of the new Eve destined to bring the Saviour into the world and for herself, God has prepared a place of safety. Indeed heaven is a place of safety, victory and honour. Mary, the bearer of the incarnate God is honoured for her role. The second reading proclaims the new Adam, Christ who has done away with death and brings, in order, those who belong and believe in him, to enjoy the same reward and dignity. Mary, the first Christian, is first in order to receive the reward and honour of eternal life. The Gospel contains the Magnificat (see opposite) in context of Mary meeting with Elizabeth. Her visit is both very human, to help with Elizabeth’s time to give birth, and very spiritual in her greeting and song of praise. Mary embraces all with her humility and honour and God’s mercy and promise. We, too, “proclaim the greatness of the Lord!”

Notes on the Feast The Feast of the Assumption of Mary is the oldest exclusively Marian celebration in the liturgical calendar dating from the 430’s. While the belief in Mary’s entry into heaven body and soul preceded this feast, the dogma was only defined in the Apostolic Constitution of Pope Pius XII “Munificentissimus Deus” 1st November 1950. Mary under this title is the patron saint of France, Paraguay, Jamaica, South Africa, New Zealand and New Caledonia nations and French airman and soldier of Paraguay, plus many churches, schools and cathedrals and the Basilica within the Kremlin in Moscow. The feast is celebrated in the Western and Eastern Catholic churches and Orthodox churches where the feast is called the Dormition of the Theotokos.

On the Lighter Side King Louis XIII of France instituted 15 August as a national holiday in honour of Mary. Since 1638 Masses and processions have marked this day. In more secular times the holiday still continues with well attended Masses, parades, family meals, sports events, bonfires and fireworks.

Mary Mackillop Rosaries – Purchase at discounted prices until 31 August Last year the Aid to the Church in Need commissioned a commemorative set of rosary beads for the 10th anniversary of the canonisation of Saint Mary of the Cross Mackillop. The rosaries were very popular and this is an opportunity for those who missed out to order them as we approach the feast of Mary Mackillop. Please note that orders will close Tuesday 31 August. CHANGE TO MASS TIMES COMMENCING SEPTEMBER

Commencing Saturday 4th September and Sunday 5th September, the times for Mass will be altered and Saturday Mass will be celebrated on alternate weeks. Details are as follows: 1st and 3rd Saturday of the Month at 6:00 pm Every Sunday 10:00 am

Our Planned Giving

Each November is the start of the Planned Giving Program. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who is part of our Planned Giving Program. As you know our Parish relies on the generosity of our parishioners to cover all our expenses. The only income we receive is from the planned giving, weekly collections, stole fee and the odd donation.

COVID has impacted every one of us in so many different ways and for many people it has been difficult financially and emotionally. How has it impacted our parish? Overall our income is down 30% compared to our last non-COVID year, but our expenses have remained the same. Last year when we were getting government support and support from the Chancery managed to cover all our expenses. This coming year maybe more difficult, but with Gods Blessings we will manage.

The positive is that the rent from the CEO for the Convent is covering our loan repayments and the interest on the loan. We are also able to put aside a small amount each month for maintenance work that will be required from time to time. In addition to the loan we took for the Convent, we also spent all our reserves we had in the bank on the renovation.

If you are not already part of our Planned Giving Program, please consider becoming part of the program. If you are already part of the program, it would be wonderful if you could manage to increase your gift even by a little bit. Every little bit helps our Parish, even $1 a week can make difference.

Simply put form in an envelope and put it into the collection plate next week or drop it into the office next Wednesday. Mary will make contact with you to organise your gift.
