The St. Francis of Assisi Community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

MORSELS & TIDBITS FROM OUR PASTOR
Sunday gospel in everyday English The Pharisees, along with some religious scholars who had come from Jerusalem, gathered around him. They noticed that some of his disciples weren’t being careful with ritual washings before meals. The Pharisees—Jews in general, in fact—would never eat a meal without going through the motions of a ritual hand-washing, with an especially vigorous scrubbing if they had just come from the market. The Pharisees and religious scholars asked, “Why do your disciples flout the rules, showing up at meals without washing their hands?” Jesus answered, “Isaiah was right about frauds like you, hit the bull’s-eye in fact: These people make a big show of saying the right thing, but their heart isn’t in it. They act like they are worshiping me, but they don’t mean it. They just use me as a cover for teaching whatever suits their fancy, Ditching God’s command and taking up the latest fads.” Jesus called the crowd together again and said, “Listen now, all of you— take this to heart. It’s not what you swallow that pollutes your life; it’s what you vomit—that’s the real pollution. Obscenities, lusts, thefts, murders, adulteries, greed, depravity, decep-tive dealings, carousing, mean looks, slander, arrogance, foolishness—all these are vomit from the heart. There is the source of your pollution” (from Mark 7). Notes on the Scripture In the gospel Jesus found himself in the kind of conflict that would eventually acceler-ate into his Passion: Going against the deeply held beliefs of influential people. He and his disciples not only violated the traditional religious practices regarding eating and other matters of purity, but Jesus turned the whole episode into a stinging rebuke of the hypocrisy of his critics. No matter how hard you tried, he said, following the rules did not make you pure and righteous if your heart were elsewhere. The practices of religion are not unimportant, but have you ever let observing them substitute for true faith? Do your outer actions reflect what’s really going on inside? Personal Updates Thank you for your continuing support and prayers. My mom is feeling better and is able to walk again. Her foot is healing but being diabetic it will be a process. Lots is happening at the parish and it is difficult to be away missing so much, but I am com-ing back on September 8th, so just a little longer. COVID-19 Requirements Updates As expected, Suburban Cook County announced that face coverings are required in all indoor public spaces for all people over the age of 2, regardless of vaccination status. Therefore, masks are now required indoors for all clergy, staff, volunteers and parishioners inside archdiocesan facilities, including Masses, liturgies and all activities/events within our parishes. Yours in Christ, Fr. Artur Sowa
