About the awardThe New York City Bar Association Diversity Champion Award, createdin 2006, seeks to applaud individuals whose actions and activitiesembody the Statement of Diversity Principles. Diversity champions arecritical to creating lasting change in organizations and establishingan inclusive environment within the workplace and within the overallNew York legal community.
CriteriaThis award recognizes individuals who champion the ideals of theNew York City Bar’s Statement of Diversity Principles —“facilitatediversity in the hiring, retention and promotion of attorneys and in theelevation of attorneys to leadership positions within our respectiveorganizations.” To that end, we assess a nominee’s excellence in oneor more of the following areas:

Mylan L. Denerstein is a litigation partner in theNew York office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. Ms.Denerstein is Co-Chair of Gibson Dunn's PublicPolicy Practice Group and a member of the CrisisManagement, White Collar Defense andInvestigations, Financial Institutions, Labor andEmployment, Securities Litigation, andAppellate Practice Groups. Ms. Denerstein leads complex litigation andinternal investigations. She represents diversecompanies confronting a wide range oflegal issues, in their most critical times,typically involving federal, state and municipalgovernment agencies. Ms. Denerstein alsoguides legislative and policy initiatives.
Ms. Denerstein is a member of the Firm’sExecutive, Diversity and Community AffairsCommittees. She also serves as co-hiringpartner for the New York office.
Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, from 2010 to 2014,Ms. Denerstein served as Counsel to New YorkState Governor Andrew Cuomo. .

In this role, she acted as the Governor’s chiefcounsel and principal legal advisor. From 2007to 2010 during the administration of then-Attorney General Cuomo, she served as theExecutive Deputy Attorney General for SocialJustice and managed approximately 100attorneys statewide working in the charities,civil rights, environmental protection, healthcare, and labor bureaus.
From 2003 to 2007, she served as DeputyCommissioner for Legal Affairs for the New YorkCity Fire Department. From 1996 to 2003, Ms.Denerstein served first as a federal prosecutor inthe U.S. Attorney’s Office for the SouthernDistrict of New York, prosecuting complexsecurities, money laundering and organizedcrime cases, and then as Deputy Chief of theCriminal Division, where she assisted inmanaging over 100 Assistant U.S. Attorneys.

Ms. Denerstein was named to the 2020 “AlbanyPower 100”, 2020 “Law Power 100” and 2019“Law Power 50” lists by City & State New York,the 2019 list of “Notable Women in Law” byCrain’s New York Business and as one of NewYork Law Journal’s “Top Women in Law” for2016. In addition, she received “The Work &Family Legal Center’s Distinguished PublicService Award” in May 2016 from A BetterBalance for her work on the Women’s EqualityAct; was The Association of Black WomenAttorneys’ Professional AchievementHonoree in April 2015; and was the CitizensUnion of the City of New York’s Public ServiceAward Honoree in October 2015

Sandy Leung is the Executive Vice President andGeneral Counsel of Bristol-Myers SquibbCompany. Sandy began her legal career as AssistantDistrict Attorney at the Manhattan DistrictAttorney’s Office in New York City where she wasan original member of the Child Abuse Bureau.She ended her prosecutorial career, after tryingmore than 40 jury trials to verdict, as a memberof the prestigious Homicide Investigations Unitwhere she conducted investigations of unsolvedhomicides linked with drug gang activity.
Sandy is on the board of directors of the Asian-American Legal Defense and Education Fundand the board of directors of the MinorityCorporate Counsel Association. Sandy is a graduate of Tufts University andBoston College Law School.
