We often use “romantic” to describe our Classic Journeys, and the word especially captures the essence of this trip. Romanesque cathedrals and fairy-tale castles frame our journey from Prague to Paris as we cruise down winding rivers, passing old-world villages set among rolling hills etched with vineyards. This itinerary goes beyond romantic, however, showcasing centuries of European history from the Middle Ages up to the present time. Stroll through the medieval town of Rothenberg, whose castle walls overlook the Tauber River; stand in Nuremberg’s courthouse, site of the historic post-World War II trials, and ponder what took place here; and visit Strasbourg, seat of today’s European Parliament. Sail aboard the Royal Crown with history professor Carolyn Lougee on this memorable river cruise.

PARIS, FRANCE

C A R O LY N L O U G E E has been teaching history at Stanford since 1973. Her academic

specialty is 17th-century European history, and her current research focuses on how the political

and religious policies of Louis XIV affected families and communities across France. During this

program, she’ll lecture on Czechia’s historical events—from medieval Bohemia to the present

day—and the country’s often-overlooked role in European history. Using art and literature as

evidence, she will also discuss the survival of small states in Central Europe, the hybrid culture of

Alsace as a harbinger of a united Europe, and today’s “perfect storm” of national and European

Union controversies.
