8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. General Registration & Continental Breakfast8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Virginia Bell Lectureship in Person-Centered Care: Building an Active Living Environment – Mary Sharp & Rachel Kail – Edcon Group Building an Active Living environment involves (1) a willingness to try new ideas and learn, (2) a giving mindset, (3) work schedules that allow enough time for moments of conversation and group activities to take place. Much of Active Living happens in short, sometimes spontaneous bursts of interaction. For elders this is what creates the warm feeling that everyone seems to care about me, that they want me to laugh and enjoy the company of others … that I can truly live until I die. Participants will broaden their perspectives on how many people can plan important parts in providing a quality life of those who have dementia.

Information about the presenters: Mary Sharp and her daughter, Rachel Kail, are a speaking team that has captivated audiences across the US, and in Canada, Western Europe, Australia and the South Pacific. They speak from the heart and draw from personal experiences as caregivers for the matriarch of their family.

Their presentations are known for compassion, refreshing humor, tearful empathy… and, most of all, a firm understanding of how to communicate with people who have dementia. Audiences appreciate their no nonsense advice and opinions about how to handle behaviors often exhibited by people whose memory loss has made “normal” communication difficult or impossible.

10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Breakout sessions

A- Polypharmacy Induced Physical and Mental Impairment – Demetra Antimisiaris, PharmD, CGP,FASCP – University of Louisville Dept. of Family Medicine and Geriatrics There is a gap between the science studying medication induced impairment and clinical practice. This presentation aims to help translate the science into clinical practice. We will present the recent research connecting medications with quantifiable physical and mental impairment. Guidance on how to successfully manage medication burden in patients living with Alzheimer ’s disease to optimize functional outcomes will be presented.

B- Reminiscing: Remembering the Moments – Chet Mitchell – KALFA Reminiscing provides the opportunity to look back to a more comfortable and relaxed time. This interactive session will provide an overview of the importance of reminiscing and provide the steps for successful Reminiscing Programs. Participants will also be given the opportunity to participate in a sampling of Reminiscing Programs.

C- Recognizing and Responding to Sleep Disturbances and Depression in People with Alzheimer’s Disease – Charles Smith, MD, – University of Kentucky Sanders Brown Center on Aging Both disruption of sleep and depression are not uncommon for persons with dementia. Sleep disorders are often cited as a major factor in the decision to consider facility placement. This session will focus on how Alzheimer’s disease affects a person’s sleep and mood as well as management and resolution of sleep disruption and depression.

D- Making the Most of Your Care Plan Meetings - Cathleen Kilmartin, GNP-BC, ACHPN – Hosparus and Gretchen Houchin – Nazareth Home This session will empower team members to feel more confident in their roles at family meetings. Family meetings are often requested to give residents, family members or representatives, as well as other team members, a chance to discuss and resolve problems and concerns. Family meetings provide an opportunity to see if the plan is meeting the needs of the person with Alzheimer’s by reviewing what strategies are working and which ones are not. The true measure of a good meeting is the degree to which it meets the person’s care needs and enhances quality of life. This session will include evidence based techniques for facilitating discussions regarding person center care and conflict resolution.

12:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. Lunch & Presentation & Exhibits - Alzheimer’s Disease Research Update Charles Smith, MD, PhD – University of Kentucky Sanders Brown Center on Aging

A- Addressing Alzheimer ’s disease: The Body Recall Way – Jeff Rubin & Carolyn Wallace – Body Recall, Inc. Body Recall has served the Alzheimer’s disease population for over 30 years as a resource for maximizing enjoyable and appropriate exercise opportunities. Cognitive stimulation, motivation and social engagement are incorporated into each exercise session. Resulting enhanced ambulation, transfer and personal hygiene skills assist in making disease management easier. Students from Berea, KY demonstrate the results of ongoing participation relative to maintaining physical capabilities required for fall prevention, injury prevention, and successful recovery from the floor. This approach can assist communities, caregivers and individuals achieve empowerment with regard to Alzheimer ’s disease management through exercise experiences in the effort to decrease the incidence and severity of the disease.

B- Memories in the Making: Creative Arts Program for Persons with Dementia Barbara Smith – Memories in the Making Facilitator Memories in the Making introduced in 1988, is a unique program allowing individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias to express themselves through art. Through the creative process of painting, these individuals speak to us, offering us the essence of who they are. The art they produce is a tangible means of expression, which speaks to their families, professional caregivers and community. This program is currently in 23 states and 3 foreign countries. C- Research Update: What Do We Know About Alzheimer’s and Down Syndrome? Elizabeth Head, PhD. & Frederick Schmitt, PhD - University of Kentucky Sanders Brown Center on Aging Did you know 50% of people with Down syndrome age 55 and over may have Alzheimer’s disease? Workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn the connection between Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease and cutting edge research happening at the University of Kentucky Sanders Brown Center on Aging.

D- The First 24 Hours: Making A Smooth Transition into Long-Term care for Persons with Dementia Kathy Wiederhold, CDP, CDCM – Masonic Home and Expert Panel Members from Various Long-term Care Facilities. The first 24 hours in a long-term care facility can be some of the most challenging for the resident, staff and family members. When residents and family enter a new place for the first time, they are seeking anchors, meaning people or things that offer familiarity, safety or comfort. Most are seeking reassurance that their needs will be met and that someone will be there to take care of them or their family member. How can we make sure that the first 24 hours for a new resident and family member gets off to a good start? This session will discuss strategies and techniques for minimizing the challenges of that first day.

3:15 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. Closing Plenary Session: Why Do People with Alzheimer’s Disease Do That? Stephen Bliss, PsyD (Embassy Ballroom) Have you ever wondered why a person who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease says the things or reacts the way they do? This session will explore the dementia symptoms and how they relate to some of the most common types of behavioral issues.
