Journey to Eternal Families By: Sheena Perron

http://littleldsideas.blogspot.com

For this activity, the children will be going on a journey, while learning about Eternal

Families. It will help them to learn the things that they need to do, so that they can be

part of an Eternal Family. So get ready for the journey of a lifetime!

What you will need:

-Letter to Parents: A few Sundays before the activity, type up a letter to the parents. Explain a little bit about

the activity that will be coming up soon. Tell the parents that the children will be going on a journey and that

they will need a car to travel in. Tell the parents that they will need to help their children make a car. They

can do this using a big cardboard box. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but they can get creative if they

would like. We had a family make a semi truck. It was really neat.

-Print out different road signs. I found mine on the internet. I.E.- Speed Limit signs, caution signs, one way

signs, ‘Do Not Enter’, ‘Do Not Pass’, and I had a ‘Route 66’ sign also.

-Primary Bucks/money

-Envelopes- to hold their primary bucks

-Masking Tape- I used this for the road. I cut strips of tape and used it to make a middle dashed line down

the hallway. (Optional)

-License Plates (examples below)

-Signs for each station

-Headlights: Styrofoam bowls

-Flashlights (optional)

-Tires: we used black plates

-Paint Shop: markers, bumper stickers, stickers, etc.

-Map: Print out the attached map that is included.

-Mud Puddle: we used a big piece of brown paper cut out to look like a mud puddle.

-Car Wash: Streamers, bubble machine (optional)

-Policeman: we were lucky enough to have an actual policeman in our ward. Ask someone in the ward to

dress up like a policeman, or you could always print out a picture of a policeman.

-A whistle

-Snacks for the concession stand. We had candy, Capri sun, and popcorn. I asked our local movie theater if

they could donate some popcorn bags, and they did!

-Sign with prices of concession stand items

- A movie: we used one of the Animated Book of Mormon movies.

- Group leaders: we split our primary into groups. If you decide to do this, ask some teachers/parents to help

out. You may also want to make an outline of the different stations where they will go and where they are.

-Invitations- example below

Before the activity:

-Ask several adults to be in charge of a station. I did not give the helpers a script to know what to say. I gave

them the topic that they were asked to speak on and they wrote up a little message to say to the children.

-Print out all of your signs: road signs, station signs, etc.

-Print out your maps

-Make your mud puddle

-Print out your license plates

-Make your bumper stickers

-Make your concession stand price sign

-Get any other supplies that you will need: bowls, snacks, stickers, etc.

The Day of the Activity:

-Set up the DMV. We had this located in the foyer, so that it was the very first station when the children

arrived. Set up a table so you can set the license plates, envelopes, and the Primary Bucks on it.

- Set up your road by taping strips down the hallway. I didn’t make one solid line, mine was the dashed line.

-Post your road signs throughout the halls of the church.

- Set up your mud puddle.

-If you want you can have a Mileage sign: Post your mileage sign. This is what I did for my mileage sign. I

know you have all seen the ‘famous’ mileage signs that everyone takes pictures by. I used cardboard and cut

out several arrows. Then write the name of a city, I did United States cities, but also foreign cities. Then after

the city, I wrote how many miles. I found a website that told you how many miles it is to different cities:

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/distance.html

Here’s an example of a mileage sign. Sorry I had to make one, I didn’t want to copy one offline and get in

trouble. ☺ I just taped the arrows on the wall on a corner, right beside the hallway that they would be driving

down.

-Have the people who are helping out be in charge of setting up their stations. You will have to tell them

where their station will be, and any other information they may need to know.

-Set up the T.V. wherever you will be having the drive-in, and if you can set-up the concession stand ahead

of time, do that. We had the concession stand in the cultural hall, so we had to wait to set this up because the

first 3 stations were in the cultural hall.

The activity is ready to begin:

We decided to split the children into groups, and let them go to each station in small groups (you’ll want an

adult with each group). We had someone blow a whistle to tell the adults and the children that it was time to

drive to the next station. This worked out really well since everyone arrives at different times.

Station 1: DMV- This is where you will explain the activity to the children. Explain that they will be

going on a journey, a journey to Eternal Families. You will explain to the children what the Primary Bucks

are. They will receive a certain amount here, at the DMV, but they will be able to earn more throughout their

journey at each station, by answering questions, being reverent, listening, etc. But they can also be taken

away! There is a policeman roaming the halls, if he sees you driving too fast or driving too crazy, you will

have to pay a fine. Show them the envelope. Explain that the envelopes are to hold their Primary Bucks. Pass

out the envelopes (have the money already inside) and have some adults help the children tape the envelopes

to the inside of their cars. Next show the children the license plates. Pass out the License plates and have

them attach it to their cars.

Something I thought would be fun, but we decided not to do it, is to have the children take a ‘driving test’

and then receive a drivers license. Just make up a simple multiple choice test that has questions that have to

do with the different stations they will be learning about. If you want to make drivers licenses, I would

probably take the children’s pictures a few Sundays before the activity and make their licenses ahead of time.

Just look at your license and make something similar.

Once you have explained everything, send them on their way.

Station 2: Tire Shop- Children will receive their tires and they will hear a message about

Testimony and Faith. ‘We can’t get very far without tires. And just like tires, we need a testimony

and faith to help us get to where we are going.’

- We used black paper plates for the tires.

Hong Kong 6,890 mi.

Houston 1,493 mi.

Page 3: Journey to Eternal Families Instruction

Station 3: Repair Shop (Lights)- Children will receive their lights here. They will be hearing a

message about Christ being the light and the way. We had little flashlight necklaces to pass out to each child.

(I found these at Oriental Trading, and they even said “Jesus Christ is the light and the way” on them.

-Attach 2 bowls to the front of the car to represent headlights.

Station 4: Paint Shop- Children will come here to paint their cars. They will be hearing a message

about Service.

- We used markers, stickers, etc. to decorate the cars.

-When we did this, the teacher in charge of this had heart bumper stickers to put on the car. I think

she had them write different ways that they could serve on their heart and then taped it to their car.

Station 5: Map Store- Children will come here to hear a message about the Holy Ghost, Scriptures,

Prophets and Prayer. By using these we can find our way. But without these in our lives we will be lost. i.e.

Show the map: By reading the scriptures, listening to the Holy Ghost, Following the Prophet, and Praying,

we can be with our Family Forever.

- We decorated this room with different maps, globes, etc.

-This is where you will use the map that I made. It is attached below.

Mud Puddle- As they come out of the map store they will drive over a mud puddle and get dirty.

Station 6: Car Wash- The children will come here after they drive through the mud to get clean. They

will hear a message about Repentance and Baptism. Explain that everyone makes mistakes. And when we

make mistakes we get ‘dirty’ just like your car. But through repentance/baptism we can be made clean again!

-If you have a bubble machine, you could use it for soap to clean the dirty cars. We also had strips of

streamers hanging down in front of the door and inside the room to make it look more like a car wash.

Station 7: The Temple – The children will go and visit the Temple. Here they will hear a message,

“Temple Blessings Unite Families.” They will learn how important temples are and that we should visit them

as often as we can.

- When we did this I asked my In-laws, which are temple workers. They dressed up in white, and

had very reverent music playing in the background. They also had a picture of the Twin Falls

Temple, which is the temple in our area.

Policeman- He will stop the children for ‘speeding’ and then talk to them about forgiveness. He will take

a ‘Primary Buck’ away.

If you print out a picture of a policeman, as you pass the pictures, stop the children and tell them that they

were speeding. Oh No what will we do. Then you can go on to talk about forgiveness/repentance.

Concession Stand- Here the children will use the ‘Primary Bucks they earned to buy snacks at the

concession stand. They will pick out their snacks, and then head over to the movie.

Drive-in Movie- Here they will park and watch a movie. We used an Animated Book of Mormon movie.

Below I have attached the maps that I used, the invitations, the License plates, and ideas for

the Station signs.

I printed the maps onto tan cardstock and then cut them into 4 separate maps. Then I printed out the

‘map legend’, cut them out and glued them to the back of each map. http://littleldsideas.blogspot.com

This is what my invitations looked like. I found the border at www.mormonshare.com

Here’s an example of the License plate I used:

Families are Forever

When: Where: Time:

Bring your car and get ready to go on an exciting road trip and learn about eternal families. After your long journey we’ll all go to the Drive-in and enjoy a movie and

popcorn. Hope to see you there!!!

Now for the Station Signs

I’m not going to share the files for all of my signs, because I have no idea where I got the clip art from, and I used different fonts that I downloaded. So, just to be safe I won’t share those, but I will tell you

what they look like. They aren’t hard to make, I promise!

Alright, I have a scrapbook program on my computer, so I am able to make banners. If you aren’t able to make a banner, then just make the signs on regular 8 ½ X 11 sized paper.

DMV: I don’t think I made a sign for this. But you could just have a sign that says:

Idaho Department of Motor Vehicles

(replacing Idaho with your state)

Tire Shop: I found 2 pictures of stacked tires that I put on each side of the sign. Then I used a chunky font that kind of resembled tires, and typed “The Tire Shop”.

Repair Shop: I found a picture of a mechanic and a picture of some tools. Then typed

“The Repair Shop”

The Paint Shop: I used a picture of a smiling car and a picture of a paint brush. Then I found a font that looked like paint and typed “The Paint Shop”

The Map Store: I used a picture of the Compass Rose and a picture of a lady looking at a map. The

name of the store was “Going Places Map Store”.

The Car Wash: I found a picture (I wish I knew where, so I could tell you) is said, ‘Car Wash’ and the letters were covered with soap, and there was a guy beside it with a rag. I used that picture and

above it, with a really cute font that had bubbles in it, typed ‘Squeeky Clean’. So, the name of the car wash was: Squeeky Clean Car Wash.

I would just use a picture of someone washing a car.

The Temple: So, I don’t have this saved on my computer, but I know I made one. But I think I remember what I did. So, I found a picture of the temple and beside the picture I typed,

“Twin Falls, Idaho Temple.”

The Concession Stand: I used a picture of a drink and some popcorn. Then I typed: “Concession Stand.”

You will also need to make a sign with the prices for each concession stand item. I just wrote it on a poster board.

-The clipart that I used for the ‘Map’ came from www.mormonshare.com and also

www.sugardoodle.net
