All the Alpacas are well and happy and the grass is green. It has been a lovely summer. Everyone is being on their best behaviour even though they have not been re-mated. Zarzamora has a go on Princessa. !! They are enjoying the autumn sun and lying after their breakfast for about three hours sunbaking. They are so much wiser than human beings. They all had their autumn ADE vitamins and Cod Liver oil by mouth. The potential young studs are being good too, not too much rompsing. We let them into the garden every other day to eat the poplar and willow leaves that are beginning to fall. Once a week they swap with the girls and go to the back. Last weekend I went to the Goulburn Show with two helpers, we had a good time and promoted Alpacas and their product, that wonderful fleece. Have recently planted 18 trees, elm and sycamore.

Garlic just going in the vegetable patch and it is burgeoning with silver beet, kale, lettuce, tomatoes and lots of herbs and pumpkin. Must be the Alpaca compost, it is terrific for the garden and can be used straight from the poo pile. Do not forget my book, Alpaca Addiction. Joy

Shoalhaven Seeks Money For Goulburn Project

The construction of a new bridge over the Shoalhaven River between Nowra and Goulburn has become Shoalhaven Council's top priority for federal government regional development grant funding, even though it is outside its boundaries.

The current low level timber bridge over the river at Oallen Ford near Nerriga has a weight limit on it and is in urgent need of a replacement, expected to cost around $1.2 million.

Council was forced to admit earlier this year it had no major projects investigated, costed and " shovel ready" to apply for funding.

Gilmore MP Jo Gash has invited Regional Development Minister Simon Crean to visit Nowra next week, to brief council on what needs to be done to access grant allocations.

After the new Oallen Bridge council has listed its second and third priorities as augmenting power and water supplies to the Albatross Aviation Technology Park, and sealing the gravel sections of Tomerong's Turpentine Road.

Mrs Gash believes council should ask Canberra to fund the construction of a third bridge over the Shoalhaven River at Nowra, but Cr John Fergusson believes a new bridge near Nerriga has a better chance of success. Following taken from RTA website

What is happening west of Nerriga? The whole of the length of MR92 within Shoalhaven City Council is now sealed, and within the Palerang Council area, between Nerriga and Braidwood, less than 20 kilometres of gravel surface remains. This is gradually being improved and sealed as funds permit, with the Bindi Brook crossing (south of Nerriga) programmed to be replaced in 2010/11 financial year.

Palerang Council also maintains the Oallen Ford Road (a Local Road under the care and control of Council) which is sealed from MR92 to the east of the Shoalhaven River. Goulburn Mulwarree Council maintains the Oallen Ford bridge over the Shoalhaven River and the Oallen Ford Road west of the Shoalhaven River. Goulburn Mulwarree Council is using funds from the Australian Government under the Roads to Recovery Program to complete sealing of the Oallen Ford Road to Sandy Point and to replace the Oallen Ford Bridge. There is now only four kilometres of gravel remaining on the Oallen Ford Road. The Oallen Ford Road provides links via local roads to the State Road network at Tarago, Goulburn and Marulan.

Who is responsible for Main Road 92? Main Road 92 is a Regional Road linking Nowra and Braidwood and under the care and control of by Shoalhaven City Council (between Nowra and the Endrick River) and Palerang Council (from Endrick River, near Nerriga to Braidwood). The need and priority for improvements are matters for each council and the RTA assists councils with funds for maintenance and minor improvement works. In March 1998 the Commonwealth Government identified MR92 between Nowra and Nerriga as a Road of National Importance (RONI). In 2001 funding was made available from the Australian Government, the NSW Government and Shoalhaven City Council to upgrade the 54 kilometre section of MR92 between Hames Road, Nowra and Nerriga. The RTA managed upgrading this section including the environmental assessment and design and construction of the works. Care and control of the road has reverted to Palerang and Shoalhaven City councils now that the MR92 Nowra to Nerriga Upgrade project has been completed. The RTA is not aware of any plans by the Australian and NSW governments to fund an upgrade of MR92 beyond Nerriga or any other routes west of Nerriga. With the increase in traffic over Oallen Ford, the question is - When is a new bridge going to happen?

The next busy bee of the Windellama Landcare Group will be held at the Chain-of-ponds, on Sandy Point Road on Saturday 21 May when we will be erecting a new fence. Come at 9.30 am for a cuppa and a 10 am start. Lunch will be provided. Don’t forget to bring work gloves and pliers (and any other fencing tools if you wish).

Newcomers to the Windellama area are most welcome to join our Group – if you would like to learn more about what the Windellama Landcare Group does, you are invited to come along to one of our working bees (and there is always some a good tucker too!).

The Upper Shoalhaven Natural Resource Management (NRM) Reference Group will hold its next meeting at Windellama Hall on Friday 13 May and Windellama Landcare members are invited to attend.

These meetings are usually held at Braidwood (they also try to rotate them) – and are a get-together of interested groups to discuss land care and other natural resource management matters. In the afternoon they will visit some of the Windellama Landcare projects – about three sites. It would be great to have a substantial representation of Windellama Landcare members at the meeting to hear about and contribute ideas to the broader catchment initiatives, also to show off our projects! The meeting is from 9.30 – 12.30 and lunch will be provided. A field trip focused on Landcare will follow.

TSAI REPORT

Our AGM was held on April 13th and I am pleased to report that the executive positions were filled however we still have some vacancies on the committee. Our committee for 2011/12 is as follows: Ken Vassel – President Neil Shepherd – Vice President Gill Shepherd – Secretary Vacant - Assistant Secretary Anne Sturgiss – Treasurer Vacant – Assistant Treasurer Tarago Times Team – Anne Sturgiss, Ellen Sylvester, Fay Newman, Julianne De Ruyter, Sue Maas with Gill Shepherd deputising as the TSAI rep when Anne is not available due to winter commitments.

If you would like to get involved and apply for one of the vacant positions to assist the running of the TSAI, help spread the load and/or provide new ideas please contact one of the committee.

For those of you in the community that are not sure what the TSAI does, here is a short summary:

• TSAI owns the Tarago Recreation Area and maintains this ground for the use of the whole community.

• TSAI runs the weekly raffles at the Loaded Dog Hotel on Friday nights and all proceeds from these raffles go to the maintenance of the recreation ground and the support of sport in our community.

• The TSAI owns the local publication The Tarago Times which is run by team of volunteers to produce 11 issues of the publication annually.

• TSAI owns and maintains the Tarago Times website.

• The TSAI has representation on the Tarago and District Progress Assoc Inc (TADPAI) all-committees forum.

• The TSAI houses and maintains the Community Barbeque Trailer. The TSAI’s other annual fundraiser is the catering for the public at the Toyota Landcruiser Club’s Willowglen Challenge.

Our great news for this month is that our application to the Veolia Mulwaree Trust for the walking track has been approved. Work will commence after Easter with a ground breaking ceremony, so watch this space for photos of the process.

On the sporting front I am pleased to report that Tarago has started soccer teams. Affiliated with MBK there are the following MBK United Tarago teams: U6’s coached by Kathy McCabe, U10’s coached by Luke Hook and U13’s coached by Brad Carey. First competition is on 30th April and we look forward to a Soccer News column in future issue of the Times. To

assist the setup of the teams initial sponsorship of $464.40 has been granted to the soccer teams to purchase Agility Training Poles, Drink bottles and holders and encouragement awards for the teams.

There was a working bee held on Sunday 17th April 2011 to erect the memorial bench by the Wilkinson Family in memory of David Wilkinson who was one of our founding members, mend the cricket fence and repairs to the Pony Club Arena fence. A vote of thanks to those people who came to help: Ken Vassel, Mark and Jack Quinlan, Anne Sturgiss, Peter Hook, Neil Shepherd, Poppy Wilkinson, Rene, Davina, David and Ryan Oosting. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks to the Tarago Landcare Group who prepared the site for the planting of the Lone Pine on Anzac Day and also to Geoff Burns for his hard work in securing the replacement tree for us. Our original Lone Pine which was destroyed in the freak twister winds last year was donated by the Tarago Public School to the TSAI and we are pleased to be planting a replacement. Secure fencing will be erected around the tree bed to protect it from harm.

On the recreation front I have put the feelers out for a regular yoga instructor to come to Tarago for classes in the Hall. Please see my separate article calling for expressions of interest in yoga classes and reply to me asap as numbers will assist in obtaining an instructor. With the Hall sub-committee of TADPAI about to lodge an application for the much needed kitchen upgrade any new and continued usage of the hall can only assist the success of the grant.

Some sad news is that the Tarago Pony Club is operating on very low numbers and may fold if support is not given soon. If you would like to join the Pony Club or have any questions please contact me as I am the Pony Club representative to the TSAI.
