Taean County is a popular touristdestination in South Korea that’sfamous for its seafood. In Decemberof 2008, this region experienced theworst oil spill in its history when nearly66,000 barrels of crude oil washedashore, creating a huge ecological andeconomic disaster.

In the ensuing months, many peoplefrom around the world came together

to help clean up and restore the area.About 63,800 people reside in Taean,but volunteers like these two girlssurpassed the one million mark. To methis proves that if we all join togetherwe really can make a difference.

In the Islamic country of Yemen, there is a law that stateswomen must dress “decently” outside of their family circles.However, the interpretation of this law is much debated, evenamongst Muslims themselves.

I took this photograph in the city of Hays in Yemen, whereI’ve been many times for my work. On this trip, I accompanieda small group of inspectors on a tour of the country todocument the different projects of social development.

When we entered this classroom, some of the girls coveredtheir faces to hide their eyes or turned their heads around.

SIGHTINGS

This may have been because there were men with me whowere a little older, or because they just more strictly follow thereligious traditions of their families. The girl wearing the whitescarf, I believe, was from a more open-minded family anddidn’t mind being uncovered in front of strangers. Since thereare many interpretations of the law, it’s not uncommon to seegroups of girls together, some dressed like Westerners andothers completely veiled.

When I noticed that every man, woman, and child whowalked by this huge advertisement stopped to stare andcomment on it, I had to get a photo. This ad for the Austrianmanufacturer, Palmers Textil AG, was on Unter den Linden,one of the main boulevards in Berlin.

Some time after I took this photograph, a brother of oneof the models asked me for a signed copy, which he endedup giving to his sister as a gift.

Eid al-Adha, or “Festival of Sacrice,” is a holiday thatsome say is like the American Thanksgiving and Christ-mas rolled into one. It commemorates the willingness ofIbrahim to sacrice his son as an act of obedience to God,

and is celebrated by Muslims worldwide.In Morocco, each Muslim household is expected to

slaughter a sheep for Eid al-Adha. Residents of Fez, thecountry’s third largest city, head to one of the many sheepsouks (markets) to purchase sheep. Souks are usuallyheld in open elds where tents selling charcoal, grills,knives, and food spring up everywhere. The atmosphere isalways lively with men showing off their sheep and peopleshopping.

This year a sheep cost about three weeks’ salary forthe average Moroccan, so it was considered a majorpurchase. Since bargaining is common here, the hagglingwas especially hot and heavy!

Sheep usuallymove willingly when they arein the field, but after beingpurchased they will sometimesput up a fight, and the new ownerwill drag or carry it home. Thefamily will keep the sheep inthe house from the time it ispurchased until it is sacrificed.
