The Magnificat only appears in the GospelaccordingtoLuke.Luke,morethananyoftheGospels, is concerned with the marginalised,andpreachestheimportanceofthistheologicalquestionattheverystartofthebook.

AsdescribedinLuke(1:26–56),afewdaysaftertheproclamationbytheangelGabriel(ofthefuturebirthofJesus),MaryvisitshercousinElizabeth, who was pregnant with John theBaptist.ThiseventisknownastheVisitationoftheVirginMary.Mary responds toElizabeth’sprophetic welcome greeting with a hymn inthestyleofthePsalms.Thisisfollowedbythebirth of John the Baptist. The hymn featuresnumerous echoes of the Song of Hannah,motherof theprophetSamuel, togive thanksforhisbirthinSamuel1:2.

MarypraisesGodastheonewhoturnstoher and to all theweak, helpless and hungryinordertoraisethemup,andinsteadtopplesthe powerful, the rich and the prideful from theirthrones.

In a purely quantitative sense there isrelatively little Latin church music in Bach’sœuvre. What there is does however include

works that were already admired in the early19thcentury,suchastheB minor Massandthe Magnificat in D major.

Settingsof theMagnificatwereperformedduring the afternoon Vesper services. Bachcomposed the first version of the work, in Eflatmajorandwithoutflutes,fortheChristmasof 1723, with the second version followingbetween 1732 and 1735. This version couldthen be performed on all feast days in theecclesiastical year on which settings of theMagnificat were heard: at the three MarianfeaststhatwereobservedinLeipzig(theFeastof the Purification of the Blessed VirginMary(Candlemas) on2February, theAnnunciationon25MarchandtheVisitationon2July),oratEasterorPentecost.

HereBach did not set the texts in theda capo aria form used in cantatas of the sameperiod, but as a Biblical text divided into tencontinuous verses. This then produced tenmusically interconnected complexes, some ofthem almost miniatures, concluding with thedoxology(Gloria Patri).

Preamble

According to the Jewish faith, God revealedhimself toAbraham andMoses. The HebrewBiblecomprisesthefivebooksofMoses.IntheculturallandscapeoftheMiddleEast,thetimebeforeAbrahamwas an era of many deities.In contrast Jews, in accordance with God’sinstruction conveyed through Abraham andMoses,believein‘onealmightyGod,creatorofthewholeworld’.Theycallhim‘Adonai’.

ForMuslims,Allahisthe‘onetrueGod,andMohammedishisProphet’.AMuslim’spurposeistorespectthecommandmentsofthereligionand to live according to Allah’s precepts.Muslims see justice, compassion, peace,reason, education and progress as importanttenetsofhumancoexistence.

ForChristians,JesusaccordingtotheNewTestamentistheMessiahandSonofGod,sentfromGodtoredeemallpeople.Withhisarrivalinworld history the ‘KingdomofGod’ begins.JesuswasbornaJew.AsapreacherhecitedmanypassagesfromtheJewishBible,addingto themin theprocess:all this isdescribed intheNewTestament.ForChristians,theOldandNewTestamentstogetherconstitutetheBible.

All three Abrahamic religions believe ineternallife.Alongsideconsiderabledifferences,the three faiths also have a great deal incommon. Following the Enlightenment in the

ChristianWest,themostsignificantunitingfactorhasbeentheunderstandingoftheimportanceofachievingmutualrespectbetweenthethreeAbrahamicreligions–workingwithratherthanagainsteachother.

WhathasallthistodowithLumen? Lumen remindsusofwhatthethreeAbrahamicreligionshaveincommonandcallsuponustorecognisethatitisessentialforthefutureofallreligionsthatfundamentalist doctrines should be overcome.Acceptance of eternal truth demands that weknowandbelieve this,and indeed thatwearealso accepting of the diversity of the globalfamilyofbelievers,asithasdevelopedoverthecenturies.Thisalsoentailsabeliefintoleranceand requires us to practise the understandingtowardsthosewhotakeadifferentviewthathasbeen learntover the two-thousand-yearhistoryof theWestern world.Why should it upset usif a religiousMuslimwomanwears a burqa in ourcountry?

ThiswouldbeasuitablepointtorecalltheprinceofallGermanpoets, JohannWolfgangvon Goethe. His second magnum opus,together with Faust, is a poetry collectionin twelve books, the West-östlicher Divan (‘West-EasternDiwan’) thathassince, thanksto Goethe, become an iconic piece of globalcultural heritage (‘Hewho knows himself andothers/willrecogniseheretoo/thatOrientandOccident/cannolongerbedivided’).

Jesus felt pure feelings and thoughtthat here, in the silence, was only one God;he who made him a Godoffended against his holy will.

And thus should righteousness shine,just as Mohammed had also achieved;only through the idea of the Onedid he conquer the world.

ForGoethe–andthisisparticularlynotablefromtoday’sperspective–therewasneveranyquestionthroughouthislifethattheQur’an,aswellastheBible,wasaholybookandatangibleexample of the existence of other writingsbeside the Bible that were sacred to largepartsofhumanity. ‘Andyet themostsupremeculture that can be accorded to these recenttimescanmostprobablybeseeninthenotionthat everything possessing dignity, everythingindeedthatisvaluabletoman,shouldbeabletoexistsidebysidetogether,andthatdifferentways of thinking should be able to developpeacefully alongside one another in the verysame territory, without seeking to force theothersout.’

Thedevelopmentofa‘pluralistsociety’aftertheSecondWorldWarhasshapedthegeneralconsciousness of an incipient partnershipbetween Jews, Christians and Muslims.Abraham is considered to be the common‘fatherofbelief’and‘consequentlytheroot,orthe substantiating connecting link behind theassociation of Christians, Jews and Muslims’

(Hubert Frankemölle). Karl Josef Kuschelwas one of the first to coin the expression‘Abrahamic ecumenical community’ (Kuschel:Perspectives on an Abrahamic Ecumenical Community).Hisbookhaspreparedthewayfor‘newinterfaiththinking’aroundtheworld.InhishandbookWeltethos(‘TowardsaGlobalEthic’,2012) Hans Küng outlined his much-quotedproposition‘Therecanbenopeacebetweenthenationswithoutpeacebetweenthereligions’or‘Therecanbenohumancoexistenceorsurvivalwithoutaglobalethos;noworldpeacewithoutreligious peace; no religious peace withoutreligiousdialogue.’

There isone (simple)way towardsmutualunderstanding:music.ThemusicoftheRomanchurch is Gregorian chant, which was at therootof thedevelopmentofWesternmusic forseveralvoicesanddevelopedoutofthesinginginJewishsynagogues.Themuezzin’scalls toprayerinthemosque(Adhan)recalltheformsofsingingmentionedabove.Theypossessthemagicofaparticularkindof‘mysticalaesthetic’and elevate the spokenword, so to speak. ItseemsnotablethatanimportantunitingfactorbetweenJudaism,ChristianityandIslamisthewordAmen:āmëin,Amen,āmin.

Thus the ‘musical dialogue’ Lumen attempts to translate the open form of anoratorio – the diversity and yet at the sametime the commonality of the language of theBible,theTorahandtheQur’an–intoa‘unityof diversity’: to convert the poetry of the Oldand New Testaments, of the Torah and the

Qur’anintoalanguageofsoundsandsinging.It is a contribution towards interfaith thinkingandreflection,towardsempathyandsympathy.Lumen:amusicalcontemplation.

ThecentralthemeinallsocietiesonEarthistherelationshipbetweenpeople,theovercomingofpersonal,nationalandinternationalegotisms– thus, a globalisation not only of materialinterests, but of a spiritual community. Thebasisforthisisinterfaithdialogue.Thishastobedesiredbyall,Jews,ChristiansandMuslimsalike,withtheconditionthatpeopleareliberatedfrom any form of appropriation, paternalism,fanaticism or instrumentalisation. With it thefutureofhumanitycanbegin. ‘Wehavetogetawayfromthenotionthatweareinpossession

of one absolute truth, set down in revealedtexts.Allreligionsareequallyfarremovedfromthetruth,whichwecanneverpossess,butonlyeveraimfor.’(JanAssmann,Egyptologist)

Das Magnificat ist nur im Evangelium nach Lukasenthalten.LukaswendetsichvonallenEvangelistenammeistendenAusgegrenztenzu,erpropagiertgleichzuBeginndieBedeutungdiesestheologischenAnliegens.

InderDarstellungdesLukasevangeliums(Lk1,26–56)besuchtMariawenigeTagenachder Verkündigung durch den Engel GabrielihreCousineElisabeth,diemitJohannesdemTäufer schwanger war. Diese Begebenheitwird Mariä Heimsuchung genannt. AufElisabeths prophetischen Willkommensgrußantwortet Maria mit einem Hymnus im Stilder Psalmen. Es schließt sich die GeburtJohannes des Täufers an. Der Hymnus lässtvielfache Anklänge an den Lobgesang derHannah, der Mutter des Propheten Samuel,in1Sam2erkennen.

MariapreistGottalsden,dersichihrundallen Geringen, Machtlosen und Hungerndenzuwendet, um sie aufzurichten, der dagegendieMächtigen,ReichenundHochmütigenvonihrenThronenstürzt.

Rein quantitativ betrachtet, ist dielateinische Kirchenmusik in Bachs Schaffenwenig vertreten. Darunter befinden sich

allerdings Werke, die bereits im frühen 19.Jahrhundertbewundertwurden,wiedieh-Moll-MesseoderdasMagnificatD-Dur.

Aufgeführt wurden Vertonungen desMagnificat innerhalb des nachmittäglichenVespergottesdienstes. Die erste Fassung desWerkes,inEs-DurundohneFlöten,komponierteBachfürdasWeihnachtsfest1723,diezweiteVersiondannzwischen1732und1735.DiesewarnunanallenFesttagendesKirchenjahresaufführbar,an denenMagnificat-Kompositionenmusiziertwurden:andendreiMarienfesten,dieinLeipzigbegangenwurden(MariäReinigungam 2. Februar, Mariä Verkündigung am 25.März,MariäHeimsuchungam2.Juli)oderanOsternundPfingsten.

BachvertontehierdieTextenichtinderDa-capo-ArienformzeitgleicherKantaten,sondernalseinenauf10VerseverteiltenfortlaufendenBibeltext. So entstanden 10 musikalischzusammenhängendeKomplexe, teilweise fastMiniaturen,diemitderDoxologie(„GloriaPatri“)beschlossenwerden.

Vorrede

Nach jüdischem Glauben stellte sich GottAbrahamundMosevor.DiefünfBücherMosesind die hebräische Bibel. Das Judentum istdas vonGott auserwählte Volk. Die Zeit vorAbraham war die Zeit von vielen Gottheitenin der Kulturlandschaft des VorderenOrients.DieJudenglauben,nachderWeisungGottesdurch Abraham und Moses, an den „einenallmächtigen Gott, den Schöpfer der ganzenWelt“.Sienennenihn„Adonay“.

Allah ist fürdieMuslimeder „einzigartigeGott, und Mohammed ist sein Prophet“. Zieldes Muslim ist die Achtung der religiösenGeboteundsozuleben,wieesAllahgefällt.ImZusammenleben sind Muslime Gerechtigkeit,Barmherzigkeit, Friede, Vernunft, Bildung undFortschrittwichtig.

Für die Christen ist Jesus gemäß demNeuenTestamentdervonGottzurErlösungallerMenschengesandteMessiasundSohnGottesund mit seinem Eintritt in die Weltgeschichtebeginnt das „Reich Gottes“. Jesus wurdeals Jude geboren. Er predigte viele Inhalteaus der jüdischen Bibel und ergänzte derenAusführungen.DavonwirdimNeuenTestamentberichtet.AltesundNeuesTestamentsind fürdieChristendieBibel.

Alle drei abrahamischen Religionenglauben an das ewige Leben. Neben

wesentlich Trennendem, gibt es auchwesentlich Gemeinsames. Das wesentlichGemeinsame ist nach der Aufklärung imChristlichen Abendland die Erkenntnis derVerwirklichungdesgegenseitigenRespektsderdrei abrahamischen Religionen voreinander,alsoeinMiteinanderstattGegeneinander.

Was hat das alles mit Lumen zu tun?Lumen erinnert an das Gemeinsame derdrei abrahamischen Religionen und dieErkenntnis,dassfürdieZukunftderreligiösenWeltgeschichte die Überwindung vonfundamentalistischen Doktrinen unverzichtbarist. Die Akzeptanz der ewigen Wahrheiterfordert dasWissenumdenGlaubendaran,und zwar dieAkzeptanz auch gegenüber derVielfalt der historisch gewachsenen Vielfaltder glaubendenWeltfamilie. Dazu gehört derToleranzbegriff,dieAusübungderDuldsamkeitgegenüber dem Andersdenkenden, die derabendländischeMenschinseiner2000jährigenGeschichtegelernthat.Warumstörtes,wennhierbeiunseineislamischreligiöseFraueineBurkaträgt?

An dieser Stelle soll an den deutschenDichterfürsten Johann Wolfgang von Goetheerinnert werden. Sein zweites Hauptwerk,neben„Faust“,isteineGedichtsammlungin12Büchern, „West-östlicher Divan“, in GoethesHandschrift inzwischen Weltkulturerbe („Wersich selbst und andre kennt / wird auch hier

erkennen: / Orient undOkzident / sind nichtmehrzutrennen“).

Jesus fühlte rein und dachteNur den einen Gott im Stillen;Wer ihn selbst zu Gotte machte,Kränkte seinen heil’gen Willen.

Und so muss das Rechte scheinen,Was auch Mahomet gelungen;Nur durch den Begriff des einenHat er alle Welt bezwungen.

FürGoethe–unddasistbesondersausheutiger Sicht bemerkenswert – stand zeitseines Lebens außer Frage, dass auch derQur’an,nebenderBibel,einheiligesBuchseiundeingreifbaresBeispieldafür,dassnebenderBibelnochandereSchriftenexistieren,diegroßenTeilenderMenschheitheiligsind.„Die höchste Kultur aber, welche diesen letzten Zeiten gegönnt seyn möge, erwiese sich wohl darin: daß alles Würdige, dem Menschen eigentlich Werthe, in verschiedenen Formen neben einander müßte bestehen können und daß daher verschiedene Denkweisen, ohne sich verdrängen zu wollen, in einer und derselben Region ruhig neben einander fortwandelten.“

Die Entwicklung einer „pluralistischenGesellschaft“ nach dem zweiten Weltkrieghat das allgemeine Bewusstsein einerbeginnenden Partnerschaft von Juden,ChristenundMuslimengeprägt.Abrahamgilt

als gemeinsamer „Vater des Glaubens“ und„folglichalsdieWurzelbzw.dasbegründendeBindeglied der Zusammenarbeit zwischenChristen, Juden und Muslimen“ (HubertFrankemölle). Karl Josef Kuschel prägte alseiner der ersten den Begriff „abrahamischeÖkumene“ (Kuschel: „Perspektiven für eineabrahamische Ökumene“). Sein Buch istTüröffnerfürdas„neueinterreligiöseDenken“weltweit. Hans Küng vertritt in seinemHandbuch„Weltethos“(2012)seinevielzitierteThese „Kein Friede zwischen den Nationenohne Friede zwischen den Religionen“oder „Kein menschliches Zusammenlebenoder Überleben ohne ein Weltethos. KeinWeltfrieden ohne Religionsfrieden. KeinReligionsfriedenohneReligionsdialog.“

Es gibt einen (einfachen) Weg zumgegenseitigenVerständnis:dieMusik.DieMusikder römischen Kirche ist der GregorianischeChoral,derUrsprungwarfürdieEntwicklungder mehrstimmigen abendländischen Musik,erhatsichausdemsynagogalenGesangdesJudentumsentwickelt.DieGebetsrufe(Adhan)des Muezzins in der Moschee erinnern anvorgenannte Gesangsweisen. Sie habenden „Zauber“ einer besonderen „mythischenÄsthetik“,sie„erhöht“dasgesprocheneWort.Istesnichtbemerkenswert,dasseinwichtigesBindegliedzwischenJudentum–ChristentumundIslamdasAmenist:āmëin,Amen,āmin.

Soversuchtnunder„musikalischeDialog“Lumen,dieoffeneFormeinesOratoriums,dieDiversitätundgleichzeitigdieGemeinsamkeit

der Sprache der Bibel, der Thora und desQur’ans in eine „Einheit der Vielfalt“ zuübersetzen, die Poesie desAlten und NeuenTestaments,derThoraunddesQur’ansineineSprachedesKlangs,desKlingens.EinBeitragzum interreligiösenDenkenundNachdenken,zum Einfühlen und Mitfühlen. Lumen – einemusikalischeReflexion.

DaszentraleThemainallenGesellschaftendieser Erde wird das Verhältnis „vonMenschzu Mensch“ bleiben, die Überwindung vonpersönlichen, nationalen und internationalenEgoismen, eine Globalisierung also nicht nurvon materiellen Interessen, sondern eineGlobalisierung „geistiger Gemeinschaft“. DieBasis dafür ist der „interreligiöse Dialog“.Er muss von allen gewollt werden, Juden,ChristenundMuslimen,mitderBedingungvonBefreiung Vereinnahmung, Bevormundung,Fanatismus und Instrumentalisierung. Mitihm beginnt die Zukunft des Menschen. „Wirmüssen von der Vorstellung loskommen,

im Besitz einer absoluten, in geoffenbartenSchriften niedergelegten Wahrheit zu sein.Alle Religionen sind gleich weit entfernt vonderWahrheit,diewirniebesitzen,nuranzielenkönnen.“(JanAssmann,Ägyptologe).

He haswon numerous international competitions, and his works includeliturgical and choral music, chamber and orchestral pieces, andmanycompositionsdevotedtotheorgan.HewaspresidentoftheHochschule für Musik und Theater München from 1995 to 2003,previouslyservingasaprofessorandvicepresident.

FranzHaukBorninNeuburganderDonauin1955,FranzHaukstudiedchurchandschoolmusic,withpianoandorgan,attheMunichMusikhochschuleandinSalzburg.In1988hetookhisdoctoratewithathesisonchurchmusicinMunichatthebeginningofthe19thcentury.Since1982hehasservedasorganistatIngolstadtMinster,andsince1995alsoaschoirmaster.HehasgivenconcertsinEuropeandtheUnitedStatesand made a number of recordings. Since October 2002 he hastaught in thehistoricalperformanceandchurchmusicdepartmentoftheHochschulefürMusikundTheaterMünchen.HefoundedtheSimonMayrChorusin2003.

ConcertodeBassusConcertodeBassusisaninternationalensembleengaging young musicians in historicalperformanceofmusic fromthe17th,18thand19thcenturies.Manymembersoftheensembleare outstanding students or graduates of theHochschule für Musik und Theater Munich,withwindinstrumentsconstructedonhistoricalprinciples.Theensemble takes its name fromthefundamentalelementofBaroquemusicandfromthedistinguishedfamilythathasdonesomuch to promote culture and knowledge.TheensembletakesitsnamefromthatfundamentalelementofBaroquemusic:thebassus.

Shortly after taking up the position of Thomaskantor in Leipzig in 1723, Bach wrote a Magnificat in E flat major for performance at Christmas. Around a decade later he revised the work, transposing it down to D major and making it more concise. Utilising a Biblical text, the piece is suffused with a series of memorable arias and choruses and orchestrated with spectacular grandeur. Lumen is a contemporary musical dialogue that urges empathy between the three Abrahamic religions. Translating the oratorio form into a ‘unity of diversity’, Robert M. Helmschrott has converted the poetry of the Old and New Testaments, the Torah and Qur’an into an interfaith ‘language of sounds and singing’.
