Dear Friends and Parishioners of St. Mary’s,

It is hard to believe that we are reaching Labor Day weekend and that our fall program year is about to begin. On Sunday, September 11th you are invited to join us for the Open House and Blessing of our church school wing. The wing was previously occupied by the Purple Moose Pre-school and has now been cleaned, repainted and reclaimed by St. Mary’s for our children’s worship space and Sunday school classrooms. We will be providing tours of the wing and a blessing of our new space after both the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. services. I wish to give a special thanks to our college students Hannah Stiff and Alec Thune who painted a lovely mural in the wing. I also wish to thank all those who have been working on the space to get it ready for our youth. Our choir will also be returning on Sunday, September 11th at the 10:00 a.m. service, and they will lead us in hymns which will appropriately observe the 15th anniversary of 9/11, when terrorist attacks led to the death of 2,996 people and over 6,000 injured here in the United States. Special prayers and a moment of silence will be offered to remember all those who lost their lives, and for the first responders who paid the ultimate sacrifice working to help others.

This fall you are invited to join our “One Book – One Congregation” book discussion. We will be reading Lillian Daniel’s book When “Spiritual But Not Religious” Is Not Enough: Seeing God In Surprising Places, Even the Church. You may order the book on Amazon.com, get the book from the library or download it on kindle. Generally speaking, there will be no changes to the service schedule as we begin the Fall program year. Services will

continue to be held at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. as they have been throughout the Summer.

We will also continue with our “Third Sunday” services: On the third Sunday of each month (usually), hymns will be

sung at the 8:00 a.m. service, accompanied by organ. At the 10:00 a.m. service, the musical accompaniment will be guitar and keyboard.

On Sunday, September 11, we will bless the new Children’s

Worship and Sunday School space, formally occupied by the Purple Moose Preschool. All are invited to join us for the blessing and Open House. In addition to the reorganized

classroom space, there is a beautiful mural painted on the wall by our very own college students, Hannah Stiff and Alec Thune, depicting the seven days of creation.

St. Mary’s Sunday School will begin on Sunday, September 18, with the following schedule:

Children’s Worship at 10:00 a.m. for ages 3 through 2nd

grade. Children join their families in the sanctuary at the Sharing of the Peace portion of the liturgy.

Sunday School classes for 3 year olds through 9th grade

immediately following the 10:00 a.m. service.

A list of teachers, age groups, and classroom locations will

be provided on the Narthex table beginning on Sept. 11th.

Teachers will be using the HeartShaper (Shaping Hearts with God’s Word) curriculum for children Preschool through 5th grade. HeartShaper (Shaping Hearts with God’s Word program will engage students in Bible stories through multi-sensory learning, Bible skill-building activities, and focused life application.

The Middle School group, grades 6 through 9, will be using a scripture-based curriculum.

Thank you to our teachers/helpers for the 2016-2017 program year: Children’s Worship – Catherine Carroll; Early Elementary – Kris Thune and Teagan Thune; Elementary – El Nyberg, Susan McCoy and parent helpers; Middle School –

Peter Carroll and Mark Cornelissen.

We are looking forward to an exciting and joy-filled year as our children and youth grow in their Christian faith and in their love for Jesus Christ and one another. For further information regarding Sunday School, please contact Janet Stiff

or Rector, Fran Holliday.

Men’s Bible Study meets every Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Parish House. After taking time off during the summer, the group will reconvene on Saturday, September 10. Any male member of the parish,

high school age and older, is invited to participate. A light breakfast of coffee and donuts will be provided. Please direct any questions to Peter Carroll.

COME SING WITH THE SANCTUARY CHOIR

One of the opportunities our parish offers is ministry through music. The primary goal of the Sanctuary Choir is to provide musical leadership in worship services and to instill in the participants an appreciation and enjoyment of the

musical heritage of the Church.

As there are no paid singers, the Sanctuary Choir depends on persons who wish to dedicate and offer their time and talents to Almighty God through their service to the music ministry of St. Mary’s. There are no auditions and certainly

no solo voice is required. All that is asked is a commitment to be in attendance at as many rehearsals and worship services as possible, because each voice is important to the group.

For those who have ever considered joining the Choir, now is the time to step up – don’t be shy!! There is always a

need and a place in the choir for anyone who wishes to learn, to grow and to serve. If you have any questions, please call the Organist/Choir Director, Sandy Molyneux. Rehearsals are held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday, beginning September 7. The choir will lead the singing at the 10:00 a.m. services, beginning Sunday, September 11.

St. Mary’s Youth Ministry Looking Forward to Another Great Year

Last year St. Mary's started a new Youth Ministry. This ministry focused on using our talents to help address concerns that we as Christian leaders have for the world. Last year we chose the environment as our area of our concern. Together the team planned and held a Sunday service which highlighted our Christian call to be good stewards of all of God's creation. In the spring we performed a service project to show our Christian faith in action, sampling local water sources to determine their health.

This year we will be continuing this ministry and we would like you to join us.

Together... We will choose a topic that inspires us to action. What topics inspire you to action? Is it the

environment? Feeding the hungry? Social Justice? We will research the topic and work to fully understand the need.

We will share our concern with our St. Mary's family and the community at large. We will plan a liturgy that focuses on our topic. Working closely with Reverend Fran we will choose the readings and the music, decorate the church and act as lectors and ushers.

We will conduct a service project around our topic. Christianity is more than words, it is also in actions that we show our faith.

Our first informational meeting for youth in grades 6-12 and their parents will be Sunday, September 25th at 11:40 am (after the 10:00 service/Sunday School) in the Great Hall.

No Youth Ministry activity is limited to members of St. Mary's,

so if you would like please invite your friends to join us.

Labyrinth Update

Our cloth labyrinth has arrived!! It

fits beautifully in the Great Hall.

Watch for details about the inaugural

walks and a blessing of this

labyrinth. It is the hope of the

Labyrinth Committee that we will

soon offer a monthly guided walk.

The 24-foot diameter labyrinth is a

simplified Chartres pattern and was

handcrafted for us by Lisa Moriarty

of Paths of Peace in Stillwater, MN.

League of Women Voters Candidate Forums

The Episcopal Church has always advocated that being a responsible citizen, you should be an

informed voter and exercise your right to vote in every election. No matter how you feel about the upcoming election, there is a unique opportunity to meet the local candidates and hear their positions on issues.

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan issue oriented organization that does not endorse candidates. As part of our voter education mission, we sponsor forums prior to election so that candidates seeking to serve their

communities may present their views directly to the voter in an open, unbiased setting.

The forums will be held at McHenry County College, in the Conference Center. Meet and Greet the candidates will be 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. and the forums will begin at 7:00 p.m. and end by 9:00 p.m. All questions asked of the candidates

will be submitted from the audience that night.

Crystal Lake Food Pantry Notes

Volunteers Needed St. Mary’s is one of many churches in the surrounding area who supply volunteers to help out once a month at the Crystal Lake Food Pantry. The experience is very rewarding and fun, so if you have a couple of hours to help out we would really appreciate it!

Upcoming volunteer dates are Wednesday, September 7, and Wednesday, October 5. Contact Chris Bednaroski if you can help out. Thank you!!

Paper Please. . . Donations of food and/or cash are always welcome at the pantry. Another important need is paper goods. The pantry is not able to buy paper goods through the food bank, and clients are not able to use their SNAP benefits to purchase any paper goods such as toilet paper, Kleenex, paper towels, table napkins. Our clients tell us paper goods is an item they really appreciate. Please consider donations of paper goods. Bring them to the church any time, and your Board members will get them over to the pantry. Thank you!!

Stained Glass Window of the Month: HOLY PENANCE

St. Mary’s is blessed to have several, very beautiful stained glass windows in our church. They were created by Michaudel Studios, Chicago, in 1958. Each month, we will feature one of the windows, and we thank former parishioner, John Munson, who photographed them.

The Holy Penance window is one of the clerestory windows, depicting the seven sacraments, and it is located on the north side of the church.
