A Bridge to Higher EducationCommunity Environment: The school is located on a site as part of a larger college campus. Each building houses separate functions: administration and education. Both buildings were placed on the site to relate to each other and the adjoining college campus. Exterior materials used mimic the rest of the college.
A Place to GatherCommunity Environment: The administration building includes a commons area which is a large, open, multi-purpose room used for dining and social functions, including community gatherings and educational events or large group instruction. Exterior gathering areas are also provided between and around both buildings which are both linked by a bridge for the second floors.
The Science & Technology of LearningLearning Environment:The classrooms have a primary and secondary teaching wall and include projectors and screens. Two science labs, fully equipped with storage, sinks, fume hoods and prep rooms have been provided. Both buildings contain data connections and are designed with adaptability for future technological expansion. Building functions are organized and work spaces easily detectable.
Light for LearningLearning Environment:Typical classrooms are equipped similarly to allow flexibility for subject or grade level to be taught. All spaces are environmentally controlled, have dual lighting, and windows to allow natural light.
Materials to LastPhysical Environment - Building materials were selected to provide a low maintenance, long lasting facility that could stand the test of time. Brick, glass and metal were used for the exterior while metal stud construction, VCT and ceramic tile were used on the interior. The MEP system is centrally controlled by the owner for maximum efficiency and prolonged life. Multiple lighting levels are provided for savings on energy usage.
SustainabilityPhysical Environment –The site drainage was accomplished mostly with an underground system. Landscape areas are dispersed throughout the parking and hardscape areas to provide drainage. Water efficiency was accomplished using water efficient plumbing fixtures, including the landscape irrigation system. The HVAC system is served from the main campus central plant with the air handler units controlled through the building automation system. Lighting is multi-level to allow for energy savings. Strategic locations of window systems were installed for natural light in high traffic and instructional spaces.
Collaboration & PlanningThe planning process included a collaboration of JISD administrators, educators, facility planners and ACCD staff from conception of the program requirements, the design charrette and design development to the review of pricing exercises of the construction documents. The education program was conceived and executed in the development of the design program for an estimated student body of 500 and modified accordingly to suit user needs.
