One thing is for sure, there is no rest for the Jules B team.

As we were just recovering from the celebrations of our 25th anniversary, the launch of a new look for our ever-expanding online store and a full re-fit across all our boutiques - to reflect this amazing milestone and the beginning of a new and exciting chapter - we only go and get ourselves nominated for not one but three categories for the Drapers Awards! For those of you who may not have heard of the Drapers Awards, they are are the equivalent of the Oscars for the Fashion Retail industry. So, forgive us if we are a little excited about being selected as a finalist in the following categories: Menswear Retailer of the Year, La-dieswear Retailer of the Year and Small Etailer of the Year.

There is a huge sense of pride in the office at the moment, so obvious it is nearly tangible! This has certainly been a team effort where every individual staff member has had a part to play and is therefore rejoicing in this fantastic achievement. Mainly because, despite employing in excess of 100 people now, this is still a family business. Our ethos is shaped by Julian’s entrepreneurial spirit and desire to enthuse a passion for fashion in staff and cus-tomers alike, mixed with Rhona’s incredible attention to detail and innate ability to identify trends and brands with huge potential. As the driving force behind the business, Julian and Rhona welcome this official recognition with pride after two extremely momentous years in the life of Jules B.

NEWS

TREND ALERTS:• Bold Colours – The Summer trend of sporting bright colours in every shape and form has carried on to this Autumn/Winter 2011-12 season, adding depth and elegance to every look and bringing an injection of happiness into what is usually a dark and moody season. A pair of burgundy jeans by Armani Jeans, a purple or blue jumper by Hugo Boss, a bright pink Toywatch (see page 25) or a Rachael Ruddick red suede clutch bag (see page 6) are just a few items to choose from tojoin in the colour team! • Leather Buckles & Studs – The rock chick look is one of those trends that never really go out of fashion – always there to feed the little rebel within each and every one of us. Sometimes it seems to have a bigger voice than others and this season, you can sport this trend with a Benedetta Novi coat (see page 3), a Nanni belt (see page 24), a pair of Lorissa shoes by Sam Edelman (see page 7) or some Ash trainers (see page 13).

NEW ADDITIONS: Jules B is all about quintessential style. As such, it is our buying team’s prerogative to comb the fashion world in search of the next must-wear brand to fulfil the requirement of an ever increasing style conscious clientele. Here are some of the new additions to our portfolio of internationally renowned designers:

Established in 2008, it has positioned itself as a true luxury leather goods and accessories brand, exclusive to Jules B and Selfridges in the UK at the moment.

• All Wrapped Up – The biggest trend of the season for both men and women is to sport a fabulour item of outerwear. We have a huge selection of coats and jackets to suit every shape and occasion. Whether it be leather of wool, trimmed in fur or lined in printed silk, a classic Armani Collezioni overcoat for the business men out there or a Barbour Gold Label quilted jacket for the fashion savvy women, we will have the right coat statement for you.

The classic trench coat is perfect for slim straight up, straight down shapes. A belted waist is a great way to create curves, while structured tailoring keeps you looking smart and fashion forward. Developed as an alternative to a heavy ‘Serge Greatcoat’ worn by French and British soldiers in the First World War, the invention of the trench coat quite literally shaped decades of style and practicality for both men and women. Remaining one of the most popular and flattering styles to show year after year on catwalks the world over, this style is also great for hour glass figures and pear shapes, as a nipped in belted waist will show off your figure to maximum effect, whilst the taller lady will find long trench styles an easy option.

Practical for cold winter months and packed with handy design features to keep you on trend, quilted parka styles are great for you classic British pear shapes out there. Normally stuffed with down feather, the idea is to trap air between the feathers and keep you toasty - this classic insulation method obviously works as it has now been used for centuries. Parkas are perfect for casual weekend luxe - team with a pair of leggings and leather boots to work the trend fully.

Double breasted shapes are great for slim and small chested figures to add volume to the upper half. Adding focus with

buttons will draw the attention upwards and create curves. As a classic style, double breasted shapes look great over dresses and

heels for a contemporary take on men’s tailoring.

THE PERFECT COATPicking the perfect winter coat can be a strangely stressful situation with so much choice on the market; we’re talking pleats to parkas, military to masculine and tailored to tapered. But what really is the best investment is making sure you are not only fashion forward but also figure forward. Styling your outfit around your body shape is the best place to start and with a range of updated classics to last you season after season, Jules B has it all this Autumn/Winter...

The contemporary duffle coat. Single breasted shapes are perfect for curvaceous figures, whilst quirky finishings are a great way to

update a classic European style. Owing its popularity to the British Royal Navy who issued a camel-coloured style during World

War 1, the duffle coat takes its name from the town of Duffel in Belgium, where the thick woollen fabric is made and has remained a wardrobe staple all over the world. The nipped in waist will hug

your curves without enhancing.

Coats are actually a fairly new addition to a woman’s wardrobe, as up until the 19th Century women preferred to wear capes over bulky dresses. It wasn’t until sports

activities became more popular and day dresses more wearable that it actually became socially acceptable to wear a coat. However, one thing we did neglect in this fashion step forward is how great this oversized style can make your legs look! Ladies with

long pins hit the jackpot with oversized styles that accentuate leg length and play on proportions. Try wearing an oversized style over leggings or a tight dress for

Fantastic as a focal point for pear figures, fur collars and detailing will help to balance out your figure, by defining the shoulders and bringing the bottom half into proportion. Whatever shape you do go for, you’ll also find its insulation properties seriously appealing in the big chill and the luxury finish indulging like a flash of 1920’s Hollywood glamour.

As not only a traditional symbol of status, the fur coat was ‘historically born out of pure necessity and literally kept early humans from dying of cold’. The use of fur lined clothing has been especially prevalent among royalty, far before the glamour and glitz of a Hollywood 1920’s star. With such a wide range of faux or real furs now available, the key is to never pick a coat that’s too tight or fitted. That aside, the full fur effect will actually compliment most shapes and opting for a mid length with a slightly fitted waist will keep you snug and on trend.

Embellished styles are great for everyone! With winter party season just around the corner, what every style conscious lady should be looking for is

an on trend cover up to see you through the big chill but also compliment evening attire. Embellishment is a great way to glam up any outfit, while

adding leather gives an on trend rock chick edge. Play with textures and team with a feminine silk dress for maximum impact.

Full length coats are perfect for the taller lady as short styles can make legs look out of proportion.

Traditionally, a coat hemline was dictated by the length of underskirt or dress but modern fashion now gives us

the option of playing with layers and lengths. Wearing a structured coat that creates angles to break up the long

The belted coat really is the saviour of all winter warmers and whatever your body shape, a belt will either enhance or create curves. Perfect for all pears, petité, tall, hour glass and curvy ladies, even a simple tie will draw in the waist.

The military style bridge coat is perfect for athletic figures as clever tailoring will enhance curves. As another Royal Navy inspired shape, the classic bridge coat was worn by ship’s officers during cold weather and has developed into a year after year ‘sure fire’ fashion hit. Throw over a pair of skinny jeans for the weekend or mix textures and pair with a silk dress for the evening.

This season’s Oska welcomes an autumnal palette of pistachio, burnt orange and ruby to classic olive, black and zinc mixed with winter fabrics of boiled wool and soft cotton. With a variety to choose from, jackets range from boxy to tailored and from cropped to long while trousers play with a masculine influence. Ever present high quality basics take centre stage to balance out chunky knits, quirkily finished with contemporary buttons, brooches and leather fastenings. Texture is also big this season with knits ranging from white bouclé to mohair. Don’t be afraid to mix jersey with woven and colour with texture for a bang on Oska style. The Oska ethos remains individual: to produce sophisticated and personal fashion inspired garments from high quality materials. It is about making your own individual style with a mix of garments that work season after season, but don’t forget about accessorising either, it’s surprising what a bright colour pop scarf or jersey vest can do. Above all - it’s about having fun with your wardrobe. Enjoy…and spread the word!

Possibly the most important items in a modern man’s wardrobe this season is his outerwear. The choice should not be taken lightly and should be approached with some care and

consideration. The variety of men’s outerwear for this Autumn/Winter season is as vast as ever and knowing when to wear what and what to wear it with can muddle

the best fashion discerning gent’s mind.

ALL WRAPPED UP

OVERCOATA timeless classic that epitomises a definite sophistication. Contemporary overcoats are now

cut to knee length or even to the thigh and are more versatile than before through their slim-fit which accentuates the natural masculine shape. Whether it be single or double breasted, the overcoat looks best in a black, navy or a camel colour way and is almost always made from

wool or cashmere. The overcoat is the perfect choice to wear over your working suit but will equally add a smart style to jeans and a pair of leather brogues.

Nothing keeps you looking and feeling more toasty and warm than a touch of fur. After re-inventing itself last season with the backing of some major design houses, the trend continues

to be ever-present for this Autumn/Winter. Examples include the leather Armani Jeans and Trapper Aviator style jackets, whilst Hugo Boss and Cerruti have produced modern cut and

slimmer silhouetted parkas - finished with soft fur trimmed hoods.Versatility is vital, dressed up in a preppy style or casual for a rugged man about town look,

there will always be a fur item to suit.

The must-have trend for this Autumn/Winter 2011 has got to be classic leather, soft shearlings and tactile furs. We have handpicked an array of sumptuous trend led brands for you to feel warm this winter, which include Dom & Ruby, Benedetta Novi, Ash and Yves Salomon.

When thinking of leather, we are reminded of biker chicks and the T-birds from Grease. It has however recently taken a sleek and modern twist. bound to toughen up any outfit with fetish inspired leather jackets and gloves, for an edgy fashion forward look. This season’s must have item is the leather leggings, which can be dressed up with a silk blouse and heels or dressed down with added texture of a chunky knitted jumper or cardigan. If leather leggings are a bit too daring for you, Jules B has a wide range of leather inspired pieces so you can embrace the trend in your own way.

Shearling is no longer associated with Only Fools and Horses Del-boy and has fought its way back on the catwalks and into the forefront of Autumn/Winter fashion, providing a chic vintage looking alternative to the trusty winter coat. The catwalk also saw shearling being used to trim coats, accessories and shoes. Indulge yourself in sheer luxury by investing in a timeless versatile winter piece that will quickly become a winter staple for years to come.

Fur has become a winter essential after making a massive influx on the AW/11 catwalk, appearing in such shows as Vivienne Westwood and Marc Jacobs, thereby establishing itself as a must-have trend to pursue this season. Fur hasn’t just stopped at gilets and coats - we have seen an invasion of detailing, which establishes fur as a dominant trend for this winter. As well as the classic coat, fur is featured as trims on coats, gloves and boots.

If it is a fur accent you want, we have a wide range of accessories by Parisian brand Yves Salomon to compliment any winter outfit. For a timeless evening look, team your party dress with a fur wrap or a coloured fur scarf bringing a little 1920’s glamour to your outfit. To add extra warmth to an everyday look, add a pair of fur ear-muffs and snood to bring any winter coat into AW/11.

So whether it is fur, leather or shearlings embrace the trend this Autumn/Winter to be streets ahead in the style stakes.

It was in 1894 that John Barbour opened J Barbour & Sons in 5 Market Place, South Shields. But it wasn’t until 1908, when John Barbour’s son Malcolm produced the first mail order catalogue that the brand began to take off. By 1917 the catalogue accounted for almost 75% of Barbour’s business includ-ing international orders from as far away as Chile, South Africa and Hong Kong.

In 1934 Barbour began to create a motorcycling range which proved to be a huge success. The Barbour suits were worn by virtually every British motorcycling team from 1936-’77. The iconic International jacket has recently been re-released and the multi-pocketed wax jacket was soon to be followed by Bar-bour producing for numerous military outfits, including the design and issue of the Ursula suit which was given to members of the Submarine Service during the years of WWII - A reference to the brands highly practical designs that we mentioned earlier.

Barbour’s background suggests a very hard-wearing, practical brand that would not be seen as relatively ‘fashionable’. So how did they become to be the fore-runner for the heritage trend we see today? It was in 1980 when Barbour re-branded themselves with an advertising campaign which was to create quite a stir.

The campaign featured a young couple dressed head to toe in Barbour wellingtons, caps and jackets walking a small Jack Russel in the country – a perfect British idyll. Barbour had created a lifestyle, the young couple living in the country with a life of shooting, horses and land rovers. The city dwellers fancied a piece of this lifestyle that was otherwise closed to them and Barbour had given them a taste of it – so the town meets country style idea instantly took off. The most iconic pieces that became the must-haves were the short, lightweight Bedale jacket and the developed shooting jacket, the Beaufort. The brand’s fashionable competence was only enhanced when they were awarded two royal warrants by both the Queen and the Prince of Wales, in 1982 and 1987 respectively.

As people are more and more keen to invest in some proper British heritage, the brand’s popularity continues to rise and with modern collaborations and collections, Barbour have not reached their peak just yet.

This season sees the Barbour jacket reach new heights of popularity, featuring the staple quilted and wax collections, Barbour have also released collections Gold La-bel for women, which is an exclusive collaboration with Alice by Temperley and Barbour Steve McQueen for men, which celebrates the brands 75th Anniversary of their motorcycling range.

So we thought we’d give you a brief insight into one of the British brands leading the way – Barbour. Many of you will have heard the name Barbour, whether you have owned an item or not, this will no doubt be due to the massive popularity of the brand’s pieces recently. The jackets are not only fashionable, but highly practical too. Their staple jackets have been their bread and butter over the years, but the brand have delved into other product avenues and now have a firm relevance within the fashion industry, creating other items of timeless clothing that is definitely worthy of our notice.

Unless you’ve been asleep or living on Mars recently, you’ll be aware that the heritage trend is huge this season, unable to turn a corner without seeing a Fair-Isle knit or a quilted jacket...

Yes, you can now deck your kids out in the heritage look too! Available for ages 2-15, Barbour have now recreated their quintessential British items for children, with replica quilted and waxed jackets through to wellingtons, knitwear and shirts – coming very soon to Jules B...

Barbour’s main collections now purvey much more than their high quality, practical outer-wear. The brand now offer a wide range of luxury items from knitwear to bags that will appeal to any fashion conscious person. The knitwear is a key piece this season with cable knits being a focal point in the women’s Gold Label collection and the gents are offered some fantastic on-trend Fair-Isle pullovers and full zip sweatshirts within the Steve McQueen range.

Choosing a perfect Barbour jacket can be an overwhelming task due to the sheer choice on offer, so we’ve offered our own suggestions for the new season.

For Men – The Ashby wax jacket is taken from the Lifestyle Collection so is slightly tailored in fit, making it ideal for the modern man. With quirky design features such as the extra deep front pockets, the Ashby jacket offers something slightly different than the classic International jackets.

For Women – The Somerset jacket is taken from the Alice by Temperley Gold Label range and is short in length allowing a far greater versatility, whilst the contrast hem and shoulder detail will keep you looking unique and on-tend this winter.

For Men – Fair-Isle is still key when choosing your AW knitwear and the Auckland zip up cardigan is a prime example of the trend. The chunky knit is bound to keep you warm this season, whilst the versatility of the zip up fastening allows the piece to be dressed up or down.

For Women – Along with the Fair-Isle trend, cable knit is also a hit within knitwear styles this season. The Cambridge polo neck which is also part of the luxury Gold Label collection has cable knit in abun-dance. The polo neck is also a definite must-have this season, whilst the longer length makes the jumper great for a more dressed up occasion when teamed with a pair of skinny jeans or leggings.

1800’s: Gold Miners in America wanted clothes that were strong and did not tear easily. To meet this demand, Leob Strauss started a wholesale business, supplying clothes. Strauss later changed his name from the rather plain Leob to the extremely recognisable Levi.

1930’s: Westerns Cowboys who often wore jeans in the movies became very popular, which lead to an increased interest in the rugged trousers.

1950’s: Rebels. After James Dean popularized them in the movie Rebel Without a Cause, wearing jeans by young people became a symbol of youth rebellion.

1960-70’s: Hippies. Manufacturers started to make different styles of jeans to match the 60’s fashions: embroidered jeans, painted jeans, psychedelic jeans.

1980’s: Yuppies. In the 1980’s, jeans became high fashion clothing. Famous fashion designers like Armani & Versace started making jeans with their own labels on them and jeans sales started to rocket.

1990’s: Reinvention. Denim was still in vogue but it had to be in different finishes, new cuts, shapes, styles, or in the form of aged, authentic, vintage jeans, discovered in markets and second-hand stores, rather than conventional jeans stores. Levi Strauss & Co., the No.1 producer of jeans closed 11 factories in the 1990’s.

2000: NO LIMITS. Jeans made another come back on the catwalk with big name designers Gucci, Chanel, Dior and Dolce & Gabbana who added denim to their Summer ’99 collections. Tom Ford’s feathered, beaded, beat-up, torn-knee Gucci blue jeans, sold out globally at $3,715 a pop! The original concept of basic utility has now been totally freed of all social and creative restrictions and Denim has officially assumed any number of disguises and contexts to be worn in and apparently broken any price limit.

The heritage trend is huge this season and there is no shortage of country inspired outerwear to choose from. They range from the overcoats (see page 11) to the classic duffle and not to mention the quintessentially British quilted jacket. Gilets are big too this A/W and are available in on-trend colour-ways such as bright red and orange, evident on numerous catwalk shows. Renowned brand Barbour is the fore-runners, but let’s not forget about Gant, Hackett, Paul Smith and Oliver Sweeney, who are all jumping aboard the heritage band wagon with their own versions of traditional styles.

TWEEDS & CHECKSA staple piece in every man’s wardrobe, the blazer is relevant every season. An ideal choice for the dreaded smart/casual dress code, whilst being perfect to dress up or down at the weekend. A need to refresh a staple item is always an issue though, so one way to do this is to go for an unstructured blazer which will offer a casual impression whilst being comfortable, much like a cardigan.

But if you are a true traditionalist, then a slim-cut tailored jacket will never fail to impress. Look to patterns such as checks, tweed or herringbone for something bang-on-trend and for even more style points then think carefully about the collar, a shawl collar with pipe trim is a key piece this season and will add extra wow factor on your night out.
