Your generous support in 2018 has allowed us to make great strides in fighting the African book famine. We are pleased to share with you some of what we achieved in 2018: We shipped books by the millions (yet again): BFA continues as the world’s largest shipper of donated books to the African continent, shipping over 43 million books and serving every single African country in our 30-year history. This has garnered us a perfect 100 out of 100 score from Charity Navigator, and a seventh consecutive top 4-star rating, putting Books For Africa in the top 5% of all U.S. charities for fiscal responsibility and transparency. In 2018 alone we shipped 2.3 million books, and 123 computers and e-readers containing 283,000 digital books, carrying a total value of $22 million. 29 countries were served this year. Thanks to supporters like you, more than $2.4 million in cash donations were raised in 2018 to ship these materials. We shared the wealth: In pursuit of our goal to serve every county in Africa, we are proud to have shipped containers this year to Equatorial Guinea, the Central African Republic, and Sao Tome & Principe. None of these countries had previously received a BFA shipment, and we are thrilled to share the wealth as we continue our work to end the book famine across the African continent. The end result is that we have now shipped books to every country in Africa! We celebrated at our Atlanta warehouse, seeing off a container of books to the Central African Republic (funded by Better World Books) with diplomatic representation from the Embassy of Central African Republic on hand! We traveled in the right circles: We interacted with numerous members of the African diplomatic corps in 2018 to coordinate our activities and secure advice on how best to meet needs in Africa. His Excellency Carlos Dos Santos, Ambassador from Mozambique to the U.S., hosted BFA’s annual Summit Society reception at Mozambique’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., with numerous African Ambassadors in attendance. In Minnesota, His Excellency Edward Sawerengera, Malawi’s Ambassador to the U.S., delivered a keynote speech at our annual luncheon and helped us to honor the winners of the 2018 Minnesota Book Awards at a special book reading. Additionally, we honored Ngugi wa Thiong’o, Kenyan author and giant of African literature, at this year’s Twin Cities Book Festival and also at the Minnesota African Awards. Our 30th Anniversary Gala was a huge success, keynoted by African Union Ambassador to the U.S., Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao and raising funds to ship hundreds of thousands of additional books. Finally, we were honored to host former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan for a special reception sponsored by our Law and Democracy Initiative. This was one of the Secretary-General’s last public appearances before he passed away this year. Mr. Annan will be missed and well remembered by the BFA family. We connected with key partners: 2018 also saw Books For Africa participate in a large-scale USAID-funded project in Uganda, and finalize a new project in Mozambique which will result in our first ever custom-printed book initiative with the delivery of 300,000 children’s books to Mozambique. We also partnered with the Parliament of Egypt to deliver a law and human rights library to their offices. And most importantly, we established a new collaboration with the African Union which resulted in the shipment of a container of books to the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Books For Africa will participate in a special book distribution ceremony at the African Union in February of 2019 to celebrate this book shipment. We listened to our African partners: We also conducted on-site visits across Africa in 2018 to secure direct feedback in listening sessions with book recipients. We, along with board members, staff and volunteers, met this year with book recipients in South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and the Seychelles. We also signed a partnership agreement to develop a librarian training program in Ethiopia to help ensure library patrons are being well-served and a culture of reading is being fostered. Finally, Books For Africa participated in interactive sessions this year at the World Literacy Summit at Oxford University, England. All of these activities were designed to help ensure that the books we send to Africa are useful, high quality, and meeting their intended purposes. We gave the people what they wanted: For the third year, we surveyed our book recipients to assess impacts of our activities. As with previous surveys, we are pleased to know that recipients overwhelming rate BFA books as high quality, and agree that the books will be very useful in promoting literacy in local communities. 43 recipient organizations from 25 African countries completed our post shipment survey this year. Additional positive feedback was received from a book impact assessment of 514 schools in five countries conducted by partner organization BetterWorld Trust, and a focused five-year assessment conducted by the Nedjo Library Project in Oromia, Ethiopia, which showed dramatic increases in library use since the library’s restocking by BFA. In 2018 we engaged our partners on all levels in order to deliver millions of books. This year marks our 30th Anniversary of working towards our vision of getting children reading in every African country. This was the dream of Kofi Annan, who stated, “Literacy is quite simply the bridge from misery to hope.” We are honored to have the opportunity to help bridge this gap, and we appreciate your help in making this happen. Literacy: A Bridge to HopeB O O K S F O R A F R I C A 2 0 1 8 A N N U A L R E P O R T

Dear Friends,

2018 has been a historic year here at Books For Africa as we celebrated our 30th anniversary! Your generous support in 2018 has allowed us to make great strides in fighting the African book famine. We are pleased to share with you some of what we achieved in 2018:

• We shipped books by the millions (yet again): BFA continues as the world ’s largest shipper of donated books to the African continent, shipping over 43 million books and serving every single African country in our 30-year history.

• We shared the wealth: In pursuit of our goal to serve every county in Africa, we are proud to have shipped containers this year to Equatorial Guinea, the Central African Republic, and Sao Tome & Principe.

• We traveled in the right circles: We interacted with numerous members of the African diplomatic corps in 2018 to coordinate our activities and secure advice on how best to meet needs in Africa. His Excellency Carlos Dos Santos, Ambassador from Mozambique to the U.S., hosted BFA’s annual Summit Society reception at Mozambique’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., with numerous African Ambassadors in attendance. In Minnesota, His Excellency Edward Sawerengera, Malawi ’s Ambassador to the U.S., delivered a keynote speech at our annual luncheon and helped us to honor the winners of the 2018 Minnesota Book Awards at a special book reading. This was one of the Secretary-General ’s last public appearances before he passed away this year. Mr. Annan will be missed and well remembered by the BFA family.

• We connected with key partners: 2018 also saw Books For Africa participate in a large-scale USAID-funded project in Uganda, and finalize a new project in Mozambique which will result in our first ever custom-printed book initiative with the delivery of 300,000 children’s books to Mozambique.

• We listened to our African partners: We also conducted on-site visits across Africa in 2018 to secure direct feedback in listening sessions with book recipients.

• We gave the people what they wanted: For the third year, we surveyed our book recipients to assess impacts of our activities. As with previous surveys, we are pleased to know that recipients overwhelming rate BFA books as high quality, and agree that the books will be very useful in promoting literacy in local communities. 43 recipient organizations from 25 African countries completed our post shipment

survey this year.

With best wishes for a happy and productive 2019,
