Bible Story: The Writing on the WallDaniel 5Bottom Line: You can stand for whats right, even when its not popular.

Memory Verse: Finally, let the Lord make you strong. Depend on his mighty power. Ephesians 6:10, NIrV Life App: ConvictionStanding for what is right even when others dont.

Basic Truth: I can trust God no matter what.

This week were discovering

For week two of July well look at Daniel 5. After several years have passed, theres a new king in town: Belshazzar. He threw a huge party for his friends, but then a hand appeared and started writing on the wall. Daniel came and interpreted the writing. Even though what he said would definitely put a damper on the festivities, he told the king the truth.

Bottom Line: You can stand for whats right, even when its not popular. God can help you stand for whats right, even when what you need to say might not be the news people want to hear.

Our memory verse for the month is Ephesians 6:10, Finally, let the Lord make you strong. Depend on His mighty power. No matter the situation, Gods power can help you when you need to have conviction.. What You Need: An offering container

What You Do:

Talk to the kids about other languages: Do they know any? Do their parents speak any? Have they heard others speak another language? Tell them that there are about 6,500 languages spoken in the world. Theres no way anyone could know how to speak all of those languages, but its nice when we can understand at least one other language. Ask if anyone can say hello in another language.

Spanish: Hola

French: Bonjour

Mandarin Chinese: NiHao (knee-how)

Swahili: Jambo

Hawaiian: Aloha

Popular Flying (application activity / great for active learners)What You Need: Prepared piece of poster board or butcher paper, marker, sticky notes, scissors, blank paper, painters tape

What You Do:

Hand out the blank paper and instruct kids to make a paper airplane. (If you have enough paper, they can make more than one airplane if they choose to.) Hang the poster board or paper from the ceiling or in a doorway. Designate a spot on the floor for kids to stand (mark the spot with painters or masking tape) and let them fly their planes through the holes a few times. Tell kids that there are point values for each hole, but dont tell them what those values are. Let them fly the planes a few times and then remove the sticky notes, revealing the points. (Note: If you have mostly younger kids, you can have them wad pieces of paper into balls to throw into the holes, instead of paper airplanes.)Talk about how the easy, or popular, thing to do would be to just throw it through the big hole, but the smaller, less popular, hole has the bigger payoff.

What You Say:

In this game, it was much easier to fly your plane through the big hole and thats what most of you did when we played without points. However, you soon found out that the smaller, less popular, hole was worth more points. There was a bigger payoff to doing what was less popular. [Apply] Sometimes we want to just do what is easy because everyone else is doing it or because we dont want to go to the trouble to do what is right. But, what is easy is not always what is best. [Impress] You can stand for what is right, even if its not popular.

For example, if theres a new person at school who doesnt seem to have anyone to sit with at lunch or hang out with at recess, you could invite them to hang out with your group of friends. It might not be the popular thing to do; your friends already know each other and its hard to let someone new into the group sometimes. But the payoff is huge, especially for the new person who wants to make new friends!

If you lead mostly older kids, consider asking these discussion questions:

What are the advantages to standing for what is right even when it is not popular? What are the disadvantages? How can you determine if you should stand up and show conviction? What are some examples of situations where you might be called to stand for what is right? When you see something happening that is unfair or not right, is it important to stand up right away? Or is it sometimes important to wait and think about what to do or ask others for help? How do you tell the difference between these two times, and what do you do while you wait?

Writing on the Wall

What You Need: Paper; pencils

What You Do:

Give kids paper and pencil. Explain you will print a word on the wall with your finger using all capital letters. You will pause between each letter. You will write each letter once before going on to the next letter in the word. No repeats so they must pay attention. Start with easy words like: CAT, PIG, SKY, GOD, JESUS and move on to harder words: KING, LOVE, TRUTH, STAND UP, DANIEL.

What You Say:

You did a great job deciphering the words on the wall.Stand Up
