New Safety Regulations Call for Lock-Down Drills
This year new regulations were approved that call for schools to have fewer fire
drills but more lock-down drills. The new rules were the result of long discussions by the
New York State School Safety Improvement Team, which was comprised of offices from
the state education department, Governor’s office, state police, the state division of crimi-
nal justice services, and the New York state homeland security team.
The new statute calls for all public schools to have twelve drills in the school year.
Eight of the drills are to be evacuation (fire) drills, and four are to be lock-down drills.
Eight of the twelve drills have to be done before December 31st, and the remaining four
are to be done in the spring.
Andover Central School will have a “Safety Day” again this fall. Many of these
drills along with shelter in place drills will be conducted on this day. There will still be a
need for drills on other days because of time. Because the lock-down drills will become
more common, parents will no longer get a call through our School Messenger system be-
fore the drills begin. We will treat the drills just like fire drills. Sometimes a lock-down
drill might be conducted with the help of local law enforcement. So, please do not be
alarmed. In the case of a real emergency, parents will be notified as soon as possible by
the proper authorities.
We will talk to students about these drills at the beginning of the school year so that
they are not alarmed. We will instruct teachers about procedures once again at the start of
the school year, and they will reassure students that the drills have to be taken seriously,
but they should not be frightened.
Obviously, the goal is to keep our students as safe as possible, and have them ready,
should an event occur. With practice, students will be more comfortable with the proce-
dures and in turn, will be safer. As always, please feel free to call me with questions or
concerns at 607-478-8491, extension 240, or email me at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Mr. Jon E. Morris, Principal

MRS. CORNELL’S CURRICULUM CORNER…
Dear Andover Family,
I hope this letter finds you well and that you have begun to enjoy the summer with family and
friends. We have been very blessed with this wonderful warm weather! I would like to take a
moment to thank you for your support and collaboration in making the 2015-2016 school year
such a success. Our students have grown leaps and bounds academically!
This year, we reviewed multiple data points as part of our continuous improvement process with
our data inquiry teams (k-8). The teachers worked hard at manipulating their data walls and mak-
ing sure that each individual student was appropriately placed in an intervention group based on
their individual needs. Our Response to Intervention (RtI) process proved to be designed well
and supported our student achievement. My goal is always to ensure equity for all students so
they receive the individual support they need to reach and exceed our standards and expectations.
Below I have attached a brief data analysis of our iReady diagnostic results throughout our past
year. I am so proud of our students and teachers hard work ethic, perseverance and effort. They
did a great job this year and should be commended.
