Delivering the freshest news and updates for Mason County WSU Master Gardeners July 20, 2018 Accolades…but more to do by Jeannine Polaski, MG Program Coordinator, [email protected] What a wonderful garden tour and dinner! I had to slip out before the salmon (which looked divine) and all the good food the MGs brought (due to a family situation), but the clams, egg rolls, and snacks were dinner enough…yum! How do I get Xinh to come and cook at my house? All around, the Garden Tour committee outdid themselves this year! But as they say, there is no rest for the weary. We are now on to soliciting trainees for the upcoming Master Gardener training. If you are available to help deliver flyers or help me in the office it would be greatly appreciated. I will be in on Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 to 1:00. Or if you want to deliver flyers, let me know and I will make copies available and leave them for you at the office. Thanks! As a former boss used to always say, “many hands make light work!” Merci – Gracias – Danke Schoen! Thanks to Dot Browder for filling in the clinic spot last Monday! Your Mason County neighbors appreciate it. Répondez s’il vous plaît If you are planning on attending the Recognition Potluck on August 22, please send an email to [email protected] with your name and the number attending. We will get a potluck signup out at a later date. From the Prez As I plug away trying to capture the word that best describes the first six+ months of the year, my first thought is CONGRATULATIONS! This group has reached out to the Mason County population through the TTGG series, involved and assisted with the training and graduation of 11 new members into the Master Gardener community, and planned and successfully coordinated and held 2 recent events—the annual Plant Sale and very recently the Garden Tour. Catalyst garden is delivering produce to Saints’ Pantry on a weekly basis. We have members involved with projects at local schools. We have members working to clean up and improve the ‘Rain Garden.’ Is anyone ready for a well deserved rest? Absolutely! In the meantime, several other events are being planned as of this writing—a celebration and recognition picnic, the annual pumpkin sale, and our festive last Foundation meeting of the year in December (looking forward to all the crafts and goodies for sale). Am I missing anything? What an amazing group of people. A great Garden Tour for the record books! by Jeanne Kinney, [email protected]

Saturday dawned hot and sunny, but the docents and garden owners were ready for it. We sold 231 tickets, which may be an all-time record in the history of the garden tour—or at least a record for the past five years! Our gross income from ticket sales was $2,772. A huge thank you to all the docents and garden owners as well as the spouses and relatives who were pressed into service directing traffic, parking cars, and lugging supplies to and from various locations! All went smoothly and we got lots of positive comments from the tour participants, many of whom said they look forward to this event all year. If you have any suggestions for next year’s tour, please send them to me.

Special shout-outs to Kim Wheeler who is the creative mind behind our ticket booklets, Norma who so efficiently organized the docents, Kitty who seemed to be everywhere doing everything, and Connie, who had her garden on the tour as well as working on the dinner. Double kudos to Jan Mutter, “the hostess with the moistest,” who had her garden on tour as well as opening her home to all of us for dinner!

My heartfelt appreciation for everyone on the garden tour committee: Karen, Connie, Kitty, Kim, Pat, Norma, Brooke, Jan, Jinx, Dorothy, and Carol for your inspiration and hard work. You are the best!

Catalyst harvest day by Bonnie Day and the Catalyst Volunteers

What started out to be a nice cool morning quickly heated up as we worked to harvest and weed. Tuesday’s harvest total was 125 pounds with several boxes of large, beautiful onions going to the food bank Along with onions, we had our best picking to date of summer squash and zucchini, carrots, turnips, kohlrabi, and lots of greens. I was surprised how great the garden looked after so many very hot days. That’s a real credit to our drip line water system. Well worth the money. The bush beans are beginning to flower and the pole beans are quickly growing up our trellis. Dee Ann Kline planted one of the rows of pole beans so she has decided to take on the ongoing weeding as well. Thanks, Dee Ann Kline. The weeds in the garden certainly don’t mind the hot weather and we all spent at least an hour weeding around the vegetables trying to get it under control. A couple years ago we planted two espalier apple trees which are now flourishing (thanks to Sharon B) and this year are loaded with applies. Sharon put little nylon socks on each apple hoping to protect them and the socks are now full of lovely, big apples. We will be back next Tuesday at 9 a.m. Everyone is welcomed to come and help.

P.S. The lock on the tool shed at Catalyst was broken when we got up to the garden on Thursday. It doesn’t look like someone was trying to break in, rather it got jammed. We had to buy a new lock so the combination on the tool shed is the same as it is for the main gate. Any questions, email Bonnie

Left behind at the Garden Tour dinner:

Several chairs and a plastic tub (label says ‘yarn’) were left at the Garden Tour dinner. I have them at my house and can get them back to you once someone has claimed them—Kitty Lundeen-Ness, 360.490.5356, [email protected].

Nancy Dillon invites

you to celebrate her husband Ron’s life July 21, from 1 to 5 pm at her house (50 W Kidd Rd Shelton, first driveway past Kidd Rd). P.S. Manda will be there with her husband.

Master Gardeners Foundation of Mason County Friday Fresh July 20, 2018 3

Jan and Jim Mutter—for your graciousness and hospitality.

Xihn—for cooking the delicious salmon, clams, and egg rolls! (By the way, she had her operation Monday—please keep her in your prayers.)

Lori and Les—Jan Mutter’s daughter and son in law, for all your help with setup and cleanup.

Mary Jones—for offering and helping with anything and everything at the dinner.

Sharon Bryant—for your help in cleanup and washing a bunch of dishes and for taking photographs at the garden tour.

Carol Ann and John Acocks—for cleaning up the banquet room and loading cars and tables!

Connie’s sister in law, Tracy, and her friend Roxanne—for all your help with the cleanup after dinner.

Brooke Fuller—for bringing the lovely flower baskets for the tables.

Mary and Jim Dessel—for helping to set up the drink table at the dinner.

Learn from your mistakes by Lou Schmidt (Written while reading Mrs. Greenthumbs book. I seem to have picked up her writing style! Well worth reading!)

One. Don’t plant 10 tomato plants in a small raised bed garden!

Two. Don’t expect to have pole beans, cucumbers, and squash vines to be polite or stand in line and take turns about who gets to climb on the deer fencing. A few pole beans were actually trying to strangle the opposition!

Three. All the pruning from the 10 tomato plants will NOT fit in the compost enclosure.

Four. Hopefully they will fit after basking in the path for awhile.

Five. It is possible for one squash vine to already have 11 good sized squash, about 8 or more babies, and 100 hopeful flowers!

THANK YOU FROM THE GARDEN TOUR DINNER COMMITTEE!

The challenge!
