Hey Red
Bulls!
I hope that all of you
are having a fun and safe
summer so far in between
bonfires, summer assign-
ments, trips to the fair,
and Key Club. :) Thank
you all for continuing to
plan service events for your
members this summer –
it’s never too early to get
started on your hours for
next year!
Right now, your divi-
sion and region are hard at
work planning OTC, Re-
gional Training Confer-
ence, figuring out prices
for divisional shirts/
hoodies (which look in-
credibly sick), and visitingclubs.
On the international
level, ICON was recently
held in Memphis where
Stephanie Yuan from
CNH’s own D12E was
elected as an
International
Trustee and
Kiwanis Inter-
n a t i o n a l
adopted Mater-
nal and Neona-
tal Tetanus as
its new World-
wide Service
Project. In 37
South, Key Clubbers com-
pleted 1176.75
hours of service
to their homes,
schools, and communities.
I know that being an
officer requires a lot of
dedication and I know that
some of you have hit the
ground running, but please
always remember that your
division is here to support
you if you still have ques-tions about your position
and intense officer training
at OTC will also be com-
ing up in a few short
weeks. I have had the
honor of meeting many of
you already this summer,
but for those clubs that I
haven’t visited yet, let me
(and the division) know
what you’re doing with a
post on the reflector. Until
then, keep up the amazing work (:
Love,

iwanis International and UNI-
CEF have once again partneredto save the lives of babies and
their mothers by eliminating maternal
and neonatal tetanus (MNT). UNICEF
Ambassador and
actress Tea
Leoni deliv-
ered the
announce-
ment at
the 95th
Annual
Kiwanis
Interna-
tional Con-
vention,
Thursday, June
24th, 2010 in Las
Vegas, Nevada.
With The ELIMINATE pro-
ject, Kiwanis International and UNI-
CEF have joined forces to eliminate
MNT. This deadly disease steals the
lives of 60,000 innocent babies and
30,000 mothers each year. The effects
of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful con-
vulsions and extreme sensitivity to light
and touch.
To eliminate MNT from the
Earth by 2015, 129 million mothers
and their future babies must be immu-
nized. This requires vaccines, syringes,
safe storage, transportation, thousands
of skilled staff and more. It will take
$110 million — and the dedicated work
of UNICEF and every member of the
Kiwanis family.
In the 1990s, Kiwanis andUNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine
deficiency disorders (I.D.D.), achieving
one of the most significant global
health successes of the 20th century.
Now, they are eliminating MNT from
the face of the Earth. And in doing so,
the project will reach the poorest, most
neglected mothers and babies withadditional lifesaving health care. The
end of this one disease means the be-
ginning of better health for so many
families.
“Kiwanis believes that no
baby or mother should have to suffer
the devastating effects of MNT,” said
Kiwanis International President Paul
Palazzolo. “Kiwanis will mobilize its
nearly 600,000 family members to be-
come tireless advocates for these chil-
dren and raise needed funds to defeat
this deadly disease.”
MNT is easily prevented by a
series of three vaccinations to women
of childbearing age, costing roughly
$1.80. The Eliminate Project will raise
$110 million over the next five years to
fill the funding gap required to provide
an estimated 387 million doses of the
vaccine.
The Eliminate Project will
deliver life saving vaccines to the most
vulnerable women and children in the
world: those in remote and difficult toreach areas; conflict zones; and with
little access to healthcare.
“With Kiwanis by our side, we
will be able to conquer maternal/
neonatal tetanus,” said U.S. Fund for
UNICEF President and Chief Execu-
tive Officer Caryl Stern. “I’ve seen how
this disease devastates families. Infants
suffer, while mothers are unable to
comfort their babies. Kiwanis is provid-
ing the final push that will protect vul-
nerable women and their newborns.”
The majority of mothersand newborns dying of MNT live
in forty underdeveloped coun-
tries located in Africa, and
Southern and East Asia. The
disease kills one baby every nine
minutes. Its effects are excruciat-
ing—tiny newborns suffer repeated,
painful convulsions and extreme setivity to light and touch.
“As a mother of two child
I have known the great joy of welco
ing a new life into this world. I cou
n’t imagine watching my child suffe
and die from a disease that is as eas
preventable as MNT is,” said Leoni
“With this new partnership betwee
Kiwanis and UNICEF, so many live
will be saved.” Not only will The El
nate Project protect women and ba
from tetanus, the project also will c
ate a path for other services, such a
clean water, nutrition and other va
cines, to reach the world’s most vul
able people.
In partnering with UNICE
Kiwanis successfully completed its f
global campaign for children to virt
ally eliminate iodine deficiency diso
ders (IDD), the leading cause of pre
ventable mental impairment. Kiwan
raised and leveraged more than $10
million, which helped change lives
103 nations. The number of households estimated to be consuming io
dized salt has jumped from less tha
percent in 1990 to more than 70 pe
cent, and the effort has been herald
as one of the most successful health
initiatives in the world.

We met up at hilltop park. For some very
strange reason it was so windy that everyone
had to be careful with their agenda sheets. We
talked about future events for the summer
along with OTC and RTC. Laura was so kind
to bring us subway sandwiches. Someone
made cookies, I think it was Janis but whoever
made them should be a baker. Everyone was
able to catch up and talk about what they did
and what they were going to do this summer.
Even though it was a meeting it felt more like
everyone was just hanging out. These summer
meetings are very lax. I think more meetings
should be like this.

Lake Hodges Cleanup
at Lake Hodges: 6/05
On June 5, 2010, the groupof 4 wandered until they found
the tent labeled “We love a
CLEAN San Diego!” They
signed waivers and then given
trash bags and trash… picker-
uppers? Pickupstix? Whatever
they were, they soon proved
useful as the group began to
wander around Lake Hodges
and found all kinds of trashawaiting them. Towards Lake
Hodges… not so much. They
made a loop around the side of
the lake, picking up trash wher-
ever they could find it and
avoiding mustard, and finally,
after an hour, made it back to
the park, where they split ways
to find more trash, some peo-
ple heading back to Hodges again, and other
ing to the community p
try their luck there. Aft
hours was done and the
was returned to a large
more trash, they conte
left.

The Key Club banquet was a fantastic way
celebrate this year in Key Club!! Exci
to celebrate my first year of commun
service with this amazing club, I m
aged to convince many of my frien
to accompany me. It started off w
some rather delicious food and sous awards and speeches that even
ally gave way to more 'personaliz
awards and more touching speech
Then all the members of D37S key c
got to bid on selected members- hoping
win a special dance. My friends and I even ga
ered our tickets and bought out favorite v
president for his girl of choice. The night was topped off w
happy dancing and key club cheers that I'll remember until n
year's banquet!!

“If anyone has been going be-
yond the call of duty, it would be
Tyler Schultz. From the day he
grudgingly joined Key Club, he
has been outstandingly attentive
at meetings and a very valuable
asset to our club. No matter
which community service event
Tyler's at, I always seeing him do
his 110%. He's also been an en-
thusiastic recruiter, recruiting
about 7 people just this year! Fur-
thermore, Tyler was one of the
biggest contributors who led ourclub to win FIRST PLACE at the
Miracle Mile of Quarters last
May. Tyler has obviously done an
insurmountable amount of help
to improve our club, so he de-
serves the proper recognition.”

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/july-2010-bull-sheet 6/9
1. What projects can we
contribute to through
fundraisers besides Be the
Change and PTP?We currently do not have adivisional project that you can
fundraise for, however the Dis-trict Project for the next two
years is Project SHINE
(relating to service towards the
disabled) so funds raised can becontributed towards charities
that are in line with Project
SHINE.
2. Can we make this
snacks at DCM's a perma-
nent thing? :)Definitely. :)
3. Can a person who vol-
unteers no hours still say
they are a Key Club mem-
ber for college apps?
(Not that I approve...)Technically they should not be
able to put this on their apps –
to be a member of Key Clubinternational you should turn in
dues as well as complete 50
hours of service each year. Mysuggestion would be to keep
track of who in your club hascompleted both of these re-
quirements so you can back upthe people who are actually
members when they fill outapplications. Also, to encour-
age participation, recognize the people who have complete ser-
vice and turn in dues/
applications at your meetings!
4. How do you motivate
members who don't want
to be motivated?Lead by example! Go out of your way to convince them to
attend service projects, be
friendly, and encourage their friends to be involved as well
because Key Club is more fun
with friends :)
5. How do you motivate
OFFICERS who don't want
to be motivated?Remind them of why they ran
for the position they currently
hold, of the people who ran
against them but didn’t get the job, that there are other people
more than willing to do their
work if they choose to not bemotivated. Have an officer
bonding day, do service to-
gether – once he/she under-stands the importance of what
he/she does, the motivation willcome.
6. How do you increase
spirit if members haven't
been to DCON/divisional
events/haven't gotten the
initial Key Club bug yet?Be spirited yourself and en-
courage them to go to divi-sional/regional/district events,
or have your club plan funevents for its members to get
more excited about Key Club. I
know that a lot of people don’t
understand why some of uslove Key Club so much, but if
you persevere and continue to
actively encourage them to go
to events, eventually they’llgive in :)
7. If members attended
the Kiwanis meetings, isthere any spot that you
can put that on your MRF,
or is that unnecessary? There is a box at the top left
corner of each monthly tab
where it’ll say ‘KC at Kiwanis’
– mark yes.
8. Does the La Jolla Festi-
val of the Arts count as a
Kiwanis Project, since the
Torrey Pines Kiwanis was
involved?Yes.
9. How do you feel?I FEEL GOOD. UH I FEEL
SO GOOD. I FEEL FINE – ALL OF THE TIME.
ABOOGA, ABOOGA,ABOOGA BOOGA BOOGA.
10. What can I do as a
president to help out the
division as a whole?Give me input! If you haveideas you think we could apply
to the division let me know. Also, get to know other clubs
in the division – if you haveother clubs near you, do service
together because you’ll learnfrom each other.
11. Can we create events
and suggest them as Key
Club events?I think this question means if
you can create your own ser-vice events? The answer to that
is definitely! If you can’t findany projects around the com-
munity, be proactive and makeyour own (and invite the
division to take partwhile you’re at it).
12. Hi Vivian. I hope
this helps. Have fun
this year. Oh by the
way, how on earth
did you make
this survey!? It is
cool! I would
like to
know how to make one, it
could help me in my du-
ties as bulletin editor. Aha,
I see Google docs at the
bottom.. a clue....Go to Google docs (I love
Google)! I used this nifty tuto-rial.
13. Why are you so awe-
some?Because I’m from the best divi-sion in the world :)
14. How does the Key
Club school's point systemwork and how does our
school obtain points? Most of the points from thedivisional points system come
directly from the MRFs that
your secretaries submit each
month. Some parts, such as theLTG’s bonus are not, but this is
a reason to encourage your secretary to turn in the MRF
each month! You can get pointsfor almost anything Key Club
related – each service hour thata club earns each month, dues
payment, DCM attendance alltranslate into points. For the
full list of how you can earn points and the current standings
check out the reflector or theBull Sheet.

15. How do you feel
Vivian? Since I'm always
the little blonde child that
yells this. :)Hi Charlene! See #9
16. Can we make DCM’s
more social? Like let's ac-
tually have a little lunch
and ice breakers so that
clubs can comingle. :) It'll
help build red bull spirit.Yes! Great idea :)
17. How often should Key
Club have a fundraiser? You can have a fundraiser asoften as you like (for PTP,
DCON, other charities) butkeep in mind that the focus of
Key Club is service, notmoney.
18. I still don’t know how
to chair an event.
So...training please? How to chair an event will vary
from club to club but the basicsof the job are to keep track of
sign-ins for your club at theevent as well as writing an
event description of what oc-curred at the project, then sub-
mitting it to your secretary for the MRF. Contact your respec-
tive president to make surethough!
19. How can I show others
that I am ready for an offi-
cer role? I ran for election
office this year, but I lost
miserably. How can I win
next year? Now I am serv-
ing as an appointed offi-
cer.You already showed your club
that you are willing to serve it by simply running for the posi-
tion. Being an appointed officer
is not a bad thing! You shouldnever need a position for your ideas to be heard. I suggest that
over this next year, you reallystep up and lead by example –
go to as many events as youcan, meet the other members
and really connect with themon a personal basis, because
when elections roll around, what will really strike people is
what you’ve done to showthem why you should get the
position, not the contents of a 2-minute speech.
20. I hear that there areawards for distinguished
officers. How does that
work? How do you apply
or become eligible?Every year, the requirements
areslightly
different but gener-
ally simi-lar. The
first level
of recog-nition isOut-
standing,which
requiresyou sub-
mit achecklist
(availableon cnhkeyclub.org in Decem-
ber/January) which has require-ments that need to either be
initialed by me, your club president, advisor, or possibly
our regional advisor, then sub-mitted to the district office be-
fore DCON. The second levelis Distinguished, which in the
past required the submission of the Outstanding checklist as
well as a binder full of work that you have done on the be-
half of your club. However, this year we may be going
green and submissions may or may not be done electronically.
Keep copies of your work soyou can be prepared for either
submission type! Don’t pro-crastinate and start thinking
about what you can do to attainDistinguished status NOW. :)
Last year’s requirements aswell as a full list of possible
awards can be found here.
21. What is the best way
to get your members ex-
cited about Key Club? My
club seems to only see
Key Club as something to
put on your college appli-
cation. The best way, as always, is tolead by example. We all re-member a time when we had no
idea what Key Club was or why peo-
ple wereso excited
about it, but recall
that itwas
probablysomeone
else whocon-
vinced usto join, or
talked usinto go-
ing toFall
Rally/DCON, or the memory of a really fun Key Club event
that made us fall in love and
continue to go to events, so bethat motivator for other popleand get to know as many of
your members as possible. If there is a shy underclassman
who is working alone at anevent or sitting by himself/
herself at a meeting, offer your help and introduce yourself!
22. For treasurer would we
be remind of dates to turn
things in?Yes. Right before school be-
gins, I will be emailing individ-ual positions separately andremind them of their duties
over the school year. Regardingtreasurer duties, remember that
Key Club membership from the previous year expires on Sep-
tember 30th so DO NOTTURN IN DUES UNTIL AF-
TER SEPTEMBER 30th. Thefirst day to turn in dues is Octo-
ber 1st. This will be explainedmore in depth at OTC but if
you have any other questions before then, contact me!
23. As event coordinator Iwould always love to hear
any suggestions you may
have for our schools club,
or let us know of any ser-
vice projects we (SPHS)
can get involved in with
some other schools as
well. :)If you guys are organizing aservice project and need help, if
you guys are holding a fund-raiser, or if you guys need help
with anything, remember thatyou can let the rest of the divi-
sion know through the reflec-tor!
24. Do we all need to at-
tend the big meetings? To attain District Outstanding
or Distinguished officer status, you must attend a certain num-
ber of DCMs (undeterminedright now) but please try to
come to as many as you can!
25. For the Distinguished
Award for treasurer, how
should I keep track of the
things that I have done?
How should I document
it? Do I need proof of
completion from some-
one like a president/VP/
advisor/LTG? If so, who
and how should I get this
proof of completion?
MOST IMPORTANTLY: Can I
aim for both the Out-
standing and Distin-guished Award (just in
case my portfolio and re-
cords aren't good enough
for the higher level), or do
I have to specify which
award I aim for?
8/9/2019 July 2010 Bull Sheet
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/july-2010-bull-sheet 8/9
For everything you do as treas-urer, keep a record. When
members turn in dues, keeptrack of who turned in dues and
when (use a notebook or anExcel sheet). Create a club
budget and keep track of everydollar spent or made by your
club! Basically keep everythingthat you do! When you apply
for Distinguished, you are auto-matically put in the running for
Outstanding, so yes, you canapply for both. See question
#20 for more info.
26. As a treasurer, what
should I regularly contact
(or act as a liaison) you
(the LTG) for mainte-
nance of my Key Club?
(i.e. should I ask you
about dues? fundraisingtips? service events? or is
this all the job of the presi-
dent/VP?)Each club is different, but defi-
nitely keep in communicationwith me if you have ideas for
fundraisers or have questionsabout your treasurer duties.
However, some things may bespecific to only your club so
also consult your president andthe rest of your officer board! If
you ever need ideas or support, don’t hesitate to contact me. :)
27. Could you give me
any additional specifics
on being a treasurer in
addition to the following:
-Financial record keeping
-Attending service events
and DCMs (for Distin-
guished Awards)
-Collecting dues/funds
-Planning/deciding about
Key Club dues (or is this
the president/VP job?)-Fundraising (How much is
usually necessary for me
to contribute to this
area?)For financial record keeping, itis best if you keep a record
(Excel works very well for this)of everything your club spends
or saves. Your attendance of service events and DCMs
should be kept track of by your secretary and when the time
comes to apply for theseawards, your secretary can ini-
tial your service record and Ican initial your DCM atten-
dance. The method of collect-ing dues/funds at each club is
different, but you should bekeeping an official record of
who has turned in dues andwhen and handing out receipts
to those who have turned indues is a good idea as well. Be
as organized as possible! Col-
lecting dues is a collective ef-fort of the entire board but ulti-mately it is the treasurer’s re-
sponsibility to ensure that duesare turned in to international on
time. Methods will vary fromclub to club so meet with your
officer board to determine howthe collection of dues will oc-
cur (for example, applicationsand dues go to the treasurer
first, the treasurer then keepstrack of the money and records
who turned dues in, then givesthe applications to the secretary
for their files). Fundraisingshould again, be a collective
effort of the board, but it is amain responsibility of treasur-
ers (and sometimes vice presi-dents) to organized fundraisers
for the club. More informationabout your duties can be found
here.
28. What can I do to im-
prove my club and be a
distinguished club?A really great resource is the
‘Symptoms of a Weak Club”worksheet. Fill this out and see
what your club needs to im- prove on! See question #20 for
the requirements for Distin-guished status. However, re-
member that a crucial ingredi-ent to a club’s success is how
willing and dedicated its mem- bers and officer board are, so
get to know your members aswell as the rest of your board to
better understand how you canall work together to become
Distinguished. :)
29. How do I get my offi-
cers to be more involved?See question #5. Remind them
that they ran for the positionand their obligation to fulfill
the promises they made in their campaigns for office, but be
encouraging (but also firm), notharsh.
30. What is some adviceyou have for newly
elected presidents for Key
Club?Congratulations! Remember that you have people in your
club and in your division tosupport you. If you are feeling
overwhelmed, don’t be afraidto delegate work. Keep in mind
that you represent your cluband that you work for them, not
the other way around. There are
9 more months until the end of your term, so sit down rightnow and make a list of goals
you would like your club toachieve. Most importantly,
communicate with your offi-
cers as well as your members
because information is vital for your club’s success. J
31. Do you have any
ideas to make our club
more engaging for mem-
bers? We recognized that
there isn’t enough timeduring lunch to actually
do icebreakers >< and we
are still trying to solve the
whole "I paid dues... so
8/9/2019 July 2010 Bull Sheet
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/july-2010-bull-sheet 9/9
I’m a member" deal...
Since kids are NOT com-
pleting hours ON TIME or
AT ALL :( Thanks Vivian!! :)Emphasize from the beginningof the school year (and con-tinue throughout) that you must pay dues as well as complete
50 hours by the end of the year in order to be an official mem- ber of Key Club International. Iwould say recognize those whohave paid their dues and com- pleted their hours (maybe havea benchmark each month thatyour members should be oneach month and if they meetthat, treat them to a small prizeor something). Make member-ship a bigger deal than turningin an application and $11 – maybe formally induct the
members who have paid duesat a meeting each month! :) Seequestion #3. Also, to makeyour meetings more engagingfor members, make sure thatthey are paying attention (Iknow that members who talk through a meeting are a com-mon issue at most clubs) byhaving officers shush them.Don’t have it just be one persontalking at meetings all the time
– switch it up! Be excited aboutwhat you’re saying :)
32. As a vice president,
how can I get more peo-
ple to join key club and
keep them as active
members?Go out of your way to get toknow your members! If theydon’t know anyone in the club,
the likelihood that they willstay in Key Club is very low,so go up and introduce your-self. Personally invite them toevents.
